At the moment i am running a squeezebox -> moodlab DAC -> burson buffer -> kingrex t20 + PSU (just upgraded from the Super T) and then out through some old speakers (pioneer woofers and new vifa tweeters) i found on the street which will be the next upgrade in about a year or so. my wife and i don't share all the same musical tastes so i tend to find myself listening to less and less punk and hardcore these days. either i'm growing up into a man or i'm not as angry anymore. -D -- drewe181 http://www.last.fm/user/drewe181/ drewe181's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8129 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30141 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I use an M-Audio FastTrack Pro for a couple reasons. It's moderately priced, and works well with Linux (standard usb-audio drivers). I guess the point I was trying to make was that the claim that studio monitors are more "accurate" to me is now total bee-ess. If they're ACCURATE, they should all sound alike. I mean the waveform passing through the voice coils is a measurable, definable thing. But they don't, and that's fine. I guess I didn't really expect them to. Speakers do color and that's why people seem to like certain types, brands or styles of speakers. But just because I don't like the color or emotion of a certain speaker doesn't mean it's flawed. It mainly means it doesn't work with my likes to my ears or my type of music. For years JBL's were always the Rock speakers and loved for that but not for Jazz or classical. As I've gotten older I do like certain speakers probably because I'm comfortable and familiar with the color and sound of them. While I love my B&W's I'm sure there are others that think they are junk. So many intangibles make music reproduction almost impossible to judge on what is best I think. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Another Open Question To Audiophiles With Studio Experience
The facility I work at, where I am Chf Audio Engineer, has all Genelec monitors. A lot of people like them, and just as many don't, which proves your point Cliveb. You have to find something you're VERY comfortable with, and spend a LOT of time tuning your ear/brain combination. This can virtually be done with ANY style of "professional" studio monitor... look at how well the Yamaha NS10s or Auratone 5Cs have done!! We chose Genelec S30Ds in three of our main rooms. They have a ribbon tweeter, are tri-amped and are very easy to listen to for LONG periods of time without too much ear fatigue. Studios and Edit bays all have 1030As. Our mixes from the S30Ds translate very well to these 6.5" bi-amped monitors. Our main video post suite has 1037Bs. Tri-amped and VERY LOUD, but still not a lot of fatigue after long listening periods. We're currently building an HDTV Remote Truck, as well as converting our 4-video edit suites to HD w/ 5.1 monitoring. They will all have Genelec systems, as well as Genelecs in the truck, because that's what our brain is used to. I know for a fact that a mix I do in the truck will feel exactly right in any one of the video suites because all Genelecs 'feel' the same to me. I do a lot of location recording on my own, and also have Genelecs for that (1030As and 8020s). Again, it's what I'm used to when I'm working. However, the 5.1 listening/entertainment room in our home has Tannoy surrounds and sub. This gives me an 'alternate' listening experience when I bring work home to 'verify'. All-in-all, do NOT buy speakers JUST BECAUSE A SALESMAN TOLD YOU THEY'RE GREAT!! Make up your own mind based on what feels right to you. BTW, a GREAT test for listening to speakers when shopping is to play a dry (no effects), speaking human voice. Your brain KNOWS what the human voice is supposed to sound like and, when you turn the volume DOWN, i.e. 75-80dB SPL, you will hear flaws in the mids and top end if there. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Another Open Question To Audiophiles With Studio Experience
Well, my last question generated a healthy dose of banter, so I thought I'd ask another. (Although this is more of a pontification.) Recently I bought a copy of Propellerhead Reason to see if there's any chance I can put together some not-completely-sucky music. I've also wanted to rig up a modest "studio" in our guestroom to produce said music. So I wandered into Guitar Center to listen to and compare some small, relatively inexpensive monitors, namely: KRK Rocket 5 Gen 2 M-Audio BX5a Deluxe Mackie MR5 Yamaha HS50M Now, these are all supposed to be flat, sterile studio monitors. Theoretically, shouldn't they all sound the same, or at least VERY similar? But you know what? They all sounded VASTLY different. As different as any bunch of similarly-sized hi-fi speakers you might stick together. So here's my opinion at this point. There ain't no "flat" speakers. There ain't no "accurate" speakers. You pick the ones that abuse your particular ears the least and you buy them. -- jonheal Jon Heal says: Have a nice day! http://www.theheals.org/ ~~~ SB3 (wired - 6.3.1) | Home-brew PC running XP Pro | DENON DRA-395 | PSB Stratus Bronze (2) | Outlaw Audio LFM-2 (1) | DIY Speaker Cables | Dayton Audio Interconnects jonheal's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2133 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50711 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

