1. Higher damping factor usually means tigther and better impulse
response, or put it another way to low damping factor is flabby and
uncontrolled bass, but this also depends on wich speaker you attempt to
drive.

Ouch
http://www.stereophile.com/content/paradigm-reference-studio100-v3-loudspeaker-measurements

Your speaker have a very complex impedance plot and are down at 2,5 ohm
and complex 3 rd order fillters.

i would try a stable and powerfull amp here brand names ? I'm not good
at that game anymoore but Bryston is always mentioned if one whats
technically well designed amps, wich is the kind of amp such speakers
need.

4.
House sound ? Imho there are some traps comparing stuff in a shop "
exciting " would often be irritating in your face sound in the long
run. The more bland initially uninvoling thing may be the more correct
rendering of the recording , you need to take some amps home and try
for a longer time with your normal way of listening.

Also modern well designed ( no voodoo engineering ) amps should be very
similar to each other if used inside their design parameters, not
clipping etc . Your speaker seems capable of weeding out such amps that
does not perform well :)

There is a myth that powerfull amps sounds " powerfull " and not as
refined as a smaller amp.
It's the oposite, if the amp can drive the speaker at any level you
would get a more relaxed and unstrained sound.
physics wins, no selecting of audiophile components can compensate for
lack of power.

Ofcourse if you are listening at low levels in a small room you migth
not need the most powerfull amps.

Ok, so ABX, is probably what we will do. Tom is the main person to try
to tell A from B... I'm sure there will be others that will want to
join in for the test.

It should be a fun test, and i expect some very positive results on
favor of the Transpoter.

If you are happy with your preamp, it would be a no brainer for me to go
with one of the wyrd4sound amps, or sell your preamp and get their
integrated. W4S has reviewed very well and is very reasonably priced.
They use the ICE chip. Not sure how they stack up to the higher power
T-amps. Personally I would go with some of the "kit" amps out there and
play around with them. Most people are not into all that. I like to
tinker around with a soldering iron.

Bottom line - you can get a fantastic sounding 200+ wpc amp for
hundreds, not thousands if you are willing to tinker a bit.

In my case it's less a question of whether or not I'd be willing than
whether or not I'd be able. It would be completely over my head.

Really, I'm just dreaming about what (if anything) Logitech releases
for its next generation product. It would be nice to have support for
anything we're able to rip from a disc.

I can currently play 5.1 DVD back from my computer into my receiver via
HDMI, but it seems that sometimes it works and sometimes it stutters.
Something as rock-solid as a Squeezebox would be most welcome, partly
for the reliability and partly for the ability to maintain a single
library with both standard and multichannel music.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amps and Adjectives, your insights?

2011-06-23 Thread rgro

I've got a similar front end as you...Touch & Rega DAC. Just this
afternoon, I received an LFD LE IV amplifier. It's a little over your
price range but not by much. I've had it running for just a couple
hours and already I can say that it's magicabsolutely no comparison
to the Marantz I was using. It's woken up my system in a remarkable way
and it's not even burned in, yet. If you can audition one somehow, run
(really, really fast!), don't walk, to give it a try.

Having said that, you've got to be able to live with a minimalist
approach to the "bells and whistles" in return for stunning sound.
There's no remote, and no tone or balance controlsjust a flat-out
gorgeous musical output. They're hand-made in England one at a time by
the designer/engineer. The front panel as an on/off toggle switch, a
lovely feeling volume control, source switching knob, a very small blue
LED, and knob to control tape input/monitoring if one were to so desire.
That's it...

If you're in the US, there is both an East Coast (Fidelis in N.H.) and
West Coast (Gene Rubin Audio) distributor. Give one of them a call and
have a chatI also looked at Primare, NAD, and Luxman but the sheer
musicality of the LFM has me quite dumbstruck at the moment.

You can read some stuff about it in Sterophile and a few other places.
Don't bother to look for specs on it, the company doesn't believe in
that sort of marketing. The manual is one photocopied pageactually
a bit refreshing. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM
me.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0

2011-06-23 Thread JohnSwenson

A router is definitely not required, but there are two requirements:
at least one of the devices has an auto sensing port (common on devices
these days) and both devices are on the same subnet.

The second requirement is usually taken care of by a DHCP server which
assigns IP addresses to both the laptop and the Touch. The DHCP server
is usually in the router, but it doesn't HAVE to be, its certainly
possible to have a DHCP server running on the laptop. Alternatively you
can setup static IP address for both the laptop and the Touch in which
case you don't even need the DHCP server.

Yes the Touch DOES have to connect to the internet at least once for
initial setup, but after that a laptop running SBS and a wire direct to
the Touch is a perfectly viable way to run a minimal setup.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amps and Adjectives, your insights?

2011-06-23 Thread dsdreamer

Hello, I'd appreciate some perspective from forum members on what to
look for in new 2 channel amplification. I guess I am getting
bamboozled by some of the descriptive terms used by reviewers
describing the quality of amplifiers and need some perspective.

Background: solid state amp wanted to replace a Creek 5350SE driving
Paradigm Studio 100v3 floor standers (nasty low impedance at below
200Hz, so high current and output impedance required). Squeezebox Touch
via Rega DAC will be the source. I'd like to spend under $3k in the US,
but could stretch this a bit for the right product.

Questions:

1) I consider the Creek 5350SE to be on the warm side of neutral, but
so is the Rega DAC. Should I try to fix this by going to a more
accurate, detailed and analytic amplifier solution? Or will higher
power (and higher damping factor) get me in that direction be default?

2) I want better L/R channel balance than I am used to with the Alps
motorized volume pot in the passive-pre of the Creek, or at least a
balance control to fix up any offset that might be there. Will it be
worth looking for an amplifier or pre-amp with switched resistor
attenuators for volume control to address this problem? Do I have to go
way up-market to find this?

3) The last time I auditioned integrated amplifiers in a store, I
listened to Naim Nait, Arcam and Creek amplifiers. I found the Arcam
(A90) too polite and didn't engage me musically as much as the Creek or
the Naim. Does this kind of "house sound" still persist today and is it
a valid way to down-select among brands?

4) Any specific model suggestions?

TIA.

For an explanation of ABX test, see 'adamslim's post'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=637567) just a few
posts above (#22). Or wikipedia's entry is decent:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABX_test

If you don't do ABX, then are you going to do several trials,
randomizing which source is A and which source is B, so that if Tom
detects a difference then you can see whether he consistently prefers
one over the other (this is another of adamslim's good suggestions
above)? Or are you sometimes going to not really switch inputs when you
say you're switching, to see if he reports a difference even when it's
the same source?
