Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Behringer DEQ2496 in Transporter digital loop for room correction?
I used a Behringer DEQ2496 for around a year in between my digital transport (CD transport) and external DAC (Bel Canto DAC2). In the room in question, I found it to be VERY useful, as the room had serious audio issues and make my system sound pretty rubbish. Having said that, I then moved into a newer house with a much better listening room, which pretty much removed the requirement for the 2496. In that context, I found the impact on sound quality to be unacceptably high. It really isn't quite as transparent as we'd like to think (or hope). Note that this was using the 2496 with only a digital input and output, and with minimal manually applied room correction to only deal with a bass overhang. In short, if you have a decent room, don't bother as it'll be more damaging than useful. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Rc / Eq
I'm going to sit on the fence on this and say "it depends". I've used a Behringer DEQ2496 in my system very successfully in my old flat, but that was partly to do with the fact that the room in question had a lot of issues. In my new house, the listening room is clearly a lot better and I actually found that the 2496 was detrimental to the sound, even with everything disabled. So I'm going to suggest that in a troublesome room, can work wonders, otherwise it can be best without. For reference, I had played a lot with the DEQ and found that the auto-correction was particularly intrusive, and that a manual correction to dial out too much bass was the least intrusive. My setup was dedicated CD transport > DEQ2496 > External DAC > Stereo amp > speakers. So in theory, the DEQ was only taking in a digital signal and spewing one out of the other side. Quite how it damaged the sound quality just by being in sequence, I've never understood. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 2 weeks without LP's!
A potential reason for the OP to be suffering the issues is system synergy. I remember a few years ago visiting a chap with a Linn/Naim system. Have to say that he played some vinyl, and it was jaw droppingly good. He then cued up his Naim CDX, which virtually ripped my ears off. Truly awful. I didn't understand why until I'd listened to a bunch of other systems. My opinion now is that the two mediums do tend to sound different. The result can be that if you optimise your systems for LP replay, then CD most certainly WILL sound ghastly. Of course the same is true the other way around. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] UK: High sen sitivity floor-standers?
Some of the Focal units make it upto around 91bd/watt. Another option would be some of the cheaper horns. My old Impulse Lali's sold for £450 last year and have a slightly better efficiency than the Focals. If you can find a pair s/h, would be worth going to listen to. Another option are some of the Audio Note/Snell speakers. Most are pretty ugly, but they can sound ace when mated with the right source. Note that horns and high efficiency speakers have their own compromises. For example, my own are ruthlessly revealing of their source. The first time I heard a pair, I thought they sounded truly awful. Turned out that it was simply a really naff front end. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB+ info please
This weekend I had a comparison of my SB+ (digital only version) into my Bel Canto DAC2 vs a Denson (400?) CDP. Despite the fact that my SB+ was sat on Stillpoints and using better power and interconnect cables, both myself and the owner of the Denson preferred the sound of the Denson. On some tracks, there was little in it, on others, there was quite a difference, the SB+/DAC2 combo sounding "soggy" by comparison. What I mean by that is that the Denson was simply a lot more taut. Having said all of that, the Denson costs £2500 new, so to me that infers that the SB+ can compete with units upto around the £2k mark. I'd expect the Opus to have the edge. Regardless of the sonics, I still wouldn't change from the SB+ as I just love the functionality, and it still sounds brilliant. -- Mr_Sukebe SB+, Behringer 2496DEQ, Bel Canto DAC2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39815 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I've compared briefly between the two and there really is very little in overall difference. The reason why I use the DAC2 are: - I use a Behringer DEQ2496 between the SB+ and my DAC (purely in the digital domain), to use for room correction and deal with my primary bass room node - The speakers I use can be a little too forward when mated with the wrong kind of source/amp combo (they're horrible with Naim). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Room EQ
Yep, I use one. What would you like to know? Some immediate thoughts that might pre-empt your questions: - Mine is connect between my SB+ and DAC, thus totally in the digital domain. It can take analogue inputs and has analogue outputs - As purely a DAC, it's no great shakes, though I've heard a modded one (from Audiosmiles), which improved it a lot and IMO put it on par with a Benchmark DAC1 and sounded similarly dry. - If you buy the mic that goes with it, it's very useful for identifying the peaks and troughs that you might have in your room. - I tried the auto-equalisation and it certainly does work, resulting in a completely flat response. Unfortunately it also made a bit of a mess of the music, so I can't recommend that mode. - I DO use a manual override, aimed at quelling just one specific room node at 60hz. The impact from a single manual override is very small, but the benefits of getting rid of that "peak" are definitely well worth the effort. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Stax "Earspeakers"
