Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Why cannot you make Transporter support 176.4 and 192Khz/24?

2010-03-23 Thread andyg

If you want to work on insane sample rates, your best bet is to talk to
John Swenson who is working on doing this for SB Touch, since the
firmware for that is open enough.

The ip3k firmware can never be open-sourced unfortunately, as it
contains proprietary code from Ubicom.

One possible work around for the compiler issue is student licenses.
Many companies offer those for free, for the duration of a course of
study (6 months or so). There's usually a lot of restrictions on use
though, and of course absolutely no commercial application is allowed.
Sadly, I expect they would take a dim view on someone working on
updates to the firmware of a commercial product...

This makes zero sense. Its an EOL product. Live with the bugs, or buy a
new product that does what you want. Perhaps if the TP was new, but its
not. Moore's law has marched on. There are better DAC chips, faster DSP
chips, faster and cheaper embedded CPUs, even faster NICs.

Plus, why in the world would someone think that any time spend to
support 176/24 and 192Khz/24 makes any sense when there is no source
material out there.

As a wish, this makes no sense. As a practical project, it makes far less.

I'm sure the firmware bugs could be fixed (if there was anyone to work
on them).

The VFD displays in the TP are going to fail at some point...

That is not a realistic request. Sean and Dean talked in the past about
making the firmware be under an Open Source license. But the sticking
point is that the firmware needs a special compiler and linker, and the
license for that costs solid five figures. So they thought that no one
would spring for a legal license, so there was no reason to release the
firmware source code.

I have worked on other embedded systems, and expensive tools are
frequent in the business.

Michael, in my opinion it isn't going to happen. However, there is
every chance that the Touch will be able to support these bit rates,
since it is effectively a Linux box with a much more powerful cpu,
running a less proprietary driver that can be tweaked - and Mr. Swenson
is working on it.
The tp is sadly a dead end.

What Sean implied was that every last ounce of CPU power is being used
already. There is nowhere to go with this.

The TP firmware source code is proprietary.

With the help of one of the gurus here, I modded my Transporter with
Burson discrete HD op-amps, plus some other dozens of (very cheap!)
components were replaced..

Now Transporter sounds identical to top-of-the-line EMM Labs player
(costing 30K$). I listened to both for about 5 hours on different
content.

No way I will replace my transporter anytime soon..

But surely, I can help to improve its firmware

Yes but that's just audiophile paranoia :-)
You can easily take the volume down to (say) 80 without being able to
detect any impact on audio quality.

I do not believe this, as I saw recent posts by Sean Adams, CPU could be
lowered by lower compression ratios of FLAC, or just using WAV files.

Also, the code might be optimized.

5 years ago 96/24 was quite good, it still good enough for today, but
to be competitive, this piece shall support up to 96/24.

That bug with pseudo over-voltage is annoying me, and lack of native

thanks - will try the Rothwells for a start.

I can't thank you guys enough - I have moved closer to hifi nirvana in

Now - for the final tweak I really need to master the Tact. I've been
using the beta PC software for the last year (using the "quick set up"
feature) and I've found it pretty good. As far as I can see, no major
steps are missed. The only point I've seen on other forums is to make
the the filter peaks at 0db - yet I can only find a tool to shift the
target curve up or down (or am I being dump, and this will achieve the
same thing).

Also - if I'm placing the microphone for different listening positions
closer or further away from the speaker, does the software adjust the
mic gain accordingly?

Are there any good online guides (other than the Tact site) or forum
threads to get the most out of the Tact RCS?

As I said - so far, what I've learnt from you all has been invaluable
(even the wife can hear the difference) - I'm just looking to make sure

By the way, as a small contribution to your thoughts, can I suggest you
give the PS Audio Power Plant Regenerator a go? I've tried various

Thats good to know. I got a duet remote and I think I saw a program for
programming it's IR LED.
What would be really cool is if I could use the big knob on the
transporter for input selection. Say turning the knob while pressed
selects input source. Or a single keypress of any other key toggles the
input sources. The easier the better.

Someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the SACD
spec require that you cannot get a digital output from the SACD layer?
Presumably that means that when you play an SACD disc, the data stream
on the SPDIF output is from the redbook layer.

Yes that will be fine!
Set the speaker amp gain to the loudest you ever want to listen with
the tp on max, then use the TP vol

I'm drifting a bit away from my main question, but if I understand this
right I only need an attenuator when I don't want to use the volume
control too much so I don't lose resolution?
I got active speakers where I also can set the gain/attenuation so I
probably don't need an Endler.

