Well - If they are going to run everything through a Sonic Maximiser or
whatever, all bets are off! :)

Thanks for the replies. It would appear that the Sony does indeed have
a direct mode, though their name and description isn't as clear as I
would like. Their AFD (Auto Format Direct) when set to Auto has the
following description "Presents the sound as it was recorded/encoded
without adding any surround effects"

Also, did you know: Some streaming broadcasters apply digital DSP
enhancement to their stream, which definitely can make their result
seem to sound "better" than the original CD. Most won't disclose
exactly which DSP's they are using, or how much - since they don't want
others to copy their station sound.

So possibly it might not be recording quality differences you are
hearing after all, but DSP enhancement instead! :)

keep in mind: a lot of broadcasters, probably even classical stations,
apply EXTRA multi-compression to things to keep the signal/noise ratio
decent for over-the-air transmission (and to stop 'overs', which are
actually illegal for broadcasters i think, because they cause FM data
to leak into the next station)

Yes, Szell/LSO/Handel The Water Music and Ozawa's Scheherazade fairly
recently.

I have vinyl and CD of the Szell and the FM playback sounded much more
like my vinyl copy. The Szell on CD is really dead sounding. It wasn't
dynamic at all. The Ozawa on FM was almost as good as my vinyl copy. I
didn't feel I was missing much at all.

I can't tell you whether it was WGBH, KUSC or the local Austin
classical station I was listening to but all 3 sound really good.

There have also been one or two jazz cuts that I have on CD and/or
vinyl but I can't recall the albums at the moment. They all sounded
quite good on FM compared to CD - I was surprised and impressed.

Cheers,

Pete

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 + Cambridge DacMagic ($400) Review

2009-02-05 Thread GRC

Just thought I'd add my 10 cents worth here. Bought a CA DacMagic a
couple of weeks ago while I was back in the UK and it's been on ever
since (whole system is left powered on 24/7 since it's solar
powered*).

It is - quite simply - the dog's danglies. More of everything IMHO
except perhaps soundstage. But then again my Naim gear doesn't really
"do" imaging as some of you old timers will know, and my speakers are
too far apart anyway.

I expected crisper treble, tightened mid-range but wasn't expecting
more bass. Still not sure which filter option to use on the DacMagic -
any views? I suspect my hearing is not quite up to scratch these days
- combination of moderate antiquity and self-abuse (aurally speaking of
course) so I'm still playing.

So if you've got £200 sterling just get one. I'm sure you can get
better for more but if I had more I'd have got a Transporter.

-Obrigado e boa noite- as we say round these parts.

Audiolab 8000A pre-amp stage - 8000P power amp. All powered via an Olson
filtered 4 way and dedicated earth spike wired with Kimber cable. As
soon as I replaced the standard sb wallwart with the new psu connected
via IEC lead to the mains I got the hum. I think the problem possibly
lies in the fact that the 4 way metal box has the kimber kable direct
to an earth terminal on the Russ Andrews super socket, as well as all
the mains leads being individually earthed. By unearthing the SB it
stopped the hum immediately. I can't see it presenting a major problem
as it'll still earth via the Phono's anyway.
What do you think?

Hmmm.. If only used for dance music, this setup will certainly give you
a lot of deep bass since the Primus is only preamp and the logans only
has amplifier for the subwoofer, but why connect something like this to
a Soundblaster anyway ? it will probably only reveal how a computer
soundcard can distort a perfectly good wav file :-)

The best advice is to listen to both and decide for yourself. The same
DAC chip can sound very different depending upon the surrounding
engineering.

Do bear in mind, though, that unless the Sony has a "direct" mode, it
will convert the analog signal from the SB to digital, then back to
analog, and you will be using the Sony's DAC.

Hi there!
The SOX code is not in the firmware, it's on the server and is only
invoked for bitrates higher than can be handled natively. So, if you
play a normal 44.1/16 FLAC, WAV or MP3 it won't go via SOX. A 96/24
would go via SOX.

I'm running on 7.4 nightly and it sounds fine to me (I only use FLAC).

Only Sean could comment on whether there have been any firmware changes
that might have altered replay sound quality.

Phil
