Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] STAX and Squeezebox
I dont have a Touch, I use a WOO Audio GES as the amplifier and a naim DAC fed by a mac mini. I use the Lyngdorf DPA-1, after comparisons with the tact I thought it was a superior component, anyway they share the same origins, but the "Room Perfect" plus the magnificent D/A conversion simply sold it. I second superQ in his recommendation of Paradigm, and NHT(out of business). I feel that Klipsch speakers are good on the higher price range, their lower models have a somehow narrow dynamic range. I am using the transporter with the AES/EBU digital out to a Lyngdorf DPA-1, and I can say that the improvement was immediately audible, specially in the resolution, presence and transparency of the mid-high and high frequencies. I always felt that the transporter DAC was a bit boring and veiled in those freqs, like it lacked air around it. Sure, the Beyerdynamic DT770 600ohm is only available through their website: http://shop.beyerdynamic.de/hifi/manufaktur/dt-770-manufaktur.html They are part of a program they call "Manufaktur" where they take custom orders. Normally (not always), high impedance headphones have minimal moving mass and therefore distortion is more controlled and detail/soundstage/air is accentuated, but due to this, they require high voltage amps (tubes are better for this, obviously not always). On the other end, low impedance headphones require more current (amperage) and normally operate better with solid state amps, again this is a generalization, as always things are a bit more complex. There is no rule for best sounding, good headphones bring their thing on both spectrums... also good amps drive well both sides, for example, my tube and solid state amps drive both headphones very well. hope it helps. -- GuyDebord '*LAST.FM*' (http://www.last.fm/user/bloodyrosa) - SPEAKERS: Kharma CRM 3.2FE -> v/d Hul Inspiration - PRE: Lyngdorf DPA-1 -> Kharma Grand Reference XLR's -> AMP: Halcro MC20 - ANALOGUE: Clearaudio Ambient CMB, Satisfy Carbon & Lyra Helikon SL, ASR Basis Exclusive phono pre -> Acoustic Zen Silver Reference II XLRs - DIGITAL: Slim Devices Transporter -> Siltech Golden Ridge AES/EBU - AC: PS Audio Power Plant Premier, PS Audio Statement(PPP), ASR Magic Cord(ASR), Siltech SPX30 MKII's for the Lyngdorf, Halcro & Transporter GuyDebord's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14587 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63677 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Which headphones?
Well, In the office setup, where I do all my headphone listening, I have 2 headphone sets that I use with a SB connected to a Benchmark dac1 amplified by a graham slee solo or a custom van Waarde OTL tube amp: The AKG 701's and a Beyerdynamic Manufaktur DT770 600ohm. I prefer both of this to the Senheiser's 600-650 and the Grado's 325, RS-1 which I used to own. Grado's low impedance makes them very tricky to drive well and I found the Senheiser's also very picky and lacking of spatial depth, boomy, inaccurate and colored. I settled on the AKG's because of all the headphones I have tried (except the stax 4040mkII and the 007 Omegas, that I might get some day) they are the most natural sounding, transparent and the sense of space is magnificent. The DT770 600ohm are without question the best closed back headphones I have heard, and the list includes the expensive denon's and audio tecnica's. They require a good headphone amp, my van Waarde suits them perfect. I still prefer the 701's but they leak a lot of sound and when there is people around me Im sure its annoying so I use the dt770's. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Can you hear the difference?
Since I got the Lyngdorf DPA-1 I listen everyday from the transporter (16/48 alacs) and from my vinyl source which gets converted to a digital 24/192 signal, and boy is there a difference! Even my 5 year old kid detects it and Im not kidding... Last friday I was doing comparisons, before the DPA-1, I knew that almost any record played on my vinyl system would sound better, an easy referral for all would be Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" special gold remaster edition vs the 180gr vinyl no special edition, vinyl makes the gold remaster sound like a 128mp3. My surprise came when I experienced the ADC 24/192 conversion, the digital version kept every subtlety and nuance of the vinyl, resolution and soundstage was rendered equal, as a matter fact, I am still surprised and cannot help to positively speculate on the future capacities of High-res digital audio formats! So to my ears, the quality of 24/192 playback is way beyond 16/48. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Burn in time?