On undamaged CDs, using very cheap computer CD drives, I almost always get 100% bit perfect rips. I can verify this by comparing the files to an online database, or I could make two copies and use a bit-compare utility. Once the bit-perfect file is on the computer's hard drive there cannot be any memory of the CD drive that ripped it - the only thing that matters is the sequence of bits. So if you really heard differences, you either made bad rips with EAC (which means you didn't use accurip to verify them) or you are fooling yourself. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50690 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

What makes the $3K transpoter worth other than the minimized loss > (if so) in its circutry? > 1. No. If a CD drive gives you a bit-perfect rip, it cannot get any better than that. You do need to use ripping software that can do bit-perfect rips if you want to ensure this (e.g., EAC, Dbpoweramp). 2. If you store lossless files, then there is no loss in storing. If you stream using a network protocol like TCP/IP, as you do with SqueezeCenter, then there is no loss in streaming to the transport. In general, any digital cable that is not broken will get all the bits from the transport to the DAC. However, spdif has an inherent weakness in that the clock signal is embedded in the data, and this can result in timing variations (jitter), depending upon the specific equipment involved. This may or may not be audible, depending upon your equipment, your listening environment, and your ears. There are numerous threads here devoted to explanations of jitter. 3. A very expensive transport may have better components, better power supplies, better engineering, or it may just have a higher price. It may go to greater lengths to minimize jitter, by using a master/slave clock, by avoiding spdif altogether, etc. Whether it is worth the $3k or $30k is very subjective. I can think of better ways to spend my money. :) If it is a CD player, and has to read the physical disc every time, there is always a potential for read errors and data interpolation/extrapolation, which does constitute data loss. In this respect, an accurate rip stored in a lossless format is a better read. -- jeffmeh jeffmeh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3986 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50690 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The $20 CD drive has the luxury of being able to use AccurateRip, so that it can compare what it ripped to what others round the world ripped for that same CD. That way with the CD drive, as long as the CD is in the AccurateRip database, you can be sure that it has ripped the CD 100% accurately. The CD players don't have that luxury, you can never know how close to 100% accuracy they are getting (or at least not without using hardware/software to sample the digital output of a range of players). With a Transponder you will hear the differences most certainly. -- michel michel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4393 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50690 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Does a better CD drive make better sound?
I've read some online articles about this question and also a few threads in this forum. But, I couldn't get the point. :( I would appreciate it if anybody could give me an answer easy to understand. Let's assume some possible options. - 1. (a) a decent CD drive of PC - ripping ---> (b) digital data in HDD ---> SB3 or TP digital output (Let's think of only digital output here.) ---> DAC 2. (a), (b) same ---> MAC mini digital output ---> DAC 3. $100 CD player digital output ---> DAC 4. $3,000 CD transpoter ---> DAC - Here are my questions. 1. Is the $3K or $30K CD transporter better than $20 CD drive in pulling out the digital data from a CD? Is there any $1K CD drive for Hi-Fi ripping? (I mean $1K for the CD drive itself not for the automated machine.) 2. Is the loss of data in streaming or storing really significant? Yeah... I see some digital cables priced at over $1000. If so, the shorter paths like the option 2 and 3 are supposed to be better than the option 1. Is it true? 3. What makes the $3K transpoter worth other than the minimized loss (if so) in its circutry? I know my question might sound a little silly and the answer to my question could be "If you have $10million, just buy the $30K transporter and $2K IC cable to get 1/10 inch closer to the perfect world." But... I'm curious. :) -- smarco smarco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12178 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50690 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Should I use duet or marantz DAC?
Thank you for all the kind answers. As soon as Duet will arrive I'll try both configurations. -- capitano capitano's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=19086 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50653 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

It's a suspension bridge with large support beams, cantilevered trusses and extra large arches thus allowing the bridge to be lifted like a draw bridge or rotated completely out of the way. I know that such a bridge should not be possible but AutoCad, Photoshop and other computer aided design tools were employed during it's construction within the digital domain thus enabling the proper blending of all the contrasting elements, kind of like how the XO E System allows an mp3 file to sound better than a CD. It's all rather technical and well beyond the ability of many people to understand but, nonetheless, the bridge is still available. -- ralphpnj Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels -> Snatch -> The Transporter -> Transporter 2 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/jazzfann/) ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49956 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
