Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is the best top end player now ?

2012-11-26 Thread agentsmith

Hi, I happen to owned both the Transporter and a Naim DAC. Since then I
have "upgraded" to dCS Debussy driven by Mac Mini and Pure Music.

I never made a comparison between these DACs, but I still miss the
Transporter for its excellent display and interface. And my memory of
it, not having made comparison side by side, is not too shady either.

Question for below, have you tried mating the Transporter with one of
those DACs, especially the Debussy? Will I reap the full benefit of the
improvement? Or is USB/Pure Music or Amarra the connection of choice.

I am about to order a Transporter SE before they disappear from the face
of the earth, which it seems is the direction it is heading.

thanks in advance.

I looked at that Bryston paper and it looks very draft and confusing.

There is supposed to be a LAN port built in and they would be
incredibly clueless and stupid if they would not include LAN file
access i the first release.

I think it is a work in progress and I am sure that when it comes out
it will have that function built in. It'd be suicidal not to.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter vs. Duet+DAC?

Depends on the DAC. I have had SB with Benchmark DAC1 and Lavry DA10.
The Transporter sounded much more natural than both in my system.

I have since sold my transporter and is waiting for delivery of a Weiss
DAC to be connected to an SB2 and a new Macbook. Looking back, I should
have kept the Transporter as well. It really is a gem.

The Transporter was one heck of a nice box that sounded nice, I am now
using the SB2 as a substitute while waiting for my Weiss DAC. The sound
of course is nothing like the Transporter. While waiting for the
Transporter I am learning about how to set up a PC to be a media client

hard.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help - distorted sounds!

2009-06-02 Thread agentsmith

Yes this must be frustrating. By all means you should demand an
exchange from the seller.

Since SqueezeCenter is updated very frequently, there is an off chance
that you could have hit some bugs under a certain configuration. But
apparently your problem seems to be physical.

If you still have the patience you can always try switching cables etc,
just to make sure it is not something smaller. If you haven't already.

Oh and RCA should not sound terrible. It will have less gain, and
there may be subtle difference in quality.

That is a smashing good deal!

To tell you the truth, in my mid range Naim system I could not hear
obvious differences between 44.1/16 and 96/24 tracks. I've been called
deaf by other members but to me they both sounded very good on the
Transporter.

I can hear obvious improvements between a Naim Powerline or Hi-Line and
ordinary cables.

But dont buy it for the hires files alone. The Transporter is
extraordinary with 44.1/16 files alone. The rest is just bonus.

IMHO, the quality of the master/mix is far more important.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help - distorted sounds!

Actually you mentioned you did the xilinx reset. I personally never did
that before.

But there is also a Factory Reset procedure, last time I had a problem
with the Transporter caused by playing some 24bit 192Khz files, a
Factory reset fixed it.

To do a factory reset:

1. Disconnect the power
2. Press and hold "Add" on the remote
3. Reconnect the power
4. Release the "Add" button when you see "Factory reset..." on the
screen

You then have to go through the initial network setup procedures etc.
again.

Give it a shot, it fixed my Transporter a few times.

Actually, yes. There was an extremely biased and carelessly written
review from audioenz.com, highlighting only on how operating the
Transporter is as difficult as learning a new instrument, and that it
sounds good, but a Airport express+DAC is just as good for less money.
Both highly untrue of course as I used an Airport Express with Lavry and

You need something like the Adam active speakers or the Dynaudio desktop

Just found some time to try what Aspen suggested, and I was plesently
surprised.

I have one Powerline and one 3 in 1 Grahams Hydra. Originally, the
Powerline is connected to the HiCap and the Hydra connected to the
200+NAPSC+Transporter.

First I tried swapping the Powerline from the HiCap to the 200, the
system sounded somewhat muddier and less dynamic. Switching it back
brought back the dynamics right away.

