Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Hifiberry Digi+ Pro
Well, I wonder what Archimago would think about the waterbubbles that are controlled by the linear power. Archimago wrote a great review about the Dac+ Pro, so I do wonder why the video reviewer thought the normal sound of it was so horrible and that the linear power created a great audiophile sound. I have been using the Digi board in combination with optical and a Schiit Bifrost DAC, I really like the sound. Always on the search for something a bit better, I got the Digi+ Pro now (since yesterday) again via optical, I have not done any extensive testing, but it sounds very good. If it sounds better, honestly no idea yet. I could theoretically understand that a power supply for a DAC might make a difference, but the reviewer stated that it also made a dramatic difference with the Digi. That is something I really do not understand. Maybe someone could clear that up. I am more of an emotional listener, I know when it feels (sounds) right and when something is somehow lacking or off. All very personal observation. I will continue listening. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New AKM 4490 DAC
The Schiit Bifrost now uses the new AKM 4490 chip, current users can even upgrade their DAC with a new board. That is what I did - and I love it. To me it sounds even better than the device was before. CAREFUL - no blind testing, not scientific - just an impression (please ignore, if you cannot live with this) Obviously the difference is not night and day - but the soundstage seems wider and more 3 dimensional. Also like a veil has been lifted, the highs are very clear and bass is very precise and powerful. The old Bifrost was more diffuse - but also very good. I think it is great that these devices are upgradeable. There is even a more expensive Multibit option, which is supposed to sound great. But I am staying in the Delta Sigma DAC camp for now. If you are looking for a DAC to make your Squeeze sound better, try out the Bifrost. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] AKM4420 vs AKM4396
Wow, what happened to this thread? What started with a simple question and was answered with simple PERSONAL observations, turned to huge battle about nothing at all. Mainly a new platform for a person desperately trying to prove how utterly right he is and and how ignorant everybody else is. Well, I love to listen to music - classical and opera mainly - (my life revolves about classical music, since that is what I do for a living) for me it is the "software" that counts the music, I prefer a Mono recording with mediocre sound to some state of the art recording - if the performance on that is dull. I try and get the best possible audio on my budget and am glad I found it. The Squeezebox is an important part of it as now is my DAC the Bifrost. I have not done a scientific test, with perfect volume control, but I prefer the sound through the DAC to the original Touch sound. To me it is better. Maybe others can only be happy after they have found scientific proof, but I am glad I am a much simpler creature and can find pleasure easier. Friends who have come around love the sound the hear in my livingroom, so I have helped others to upgrade their systems and they still talk to me - so the advice could not have been that bad... I would much prefer reading personal info and stories to the same blind test, pseudo scientific jadada which has been posted in moreless every audiophile thread recently. I am so happy that there is someone like Archimago is in this forum, sharing his knowledge, without being selfimportant and dismissive of "normal" listeners and readers. I have learnt a lot reading his musings. This forum has - for years - been a friendly place for entusiasts, let us keep it that way. Just by stating something over and over again within a month it does not get truer or even more interesting. Have fun and listen to music! The answer is yes - so therefore I share my personal experience with my "friend" in this forum. With my own little ears :-) Did a lot of A/B obviously not labtests. Volume was the same. Again, only a household test, but since this is where it is going to be playing, it was fine for me. To me it sounds different and better than the Touch, have I got scientific proof - no, but my ears like it a lot more. I used to have the receiver and the Touch definitely was an acoustic upgrade, the Bifrost is yet another upgrade. The music coming through the Bifrost is even less harsh especially in higher frequencies, than with the Touch. I listen to a lot of classical music, this is where the difference is most obvious, I do not know if I could hear the difference with pop music. But especially with violins and operatic voices the difference ( to my ears) is well worth the cash. Btw I really do not think that Dacs belong to the voodoo section, different Dacs with different analog sections, sound different. Sometimes the difference is suttle, sometimes more than that. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] CD's vs. vinyl
usc95 wrote: > I found the following article an interesting read and thought some of > you might as well: > Thanks so much, what a great and interesting article! I believe the trouble with CDs being seen as a minor product, with harsh and cold sound, comes from the very first (affordable) CDplayers and later CD Walkmans sold, plus inferior analog to digital transfers or early digital recordings. Millions of years ago I had a Philips CD player, it was great not having scratches or having to turn the record in the middle of a classical music piece - but there was someting cold. As time progressed I got different CDplayers, shopping around I was fascinated how different they could sound, some still pretty harsh others warmer. The DACs in the players got better. Later again, I bought an extra DAC for my digital music needs, music has never sounded this good at my home. Clean, but warm and exciting, no fatigue. Early digital recordings also sound very harsh and cold, therfore well remastered analogue recordings can often sound a lot better than those digital recordings from the 80s. Remember in the early days we were told CDs were indestructable, so they were often scratched and treated badly and still popped into a CDplayer and using error correction music came out. So bad first CDs plus medeocre players with early DACs built in to them, sort of made up the minds of people, that CDs were practical but cold and even irritating. Never has it been so easy and cheap to get great sound at home as it is today. Just think of our Rasbberry Pi with a DAC card- what comes out of that litte device is better than many turntable setups costing tremendous amounts. I am pretty sure the Pi even matches - if not surpasses the Pogo, but have never heard one and probably never will. Vinyl to us older folks who have been there the first time they arrived are just a sort of an emotional thing of the past and they have great covers and booklets (That are easier to read as age progresses and sight diminishes) To young folks it is probably, being different and actually getting something for your money. Many of the young generation have never bought or collected CDs or digital music, so getting vinyl gives the them a good feeling. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] MUSINGS: What Is The Value of High Resolution Audio?
