Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Stax "Earspeakers"
Annie - apologies if my reply seemed overly defensive - it is just having used Stax for so long I use them as my reference for what is the correct sound (right or wrong!!). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How good is the DAC in the Squeezebox 3?

Hi - I initially used my SB3 straight into the my power amp and thought the sound was good (for the price extremely good). After a month or two I used my DPA dac which was an improvement (although now of course I had to insert a preamp), I then also tried the Oritek Modded Zhaolu which I preferred - it was an improvement but not a quantum leap. That came a few days ago when I built the Peter Daniels NOS DAC - as I have posted in DIYAudio this is the first time ANY digital source has begun to sound like my analogue. Happy - I should say so - it seems that my digital source is now settled - back to fiddling with the analogue! -- AlanE AlanE's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9251 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35642 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Stax "Earspeakers"
Hi - I have had Stax headphones for at least 20 years, in this time I have had New SR3s, SRX, Lambda Pros and Signatures. Powering these have been SRDx, SRM1 Mk2 & SRM-T1s. I have kept the latter two of headphones / Drivers the others going to friends. If I ever want to really listen to the music it is to these headphones I always return to - I have never heard a pair of Stax being bright, they are always just a beautiful sound. I also have Sennheiser HD 650s / 280s Beyer DT880s and some Jecklin Floats (I do seem to collect a lot of these things) - why? - I use them in different systems - I cannot be bothered to move the Stax around (too lazy?). Out of these non-electrostatics I would have to say the the Beyers are probably the best sounding - certainly the most comfortable. The oddest are of course the Jecklin Floats (if you are not familiar with them then imagine the Cybermen from Doctor Who - that is what you look like wearing these headphones - but again a good sound). I have not tried the 2050s - I think I probably have enough now - OH - I forgot about the Etymotics - really useful on the move keeping the world well out of the way. -- AlanE AlanE's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9251 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36055 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Very interesting article on power leads
Many years ago a chap called Colin Wonfor (IncaTech as was) started selling gold plated mains plugs to be used for hifi. The results were always consistent on audio products (especially CD players) but one of the most interesting things he demonstrated was using a kettle. The plug without gold-plating would run hot - i.e. showing a power loss, whilst the gold-plated plug ran cool i.e. power was not being wasted in the plug. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Irritating "whistle" on right channel from SB3
I do not know whether this is of any use but I had both a hum (probably 50Hz or derivative) on both channels and a high level whistle on the right channel - these were constant level. I was using the SB3 directly from its analogue outputs into my electronic x-overs / amplifiers into my Linkwitz Orions. The solution (for me) was to change from the walwart to a Power One linear psu - since then no noises - even when listening through my Stax Lambda-Pro/SRM-1 setup. I know the issue of psu's has been contentious and I can only add that this worked for me in removing the noise in my system - no comments on better/worse sound. -- AlanE AlanE's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9251 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32155 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
