Just a wild guess but maybe the jive_alsa process hasn't spawned yet
when the rcS script fires?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Forget 24/192 how about 24/384?

2011-08-19 Thread agillis

I though all you guys would get a kick out of this. We have been testing
VortexBox player running on a Sonore VortexBox with 24/384 music using a
MSB Signature DAC, which supports 24/384 via USB. It seems to be working
well.

http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/First-Report-Sonore-Server-24384-Playback

We have been using the direct interface to VortexBox Player not using
it in SqueezeBox emulation mode. I have already modified the SqueezeBox
Server that comes with VortexBox to support 24/192. I guess I could also
get it to support 24/384. Not sure if anybody is really interested in
this though.

How much music is really available in 24/384?

BTW, I checked both with SPDIF out to my Anthem-pre directly and also
with DACMagic in between, both exhibit similar behavior.

That's why I answered as I did. I'm using a ESS Sabre ES9018
incarnation which is phenomenal in jitter rejection.

I can't feed my DAC with light - only voltage and current ;-)

After several day of listening at jive_alsa 55/spdif 51 (John Swenson's
numbers), I've got to come down squarely in his camp. I've not
experienced any degredation in the mid or low bass---in fact the
opposite. Everything is enhanced and, in particular, there is now an
enveloping quality to the soundstage that's pretty remarkable---as if
somebody crept in and tweaked my speaker placement. Instrument and
voice locations are significantly more clearly visualized and I've
found that extra 5% in the musical detailhearing keys on a bassoon
being depressed/released in Mahler's 9th, breath
inhalation/exhalations, the little swish of a conductors arm against
body, etc.that have charmed the hell out of me and made a number of
pieces that much richer. Lowering the spdif numbers, for me, actually
muddies things up.

But, hey, one man's detail is another man's "too bright" I suppose and,
as always, YMMVeverybody's systems have their own personalities!

In my experience, Touch did not need any burn-in. But it does tend to
sound a bit analytical and etched-out straight out of the box. You'd
have to tweak it a bit in order to turn it into a truly amazing high
end source. Here's my recommendations:

1. Get an outboard DAC
2. Apply Soundcheck's tt20 mods (you can find his thread and his blog
in this forum). Best to apply all the mods, including screen off,
analog and USB outs off, and wi fi off.
3. Apply dynaudiorules mods (also found on this forum)
4. Play with spdif priorities (ranging from 41 to 59, I think), until
you hit the 'sweet spot' that sounds musical on your system

Once you accomplish all these steps, your stereo will suddenly start
sounding like a five figure high-end system. Of course, a lot of will
depend on the quality of your outboard DAC, but you can get pretty
amazing results for a meagre investment of $300 (Beresford Caiman is a
good deal).

Enjoy!

YES...

If these DAC's demonstrate the phenomena of their sound changing
according to these mods, I'm pretty sure I know what is causing it. If
owners of these DAC's do hear differences, I'd like them to try with

Setting jive_alsa to 55 enhances the entire sound stage, in my system it
is a welcome change. Increasing SPDIF priority is what changes the
equation of the music. It enhances certain high frequencies, thereby
creating a sense of spaciality and darker background. But as you listen
it is fatiguing and more analytical. I feel the sense of music is lost
while the sense of instruments is more.
I set SPDIF to 41, hence not losing the bass and also giving it a
higher priority than the other processes at 40. I till now did not hear
any difference in setting the SPDIF priority to 40 or 41, but think
there will be some thing good which I do not hear.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] EQ for Linux/Vortexbox?

Looking to do EQ (NOT DRC) with a Touch system with SBS on a Vortexbox

Have read that BruteFIR can do the trick, but that it won't work with

Or can Inguz be installed on Linux/Vortexbox? I'm reading conflicting

Thanks for your help.

Not only the quantity but the quality also. Changing the jive_asla to 55
i.e. higher than the SPDIF, seems to bring the balance back but I found
it just sounds wrong in my system so I've changed it back and dropped
to 44.

Do you find that 41 makes enough difference to be worthwhile over the
default? I am finding considerable reduction in graininess since making
these settings though.
