Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Finally bought some new speakers
Congrats :) I've got a pair of red ones and I couldnt be happier. I listened to a lot of small speakers up to about $1000 a pair and IMO the little S-520 are better than speakers easily 2x their price. What I love most is the fluid midrange and delicate top end. I dont find them overly bright either and in a small room, bass is surprisingly extended. I cant think of anything I dont like about them. -- svtcontour svtcontour's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12637 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55258 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Answering correct to your question, I voted "No", because I have passive attenuators soldered in my plugs right at the power amps. But for me this is nevertheless a direct connection from the transporter to the power amp, so voting with "no" just because of the attenuators feels totally wrong. bye Wolfgang -- wolfzell wolfzell's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8643 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55246 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I can't imagine too many people go from the SB/TP to power w/o some attenuation as most would be way too loud. Perhaps, two questions are in order: direct into power w/no pre, but attenuation and direct w/no pre or attenuation. -- Shredder Shredder's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11380 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55246 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linear PS with Power Console?
About 2 years ago I "heard" a difference in my SB3 when I plugged the WW into my power conditioner as opposed to the wall outlet. It seemed to effect the same improvement I "heard" using the linear PSU I had bought. I am unwilling to argue that this wasn't placebo because I didn't do this particular comparo blind. However the improvement seemed pretty obvious and that's why I didn't bother with blind testing. I concluded I didn't need the linear PSU if I had a good power conditioner. If I had to do the comparo again blind I don't know if I would hear a diff. -- tomjtx tomjtx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7449 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55364 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I drive the 405 from the variable output of my Beresford DAC. I adjust the volume pot on the Beresford to a suitable volume with the SB volume at about 85%. That gives me room for adjustment when sitting in comfort. I flip the volume right down for adverts on commercial radio - and clearly I am not interested in quality at that time - only in knowing when to turn the volume up again. If you're comparing bass you will notice the same bass played louder sounds more impactful and deeper somehow. Also (as with other parts of the frequency spectrum) distorted bass can paradoxically seem to have more 'impact' than clean unclipped bass. But comparing apples with apples in terms of loudness is essential. In the scheme of things changing your source is not the right thing to do to improve bass. You're already using Inguz, done properly you can improve the bass greatly with this. I use 12 bands up to 125Hz (nothing above that) - Inguz does a great job of fine adjustments to get a more even bass response. You will notice some 'great bass tracks' not sounding so great with flat bass response. Some others will sound more amazing. But you will notice music in general sounding better, drums and bass guitar get separated and everything sounds a little more realistic. Depends what you're after. You're limited by the speakers (or sub) in the end though. A new source won't give you that big advance. The SB3 is pretty good - especially once you take into account the distinction between a difference and an improvement. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linear PS with Power Console?
Hello, Currently I am using my Squeezebox3 with the standard PS connected to a Belkin PF50 power console: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=250844# I am using the digital outputs of the SB connected to an external DAC. The system sounds great as it is now and the Power Console already made a huge improvement in definition, instrument separation, aeration and bass impact. In this situation do you think it would be still worth considering replacing the standard PS of the SB with a Linear PS? Someone brought this up in an earlier discussion on this subject but I think it's worth repeating. On their newest album (that won the Mercury Music Prize) they state that the album has be mastered at a lower volume than most and you should just turn it up a bit. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45094 -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55212 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
