The only case I'm aware of that riping twice produces different results is that different drives have different sample offsets. Of course this is handled automatically by anything using acuraterip (dbpoweramp/eac) http://www.accuraterip.com/ It's too bad that those two applications are the only ones to support acuraterip. -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50690 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Newbie Q - but related to Audiophiles
I'm also running my SB3 through an external DAC (Behringer DEQ2496), and I've found while my preamp benefits from an hour or two warm up time, the SB3 seems to sound fine as soon as it's switched on. I leave the SB3 off (AC supplied via a power conditioner which is normally switched off) rather than on standby. When I turn it on it needs to re-connect with the wireless router but this only takes 10-15 seconds and happens automatically. Be sure to try your Rhapsody 30-day trial, I'm on day 8 and have been finding some very good sounding recordings. 192kb MP3 actually sounds quite nice through a good system. Here are two Rhapsody recommendations from last night which I thought sounded very good: Buena Vista Social Club by Buena Vista Social Club (2004) The Three Pickers by Earl Scruggs (2003) -- kh6idf kh6idf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50759 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

That's just not true, as anyone can verify for themselves: First, you can rip the same disk twice and verify that both copies are identical. Second, you can buy two copies of the same disk and/or burn a CD-R copy of one, rip both, and verify that the resulting files are identical. Third (easiest and most convincing) - rip a copy of a CD and use accurip to compare it to thousands of other copies made by other accurip users on the internet. If you made a good copy the checksum will tell you that your copy is identical - -every single one of those billions of bits is identical - - to those other rips. For a normal disk there is precisely zero data loss at any stage of the CD creation, ripping, or storing cycle, full stop. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50690 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Does a better CD drive make better sound?
Well, (if I understood properly) the ripping process has three stages : 1. The drive reads the recorded file in CDA format (this is the important point in error detection, and that's where we need AccurateRip). 2. The software transforms this file in another format (WAV, FLAC etc). This process is error-free. 3. The software writes the file to disk (this process is error-free). Then, the player reads the file, and, up to (including) the reception of the flow by the network player all processes involved are error-free. From that point-on, quality (and thus money) of all components matter. -- Themis SB3 - Denon 3808 - Sonus Faber Grand Piano Domus Themis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14700 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50690 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Does a better CD drive make better sound?
The point of a CD drive is to convert a legacy format (CD) to a current one (audio data). Once you have it in an audio data format, whether wav, FLAC or Apple Lossless, you have a 100% guarantee that it will just work. To get it into that format, you just need something that can be aligned with AccurateRip (close on 100% of modern $20 drives), and then you check each disc as it rips. Once you have validated 19 in 20 rips (and you can see that the 20th is a buggered disc) you relax about this stage of the process and find somewhere else to spend your audio budget :) -- adamslim Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others SB+, EAR V20, Lowther Big Fun Horns with PM6As Living Voice OBX-R2s stuck in a corner looking lonely SB3, Charlize, Harbeth HL-P3ES Whoops I seem to have bought a record player... adamslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7355 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50690 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

@Themis For data streaming, HDD's etc. you are of course correct. CD-Audio is an 'ancient' digital format that is NOT deterministic. That's the reason you have to rip data instead of simlpe copying with CRC control. Since more than 20 years manufacturers of expensive CD transports made a fortune out of this fact. -- michel michel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4393 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50690 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

What makes the $3K CD transporter worth other than the minimized > loss (if so) in its circutry? > In my opinion: 1. What is important is the software that you use to extract and it's ability to control data loss. Hardware is not important : any decent 20$-drive could do the job. 2. No, there's NO loss in data streaming or storing, simply because data are packed in protocols that don't accept ANY errors (Ethernet for streaming, disk-controller device protocols for hard disks). 3. Once the data flow is received through the network device (Ethernet) at the final node (TP or SB) the transformation (and loss) begins, simply because there are NO protocols anymore : just plain transformations. So, each components/circuitry quality is important : better design, more expensive components result in a better (with less loss) digital or analog signal. Is the quality/price ration better on TP than SB ? Is the difference worth investing for ?