As a 91% skeptic, I agree with Themis that almost ALL highly regarded manufactures claim some kind of in-factory burning process, not to say the "critics" in the industry, which in most reviews mention the B word. Companies that produce in my opinion some of the best equipment available, such as Halcro ( http://www.halcro.com/factory.asp ), Acoustic Zen, Siltech, Kharma... I mention this manufacturers because I know their equipment quite well, but of course there are many many more. Does this mean that one should believe them, well im not sure, but when I visited Kharma's facility here in the Netherlands, all I can tell you is that they invest a lot of money (speakers and electronics alike) in taking care of the B process... same as Siltech... something must be true... or would you argue it is a marketing scheme? I would argue that the mini-basis was the first preamp that introduced me to true hi-fi analogue, which of course sounded much better than the transporter. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Lyngdorf: Digital Analogue / Analogue Digital
First and foremost greetings to all. After a long break Im posting several questions that Im sure will be an insightful topic of discussion... In several instances, I have expressed in this forum my love and preference for analogue (vinyl) musical reproduction, however, during my holidays I had the chance to listen to the magic of Lyngdorf's 'room perfect' and now I am tempted to test the digitalization of my analogue system. Next week I will have Lyngdorf's preamp DPA-1 in my system, I will demo it for about a week and then, of course I will take what might the radical decision of acquiring it. The curiosity has driven me to look for every information I could find in the net about the unit, but for some reason, none of my most important questions were addressed... I assume this questions can be applied to any digital amp or preamp in the market... 1. About the A/D conversion, are we talking 24bit-96mhz, 24-192, or...? does this mean that all my analogue content will be digitalized in high-resolution and if yes, how would this high-res will be played back? which brings me to the following question... 2. About the D/A conversion, what type of converters are we talking about? do they upsample? do they use the same resolution of the original input? how well implemented are the D/A converters 3. Would you use the Balanced Analogue out from the Transporter? or would you rather use a digital out? and why? and this question of-course refers back to the first one. 3.1 Hypothetically, if I use the digital out of the transporter to play a regular flac, all info will be kept 16bit, but if I use the analogue out, the lyngdorf will upsample the info and make it 24bit high-res, I assume some info will be lost in that process, but I leave it to you guys to help me understand what goes on Before this, for me digital was digital and analogue was analogue, two different worlds, now I am forced to think in a hybrid, I guess thats why I am a bit confused... Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Rules
I am a Marxist that loves music, hates repression and confronts stupidity. Must I be a fraction of myself in this forum? The world outside is collapsing in front of our eyes (Obama cant undo the damage done) and you are supporting a ban on people that use words like "idiot" in an audiophile forum!!!... It doesnt surprise me that the many of you live under the oppression of the "patriot act", and even probably some support it. I participate in this forum because it relaxes me and helps me relieve stress, I never take it to seriously, although I have fun sometimes pretending I do. People have responded to me with personal comments and who cares, nothing has happened, besides that. However, there have been some pathetic members that really get offended in an audiophile forum!!! I remember a guy nicknamed Alekz that complained because I posted in his thread an Image of an Alien holding an esoteric ethernet cable in one hand, and a bag of sugar in the other, very soon the "Web monkey" (as he refers to himself), had the thread locked! All because a guy got offended or scared by what might have been for him dangerous terrorist threats hidden in a 2 minute photoshop... seriously, what needs to be censored is the censor himself! A public forum belongs to the public, right? no! This one belongs to slimdevices, and thats probably my mistake. It clearly belongs to the Web monkey, as he makes the absurd rules of censorship by listening to the cry of ineffectual offended members that take so super seriously the discussions. You should be mediating instead of censoring! thats what happens in public open forums! Please, everyone should be demanding this, we are the ones that make this forum, instead of letting yourself be subverted. I say it again: Web monkey, or should I say censor, MEDIATION INSTEAD OF CENSORSHIP, if what you want is to have some control... -- GuyDebord Kharma Ceramique 3.2FE's wired with v/d Hul Inspiration. I'd