For yourself? or as a product? For yourself, go for it. Its yours. But I
don't want it, and as a product, I think this is a terrible idea. IMHO, etc.

Its an audiophile product. Connect it to an audiophile amp. Or better
yet, some audiophile self amplified speakers.

I was thinking of something like the ICEpower 125ASX2, which has its
own integrated switched PSU. It can deliver up to 2x120W into 4 ohms,
and the complete amp module with PSU is just 80 x 160 mm. Sounds great
too.

At lower frequencies of course it would have minimal impact, because
straight lines between samples is not a bad approximation. But I'm just
guessing at what this filter does based on the square wave.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Looking at SPDIF with a scope...

2008-10-20 Thread DCtoDaylight

I told you I wasn't expecting this!

And I agree, it's creating a lot of harmonic information (distortion?)
based on no real information. The test cd I'm using only has a couple
of sine waves, and this square wave. I need to find or create
something with more options so I can try and figure out what it's
doing

The odd thing is that it does sound good with this filter engaged, but
perhaps the fact that the "extra" harmonics are going to be well above
20kHz means they aren't harmful because I can't hear them? On second
thought, that holds true for this 1kHz square wave, but not for
something much lower in frequency

Did I mention I wasn't expecting this?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Looking at SPDIF with a scope...

Very interesting. RDOT, a made up marketing term, appears to be
interpolating between samples without any "memory" of the previous
samples. They cite "the Fluency theory" which also appears to be
complete maketroid nonsense - esoteric indeed!

While at first glance one might think it makes a "better" square wave,
in fact this filter grossly misinterprets the signal. Going back to
what I was saying earlier, if you have a 44.1KHz PCM file, the signal's
bandwidth is 0 to 22.050KHz, and therefore it does not express the
waveform that was produced at the output. To interpolate a straight
line between every pair of successive samples is utterly wrong,
although I'd have to think on it some more to try and imagine what this
might sound like. I can't imagine it's good!

2008-10-20 Thread DCtoDaylight

So the possible problems with the TACT up sampling got me to thinking
about an up sampler I use (Assemblage D2D-2), and as I posted on the
Humble pie thread, I was happy not to see any apparent issues with it's
upsampled square wave.

So onto another toy, this time an Esoteric DV50 universal player. This
beast has two different upsamplers built in, which you can select from
the front panel. The first, a FIR filter, creates the usual square
wave, with a normal looking harmonic structure, but the second, the
RDOT filter, creates something different! It's apparently adding a lot
of harmonic information, as evidenced by the mostly flat top.

I wasn't expecting this!

yes...and yes!
You will need to find a company or friend who can do it though. The
benefits are very significant.

The Numerik was designed to work by slaving the transport (Kinn Karik
Mk1 originally) to the DAC clock. This gives the best possible digital
system using an outboard DAC.

I use a Welborne Labs linear supply for my SB3. I use toslink from the
sb3 to the GW Labs to eliminate any electical noise that might be
riding on the coax output from the power supplies and/or display in the
SB3.

I originally picked toslink when I was running the SB3 to the Big Ben.
I just kept using it when I got the GW Labs.

FWIW, the product listed on the GW Labs website (
http://www.gw-labs.com/products/index.html ) is spec'ed at 96kHz, but
that may be old information.

That pretty much nails it for me - sounds like there may be a tiny
fault (probably a bad electrolytic capacitor) on the right channel of
the Numerik output stage. If the popping was on both channels that

OK - then if I'm understanding correctly, with the SB turned off the
Numerik will be muting its output as a good DAC should, in the absence
of any spdif input. So you won't get any popping if there is a fault in
the Numerik output stage while the SB is off. I really feel you should
get the unit serviced by Linn.

You could prove this by attempting to measure DC across the output of
the Numerik while the dac is on but not playing any music. There
shouldn't be any.

One final question - is the popping in both channels or just one?

Kim - where to start?
1) Thanks for the tip about the Monarchy - that is helpful.
2) The GW Labs appears to have been upgraded to 192... not sure if that
means it would or wouldn't work with the as your older model does?
3) I don't want under any circumstances to rewrite my files to disk as
48k resamples - so you idea of using a hardware upsampler in advance of
the TACT to try and avoid its ASRC is good - thanks.
I sense you use Toslink to connect the Sb to the GW? presumably you
find this improves things? - do you use the stock SB PSU or something
different?

Thanks for your time and input,

SB3 has DC blocking caps of course, but it does not have resistors to
keep the output at 0V if there's no load. The vast majority of preamps
have some input resistance which does this. This subject has come up
before, and I forget the details but somehow we ended up with the
conclusion that not having those resistors on the output device was
standard practice and considered OK. But in this case, what's probably
happening is that there is no load at all on SB3's outputs and this is
causing them to drift up to its op-amp's bias of ~4V.

Thank you for your response. I forgot to mention in my previous post
that I did a little experiment by disconnecting the SB3 from the main
and tried switching between various inputs. No "pop" sound.

I actually thought that there was something wrong with the Numerik and
so I rang Linn up this morning. It was the engineer who actually
suggested that I should try this experiment.

I wish I could try connecting the SB3 to the Numerik using an optical
link, but unfortunately the Numerik doesn't have an optical input.

Any thought?

Based on what you have written it would appear that the Numerik may
have a small DC offset on its analogue output. The issue is not with
the SB. This isn't usual with Linn gear, but it is possible that the
Numerik may have a faulty output cap that should be blocking DC but
isn't. The Numerik will be quite old by now...you should probably think
about getting it serviced.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 Making "Pop" Sound through Speakers

2008-10-20 Thread Thanaset

Hello

Has anyone here experienced this?