I then switched the Powerline to the Transporter. Now all three Naim
devices that need power (200/Hicap/NAPSC) are connected to the Hydra.
Right away I know I am getting more resolution. The system is sounding
crystalline, may be a little less dynamic than when the HiCap was fed by
the Powerline. But overall the system just sounds more transparent.

So my initial verdict is the source first (even non-naim source), HiCap
comes second and 200 benefits least from the Powerline.

Now I will need another Powerline. Or maybe upgrade to a 282?

And yes for now the Powerline is staying on the Transporter, which is
not even Naim.

Is there a way to chance the receptacles inside the Transporter?
Secondly, am I missing something? Are there different sizes of TOSLINK
connector? O know there are mini-Jack types, and no I wasnt using a
mini jack cable.

There is quite a bit of good classical music from Linn records. I
bought their Bach St Matthew's Passion and Handel Messiah and they are
superb.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Can you hear the difference?

2009-02-26 Thread agentsmith

Can you tell the difference between 44.1/16 and 96/24?

I did an experiment tonight:

Music:

"When I Dream" from Carol Kidd's latest "Dreamsville"

44.1/16 ripped from CD layer of Hybrid SACD
96/24 downloaded from Linn Website studio master

System:

Source: Transporter
Pre: NAC202, HiCap, NAPSC
Power: NAP200
Speakers: Harbeth Monitor 30

I honestly cannot tell the difference.

Can you? I'd be interested to know.

I thought this Linn album would be a good comparison since they should
be from master of the same quality level being so new.

OK I am now convinced that the sudden degradation of sound in my system
was caused by loose banana plugs, I had the plugs refitted now
everything is sounding right again.

For those of you who find that sound changed after your firmware

Hmm my TP also is not playing anything from its TOSLINK. I never
bothered to report it but the connections to my TOSLINK cables are

Do you have very loose connection to your cable as well?

The TOSLINK connection is probably one of the worst ever designed.

I do not think I am imagining the sound difference. Although come to
think of it I did do someone a favor by swapping a Naim cable with him
with a non-Naim connector. That guy was paranoid with his non-naim
connector used so I thought "knock yourself out".

I was never very supersditious about audio voodoos, but this time it
looks like I may have been hit by being a "non-believer"

But before I go out and redo my cable, I would like to try the

Agree, but curiously the Lavry DA10 has generated such an interest in
the forum, even compared to a CD555 with 2 555PS! They should have
heard the Transporter, I owned the Lavry and Benchmark DAC. In my
humble Naim system the Transporter is way ahead.

But with your Naim equipment level, the fact that you are happy with
the transporter should be quite an endorsement?

If you do a shootout with a CD555 like the Lavry, may be there will be
an exodus to the transporter as well.

Yes it does sound like the Transporter runs with the best of them. I
was wondering how people acquainted with high end DAC costing 10X+ of

I think that stir that the Lavry is causing at the Naim board is

Thanks WSLAM, I trust your opinion - with equipment of such calibre and

I am also at a stage when I do not think my system can easily be
improved at its price point, and that is a happy place to be. The
Transporter and the Harbeth M30s have managed to bring me to this
stage. I am sure it is no Magico but that is a whole different

I guess I will try to be content and just enjoy my music collection.

Comparing digital sources is a funny thing. I tried A/B'ing digital
sources and they all sounded the same with AB tests. But it only takes
a couple of days to realize the sound differences.

If your experience is like mine, the Transporter stopped my endless
upgrade itch. In the past 2 years I have bought 3 different DACs to
mate with my SB2, including Benchmark, Lavry and beresford. All left
me want for more.

To me the Transporter sounds more open and more detailed than all of
the above. I am no good with describing sound but for me a piano
sounds like more like the real thing, and violin sounds less edgy.
Overall I am a satisfied customer.

Since you have bought one you'd be the best judge. I would be
interested to know what you think.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Beresford DAC ... Who uses one and how good is it really ?

2009-01-03 Thread agentsmith

I have used Benchmark DAC1, which I sold in anticipation of the Naim HDX
and bought a Beresford DAC for temporary replacement. I gave up on the
HDX idea but finally got myself a Transporter.