trust what most sound engineers believe, > or most consumers, or most researchers in acoustics - and that's that > digital is far superior to vinyl as a format. Most sound engineers? Almost all would argue that digital is far more convenient, practical and economical, but in regards to sound, I really disagree with your comment, in fact, I think is a fabrication of your "know it all attitude". In recording, vinyl has a cult status, and its seen as superior format of music reproduction. However, very few can achieve superior reproduction of vinyl, since a lot of care and patience is needed for this. Very different from handling cd's, pressing an open button and dropping it in the tray Red Book compact discs have this advantage, and when you balance it, the sound of cd's is not that bad. Besides, recording studios have hundreds of thousand, if not, million euros invested in digital equipment. Since the early 80's almost everyone trusted digital blindly. Its a matter of market (capitalism) over format, economy over format, convenience over format, but for shure not music over format. Most consumers? Any regular consumer would buy what sells in your average consumer electronics store. The consumer's will is limited by decisions taken at Sony, Philips or Samsung. In the early 80's the reality was simple: CD's cost much less to manufacture! therefore they are faster to produce, easier to distribute and had the novelty to be able to attract consumers into the "future", plus they sounded OK, for sure better than cassettes, and almost as DAT's, not to mention the manufacturing of the players. For a regular consumer it was simple. Most of them never heard vinyl reproduced in a high quality system; Cd's were marketed fiercely and vinyl vanished, it was just to delicate, difficult and complicated. Researchers in acoustics? There we go again... THIS IS NOT ABOUT PSEUDO SCIENCE OR SCIENCE, MEASURABLE ACCURACIES, AND CONTROLLED LAB EXPERIMENTS, ULTIMATELY, IT IS ABOUT THE REPRODUCTION OF MUSICAL EMOTION, FEELINGS, WONDER, ITS ABOUT MUSIC!! AND THIS AREA IS WHERE GOOD QUALITY VINYL PLAYBACK IS STILL THE KING AND WHERE AUDIOPHILES KNOW MUCH BETTER THAN YOUR "ACOUSTIC RESEARCHERS." I THERE ANYONE TO LISTEN TO WELL PLAYED VINYL AGAIN OR FOR THE FIRST TIME, YOU WILL BE SPEECHLESS! Opaque, you are part of a crowd of pseudo scientists or a scientists, or a want to be scientists, and these are the ones I trust the less for anything related to art, they are actually the worst! -- GuyDebord Kharma Ceramique 3.2FE's wired with v/d Hul Inspiration. Opaqueice, How much I missed your dry scientific input in this thread! how were your vacations? Scientist and whales are mammals, 5.6 litter twin turbo v10 and a 1.6l turbo diesel are car engines, and you know I can go forever with this analogies. The point is that the biggest virtue of a musical instrument is its capacity to present a tone in direct response to the performers input, which is of course subject to every thing that affects him directly. Constantly shifting accuracies are not by definition something you can call a reference, therefore the word accuracy in sound reproduction looses a lot of relevance. So yes a trumpet is a trumpet but the infinite variations of the sounds of the trumpet renders the use of the word "trumpet" (as reference) incredibly ambiguous to even talk about it on terms of accuracy or any terms that are not related to the object per se. -- GuyDebord Kharma Ceramique 3.2FE's wired with v/d Hul Inspiration, REL Strata5. It would be useful to see some pictures of your fridge setting and glass stand. The fridge issue will require some surface transformation or casing. 1)Try placing in which ever way you can acoustic absorption material (foam or panels) in the reflective vertical surfaces around your fridge, back or side walls. Other more severe option is to box the fridge with a kind of furniture like structure and use acoustic lining or acoustic panels, always being careful not to block the heat dissipation system. I think you are missing a lot from this thread. In an anechoic chamber a guitar will sound way different than in your living room or a concert hall or in a park, and even the guitar itself has its own distinct sound signature that differs from other guitars. Of course, we all have an idea of how instruments should sound, but to talk about reproduction accuracy is a bit absurd once you realize that your references are always colored by the emotion of a musical experience in a specific space and a specific condition. Actually, this imprecision or inaccuracy which is inherent every time we listen to playing instruments is one of the wonderful properties of music. Music is emotion, and emotions are always in relational shift to the many conditions at play. Transmission of emotion is what one should look for in a speaker before anything else. Time to move up the chain and this are my final 2 options after taking a long auditioning tour. Dagordon, reversing the phase polarity on your rowland should have worked and