Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Is this better than CD quality?

2020-02-19 Thread Mike Sargent

It may be better quality than CD, but odds are that you can't hear the
difference. No one can. CD was designed to exceed the limits of human
hearing and in the last 40 years we haven't evolved bat-like hearing
(despite what people desperate to sell you the same music again say).

Test yourself and you will find that CD resolution is all you need.

I had downloaded those files and discovered that it just doesn't matter.
I don't *ever* listen at the sorts of volume that would be necessary to
hear these differences. I'd be deaf in days. Right now I'm listening to
Joss Stone (sounds great) and my SPL meter says I'm only listening at
around 75 dB. So that 96 dB (or 110 or whatever) dynamic range of CD
(ripped to FLAC in this case) is unimportant because I'm never going to
listen to it loud enough that it would matter.

These days I only get high def audio if it's cheaper than the CD (yes,
that does happen), or it's multi-channel (which I can certainly hear and
love).

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Last words on PONO...

2015-05-12 Thread Mike Sargent

Pono just announced a new feature: PonoRevealer. It downloads the same
song in multiple resolutions to your Pono player and then allows you to
change resolutions in the middle of a song. Resolutions include: MP3
(Amazon), AAC (Mastered for iTunes), CD (44.1/16), 96/24 and 192/24.

'PonoRevealer'

It sure would be interesting to see if someone can get at the low res
files and see what Pono has actually done when down-rezzing the original
file. A little science and some blind testing would be fascinating.

Anything that "burns in" or "breaks in" is also wearing out.

Why would you buy a cable that's wearing out?

(Basically, cable break in is a lie, just designed to get you to hold
onto the new cable until you can't return it, because they sound
*exactly* the same as much cheaper cables.)

I think there is serious money to be made by someone who builds a device
that sits between a CD player and an amp that introduces all of the
distortions, frequency limitations, wow & flutter, etc. that vinyl has,
and then periodically adds a click or snap to the audio and maybe even
once a day skips forward or backward on a particularly loud passage to
simulate a tone arm skip. An extra cost option would allow the user to
control just how badly the mismatch is between the RIAA equalization
curve applied during recording and playback. It could include a
magnifying glass so CD artwork appears as big as an album cover.

I think I'm off to the patent office.

More on Blu-Ray than DVD-A (by a long shot). I'm really enjoying High
Fidelity Pure Audio. Many are multi-channel, including some you wouldn't
expect like live jazz performances in the 50s and 60s. The nice thing
about Blu-Ray is that it can be played on any Blu-Ray player so it
doesn't require finding an SACD player, and BR is much easier to rip.

That's the part I don't know that I agree with. I presume they dug up
the original master tapes from the tour dates. If those have been stored
well, and were originally recorded well (good tape, clean heads,
engineers with some experience, etc.) there is no reason to assume that
they can't recover audio in excess of 44.1 kHz/16-bit.

That I do agree with (I have spent a lot on high res recordings over the
years, but I'm not sure I wouldn't have been just as well off with the
CD). They can release recordings with audio beyond the capabilities of a
CD, but it may be that no one can actually hear the difference.

And yes, I did buy CSNY 1974 and ripped the high res tracks. :-)

I have a Panasonic DMP-BDT230 Blu-Ray player and use Asset UPnP (from
the dbPoweramp folks) to stream any FLACs to my Denon receiver over
HDMI. Since it's HDMI it should work with any receiver.

The DBT230 is about $130 retail and is a very good BD player. It can
play back any FLACs including multi-channel. The only issue is that it
doesn't playback gapless, so when playing Dark Side of the Moon or live
recordings there is a short gap between tracks (well under a second, but
still very noticeable). I wish they would fix that.

As for compatibility, it plays every FLAC I have tried and that includes
stereo and multi-channel, 16 and 24-bit, and 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96 and 192
kHz.

Your local SqueezeBox server is down sampling the 192 kHz content. Try
loading a 192 kHz file onto an SD card or USB stick and plug those
directly into your Touch. You get an error message (sample rate too
high).

How about simply *allowing* the Touch to play 192 kHz tracks by
downsampling to 96 kHz [ (A + B) >> 1 is pretty quick ]? That way we
could at least hear those 192 kHz tracks instead of getting an error
message.

That should be cheap and easy to implement without requiring any major