The Beresford is very reasonably priced but I think it would stuggle to
even get close to what your Naim CDI sounded. To me the Beresford
sounds different than the SB2 but not necessarily better. The
Benchmark and Lavry are in a completely different class, I favor the
DA10 more with its warmer sound.

But ultimately, the Transporter sounds better than all the DACs by a
large margin in my Naim system. Sounding both detailed and
unfatiging.

Seeing that you have the CDI and an LP12, I think you would be left
unsatisfied using the Beresford and would end up upgrading.

Yes, actually, to be more detailed, I:
1. Downgraded from SB2/Benchmark to SB2/Beresford, the Beresford was no
better than SB2 alone to my ears,
2. Upgraded to SB2/Lavry, sounds warmer and slightly more listenable
than SB2/Benchmark. much better than SB2/Beresford
3. Sidegraded to Transporter analogue out to amp

I also did not expect the Transporter to be much of an improvement
since many in this forum mentioned that they are very close. Somehow
in my all Naim system they sound very good together. Perhaps it is
system matching? I only know that I no longer have the itch to
upgrade.

Are anyone else on this board using Transporter in their Naim setup?
I;d be very interested in how it compares with CDX2 or CD5X.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Thank you for Transporter

2008-12-29 Thread agentsmith

I mentioned this elsewhere before, but I recently upgraded from
SB2/Lavry to transporter, and the improvement is stunning in my system.
The Transporter has gobs more detail and yet sounding silky smooth.
The SB2/DAC combination does not even come close IMO.

I hesitated for a long time, changing from Benchmark DAC to Lavry,
because many in this forum opines that SB3/Benchmark sounds just as
good as a Transporter.

Well in my Naim system it does not. I never believed in night and day
differences especially in similar grade digital front ends. Now I
witness it first hand.

I have also described my experience in the Naim forum, who has been
raving about the Lavry like it is manna from heaven, comparing it to a
$5K+ CDX2 or evan a CD555, with nary a mention of Transporter.

http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=67019385&f=8772903417&m=7042993617&r=6092926717#6092926717

certain negative review from down under.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter versus SB3 with Beresford DAC

2008-11-24 Thread agentsmith

OK I owned a Benchmark DCA1, bought a Beresford as temporary replacement
and now using the Lavry DA10. Rest of system is All Naim NAC202
pre/NAP200 power/HiCap power supply/NAPSC power supply/Ariva speakers.

I have not heard the Transporter, but it would have to pretty poor if
it does not sound a whole lot better than the Beresford DAC. The
Beresford is a good value considering its price, it sounds different
than the SB2, warmer, but not necessarily better. The Benchmark and
the Lavry both have a whole lot more details. I personally like the
Lavry better, not as clincal as the Benchmark in my humble opinion.

By the way my Beresford was bought in September this year so relatively
new. I sold it for a song a few weeks ago.

I used to own a Benchmark DAC1 sans USB. I did not recall it being able
to go on standby. In fact it tends to get quite warm. Is this a new

Hopefully those cosmetic items do not account for a big chunk of the
difference in pricing. My expectation is that the main point of the
Transporter is to improve on the sound of the SB3, and the difference
in cost should be attributed to sound quality.

I would hope that more than one third of the cost is the analogue
output section and the DAC+circuitry, I would think that these are just
about the only 2 parts that seperates its sound quality from the SB3
which cost a fraction of the transporter.

Price wise it is a little over the top. But I would think the Meridian

controlled room correction so it may compenasate for the echoy

Let me try tonight to hear how it sounds in my bathroom.

Sorry I am curious- If you were going to use the use the DAC of an AV
processor, why did you buy a Transporter in the first place? What sets
the Transporter against the SB3 is largely its digital audio system. Or
do you have a killer AV processor?