for shure it shouldnt have made strange noises. It is not clear if you have tried already to reverse the polarity of the TP (not even sure if that is possible). you have to reverse the polarity of both channels in your system -- between the tp or the rowland, if this makes noises i would suggest giving jeff a call... Nice thought, or it could also be because the medium is more involving, you have to do far more things than pressing a button from your couch... But this is precisely part of the experience of vinyl. However, ultimately, the sound that comes out of an LP caresses your ears while you listen, and that is less fatiguing anyhow. -- GuyDebord Verity Audio Tamino X2 wired with v/d Hul Inspiration, REL Strata5. [Blows smoking pistol barrel] :) > Darren Dear Darren, I agree with you that pops and crackles are inconvenient, but the truth is that vinyl lovers are more than prepared to live with those seldom annoyances just for the real and incomparable pleasure vinyl gives 99% of the time. As with digital you have to live 100% of the time with fake sound floor and digital sounding lows and highs, among its other problems. Playing vinyl has become a pleasurable ritual for me, from the selection of the album, removing it from the sleeve, looking at the album art, cleaning it, turning on the TT, brushing the stylus, fixing the record clamp, lowering the arm, LISTENING, repeating steps to change to the B side, LISTENING, removing the clamp, the record, and putting it back into the sleeve... So yes, maybe vinyl is more difficult and inconvenient, but usually it is from the most difficult things that we get more pleasure out of. Of course I dont play vinyl all the time, when I have friends in or my family is in the room, when I want to play music that was not released on vinyl or when Im exhausted I have the Transporter, which also gives me great listening pleasure, but I realized that this pleasure last max 2 hours. You should give it a try, audio shows are the worst place to audition equipment, go to your dealer and seat quietly in the audition room, and then Im sure you will begin to understand why digital just hasnt cut it...yet.. -- GuyDebord Verity Audio Tamino X2 wired with v/d Hul Inspiration, REL Strata5. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 2 weeks without LP's!
Long version: 2 weeks ago I received an email from the Benelux distributor of Nagra, my phonostage (VPS) had to go for some factory upgrades I was told that since I had purchased one of the very first units that came out of Nagra (this january) they lacked of some modification done to them after the second batch (february?)... Anyway, I sent it immediately, I really wondered how much better could it sound after the mods, I had never heard anything so liquid and transparent from reproduced music, the resolution and spatial render of the VPS was already heavenly.. so its been 2 weeks and Im getting desperate. I thought that going purely digital for some weeks wouldnt be such a big deal, I use one of the best digital frontends my ears have heard: the incredibly regarded Slim Devices Transporter! but something has gone wrong!!! with relatively long listening sessions (3-4) hours) Digital has become torture!!! Whats wrong with me??? I just keep thinking about vinyl I tried to change cables, I borrowed two other digital frontends from friends (MBL noble line and Creek destiny), just to check if it was the TP that was causing fatigue, and actually the TP did well in the comparison, but after some hours of any digital, my ears began to suffer. Recent experience: Just a few hours ago I was listening to Leonard Cohen's "songs for love and hate" and I had to stop it, something I would never do to Leonard in vinyl, but the digital version just lacks any sense of musical liquidity, the noise floor sounds artificial, the lower cords of the guitar sound electronic, the atmosphere flat and his voice filtered... And this experience is repeated whenever I listen in digital what I normally listen in vinyl... I think that living without vinyl for 2 weeks (until now) is proof to me of how much I love it... The TP is a great digital front end, but after a few hours (as with other good digital frontends) it just tortures me with listening fatigue, and this, after years of listening to digital, is something I just found out. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] $1k Speakers
I helped my father audition speakers in this price range and without hesitation went for the NHT's Classic 3. I cannot recommend them more, find a dealer and audition them you wont regret it. But if you want to buy used, it all depends on how good of a deal you get, I love the transparency and ultra high resolution of Reference 3A speakers, and you could get a used pair of Dulcet's for less than 1000. Also dont forget the mighty Vandersteen's 2ce's, you could get lucky and get a pair for around a grand. have fun auditioning, -- GuyDebord Reference3A RoyalMaster monitors biwired with van den Hul Inspiration, REL Strata5.
