Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Why Reclock If Using Low Jitter DAC
The A/B comparison was done precisely everything was matched, gain matched, same cables, etc .come on, were talking about a bunch of audiophiles here. Everyone wanted the transporter to sound better (including me). I was actually auditioning the transporter. All five of us (not one of use with less than twenty years of experience) heard an immediate difference when switching between the two aforementioned devices. Now, I tell you, I really hate to use the same old rhetoric here, but quite frankly, it was like lifting a veil. There is really no better way to explain the difference. I cant say the sound stage was bigger, I cant say that the central image was better; I wont even say that the bass was more defined. The resolution was just better. There was a difference in clarity and it was definitely not shrill, bright, or forward. The sound to all five of us was better. The Cullen Stage IV DAC is no slouch whats so hard to believe about this? SB hasnt cornered the market on DACs ..I will be leaving my Cullen-modded DAC for the new PS Audio PWD, as it is improves upon the Cullen DAC even more so than the Cullen DAC improved over the TP. You can call this subjective which, of course it is, but truly, I know what I heard. I was actually hoping that I would like the TP more. -- timequest timequest's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=25640 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63796 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] iTunes AAC 256 to Flac on a Transporter
My opinion is that you've got the purchasing decisions in the wrong order. Start with the speakers and pick the amp according to that. You may even decide the very best speakers within your budget are active speakers which means you will not need a separate amp (or more channels of your chosen amp). I would go active myself but even with passives I would choose the speakers first. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] iTunes AAC 256 to Flac on a Transporter
With a milestone birthday around the corner, I'm seriously considering buying a Transporter with a Bryston 2BSST (squared) amp. Speakers TBD. The bulk of my music collection is made up of truly lossless flac files. There is, however, a reasonable amount of iTunes Plus music (256 AAC) in my collection which I've in turn converted to flac. With that in mind, I'm interested in opinions from the audiophile community here as to the sound quality of a 256 AAC file on something as 'revealling' as the Transporter. (I'm assuming the conversion from AAC 256 to flac is completely transparent). Thanks in advance. -- ShutterShock ShutterShock's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3602 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64352 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Very nice speakers... Personally I wanted a configuration based on B&W 802d speakers. The only remaining questione were 1) which power amplifier to associate with and 2)pre-amplifier or not? I read a lot of forums and finally decided to test by myself. I took my TP and asked the dealer to test it directly connected to a power amp. Of course, he never heard about the TP and was very skeptical about a Logitech gear connected to a 10k bucks amplifier. But quickly he (and I) realized that the matching was just perfect, taking the best from the speakers! Finally and without any doubt, the configuration without pre-amplifier just appeared to be THE Solution, providing the best sonic performances for the smallest price (remember that a pre-amplifier is at least as expensive as the power amplifier itself). Thanks, so it sounds like one vote for no difference between a SB and a transporter used with an external DAC and one vote for it does make a difference. My DAC mods are from Affordable Audio in Venice CA. this is what he says about the mod. Solen capacitors for coupling, Caddock resistors for critical audio locations and upgraded opamps in the signal path. All at an Affordable price. Our diode board replaces the monolithic diode boards in the stock DAC for an even more refined sound. The tube is replaced as well but i do not recall what he used. Maybe i need to order a transporter with the 30 return policy and try it out myself. Its interesting to see different opinions. maybe it has to do with the equipment the transporter is connected to. -- lxgreen lector zoe preamp cary 120s amp squeezebox duet music hall 25.2 modded DAC lxgreen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30697 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64319 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Two days ago, I upgraded to XLR balanced cables (with a pair of Endler attenuators with -16 dB attenuation) and I noticed a sound improvement in term of spatialization and high frequencies definition. This just finished convincing me about the benefits of a pre-amplifier free configuration. As your power amp has balanced input, it could be worth trying to connect the TP with XLR cables. However, you'll probably need some passive attenuation... I agree with dealer issue in Sitzerland; I had the same problem a few months ago before buying my system. You have received a faulty unit, evaluated it, and decided that it's not good enough? Er, wouldn't you be better off getting a *working* unit and evaluating that? Would you take a car out on a test drive, even though it was running on only 2 cylinders, and had the handbrake binding, then decide not to buy it because it wasn't fast enough?? I would love to make it work because the functionality and looks are perfect. However, it has to sound at least appreciably better than the SB3 through my system to make it worth the $$. I'll report back after tonight. Howard -- Howard Passman Can I go home now? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Affordable PSU Upgrades for Classic
Herbach & Rademan sell a surplus power supply that outputs 5 volts at 2 amps for $10.00 You will have to change the output connector to one that will fit into the SB. The power supply will also accept different power cables, so you can try different types to see if they make any changes in the sound. http://www.herbach.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HAR&Product_Code=TM93PWS2476&Category_Code=PWS -- Wayne1 Wayne1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64278 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Affordable PSU Upgrades for Classic
Thanks iPhone. I every system I own (3), improving power delivery through cords or a PS Audio power plant has made a significant difference in my enjoyment of the music. Side note - A new Virtue One Amp with their 130w PSU fed by a classic Synergistic Master Coupler - wow! If I can screw around with the sound of the SB classic for $20 or so and maybe improve it, that sounds like more fun than measuring to me. Again - any links to regulated power supplies I could try are appreciated. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DAC reccomendations...
