Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Nakamichi Amp 1 any good?

2010-03-12 Thread peterw

I haven't looked at prices for the gear you mention, but I think you
should consider amps with rs232 or ethernet ports (and well-documented,
well-designed protocols -- Cambridge being one example of good physical
ports but IMO poor protocols). Newer gear like that from Denon makes it
easier to have the same sort of remote/computer control over your amp
that we're accustomed to having over our Squeezeboxes.

My setup:

Onkyo TX 7220 Receiver (soon to be replaced by a new (integrated) amp)
Onkyo Integra TA 2250 Tapedeck

Onkyo SC 360 speakers (to be replaced some day)

Marantz CD-67 mk. II OSE CD-Player

and now a squeezebox :)

Except for the Marantz and the SB3 it has remained largely unchanged
for the last years.

I have previewed a Marantz PM 6003 and an Onkyo A-5 amp so far (the
Onkyo runs circles around the Marantz imho) and was pleasantly surprised
how well my speakers still hold up (considering their age), but the
receiver is definitively ripe for retirement. I am still thinking about
testing a NAD too, but considering how much I already like the Onkyo, I
am not sure it is worth the trouble?

Even not having had time for really checking it out yet, the Onkyo sure
sounds fine with my setup (much better than the Marantz ever did). It
seems to me that have not changed their sound philosophy much, but just
produced a (very much) refined version of it (alas at twice the price).
It also uses it own DAC very well and really starts to shine once it is
fed digitally. Using the SB3 I even seem to be able to hear differences
between the SB3's three outputs - with coax being slightly superior to
the other two (coax>optical>analog).

It makes a real difference with the CD-67 though. It sounded somewhat
dull using the analog input, but sounds really great now using the
optical input.

I have a pair of Sennheiser RS 140 wireless headphones. I have a
Transporter as well as a receiver. The Headphones is attached to the
SB receiver and then I can listen to music allaround the house and
outside up to about 300 meters away from the headphonestation. Nice when
you are cutting grass in the garden and so. It works very fine and the
sound is not high end but ok. You can of course also connect them to The
Transporter.
The advantage with the receiver, is that the family can listen to what
they want on The Transporter, while I am cutting grass and shouting "I

Phil Leigh;524501 Wrote:
> Hmmm... weird. IIRC there is no path between mains ground (on the SB

Yes, there is no such path. The SB has a floating ground, and as a
result there is no way for any ripple from the PSU to be shunted to
earth. Under typical usage conditions (unbalanced connection to an
earthed amp), the ground plane gets earthed via the amp's earth, and the
ripple is shunted.

But the usual way to connect an unbalanced output to a balanced input
is signal to hot, ground to cold, with the interconnect's screen
connected only at the balanced input ground. (The purpose of doing it
like this is to break ground loops). But of course I had forgotten that
it's done this way because the unbalanecd source is typically grounded,
which isn't the case for a SB, and so whatever voltage happens to be on
the ground plane gets interpreted as signal.

Hi,

I'm running SqueezeCenter 7.3.3 on WinXP, on a miniature PC with a VIA

It is a low powered and silent machine, that is turned on 24/7.

Unfortunately it is not powerful enough to run Inguz. :(

Does anybody know if out there, some simple EQ plugin exists for
SqueezeCenter?
Something like EQ in Foobar?

Thanks in advance,

Softsqueeze is viewed as a Transporter and supporting 24/96 and so no
downsampling is done.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Battery powered Transporter

2010-03-12 Thread kphinney

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone has been able to mod the TP for use with battery
power, รก la Red Wine Audio?

I'm setting up in Australia, a 240v country, having sold off everything
except my Red Wine amp and TP - the only 240v gear I owned besides the
speakers which were to large to ship.

Now I'm speaker hunting and found a beautiful set of 6" FE Fostex
driven horns in the $5k range (hand made in Oz).

Given the layout of my new apartment it would be nice to be able to but
my TP on a wheeled rack that I can slide up to the couch and only
concern myself with the speaker cables (very thin with this quick
setup).

The wheeled cart is curved and thick clear acrylic made for up to a
65lb amp/pre and the TP looks very nice on it.

Battery power would be nice so I don't have to unplug/plug when I move
it from one side of the couch to the other. AND I now truly appreciate
Vinny's low noise associated with his gear. AND there seems to be a
heck of a lot of room vacant in the TP.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sound quality between wav and flac

2010-03-12 Thread Stratmangler

I was intrigued by this notion of there being an audible difference
between FLAC and WAV files, so I have conducted a little experiment of
my own.

I ripped just one track of a CD.
To make it a bit more all encompassing I decided to rip to 2 lossless
uncompressed formats and 2 lossless compressed formats.
These formats are WAV, AIFF, ALAC & FLAC respectively.
All tracks were ripped with the same ripping tool (dbPoweramp), and all
tracks were ripped securely on first pass and returned identical
AccurateRip results. Indeed, the checksums for all of the rips were
identical.

I then copied the file over into My Music on my system, and adjusted
the value of WAV playback to native in my Squeezebox Server client - all
the other formats were already set as native, so no need to adjust
anything.

Then I sought out the folder with the four rips and had a listen.
I used my laptop to control the playback and view the gui interface
remotely, and I had no indication as to which track was which in terms
of playback.
And I can't hear any bloody difference between any of them !

Which leads me to a number of possible conclusions.

Either there are no audible differences or my system does not resolve
highly enough to make the differences audible or my hearing is shot, or
maybe any combination of the previous options apply.

YMMV

Chris :)

Yes,

I guess I'll have to consider using a lower compression level. I don't

Since we are on the subject of 24/96, I thought I read in a post by

24/48 (obviously not a very good algorithm). Is this old information
now that newer version of squeezeserver have been released?

Yes, FLAC compression levels of 7-8 or above have been found to cause
problems. The problems manifest themselves as distortion, or sometimes
drop outs. Two things to keep in mind, this only affects high bit rate
recordings (24/96, 24/88), lower rates play fine. I believe it also
affects some material more than others. Some sort of interaction
between the compression algorithm, and the material it's trying to
compress.

Don't know about the SB3, but there is certainly some mains ripple on
the ground plane of my SB2 (using the stock PSU), so it would appear on
the screen of the coax SPDIF output. I'd guess that the same may be true
of the SB3, since it uses pretty much the same internals as the SB2.
Whether it might affect the analogue circuitry in a connected DAC will
depend on the DAC itself, of course. If the DAC has a mains ground
connection, the ripple should be shunted to earth.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Nakamichi Amp 1 any good?

While it is true that Nak are primarily known for their wonderful
cassette decks, back in the late 80s/early 90s they built a wide range
of state-of-the-art components. Items such as the OMS7 CD player, ST7
tuner, CA7 preamp and PA7 power amp were pretty much top-tier items (if
you ignore the loony high-end boutique stuff). The power amps licenced
Stasis technology from Threshold (designed by Nelson Pass), but as far
as I am aware they were built by Nak, not OEM'd.

They also made a pretty amazing turntable that was capable of measuring
whether the hole in the vinyl was off-centre and would relign itself to
compensate and eliminate the resultant wow.

I know nothing about the Amp 1, though.

Where did you read this? - there is some VERY LOW level, very high
frequency noise visible on the analogue outputs of the SB3, which is
probably breakthrough from the VFD display circuitry.

There is no evidence of "pretty serious electrical noise issues" on the
s/pdif that I am aware of.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...
SB Touch Beta (wired) - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W -
MF Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods) - Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x
LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters, Blue