Archimago as usual your views and research are a very interesting read. Being a listener with relatively good hearing, I have often asked myself if there really is a difference between a CD flac and 24/96. Often it is the better remaster that makes the "big" difference. Also maybe the placebo effect, still sometimes I prefer the 24/96files. The difference is slight, but somehow it seems there is more audible space in the higher frequencies - no idea how to put it - probably sounds silly anyway. I find it is best heard on a solo violin, it sounds a bit different - but it it is difficult to pinpoint. But, truthfully the difference is pretty small - so no real reason to throw away all CDs and only buy hires. Sure the industry is now hoping to have something that will actually sell music again - since Streaming does not offer hires (yet). The most interesting point is, how the human mind works - how we see and hear things differently - if we want to, or are told to do so... I have the Touch and a Bifrost DAC and am incredibly happy with the sound. So, obviously I would get the Touch plus DAC, if I were you. The Touch is a great little device and the display also comes in handy, plus you can use the DAC with other devices as well. I have no idea what the Transporter sounds like. But the Touch definitely sounds better than the SB3 and with a good DAC (Bifrost) it sounds amazing. Guess you can tell I am happy with my system, to me the Bifrost made a great improvement - I really listen to music more than I used to, the sound of the Touch alone was just not right for me (hard to put these things into words), but with the DAC - no fatigue and it just sounds natural, exciting and - well right (my very personal experience) Squeezemenicely's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41812 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95202 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

With the Bifrost one has the feeling someone took off the lid and there is so much more there. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Schiit Bifrost Dac
These are my first impressions of my Bifrost which arrived today. Intro: I have been wanting to upgrade my Squeezebox sound for quite a while now. First upgrade was going from a Duet receiver to the Touch - which made a difference. But I was still not satisfied with the sound and detail etc. To really listen to music, I still used my NAD CD 545, which sounds great in my combo. Therefore I was looking for a DAC which would take the Touch to the level of my CDplayer. Since then I have been searching and reading, nearly bought the Beresford, but then found the Bifrost on the net when a gutfeeling told me to finally take a dive and buy this new DAC. Unboxing: It arrived today, so my impressions are very new. It looks beautiful and has a very sturdy build. It cost me about 360 Euros including shipping to germany and taxes, customs etc. Plugged it in and put on music I had just listened to yesterday and which I am familiar with. Beware this is not the sort of detailed A-B comparison, just an emotional report - and to me the emotions I get through music are most important. I had hoped for a little difference, but boy was I in for a (positive) shock. First piece I put on was "The Lark Ascending" with Nicola Benedetti, the violin was sailing high and light between my speakers, rich detail up to the highest notes, sounds stupid - but here it is, it sounded as if the violin was in my livingroom, none of the harshness I had with the Touch. Loads of detail, but the violin still sounded warm and did not loose body. Next Holst Planets the Levine recording (underrated great sounding recording)What went on during Mars, was unbelievable and very satisfying. The orchestra in full blow, amazing soundstage, very clear (without being irritating) the bass really tight. I have never heard my stereo like this. It really sounds as if a veil was lifted and everyting is now in a next level. Went on with some 24bit Beatles, Yesterday and SGT Pepper never sounded so alive and let's call it real. Long story short, I am very happy that I waited for the Bifrost to arrive. Problem is, now my CDplayer sounds dull in comparison - so I will also connected it to my DAC. I am not a believer of Burn-in, but there are quite a few people that write that DACs begin to sound a lot better after burn-in. All I can say,is that it sounds amazing out of the box - so should it sound even better after a couple of days or weeks, I am all for it - should it stay the same, it is already much better than I had hoped for. I found the Bifrost through a guy on "The Art of Sound - forum" and am very grateful I did. -- Squeezemenicely Squeezebox Server 7.6.1 on Squeezeplug (Dockstar) Synology DS-410j NAS Squeezebox Touch Squeezebox Boom Spotify Premium iPhone: iPeng - iPad: Squeezepad Squeezemenicely's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41812 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91772 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

