Wow you do get bugged about even the suggestion of a partial blind test. But it sounds like it was used in your case when it wasn't proper. It's really standard methodology to eliminate possible culprits. I didn't feel anyone was saying he was crazy, just suggesting logical steps to find what might causing the improvement in sound quality. It wasn't a rigorous test or anything just a friend turning off the possible offending computer and seeing if it's noticeable in real time. Just as you say it's a standard replay so is the freak out about even suggesting such a thing. Maybe both are overused and blind test may be thrown out too much and maybe people over react to the mention of it too much. -- Nonreality -IF THE RULE YOU FOLLOWED BROUGHT YOU TO THIS, OF WHAT USE IS THE RULE.- HTTP://www.last.fm/user/nonreality Nonreality's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49190 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] About to sell my CD player--will SB3 be enough??
My CD player was on its last legs a couple of years back. Not buying a new one helped in my mental justification for buying a Transporter. In case of Transporter failure (I had a power supply chip go down) or when my wife wants to play a CD, we just stick it in the DVD player. Like some others here, and unlike some others here, I don't miss the CD boxes at all. While getting Squeezecentre to run on my Qnap I came across various threads, some relevant to problems I was having, though I didn't have any that weren't due to my own stupidity..but some members complianed that their Qnaps were slow..I'm sure the answers in a few cases were that the decoding/encoding was being done by their particular Qnap and not the PC as was the case when slim/squeeze was ran PC..Another observation,,,When I first networked my house the cable at the pc/router etc end was left in a big untidy heap like an overgrown bush with the router and other devices nesting in it, in my eagerness to get it all up and running..there's a mains adapter for every switch etc..I suffered a lot of router problems and was consantly resetting it..complaints from my wife about the mess forced me to do the job properly..installed trunking and remove excess cable etc..not one router reset since so...could mains transformers/adapters induces noise where you don't want it? Question..any thoughts or experience of the Sonic Impact amplifier. Thanks for the respones and listening to my rambling. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] About to sell my CD player--will SB3 be enough??
Mr Bill--to answer your question, the SB3 and Electrocompaniet DAC are not _better_than my Ayre, but in my room, with my associated equipment, through my ears, and given MY listening/sound preferences, I could not tell the difference. I also owned a Linn Unidisk and also sold that as overkill since on CDs the SB3/Electro combo sounded the same to me. I'm sure if I were an audio reviewer I would have "heard" lots of differences, but since I'm just a regular 55-yr-old female layperson, I have to say the SB3/Electro combo matched any CD player I've had in my system (Marantz SA-1, Linn Unidisk 2.1, Ayre CX-7e, Arcam FMJ CD-33). As I said, I hope I don't regret my decision to part with the Ayre down the road. But I suppose I can always find another one via Audiogon, where the price has dropped quite a bit on these players from about 2-3 months ago (then they were selling for $1900-2000; now it's $1750 tops). If you are curious about a top notch CD player, try the Ayre. Incredible player and a "bargain" at $1700. If you are a gifted audiophile, I'm sure you will "hear" differences from SB/DAC or Transporter! I am ordinary, not gifted at all. -- sc53 sc53's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8690 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49169 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I never had anything in the class of the Ayre CD, I did have a high end Pioneer player, and many others. As soon as I got my first SqueezeBox, I was converted. There is nothing about physical CDs that appeal to me. For the four or five years since I started drinking Sean's Koolaide, I touch a CD only to rip it to flac, or to load into my car's jukebox for road trips. I've never used the normal remotes, for years I used fishbone on a laptop as the sole control. I got my SB and once I had all my cds online found I never used my cdp any more. I sold it and bought a DAC and have never looked back. (Had to buy the DAC as the SB on its own just didn't sounds as good as my cdp). One extra benefit of the DAC was that I can use it with TV and DVD's (DVD player becomes my backup cdp). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sometimes I really don't get it!
