I can't answer all of this now but:

Toslink vs coax - no difference on the scope
tried every FS-OUT - no difference on scope
rcs is set to mode 2.0 (no sub is attached) - changing the mode makes
no difference except to mono where the signal amplitude increases but
stays the same shape.

I will email Boz later tonight.

Since you've never tested the TacT RCS 2.2X, this like most of your
statements, "Not to mince words," proves nothing.

Has Phil Leigh contacted TacT's designer(Boz. [EMAIL PROTECTED]) on
this issue?

What mode(2.2 or 2.0) is he operating the RCS in?

What FS is the RCS output set to?

Does the load impedance perfectly match the cable impedance Phil Leigh

Is any of the signal being absorbed, and none of it reflected back to
the source?

Has he tried Toslink between his SB3 and the TacT RCS?

Will try that...this testing seems to involve me borrowing all the

The SB comments are not from TACT themselves.

SB into DAC (no TACT) = "perfect" squarewave.

Phil, you had a square on that test-cd. Connect a cd-player with s/pdif
to the tact and see what happens with the square signal direcly from
CD. That also eliminates the lame comments like the SB is to blame.

I should really read up on DSP's... I didn't realize the signal goes

Feed the SB3 directly to your DAC. If the square waves are fine, that
proves it's the TACT that's the problem.

Not to mince words, if they haven't they're incompetent (not the

Ah, into Dutch music now heh ;-) The Mai Tai tracks are also Dutch, but
these girls are of the Dutch-Surinam (now independant but most have
Dutch pasports and live in Holland ;-) type, so nice South-American
soul-disco.

American readers must realize that most of this music is called
post-disco dance/club music, although in Europe it was still called
disco even though there wasn't any brass-section anymore etc. I think
it's also called euro-disco but I'm not so sure on the genre-naming
around the world. So you shouldn't read "disco" on European websites as
the "Saturday Night Fever" kind of music.

If you like rock music, the best from Holland is (in my preferred
order): Herman Brood & the Wild Romance, Golden Earring, Anouk (very
good, current), Brainbox (with Jan Akkerman, who even Eric Clapton etc.
call the world's best guitar player!), Cuby & the Blizzards (with Herman
Brood playing piano), Ekseption (progressive rock), Shocking Blue (song
Venus), Vandenberg (hard rock). This is all with English lyrics, I
don't like any Dutch lyrics bands.

But if you're into rock, the Ben Liebrand sets are not really what you
want. I'm all OT but as it's my thread: Ilse DeLange (Jazz/blues/soul)
is *very* popular now with her new album (sold out in the USA already).
Mathilde Santing & Rob Hoeke R&B band are/were other good Dutch bands.

Most famous Dutch-American artists are Van Halen and Bruce
Springsteen.

If you're looking for any audiophile-grade releases of Dutch music, ask
me because I know most.

cheers,
Nick.

Good question - so far nothing much other than suggestions that I
should upgrade my power supply (already done it) and I should
concentrate on getting low-jitter into the TACT. Also some subtle
comments about the SB not being a suitably low-jitter source for the
TACT (which I don't buy at the moment - I don't think this is jitter
related and as Sean says, it would have to be pretty gross correlated
jitter to cause this effect on the scope!).

You know what - I'm not sure they have tested it like this, nor has any
reviewer that I can track down. Or...if they have they aren't saying.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Looking at SPDIF with a scope...

2008-10-27 Thread Phil Leigh

Just eliminated another variable:
1) 16-bit vs 24-bit files - no difference
2) downloaded another test tone generator (NCH) and that produces
identical results to Audacity.

I've done lots of googling and can find no reference to the AD1896 ASRC
chip misbehaving itself in this way. That only leaves the surrounding
TACT operating system as the source of the problem...or maybe, just
maybe the bypass setting isn't quite as "bypass" as it might be?

Next step is to try and digitally record the SPDIF out of the TACT.
I'll see if I can borrow some equipment...

But - I'm pretty confident in the scope display right now.

I agree this can't be jitter-related... at least not in the
conventional sense.
