Best candidate there so far are some B&W 683 or 684 > floorstanding speakers plus a rotel power amp (RB-1050 or RB-1070). In my experience, it came down to hifi speakers sounding "great" versus monitors sounding "accurate". That is what each is designed to do, so no surprises there. I found studio monitors to be too directional for living room use as well, even the "midfield" ones. Some monitors had unacceptable tweeter hiss as well, including the dynaudios. My favorite monitors however, for what it's worth, were the dynaudios you mentioned - but still no match for a good set of consumer separates (not even close). Good luck with your ideas - I predict it will probably just come down to your personal listening preference, and whether you are willing to trade the audible (and visual) benefits of separates against the convenience of monitors. But we shall see (assuming you post back please with your own findings)! :) -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58179 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3
Hello all, I have been very happy with my current SB3 since i got it in the fall. I fell upon an opportunity to pick up a reasonably priced Transporter to replace the SB3. My situation is this, I read and read that one group of people believe a better DAC will be noticeable in a mid-upper level system, while others believe a DAC is a DAC, they all do the same and sound the same. I plan to test both while there in my setup but i am seeking some opinions. As a reference point my setup is this: Ascend Sierras for main speakers Proceed Amp3 for fronts Proceed Preamp Oppo 980 SB3 The oppo & SB3 DAC's are in use due to the analog preamp. So ultimately I am wondering will the Transporter be an improvement over the DAC's in each of my current pieces being it can use its own for streaming files & other digital inputs. I just wanted to hear some thoughts before it arrives. Thanks guys! Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice on pro studio monitor vs consumer hifi amp + speakers
Yup agree with all that has been said. By "near field" I meant not the other side of the room - although obviously they can be set up this way. You are so right - the room/speaker interaction is everything - which is why monitors can get fatiguing in a domestic environment. Not many of us have the luxury of a true dedicated high end listening room. I actually rather like active speakers - but again as Darrel Yeates says - it all depends. +1 on the Linkwitz Orions. Bastani's a close second. But you do need space for them (not suitable for small apartments). Incidentally the BBC get their monitors from a bunch of folk - Harbeth,DynAudio, PMC to name 3. The BBC aren't exclusive to one outfit. Depends who and what for. I would add that a relative newbie into hi fi is generally far better off with speakers designed for a domestic environment than those designed for studio monitor applications, amplification aside. What I really want is a pair of active harbeth SHL5's he he. -- tricka Transporter +/- Lavry DA 10 - LFD Zero - Harbeth C7 es3's "Harbethed" and lovin it tricka's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11614 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58179 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice on pro studio monitor vs consumer hifi amp + speakers
Well there are some interesting links at the bottom of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_monitor Particularly the sound on sound comparison from which I conclude that the design goals are essentially the same but consumer speakers do relatively better because they are updated more frequently. This would still appear to apply to more upto date speakers. From what I can tell, the Dynaudio BM 6A mk II speakers I was looking at are based on an older design than the newly introduced excite series, which may put them at a disadvantage. However, with active speakers there is definatly an engineering advantage. Firstly having an active crossover seems like it should be a significant electrical advantage, while removing the passive crossover and the amplifier casing and packaging should prove to be cost advantages. In the case of the BM 6A mk II, it would also appear dynaudio have taken the opportunity to extend the bass response by 3db by having 2x the amp power for the woofer than the tweeter. I really would love to have the opportunity to listen to some studio monitors and consumer gear in the same room so I could make my own mind up, but I can't see an easy way to do that... -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58179 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice on pro studio monitor vs consumer hifi amp + speakers
My PMCs are studio speakers too, in fact I bought them from a recording studio. :) I have friends used to B&Ws and they both say they prefer the brighter B&W presentation. One of them's a bass fiend and he doesn't like the bass on the PMCs either, but he admits that they do "on certain tracks only" show they go low enough and that they "love real instruments". The other guy has a much better B&W system and he's critical too (!) but he admits they provide more detail than his system. I think the point is that studio monitors don't make everything sound "nice" in a samey way (for example I can remember Mercy Street by Peter Gabriel sounding a lot lot nicer on some Epos speakers another friend had) but they let you hear the differences between good and iffy recordings. Having said that there is very little in terms of recording quality that puts me off listening entirely. Listening to demo tracks is boring. :^) Darren -- darrenyeats SB3 / Inguz -> Krell KAV-300i (pre bypass) -> PMC AB-1 Dell laptop -> JVC UX-C30 mini system darrenyeats's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10799 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58179 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Should I use replaygain ?
The main advantage of replay gain is that you don't have to adjust the volume between tracks because of loudness differences. I don't exactly recall at what volume level data is actually lost but it's considerably lower than the typical replay gain adjustment. Sound quality is still affected because of the lower SNR. If it's noticeable depends on your ears and your system. You should try for yourself. Or you can enable replay gain for casual listening and disable it for critical listening. -s. -- slimpy slimpy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1524 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58274 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