I haven't had time to investigate further unfortunately. However, the most likely explanation is that noise from the PSU is making its way through the ring main to the hifi. In my case my system is pretty resilient to mains gunk, but it could be that the TP is susceptible. The other possible explanation is that noise is getting through the CAT5 cable, which seems unlikely, but easy to test, in my case, by simply unplugging the desktop from the router. The software will not make a difference, nor will the cat5 cable itself - so don't let anyone sell you an audiophile one. What does make a difference, strangely, is where you decode your flacs (either natively or on the server). A number of people have commented on this, mostly when using the analogue outputs of a slim device. Not everyone agrees on the which is the better setting though! Firmware version can make a difference, but Sean has commented that they haven't made an update recently that would affect sound quality (i.e. they have been functional and bug fix updates). Hopefully I will get the opportunity to make the tests I want to do to try and tie down the culprit over the weekend. Then I'll post an update and get shot down by all and sundry. -- bigfool1956 David Ayers Music is what counts, hifi just helps us enjoy it more bigfool1956's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13782 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49190 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Hi, This is my first posting under audophiles, but I've been browsing for tips..But reading this thread intrueged me,,this why and bare with me..I've an old hifi whose MD and CD packed up thru exccess use and fluff from CDs left all over the floor..So 2 yrs ago I bought a squeezebox hardwired it to my network and fed it from my computer and nas SC101.Squeezebox was, and still is connected to hifi with digital aux in (optical) and both are in a different room to the computer and nas nut still on the same ringmain. Just recently my music nas (sc101) collapsed! So I've replaced that with Qnap 409 which is now acting as a server...My computer and Nas being in different rooms were permanetly running...untill now! As my new nas acts as a server for Squeezecenter,so as part of my commisiong I turned of my computer for the first time it or I can remember and walked back to see if squeezebox was playng..I could hear it was as I approached, but on entering the room I noticed a big difference in what I heard! I'm not what i beleive is an audiophile but just a music lover who was looking for some tips to improve or jut bring upto date an old and mostly disfunctional hifi system..Now I'm not sure i need to..I turned on my computer and nothing has changed. ie what i'm hearing is noticeably different to everything I've been hearing for years..we have no television and spend our time between music and radioI can see why this could still be considered psychosamtic..only difference is computer was driving the sofware squeezebox needed to run in conguction with the old nas..can sofware make enough noise over an CAT5e network? -- Zuso Zuso's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14192 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49190 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Fair enough, if there would be no significant reduction in cost, then there is little point. I was looking at partnering with the new John Westlake DaCapo DAC, which is actually looking to be about half the price of the Transporter and would replace my pre-amp as well, and it just seems a shame to have all of the conversion and analogue electronics put into the Transporter and never use them. Ciaran, the only way to get something is to ask for it, and I'm sure if enough people ask then it will happen (in some form). The slim/logitech guys have an excellent track record of listening to these forums and using it to improve their products. The Transporter is a great piece of kit and I wouldn't go back to a conventional CD transport. The whole external clocking, effects loop & external inputs functionality of the Transporter is still developing and improving - So there will still be a few niggles. My pet irritation is the inability to switch between slave and master clocking of the Transporter from its front-panel - You have to use a web-browser to do it, you can't even do it on the new SBC remote. Fortinately I don't do it often (only to listen to the 88/23 flacs !). -- AndreSz AndreSz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15515 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49133 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?
Not the first time this has been asked. I think the problem is that it wouldn't remove much from the BOM, so you'd probably be looking somewhere north of $1,500. Considering the inherent advantage (jitter-wise) of a one-box solution, the 'full' TP is likely to sound better than one with an external DAC unless the DAC is *very* good - so you would be looking at a target audience of people who have spent more than the price of the TP on their DAC - and they can easily afford the extra $500. -- adamslim Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others SB+, EAR V20, Living Voice OBX-R2s plus some other stuff SB3, Charlize, Harbeth HL-P3ES adamslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7355 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49256 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] dCS Elgar and Verona with SD Transporter
Thanks AndreSz for those helpful posts. From what I found on the "Setting Transporter to Slave for World (sic) Clock Input " thread, I had gathered that the half-speed effect might be a problem. I am disappointed that the Delius will only output 44.1 or 48 clocks as well: I had assumed that I would at least be able to clock from the Elgar: I must consult the manual (if only other manufacturers would produce manuals as thorough as dCS!), but without much hope, based on your experience! I wonder if Slim Devices would be prepared to make a firmware change for the dCS users allowing use of a half-rate clock: there seem to be a number of us on the forum. Sean seems to disapprove of external clocks (and from a theoretical point of view I can see why), but from his posts on the other thread, he would approve of clocking from the DAC. Stioll, I'm sure we're only a tiny part of the community. On the other hand, a lot of people on the audiophile forum seem interested in using external DACs, so clocking may be an issue for them too. -- Ciaran Ciaran's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18300 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49133 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If you try to play a 88/24 flac on the Transporter with a 44.1 Master clock, as I have done, the file will play - but at half speed !. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] dCS Elgar and Verona with SD Transporter
I have a DCS delius/purcell & Transporter. My standard configuration is to source the Master clock from the Delius to the Transporter. This works well and the improvement is clearly auduble. I have purchased some 88/24 & 96/24 flacs from Meridian, and have managed to play them on my Transporter, but only with the Transporter as clock Master. The transporter requires a Master clock at the same sample rate as the file (88 or 96Khz), and the Delius only provides 44 or 48 - So I can't use the Delius Master clock. By the sound of it you would have the same problem with the Verona. The high-rate files sound good from the Transporter, however I wonder how much better they would be if I could Master clock them from the Delius ! -- AndreSz AndreSz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15515 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49133 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?
Hi there guys, don't know if this is the right place to post such a question, but I was just wondering about the possibility of a digital transport in the true sense? I shall explain: I currently use an SB3 as a digital source for my stereo system (as my CD player gets used less and less these days!) and have been for a while now, but I really like some of the extra features available on the Transporter (ability to play 96kHz FLACs, better connectivity, facia controls, and the use of twin screens). The thing is, and Im sure I am not the only one here, but I have a DAC that I use with the SB3 that I would like to continue using, and so wouldnt use the onboard DAC or any of the analogue side of the Transporter. Because of this, I was wondering if Slim Devices would ever consider offering a cut-down Transporter that was identical in every other way, but did not have any of the digital inputs, analogue outputs, or DAC circuitry; but just had a selection of digital outputs? I dont know how much this would remove from the BOM, but most if not all of the components should be carry-over, it should be substantially cheaper, and would mean that for those of us that already have DACs that for whatever reasons we like the sound of, we would not be paying again for hardware that we would not get any use out of.
