Hi Sean, All three of my SB3s have the same PS, they don't say Logitech on them so they must be the Unifives. I was not aware there was a better one shipping with some SB3s. The one with the Touch is WAY better. Yes I agree, on the SB3 I do measure a tiny amount of noise from the supply inside the box, but thats probably because there is so much coming from the supply in the first place. On the Touch Even that is not there. The Touch has extremely quiet supply rails, especially for a device with a builtin computer. The only issue I've seen is that when supplying current to an external device there is a little bit of 120Hz noise on the supply rails. I'm not sure how this is getting through. The only place it can come from is the supply, but I would expect the regulators to do an excellent job of getting rid of any 120Hz. I have tried very carefully to state that advantages of going with a linear supply are related to less noise getting into other parts of the system. You have an EC AW100DM ? This model has RCA inputs. There should be a PAIR of RCA inputs for each channel, one marked "+" and the other marked "-". For single-ended (unbalanced) equipment like the SB, a shorting plug needs to be present on each "-" input (these should have been supplied with your amp). You then use standard RCA-RCA cables to connect the SB output to the pair of "+" inputs. -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal... I set SB volume to the lowest possible, and I also pause it always when turning on power amp. So there's no signal at all. Still the amp doesn't start. And if I connect it with a passive preamp in between, it starts fine. What could be wrong with SB outputs? The power amp must be definitely making some checks, because it will not start if nothing is connected to the inputs at all. But what could cause it, that with SB it thinks there's nothing connected? BTW. I'm just listening to the setup with this passive amp in between, so basically SB3 with a power amp and I really like the sound. -- azaz44 azaz44's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81664 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 + Power amp problem
I have absolutely no knowledge about the Electrocompaniet amp, but what you describe sounds like some kind of protection circuit is kicking in, and I do have a hypothesis First, the background. You're connecting the SB3's unbalanced output to the EC's XLR input. Probably the SB3's signal is going to pin 3 (or 2), and its ground is going to pin 2 (or 3). Pin 1 on the XLR (the ground on the EC) is probably only connected to the screen of the cable, and the screen isn't connected at the SB3 end. This configuration is fairly typical for driving a balanced input from an unbalanced output, and the difference between pins 2 and 3 is what the balanced input regards as the signal. Now, under normal circumstances, the ground from the unbalanced source will be 0V, because the source component (eg. preamp, CD player, etc) has its ground plane connected to the mains earth. But the SB3 has a floating ground, and (using the stock PSU) there's quite a lot of ripple on its ground plane. This means that what's going to pin 2 (or 3) of the EC's input isn't 0V, but some very small amplitude mains frequency ripple. Because it would be treated as signal and get amplified, it would result in quite loud hum. If you connect the SB3 output direct to a normal balanced amp that accepts whatever it's given, loud hum is preceisely what you'll get. (The reason you don't get this hum when you connect an SB3 to a normal unbalanced amp is because the ground planes of the SB3 and amp are connected, and so the ripple gets shunted to earth via the amp's mains earth connection). Conjecture: Perhaps the EC amp is detecting this unacceptably high level of hum and refusing the power up, in order to protect your speakers/hearing. An experiment to try would be to try connecting the screen end of the RCA-to-XLR cable to the ground at the SB3 end. This will shunt the ripple to earth via the EC's ground (assuming that the EC's ground plane is connected to mains earth). Alternatively, connect a wire between the SB3's ground plane and mains earth (a suitable place to access the SB3's ground plane is the outer ring of its COAX digital output). -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81664 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 + Power amp problem
Hi there I'm a happy owner of SB Classic, older one with Slim Devices logo on it, and was trying to connect it to the power amplifier directly to see how it goes. And found interesting problem here. My power amp is Electrocompaniet AW100DMB, with some connectors which allow to connect RCA cables to its XLR sockets. One second after pressing the power button I can hear some switch inside, and then it works - sound is coming. Or if I don't hear this switch, it doesn't start and there's no sound. And here's what happens with the power amp (EC) - with CD player or any PRE-AMP connected, it starts fine. - if I connect the SB3, it doesn't start. - if I run it unconnected completely, it doesn't start. - if I connect the SB3 to preamplifier, and pre to EC, starts fine. - if I connect the SB3 to a PASSIVE preamp, and then to power amp, it starts fine. (pre is Creek OBH 14 which can serve as a DAC as well, but I'm running it without any power connected to it so it is really passive). - if I connect like above, to a passive preamp, but use it's outputs marked "fixed", which makes it skip the volume control, it runs fine (!). Everytime I start EC, there's no signal coming (SB3 is paused or powered off with the remote). So the question is, why the combo SB3 + EC doesn't run? It's really incredible to me. Could this be some grounding problem in SB3, which the EC detects, or what else? I'm also interested in your experience with connecting SB3 directly to a power amp. -- azaz44 azaz44's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21080 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81664 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I listened to many of the tracks on the Linn Classical Sampler #4 last night. At least initially, I could not reliably discern any differences. Perhaps on further listening, or on a friend's high end system I guess I'll have to turn in my Audiophile membership card. But before I do: I think that these tracks are well recorded (based on listening). They are not dynamically compressed or clipped (based on Audacity inspection). -- R Johnson R Johnson's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=36462 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81634 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

What I use now is Code: # FLAC output starts here flc flc * * # FT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}D:{RESAMPLE=-r %d} [flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [sox] -v0.95 --buffer 32768 -q -t wav - -t flac -C0 -3 -c2 -r96000 - polyphase -cutoff 1.0 flc flc transcode * # FT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}D:{RESAMPLE=-r %d} [flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [sox] -v0.95 --buffer 32768 -q -t wav - -t flac -C0 -3 -c2 -r96000 - polyphase -cutoff 1.0 but polyphase is from older SoX releases, today it is just replaced by 'rate' effect -- michael123 michael123's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23745 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80903 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