When I was younger, I remember dem'ing a pair of Stax Lambda pro. At the time, they were awesome. A couple of years ago, I looked seriously at ditching my speakers/amp and going with just a CDP and headphones. Based on previous experience, I went straight out to try some Stax. I lined a comparison up between a pair of 3030s and some Senn 600s on the backend of a decent headphone amp. The result was not quite what I expected. Overall I prefered the Senns, I think because they gave a more similar presentation to my Linn speakers. The Senn combo was better in the bass, but had worse detail and wasn't as airy. More interestingly, I then compared with my speakers at home, at which point I canned the idea of the headphones as the speakers really were MUCH better to listen to. Assuming you want a pair of headphones, the implications are that the Stax will do some things better than virtually everything else available, but won't be perfect. Speakers are probably the most personal choice within a stereo system. Whilst I love what I own, you might hate them, so it's fairly pointless me recommending them or similar. Additionally, I really really don't like B&W speakers. Simply never heard a pair that did anything but put me off. You really need to go out a listen to a whole bunch of different types to see which you prefer. When I've heard Mac gear, it's been with their own speakers, which are also very weird looking. I'd suggest you find something you like. With regards to kit you could put in your lounge, a couple of other options come to mind: - A laptop with an external hard drive attached. I intended to use my own SB+ this way as we have an old laptop kicking around. Unfortunately the laptop in question was so old that it's simply got too little RAM to be effective (128MB). The benefits of a laptop would be size and relatively cool running. - A NAS such as a QNAP unit e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Qnap-TS-101500GB-TS-101-500Gb-Slimserver/dp/B000F9TD1I/ref=pd_bbs_sr_8/203-6345931-5577569?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1176393881&sr=8-8 NAS units can run the slimserver software, meaning that as long as you have another PC which can upload to the NAS, this can be run independantly. Whilst the groups you mention, might be the "major" camps, and you have to do is ask for a recommendation on a piece of kit, and see the answers you get. On far too many forums you'll get an answer of "buy X piece of kit, it's ace, cos I've got one", and if said piece of kit is twice the budget suggested there's probably going to be "save up for it, don't be a stingy git, you know it'll be worth it". Frankly, completely useless advice. My belief is that almost all manufacturers have their own style of presentation, often denoted by history, and the preference of their designers. So Arcam does sound different to Linn, Naim, Audionote, Krell, Musical Fidelity etc, and NONE of those answers are wrong. If the designer liked it, it means that some % of the buying public probably will to. As such, the important bit in our hobby is to find the style of presentation that bests suits the individual. Unfortunately it's not an easy thing to do, and can be quite expensive along the way. As for myself. From experience I like the dynamics of horn loaded speakers, have found that they work best with valve styles of presentation and don't want something that will rip my head off when I try to play compressed rock music. So my system has awesome transient attacks which has been achieved without the use of over energetic leading edges, meaning that it can be used effectively with a wide variety of music. -- Mr_Sukebe SB+, Behringer 2496DEQ, Bel Canto DAC2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34379 ___ audiophiles mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Review in Hi-Fi News (UK)
Another classic thread. Someone posts a review of a product owned by a person on here, and the magazine is clearly a rag, their testing is bad, the review sample was off and the reviewer is clearly tone deaf. What is it with some people on forums that they can't stand to have their kit criticised in anyway, shape or form. Frankly, who cares? If you like what you've bought, smile, be happy and stop making the rest of us wonder whether you're still suffering from cognitive dissonance. -- Mr_Sukebe SB+, Behringer 2496DEQ, Bel Canto DAC2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33276 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Have you (or anyone else) ever done a blind listening > test comparing the SB+ playing music to the stock SB? Just a thought on this question. As Patrick builds the SB+ by starting with a standard SB, don't you think that it would be fairly reasonable to assume that he's done a comparison between the two. Furthermore, lets assume he has, and has then gone on to market the SB+ at about five times the cost of the standard SB. To me that suggests one of two potential options: 1. He really believes that it is substantially better 2. What terrible cad he is, fobbing on this expensive tat As he's apparently never received a returned unit, which do you think is the most likely? Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to pass any judgement about how well an SB+ compares to a Transporter, never heard the two together, but it would seem reasonable to at assume it is likely to be at least fairly good. -- Mr_Sukebe SB+, Behringer 2496DEQ, Bel Canto DAC2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33917 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Two versions of the SB+ exist, one with a built in DAC, one without. As can be seen on my sig, I run a digital output via a Behringer 2496DEQ for room correction, before going onto my BC DAC. As such, I had no intention of using the built in DAC in the SB+, regardless of how good it is. I had been told that the digital output was a good deal better than the standard SB3, and the fact that it can compete with a good CD transport bears that out. I know a chap with a std SB3 who's heard a Meridian 500 transport (and that's a non-clocked 500), and thought that the 500 was a good deal better. Hope that helps. -- Mr_Sukebe SB+, Behringer 2496DEQ, Bel Canto DAC2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33917 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB+ review by TNT - Audio
Just to add. I recently took delivery of an SB+, never heard a Transporter so can't comment about a potential comparison. I'm using the SB+ purely as a transport, outputting the digital signal to an external Bel Canto DAC2. What I can comment on is the difference between my existing Meridian 500 CD tranport, which is rated as one of the better CDTs available, and that's before you add in the uprated clock, use of good anti-vibration kit. Out of the box, I preferred the Meridian, that was at least until the SB+ PSU got some time on it to burn in. The SB+ now sounds very much on par with my Meridian, meaning that I'm a happy bunny. -- Mr_Sukebe SB+, Behringer 2496DEQ, Bel Canto DAC2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33917 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The Linn website might interest you. Not only has full bandwidth CD WAV level files for download, but also 24 bit files, comparable to SACD. Might be worth a look. -- Mr_Sukebe SB+, Behringer 2496DEQ, Bel Canto DAC2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33813 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