The attenuators are inline with the unbalanced outputs. If using
balanced you will need some Endlers or similar.

Yes - 10dB is perfectly adequate. Apparently Endler make some very high
quality (expensive) balanced attenuators. I Used to use Rothwells
(unbalanced) - also perfectly fine - but for what is essentially 2
resistors in a plug... a bit expensive :-).

In all seriousness, there is very little point in paying premium price
for attenuators. At line level, a pair of resistors is going to do
nothing to compromise your sound quality.

Think of the attenuators as a fuse or as insurance - there for your
protection, and much cheaper than an amp or speaker repair/replacement.

I also plan to use the balanced outputs. I think I read somewhere that
there are already attenuators on the board. But you need to open the
case of the transporter to access the switches (am I right about

The selection of the input sounds easy. Is there a way to make it a
single key press? Like setting a favorite or so?

Yes, SACD is an example. Or if a friend brings along his CD, I don't
want to rip it first before we can listen. Maybe I will still get rid of
the CDP since I don't own many SACD.
Instead of the CD player, I also have a settopbox with digital output
(which finaly would eleminate the ground loop hum) and a Nintendo Wii
(not really audiophile sound ;-))

Phil - Many thanks for this advice. I completely agree that I'm running
a huge risk with this - I just assumed that the Transporter (having been
around for a couple of years now) was stable enough to warrant direct
connection. I used to run a SB3 to Benchmark DAC1 to Simaudio P5 preamp,
bt found the sound SO much better without the pre-amp that I sold it and
injected directly from the DAC1.

I am using the balanced outputs of the TP. Using an inline attenuator
seems a neat way to avoid blow outs, but is a reduction of only 10db
enough?

When I was running the audio out of the tact comfortable listening was
around 71 on the display, now running it out of the TP it's about 81. So
I'm guessing I've still got room even with attenuators to go a little
further if needed? Which attenuator would you recommend - Rothwell, or
better (if makes a difference)?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter as preamp

2010-03-23 Thread Shredder

I ran my TP straight to power w/no pre for 2 years. Because I used
balanced outputs, I needed to use an attenuator (Endler stepped was
excellent) to control the gain. Worked very well, although I eventually
added a really nice pre and it sounded even better.

Anyway, yes, it is easy to switch to the digital inputs. Scroll through
the menu to digital inputs, hit select, scroll through menu to pick
desired input (whichever input to which you have connected your cd
player), and hit select. That's it. Easy as pie.

TP is highly recommended. High WAF for me as it allowed me to get rid
of our thousands of cd cases.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter as preamp

2010-03-23 Thread ntropy

I have read that many are using the Transporter as a preamp and connect
it directly to active speakers or to a power amp.

Now my question: is it possible to easily select different imputs in a
way that I can let's say connect my CD player via optical output to the
transporter and use the built in DAC of the transporter?

Can I change the input with the touch of a button (or a turn of the

This would be really great if possible and a reason for me to buy a TP
:-)

This was already confirmed by Sean Adams in other thread as a bug.
I have power conditioner that displays voltage on its LCD, it is very
stable, between 229 and 231V.
There are two issues

a) Transporter voltage measures are not precise: it may report 236V
while the real voltage is 230V

b) The message ALWAYS happens when I change the tracks, and usually
when I change the tracks with very high bitrate, such as 192/24

I think it never changed with CD-quality, 44.1/16 tracks

Not quite. What Callesroe is saying is that IF for any reason the TP
"forgets" its digital loop setting, it will go direct from the TP volume
(@ 100%) to the TP DAC, missing out the loop (with the TACT and its
volume control in). Now the TP is playing @ 100% into whatever is
connected to the TP dac output...

By the way, this is NOT an approved setup. If you are playing any
digital device, you MUST have some form of digital or analogue volume
control or attenuators between the output of the digital device/dac and
your power amplification. Otherwise any bug or unexpected behaviour
could cause your system to play at full volume which could blow your
speakers and/or amp.

Are you using balanced or unbalanced from TP to the W5?
If unbalanced, set the internal attenuators in the TP, if balanced you
will need to source some inline attenuators.

Not sure I understand - I don't seem to have that problem. I always
leave the transporter out at 100 and use the tact to control the volume
that's fed back into the transporter.

For what you suggest to happen the transporter would have to control
the volume digital output of the tact.

My setup is:
TP digital out to Tact Mini digital input (terminal 1)
Tact mini balanced output to TP digital in

TP analogue out to Simaudio W5 amp

Sounds awesome.

Correction: It turns out the people that use the 2 step process were
referring to a specific program, Wave Editor, that they use for