I agree with that being a Naimee. To me it is a Naim quality CD player
plus a Transporte minus digital in. I am sure sound wise it would at
least give the Transporter a good run for the money. Too bad it is
sooo much money. Surely the power supply and case isolation would be a

Thanks I have always used Naim amps and they never get turned off
anyway.

I did not believe much in burning in either, but the 202/200 were
incredibly hard when first arriving and is already improving a lot
after a couple of days.

I think I would take your adivce and keep it slow, instead of risk
buring out $5000 worth of equipment. Thanks by the way.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Burning amp in with dummy load

2008-04-14 Thread agentsmith

Trying to burn in my Naim 202/200, but wife would kill me if I blast it
24/7.

Some Naim head who seems to be in the know told me to buy a pair 20W/8
Ohm resister and connect the two ends to the +ve and -ve of both the
left and right channel and play music on it 24/7

1. Is this an effective way?
2. Will it hurt my equipment?
3. What volume should I feed it, if I crank it to max volume will it
burn out the amp? Or will it cause a fire hazard?
4. How long can I do it continuously without hurting the amp?

This seems like an attrative way to do it as it means stressing the amp
without waking up the neighbour and the wife.

Like your said, YMMV. In my case, I went from not being able to tell
between an SB2 nude to a SB2-Benchmark DAC1-Naim Nait5i. Now that I
have upgraded my amps to Naim 202/200 , the difference between an SB2
and a mere half decent Pioneer Universal player is quite big to the CD
player's favour.

Apparently the 202/200 are differentiating the sources much more than
the Nait 5i. Then again the amps may not be properly burned in yet.
Not sure if they will get more or less revealing.

But of course anyone could tell between analog sources.

I agree with the previous poster. It very much depend on what the rest
of your system is. I just upgraded from Naim integrated to Naim
seperates, and the differences between sources went from almost
non-existant to glaringly obvious. Now that I have sold my Benchmark
DAC1 I really miss it. The SB3 by itself really show its rough edges
when driving a higher end, more revealing system.

I sold my Benchmark-DAC1 with the intention of getting the all-in-one
Naim SuperNait with a built in DAC. But when I went to the store I
ended up getting the Naim 202/220 seperates instead. Now I am really
missing the DAC1, the 202/200 is really revealing the weakness of the
SB2's analogue section.

I am thinking of getting either a Transporter or a Cambridge Azur 804C
CD player with built in DAC.

Actually, I found with HDMI cables that it is actually better to buy
cheap mass market HDMI cables that is thinner then buying thick and
expensive ones. I actually had lots of trouble with thicker cables as
they tend to get yanked off the poorly designed HDMI sockets,
potentially even damaging the sockets permenantly.

And no matter what they say, I am not convinced that digital cables can
make much of a difference.

Actually that is what it said on the manual. But somehow the dealer

Actually the Nait 5i was sold in a heartbeat, I dug my trusty (and

After comparing the little F80 wonder with the main system, I am now
having second thought. The little F80 is a minor miracle, but it is
still unable to defy physics completely. Dont think I am quite ready
to kick this habit yet.

I am now thinking to get the Supernait.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Digital coaxial cable with mic jack

2007-12-23 Thread agentsmith

Just got my Meridian F80 and found that its digital in is a mic jack
which also dual as analog in. I am used to RCA digital out from my SB2
to balanced in for my Benchmark.

I went to an A/V shop and asked for a digital coaxial cable with RCA on
one end and mic jack on the other. The salesman gave me an cheapo
analog RCA cable with mic jack on the other end which is usually used
for analog. The salesman told me that the cable can be used in both
analog and digital. (1) Is this true? (2) If it works, would the
sound be compromised? (3) What is the difference between an analog and
digital cable?

Adam I notice that you have a Pioneer 747 which I assume is quite a few
years old. I have the same model which thanks to Squeezebox has rarely
been used. But despite that the unit has been quite unreliable,
required out of warranty repair for failure to play discs and recently
the remote control only accepts on/off commands.