Yes, sorry, another DAC reccomandation thread. This week I bought a Transporter and was very much looking forward to having it. I expected to hear a better sound stage than my DUET or SB3 and was hoping for more natural highs and maybe a bit more warmth and *some* bass. The unit had some serious issues with a high frequency pop, scrathing sounds and stopping play. It would stream Internet Radio *almost* flawless, but wouldn't play flac's or m4a files at all without the before mentioned issues. I was going to return it for a replacement, but decided to listen to it as much as possible (1-4 minutes at a time) to see how it sounded compared to my favorite Revox CD player. Even without direct comparison it was obvious that it wasn't up to the task so I did a direct comparison to the SB3. Better? Maybe different is a better description. The soundstage seemed about the same, bass was maybe even less than the SB3. Highs may have been more defined, but the trade off in warmth and bass left me liking the SB3 better or about the same. I might pay $500 for the Transporter (love the looks), but not $2k. Next, I did a direct comparison to my Revox B226 Signature player. After listening to parts of 5 or 6 songs that I am very familiar with, I quit listening to the Transporter and spent the rest of my time listening to CD's on the Revox. The Revox has a great two dimensional sound stage, nice round bass and lots of warmth. The highs are very clean, but not un-natural. Not sterile at all. It's not perfect, but for my tastes it was the best player or transport I listened to at the time. So now you know what I like to hear when I listen. Warmth, nice two dimensional soundstage, nicely rounded bass and natural highs. That's my personal preferences and I'm looking for a DAC that I can run either the DUET or the SB3 through that will lean more towards that sound. It doesn't make sense to me to pay for the Transporter and then not use the DAC. Basically, it seems like your paying for all the nice outputs, of which I'd either use the RCA or balanced. That and the DAC. The SB3 sounds close enough to the Transporter where I think a nice DAC might give me what I'm looking for. Something close to the Revox with the convenience of the SB's. Don't blast me because I don't like the Transporter. To each is own. I love my SB's (4 of them) and the Transporter seems like a nice box, but the fact is (problems aside)it still isn't my cup of tea. Any ideas? Howard -- Howard Passman Can I go home now? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter with external DAc
I have tested the Sb3 and the TP's spdif digital output side by side (fed both into my meridian sDSP speakers inputs - can take 2 digital ins and seamless switching) and there is no discernable difference between them. -- Rodney_Gold Sb3/Z-sys RDP1/meridian DSP5500's TP/X-cans v3/Senns 650's TP/TACT 2.0/SCM 50a's TP/Meridian DSP5000's "The nicest thing about smacking your head against the wall is...the feeling you get when you stop" Rodney_Gold's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14618 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64319 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

But what kind of > improvement can i anticipate if i get a transporter and connect this to > either the Music Hall DAC or a more expensive (presumably better) DAC. I am using the transporter with the AES/EBU digital out to a Lyngdorf DPA-1, and I can say that the improvement was immediately audible, specially in the resolution, presence and transparency of the mid-high and high frequencies. I always felt that the transporter DAC was a bit boring and veiled in those freqs, like it lacked air around it. Transporter dac is very good, better than most in its price range but its not SOTA, of course you can do better, for the same money or a bit more. Since this is a slimdevices biased forum, most will tell you that you need to spend 10k+ to do better I have at the moment a 25.2 DAC on lend and already changed the tube to a e188cc nos, however Im still not totally impressed, I will be using it in my office rig where I currently have a becnchmark dac1. My favorite dealer always gets me to try new stuff, so I did, but I think Im staying with the benchmark.
