Sure there are various websites where lossless music can be legally purchased, such as HDTracks, Bandcamp and sites run by various artists and record labels, but I believe that the total of all the lossless downloads from all these sites is a mere fraction of the total of lossy downloads sold through iTunes. That is why nothing will really change until iTunes begins to offer lossless downloads. Like it or not, iTunes controls the music download market and can therefore dictate what type of music is offered. ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95541 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Thank you for the information. Is there a simple SP strip that is made out of very high quality materials? Three reasons that I can think of: 1) The record companies are afraid that making lossless files available will somehow increase piracy even though CDs can be easily ripped into lossless files and made available for illegal download through all the usual methods. 2) The great and all powerful iTunes store does not offer lossless downloads so why should a powerless record company take it upon themselves to offer lossless downloads and possibly anger the iTunes gods. 3) They are simply morons. If I had to vote I'd go with number 3 although number 2 is the more likely reason. ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95541 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

So what are the reasons why record companies usually won't make lossless downloads available alongside the lossy? They must have their reasons - anyone know? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Surge protector question
Monster brand anything is generally considered over hyped & over priced. Certainly with their cables one can buy equal (if not better) build quality cables elsewhere at a fraction of the price, sometimes 1/20th the price. I can only assume the same is true with their surge suppressors, though I have no experience with them myself. toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95953 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Surge protector question
After several recommendations from several electricians I adopted the "two tier" approach to surge protection as is outlined in this article: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/article/0,,387874,00.html 1. Whole House Surge Suppression: at the main electric panel (usually $60 to $200 installed depending on which model & type used) 1(a) including a proper 8 foot grounding spike grounding the electric panel itself (you'ld be surprised how many homes have inadequate panel grounding) 2. Device Surge Suppression: basically what is being discussed here, power strips with surge suppression at the location of the electric appliances The basic idea being that the (properly grounded) panel unit takes the major hits allowing the power strip units to do their job better and last longer. Using one or the other is better than nothing. Using both is recommended and offers an extra layer of protection. toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95953 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