When I bought my new CD player NAD CD545 the sound improved a lot - actually that is exactly the sound I am looking for from my Touch. When I went from Duet to Touch, there was also quite a difference. The Touch sounds good, but just not as good as my CDplayer. I listen to a lot of classical music, therefore the difference is probably more apparent, than when listening to Pop etc. High soprano voices, High Strings sound a bit harsh on the Touch and lose a bit of the body and are less transparent. Listening to the same music from my CDplayer, is just a lot more soothing, musical and gratifying to me. My system is pretty good, with a NAD Amp and Nubert speakers - which to me sound absolutely great (took me long to find the right speakers) So to me there is a difference between these sourceplayers, it is not night and day, but very noticeable to me. If a new DAC will make as much of a difference as the upgrade from Duet to Touch, then I would be happy. -- Squeezemenicely Squeezebox Server 7.6.1 on Squeezeplug (Dockstar) Synology DS-410j NAS Squeezebox Touch Squeezebox Boom Spotify Premium iPhone: iPeng - iPad: Squeezepad Squeezemenicely's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41812 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91233 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone got Matrix Mini-i or Atoll 100 Dac?
Thanks gizek, it is a rather difficult decision to make, the electronics all look the same to me. It is especially difficult, since there are no real reviews or infos out there. Probably the fetaudio option is best - but since I would have to pay someone to build it for me and buy extra transformer, make a case etc., without actually having heard it myself to judge before, is just not a bit too risky for me. These sort of "homemade" DACS seem not to be widely used, unlike the Beresford - which moreless has it's own forum and many people loving it (in the forum) and with mixed feelings outside (most seem happy). If you have a lot of money to spend, DAC decisions are easier - I don't. DAC's are a one-trick pony, so that one trick should be pretty impressive. I do not want to spend money, just to get the Touch sounding minimally better and only if you really concentrate. As with the Beresford, I have read opinions that the difference is not really worth it, nearly nonexistant, going up to changing the sound in a very positve way. Trouble is, I would have to order all of these devices from abroad and would be stuck with them - no local dealer etc. I used to have a Duet, the sound of the Touch is much better IMHO, all I want is something that will make my Touch sound as good as my CDplayer. I guess only a minimal group here are interested in a cheap but good DAC, I would have hoped for a bit more feedback. The Beresford would cost me about 300 Euros, the Fetaudio probably more (getting extra parts and paying someone to build it), the Atoll around 400 Euros - noone here seems to know it. -- Squeezemenicely Squeezebox Server 7.6.1 on Squeezeplug (Dockstar) Synology DS-410j NAS Squeezebox Touch Squeezebox Boom Spotify Premium iPhone: iPeng - iPad: Squeezepad Squeezemenicely's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41812 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91233 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone got Matrix Mini-i or Atoll 100 Dac?
@gizek Thanks, I had read your other post about the fetaudio kit. The price is great, but I am not good at soldering - better yet, do not trust myself. They also sell it fully assembled for 220 - but that probably means that I would still have to buy a box and solder the plugs etc - or am I wrong and they send it ready to use? So in your opinion it really is that good?!? What sort of box did you use? I know this sounds stupid, but I would also like a DAC to look somewhat good - as it is gonna be in my rack... [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Duet plus Beresford DAC or Touch, better sound?
Well I am in a bit of a moral dilemma. I own the Duet receiver and am quite happy with the sound - but it could be better... Now I have been looking into getting a DAC, the Beresford Caiman /gator or Atoll Dac 100 are on my list. Now i have read that the Touch sounds better that the Duet and that the Beresford does not actually make a difference once you have a Touch. So what would give me the best sound?
