Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0
IF one breaks a leg or something reading this from post 1 can be fun. "my ears tells me" is exactly the kind of flawed thinking that get you green pens for your cd and sprays to treat your exotic cables :) your so called " ears " tells you a lot of things ( expectational bias ). Another dear forum members proves that piont in post 481 in this tread, if that experience is not all " in his head " .. Some even resort to elaborate fantasies about why controlled test is " flawed " ( flat earth arguments ), but not sigthed tests. Or the nice circular arguments that other audiophools can hear it then it must be ( yea ask the other cult members ). A positive note, this is free no one is fleeced of any money . It may be damaging for the product image, "with such friends you need no enemies" Some casual readers migth be lead to believe that you actually *must* do these things to enjouy the product. This is evident in many other posts people seeking a ll kinds of advice to do things that are not really necessary and a bit above thier capabilities . any many of the nice aspects of the products dissapears if you strip away the UI and mess up the file types conversion. Relax and enjoy the music, no obssess over bizarre details. Wasting time that could be used to enjoy music. It is also a cultural flaw , it is considered ok to be totally ignorant about science or even to scorn science. It's not ok to be ignorant about culture and history people would just stare at you if confessed that you don't know that London is the capital of great britain or who is " martin luther king". But being totally ignorant about science or technollogy is, some even brag about it ! No wonder that people buy all kinds of pseudscience technobabble if it strokes them in the rigth way. i have yet again injected myself in this tread and wasted time . But I think pseudoscience and superstition and alternative medicine is a real problem. For perspective http://osxdaily.com/2011/10/20/steve-jobs-refused-early-cancer-treatment-regretted-alternative-therapy/ this higligths another aspect of all this, " Magical Thinking" . -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Hello, Could you confirm that setting the file types as you defined it, PCM instead of native, prevents the possibility of playing 24/96 files? At least for me this is what happens. When set to PCM 24/96 files play slowed down and distorted. They play ok when set to native. If you confirm the problem then do you have a workaround (apart from setting an esoteric file type to native and converting all my 24/96 FLAC files to that other file type). I would never go back to transports. Transports make a difference but I dont think they are worth the money the audiophile companies ask for them. So called linear supplies also disturbs the feeding net by a great deal their input current is very distorted . If had the brains to design a supply I would design a supply that draw sinusoidal current from the net with a power-factor close to 1 this can be done with switch-mode and LCL filters (I work with such devices but they are in the MW range ) Lore ? I think everything never than the direct heated triode is considered bad ;) . Just to play the contrarian for a moment, is there a particular reason you want a linear power supply? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0
Those of you who understand the logic behind my approach, easily understand that different HDDs ( internally or externally powered), an USB cable, RAM, MOB, PS, etc.,etc, will also make a difference on a PC based transport. Our embedded Touch is a pretty much stripped down PC. Which is a pretty good starting point. But again. If the DACs would be able to cope better with common-mode noise, timeing variations and drifts asf. we wouldn't have that IMO annyoing and never ending discussion. I'd be really annoyed if I'd just bought a DAC at 2000+ and it still responds to improvements on the transport side. There are many manfacturers out there claiming immunity to the transprot. You should ask yourself then why they all still run Amarra on presentations. I guess on RMAF there was not any presentation not running a so called "audiphile" playback software. If u measure at the output of the DAC and the outputs are identical the case is closed. This whole treads exist solely because the deliberate choice of *not* using scientific methods in a matter thats is possible to apply scientific methods on. Hence discussions on which OS sound best feeding a squeezebox ? This is alchemy. the idea the reasonably well engineered sources feeding reasonably well designed DAC's sound different is in itself very questionable, the base assumption that this is the case is very likely wrong . but still I gain insigth and knowledge about the innards of the squeezebox from this tread I don't use the toolbox I've manually turned of some unecessary things, the player is more snappy and reacts faster to user inputs if you offload some task you don't want. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. And hifi critic has published reports that hard drives sound different. One could perhaps be forgiven for thinking there were two John atkinsons if one reads his measurement reviews on the one hand and the subjective stuff on the other. Some time ago he wrote a piece on what disc spinners measurd well enough for 16 bit or hi res playback. He said at the time it would be followed by one on transports and one on dacs. I don't think these follow ups have appeared. I wonder whether this I'd because his measurements would have shown that pretty much and transport would do into any number of cheap dacs. Equally I have never seen any measurements of smarts I appreciate the argument about the possibility that one measures the wrong things -- adamdea adamdea's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37603 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

1. Atkinson and many other PROs are using Amarra, Pure Music or similar under OSX. Those tools follow a similar stategy then I do. Cics with Cplay/CMP2. tries to push it from the XP side btw. and also addresses the HW. On a platform like OSX or MSW you can't push it to the limits though. An embedded rt-linux system without fancy features like UIs is the close to perfect base. All those audiophile and highpriced players do cause an audible change on 99.99 % of all DACs. If the DAC manfactureres would do a better job, we wouldn't have this discussion. Cheers P.S. I've been in contact with John A. and Kal Rubinson from Stereophile btw. -- soundcheck ::: ' Touch Toolbox 3.0 and more' (http://soundcheck-audio.blogspot.com) ::: by soundcheck soundcheck's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34383 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