I've got my SB3 coupled with Linn Numerik, which I just got a couple of
days ago, using coaxial digital interconnect. The pair then feed
through Cyrus pre and powers.

I notice that whenever I change the source at the pre I hear a little
audible "pop" sound coming out of my speakers. This is especially true
when I switch in and out of the SB3.

I've just had the SB3 for over a year and don't think it's developed
any faults or anything. But before I hooked it up with the Linn, I
never heard this sort of noise before.

Could anyone kindly let me know if this is common? Thank you.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter with power amp?

2008-10-20 Thread seanadams

inside? Sure, there's room. That would be an interesting mod. The most
important thing when wiring direct to an amp is to make sure you have
some analog attenuation (i.e. resistor divider) before the amp to limit
the maximum level.

How have you determined that it doesn't upsample on digital out and
uses it only as a pass through? Is this written in the manual or have
you tested this yourself?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter with power amp?

2008-10-20 Thread StigErik

A good idea, or what? I'm thinking of modding my Transporter with a
class-D power amp. There will be some shielding issues of course, but
there is plenty of space inside the Transporter to put in a low-power
amp!

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 + Cambridge DacMagic ($400) Review

2008-10-20 Thread ajmitchell

System as tested:
Speakers: Hyperion 938 (http://www.hyperionsound.com/HPS-938.htm)
Classe: CAP-2100
(http://www.classeaudio.com/delta/detail-cap-2100.htm)
Source: SB3 (interconnect misc digital)
DAC: Cambridge DACMagic (interconnect Nordost Red dawn)

Review
I own three SB3s and a couple of SB2s on various systems as well as a
transporter which I sold last year. I have relied on the DACs in the
SB3 or in some on-board home cinema amps. As a baseline I have found
the SB3 DACs to be good but I have long looked for a cheap DAC which
sounds better than the inbuilt DAC. I am an audio skeptic and won’t
keep anything I am not convinced is value for money.
Cambridge Audio introduced the original DacMagic in 1994 with the
specific intention of upgrading CD players. Time has moved on, and
processing power is much much cheaper so refinement should finally be
possible at a reasonable price. The new DacMagic is totally new. The
2008 DacMagic has Adapted Time Filtering (ATF™) asynchronous upsampling
technology converts 16-24 bit audio (at any standard sampling frequency
between 32-96kHz) to 24 bit/192kHz. It relies on Twin Wolfson WM8740
high quality DACs (one per channel) with Incoming sampling rate
indicator 32 / 44.1 / 48 / 88.2 / 96kHz. On the connection side there
are actually five inputs (2xS/PDIF & 2x Toslink and 1x USB) but this
is highly deceptive as although ONLY one can be connected at one time
thus the unit will not act as a switching digital selector.I have
an old audiolap DAC from 1990 that will do this!). The manual even says
don’t plug in multiple input cables at the same time...even if off! The
USB input connects direct to PC without drivers to act as a very high
quality sound card...I have not tested this (but a review is here
http://www.techradar.com/products/audio-visual/hi-fi-and-audio/audio-systems/cambridge-audio-dacmagic-digital-to-analogue-converter-465736/review).
There are singled ended phono and remarkably XLR balanced audio
outputs.which for me was useful as these connected straight to the
balanced amp inputs with the Nordost cable which I already had. It also
have digital outputs although these only “pass-through”there is no
upsampling here. The upsampling only works for the analogue outputs.

So enough pre-amble. Does the DacMagic work with the SB3? Yes it does!
It certainly enhances the sound giving a cleaner more dynamic effect.
The sound to my ears is comparable with the transporter I owned (this
may not be quite fair because you need an A-B switch to compare such
small differences head-to-head). I would not discount the possibility
that the SB3+DacMagic is better than the transporter.lets just say
to my ears I am happier with this combination. To give some kind of
yardstickI would liken the improvement to going from a 128kbs MP3
to a 256kps per track. Its definitely a step up although not
revolutionary. For example, its not quite as good as going from 128 to
lossless FLAC/Apple for example (its about 50% of that improvement).
To look at this another way, if this cost $1000 I would say I would
consider it, if it cost $2000 I would say too expensive but at $400
(£200) I say I’ll buy a few, one for each room.

The DacMagic's 32 bit DSP runs Cambridge Audio's own proprietary
digital filter algorithms with three different filter options
available: Linear Phase, Minimum Phase and Steep. Linear phase is the
same as used in the flagship Azur 840C upsampling CD player. There is a
very subtle difference between the filters, to my ears only “minimum”
sounded differentand then ever so slightly flat.

Some other advantages: its small...the form factor is not much bigger
that the SB3 (within 1-2cm in width) so you can probably sit them
together. It also seems happy to be left on, and has no start up
delay..so It could be tucked away out of sight. Its well built and
has its own (basic) external power supply...this could be upgraded at a
later date although the manufacturer doesn’t recommend it. Oh yes, there
is no remote...but I doubt one is needed. I have not yet tested it with
some of my other digital sources...CDplayer/SkyHD/PS3/PC via USB! but I
expect the same degree of improvement here too. Lets see.

So there you have it. A cost effective upgrade with few drawbacks (no
remote, no switching, no upsampling on digital out, effectively only 1x
digital input). Someone out there needs to compare this “bargain DAC”
with one of the higher end DACs and see how close Cambridge have come
to perfection.

Alex
Ps. I’ll post some pics later this week.
