It is/was used by Telecom operators in the backbone network where they had different types of traffic which had to be transported over high speed links (e.g. SDH/SONET). The nearest a domestic user will get to ATM is when using ADSL as many ADSL connections terminate in a ATM based DSLAM. As a technology ATM is now out of date and there are other backbone technologies taking over. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89481 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Tomato router - optimisations for Touch?
The Qos is it not meant mostly for the internet conection, i used it when i had ADSL to gEt webradio while downloading torrents, but inside ones own network i hardly see the purpose . With my current 100/10 fiber conection it serves no purpose i run tomato on an old wrt54gl, this router is not fast nor modern ( but very reliable and stable ). So all my ethernet cabled stuff have static ip and are conected by gigabit switches to each other, the router is conected to one switch , so no internal ethernet traffic goes trough the router anyway, I use it,s wifi for one radio and a controller and one iPad -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. I'd like to explore Async routing. Wiki insert: Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a switching technique for telecommunication networks. It uses asynchronous time-division multiplexing,[1][2] and it encodes data into small, fixed-sized cells. This differs from networks such as the Internet or Ethernet LANs that use variable sized packets or frames. ATM provides data link layer services that run over OSI Layer 1 physical links. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Tomato router - optimisations for Touch?
For myself, I wouldn't waste any time trying to optimize a router. Besides my 3 Squeezeboxes, a Duet remote and music server, my mid-level Belkin G router supports 2 other PCs, my laptop, my daughter's laptop and iPad and a Roku. I've never had a song interruption due to traffic volume on the network. Some years ago, I used a SB3 with a "B" wireless router with no issues. Sometimes we can put a lot of effort into solving problems that really aren't there. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89481 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Tomato router - optimisations for Touch?
The goal is to give the Touch the maximum QoS priority, in order to achieve a possible, potential, theoretical improvement in sound? I don't know Tomato specifically, but you should probably give the Touch's MAC or IP address max (express/premium) priority. If that can't be done, give port 3483 and port 9000 max priority. If that can't be done either, see if you can give priorities to "service types" like MP3, FLAC, etc. That being said, *QoS is just another memory and CPU-consuming service* to run on the router. If your bandwidth isn't already clogged, and your router isn't super-fast, turning QoS off might actually give you the best performance. Especially prioritizing packets per "service type" will be heavy, as the router will have to look into (analyze) every single packet to determine what type it is, AFAIU. So if you haven't yet maxed out your wireless bandwidth (which is unlikely), you should probably leave QoS turned off in any case. -- Soulkeeper -that is not dead which can eternal lie. and with strange aeons even death may die.- touch (sans caps) + duet + boom + radio (portable) / dd-wrt on linksys wrt160n / sbs 7.6 on w7(x86) with avira free Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89481 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
