Oh yea, all these discussions turns very academic no one considers
actual recordings and thier built in limits , like HDcrap that sell old
analog masters that are well inside the scope of 16/44.1 or 16/48 and
can be fully represented by that, they may very well be in a dire need
for good remaster, but thats not how they are sold .

A case could be made that you for some reasons needs more than 16/44.1
/48 .

But there is no for example 20/55 format in use next "standard" formats
seems to be 24/88.2 /96 ok so we use that.

It also have healty slush margins for human errors, you may argue that
no profesional sound enginer would do any gross error.
But i feel that era of the profesional sound engineer is gone ( for
other reasons another topic ).
And historically how many recordings don't have some kind of mistake in
them. it migth be if you do everything "perfect" 16/44.1 would do it,
but not many things are excetud perfectly.

2011-09-04 Thread Mnyb

yes evil digital :)

I'ts adorable when everyone is talking about impulse response and
transients.
Well yes maybe ?

then bring out the microphones with a freq response 0 - 192khz .
Bandwith limitations gives the same effects be it digital or analog .

i do get that a high sample rate AD and helps you avoid filter problems
etc. And keep that fs in the production yep why not.

but if the microphones et al during recording is dead above lets say
30kHz to be generous a consumer format with fs >60kHz will tell the
whole story more samples would simply be reduntant and not carry any
further information of the recorded event.

DAC's that works at high fs , well thats not bad a high fs helps them
to perform better depending on desig many have internally 128 times
oversampling etc .
good old oversampling is they key here, no need to have it done at the
record company and caried on your file or disc ?

24/88.2 and 24/96 is all that we ever need for a consumer format more
than 2ch would be nice too imho,
Then disc space is better spent as more channels than redundant
samples, now where talking more music information again.
I would be really happy if recordings used the sq potential in good old
16/44.1 which they don't in most cases.

Once again I agree. Layla is being sold by HDTracks as the definitive
audiophile version but the master that was used to create the high
resolution has the same overly compressed dynamic range as the crappy
2011 CD remaster. I've had this same conversation over on the
Stereophile forum and since HDTracks is a Stereophile advertiser all
the writers and editors simply gave HDTracks a pass and said something
along the lines of "Oh they're aware of the problems and it's now their
fault and yada, yada, yada."

That's why I will not buy anything from HDtracks until each and every
one of their high resolution releases is truly hi-rez and is not
dynamically compressed. Or as you put it, is no longer crap.

Not quite crap just pretend high resolution, as in standard CD
resolution up-sampled to a higher resolution. Just how many frequency
spectrum graphs is it going to take for people to get the message. A
message along the lines of for every true resolution recording being
sold by HDTracks there are at least two pretend high resolution
recordings being sold by HDTracks.

Here's a frequency spectrum graph taken from one of the songs on a very
recent HDTracks offering: The Rolling Stones - 60's UK EP Collection

The BS write up about just the high resolution tracks are generated
(taken from the HDTracks site):

"For the analog to digital transfers, vintage reel-to-reel tape
machines were utilized - a modified Ampex 351 with original tube
electronics (full track mono and two track stereo) and an Ampex ATR-102
modified with Aria Discrete Class-A Electronics (full track mono and two
track stereo). A Sonoma DSD digital audio workstation was the chosen
high resolution format and Meitner Design ADC8 and DAC8 MKlV converters
were used for the conversion process. Cables used were the cryogenically
frozen type supplied to us by Gus Skinas of Super Audio Center. Gus also
provided much guidance to Jody Klein, Steve Rosenthal and myself for our
first time use of DSD technology. For this HD Tracks release, the Bob
Ludwig mastered DSD files were converted to both 176.4kHz and 88.2kHz
high resolution PCM with Weiss Saracon conversion software"

Pray tell, why does the graph below show almost nothing in the
frequencies above 22kHz, which just so happens is exactly what the
graph would like if it was made from standard resolution CD?

Graph:

I use puddletag to automagically append [24/96], [24/48] etc. to album
names for albums other than 16/44.1.

I don't bother browsing for them though, I choose my music based on
what I want to listen to rather than resolution. If I really want to
find just high res stuff I just search for '[24/' or something else
that reflects the resolution I'm after.

If you're getting stuff from HDTracks the process is a lot simpler -
just file under crap!

Yes, the developers all use linux. If you are happy with Inguz then
there is little reason to switch. If not, then brutefirdrc is maybe a
little easier to install and set up. And you can always convert Inguz
filters to brutefir.

(Setup with the Touch is not so easy in the current released version -
a new version will be released as soon we have some bad weather and I
have a reason to be indoors.)

Harry G;655314 Wrote:

By default brutefirdrc uses 64k, which I think is the same as Inguz,
and is more than generous for a room correction filter. A quick google
couldnt tell me how many taps Inguz supports, but brutefir (the
convolution engine used by the brutefirdrc plugin) is regularly used
with 300k taps in other applications. How many taps do you want.

The best place for brutefirdrc questions is the google groups at
