I too am using an Elpac (although not modded) but again, I can't say if there's really a difference or not. The Panny is incredible, and I definitely have no complaints. The sound is remarkably clean, and the all-digital chain is very appealing from a perceived purity point of view. Well yeah if the track was mastered with clipping in it, gaining it down wouldn't do anything. However what is the differential in power between a "quiet" track and a "loud" track played at the same perceived SPL with respect to the amplifier? -- CFP Squeezebox 3 digital out > Panasonic SA-XR57 > Energy Veritas 2.4i CFP's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6915 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32131 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Replay-gain and Amp clipping Question
Yes but turning down the digital level one must turn up the analog (most amplifiers) level to get the same perceived SPL. If I had a track that was really, really quiet and needed turn my amplifier's volume to 11 in order to get decent SPL, what effect - if any - does this have on the amplifier going into clip-mode? -- CFP Squeezebox 3 digital out > Panasonic SA-XR57 > Energy Veritas 2.4i CFP's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6915 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32131 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Replay-gain and Amp clipping Question
Here's a rather newbie question that I've been thinking about for a bit. Which of these is theoretically worse for the speakers and/or more likely to lead to amp clipping: A) Untouched "modern" rock/pop track with digital clipping being played back at 90dB average. The amplifier's volume is set to -25dB to achieve this SPL. B) The same rock/pop track but replay-gained down 10dB to avoid digital clipping. Now to get the same 90dB SPL as Scenario A, the amplifier's volume has to be at say, -10dB. Basically the question is does replay-gain (or any other form of turning digital level down) increase the likelihood of analog clipping? Thanks for any input. -- CFP Squeezebox 3 digital out > Panasonic SA-XR57 > Energy Veritas 2.4i CFP's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6915 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32131 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Alright I got my third (and best) measurement in today. I haven't gotten a nice, long listening session in yet, but suffice it to say the difference is palpable. Nice backpedal. Of course "situations cannot be fully equivalent" - but that's a meaningless statement it is tantamount to saying, "they are not the same because they are different." Wow, such a philosophical breakthough! Do I smell a Nobel Prize? Well duh, of course the situations are not full equivalent. On the most shallow level, one is named "FLAC" and the other "WAV" so right off you've violated mathematical laws of equivalence! I raised skepticism on the contention WAV sounds better than FLAC for the SB3. Your "short answer": > FLAC needs more processing in the SB, so no-one can claim the situations > are fully equivalent Well this is "processing difference" is by no means unique to the SB3, FLAC is after all a compressed format. On any scientific site if someone contended WAV sounded better than FLAC on their computer due to the "processing differences" he/she'd be laughed out of the house. I don't know if you're aware but FLAC is one of the only lossless formats to have a myriad of test suites designed to PROVE output equivalence to the original signal.
