Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Best mod?
Quoting dwc <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: 1. I see the yellow circular (capacitor?) still soldered in place between pins 1 and 2 on the input side. What purpose does it serve? It's a varistor, for surge protection. Mine came with one too, but I removed it for better or worse. The case does look great, BTW. ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: where to buy 1748KE DAC
Quoting Amauta <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: I also did the power supply "mod" and removed the opamp. The opamp was a big difference, wider, clearer sound. Amauta Any phase differences in removing the opamp? Some people use firmware v15 after doing that mod, presumably getting them back to 'correct' absolute phase. Also, there is a low pass filter removed in the procedure- not that I know the consequences. For other reasons (the tumor like cap hanging off the rear), Vinnie of Red Wine is switching to a BB opa2604 opamp replacement for SB3. I'd like to hear this new mod, and wonder if it would make more sense to try- before completely removing. http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/viewtopic.php?t=25955&sid=4796c4cd5d84f0e45dfa54e46ffdbc5a ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Quoting ezkcdude <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: My "guess" was just an assertion that even the best DAC out there most likely doesn't make a whole heck of a lot of difference, The raison d'être of review publications* and informal reviews is to compare equipment through listening, of course complete objectivity is an impossibility. Nonetheless, the speculations become interesting when a piece of kit you own or consider purchasing is in the mix. Guesswork is not terribly interesting, whether I have attachment to the kit under speculation or not.. *for this example assume a publication with no advertising revenue :-) ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Quoting P Floding <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: Last time I checked hard disks had moving parts! ;-D I'm guessing the wink means you realize the disk isn't part of the timing chain. Of course, there is absolutely nothing that have stopped the industry from >doing this right all along, even with CD -they just haven't most of the time. I would think Moore's law played a large role in buffering and reclocking audio data, as Jim noted. P.S: Using the SB with an external DAC reintroduces the exact same old problem. Thus my infatuation with the internal DAC. If asynchronous transmission eliminates the catch 22 of having to seperate digital components for better isolation- while using less than ideal connections; an external DAC hanging off the SB seems rather Luddite in approach. ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Anyone recommend decent speaker cable?
Quoting opaqueice <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: According to these guys, speaker cable is probably the LEAST important element in an audio system: While I agree to a certain extent, his argument seems lame: "A high end compact disc (CD) player may cost several hundred to thousands more than typical mass market players, but usually offers higher fidelity and better durability certainly, it will offer better cosmetics, being less likely to be mass produced from molded plastic and pressed steel. The audio performance is often superior, the mechanical transport may be smoother (in mechanical performance, finish or sound quality) and more robust, and overall the CD player is likely to be more durable. The price differential is therefore justified by the higher quality components and thoughtful design that makes up the higher end CD player." [Mike Duda, from Rubbing the Snake Oil...] The above is proven utterly wrong by the Mcintosh music server. I believe in diminishing returns on all equipment, while he seems to recommend getting the best equipment you can afford, then going to Best Buy and blindly choosing Monster Cable. Even though he shuns cable manufacturers for using science (pseudo or not) in marketing, he uses none in discourse. Cable geometries and materials can have a dramatic effect on a sufficiently transparent system. They certainly don't all sound the same, and experimentation with wires (interconnects and speaker) can be a lot cheaper than replacing the source/speakers/preamp/amp. ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Quoting ezkcdude <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: < To paraphrase the Good Book, let those without sin cast the first stone!< < Those stores are legal, and their wares legal, becasue it's assumed that's the only copy of that disc in existence. The letter of the law (Audio Home Recording Act of 1992) allows backing up to cassette, and it's assumed you'll destroy the cassette when you sell the original disc. Even though the sticker says 'mp3 is not a crime', it may not be the whole truth. I'm not 'like mike' ie AL, but my understanding is based on this c:net article: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10165_7-5798512-1.html?tag=tnav If I like a cd, I keep the original. If I don't I sell it, and yes delete it. My squeezebox is too cool to have bad albums on it anyway. If I love it, I want that artist/label and everyone associated w/ the album down to the engineer and cover designer to get their credit due. If I sell a copy of the cd, that's one less person buying it from a big box (store). That's one less jo*nt willie can smoke, or one less p*le some exec can snort- but that's none of anyone's business. Our business of ripping and the hypocrisy's surrounding it shouldn't be anyone's business either, but that might change, so why flaunt our hypocritical behavior? It's bad enough SD is ranked 6th in google for 'ripping to flac'. FLAC will become a bad word soon , and a 'flac ripping ring' sounds absolutely hedonistic. FWIW I agree used stores can be shady too, I sometimes see promotional material that should have never been bought/sold, and sometimes even ask if I can have it for free- and why not???- just to start an argument. Maybe I have a problem...