Have you had similar reliability issues with your unit? Or is it
really fully unused?

I am pondering whether to acquire a last of the line universal player
or repair+upgrade the Pioneer.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] HD Music Downloads from iTrax

2007-04-30 Thread agentsmith

I own a few of your DVD-As and has read from one of the magazines from
an article you wrote about "high definition" audio that you were
planning for online downloads.

Being a Slim user this is really good news and I am not suprised that
you are also "one of us".

I was excited about download offering from HDTT and have bought a few
of their downloads. But HDTT focuses on historical recordings so AIX
with their well recorded material would be even better.

One question I have is that SB3's digital output maxes out at 48Khz/24
Bit Stereo. Will you be offering that in addition to 96/24 for the
transporter?

Another quesiton is: What happened to the Jennifer Warnes recording
that I have waited for years?

Just wondering, how did you check if the SB3 downsampled it to 48Khz?

Actually I did more testing, using dbPoweramp converter, I reconverted
the WAV file into 24/96, which is the same format as the original file,
and the WAV file seemed to work fine. I have not tried compressing it

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Repost: High definition downloads

2007-03-05 Thread agentsmith

I am excited about recent development higher definition downloads. This
could potentially mean that my computer gear would catch up or rise
above my SACD/DVD player. Although my SB2 is problematic when it comes
to decoding anything beyond 16/44.1, (I downloaded from HDTT and still
have not been able to play without studdering), I can still see the
poetential there.

However, I just noticed that SB3 only support up to 24bit 48Khz. So my
questions for the technical gurus are:

1. Are there any sonic benefits when playing 24/96 or 24/88 through the
Sb3?

2. I am connected via coxial from the SB3 to a Benchmark DAC-1, If I
play 24/96 or 24/88 thru the SB3, what resolution is passed thru the
coaxial?

3. is it problematic for layman to transcode these high def downloads
to other formats, e.g. WMA to WAV, 24/88 to 24/48 or 24/96 to 24/48?

4. Not really a question: I think high quality downloads and the Slim
are match made in heaven, it would be excellent if Slim and the content
provider can work together and provide SB2 or Transporter certified
downloads. i.e. Tested with the gears and certified to be the highest
quality possible for the gear. I see a strategic alliance there.

The folks at HDTT was kind enough to let me download a new set of
files.

I downloaded the whole album again, this time the file size and bit
rate of 2,700kbps makes more sense.

However, I encountered the exact same symptons, the files all started
dropping off consistently at certain spots, tried different connection
methods and all that. This time I also tried to uncompress into WAV
files with exact same results.

Note that I played from my laptop from WinDVD and it played fine. So
this should be a compatibility issue.

I do not have the right cabling but I may try to bypass my DAC1 and go
straight to my amp later.

I just purchase and downloaded the Erick Friedman Violin Show pieces
album and is experiencing drop outs on all the songs.

I tried network test and it passed all the tests 100% up to the max of
5Mbps.

Also tried different connectivity methods, including connecting direct
Fast Ethernet 100Bbps connection same reaults.

Also tried different Slimserver levels, 6.5.0, 6.5.1 and a much older
version (forgot version)

The songs are all dropping out at the exact same spots with all
connection methods.

One curious point is the HDTT 96Khz FLAC files are only streaming at
about 600Kbps, which is only slightly higher than a regular red book
44.1Khz files. For comparison, my 24bit/96Khz file I ripped from a
DVD-Audio disc (Aaron Neville-Ave Maria)streams at 1.7Mbps, what
gives?

By the way, my 1.7Mbps 24/192 files streams perfectly on my network.
So I suspect thisa is a encoding or compatibity issue here?

Thanks! Now that is customer responsiveness!

I am trying to download it now and if it works I will definitely get at
least the violin showpiece one.

BTW, I wonder if there is a way to distribute via some sort of private
(secured) bittorrent network? Just a thought, it would save you a lot
of bandwidth. 24/96 is a lot of megabytes!

I did not read the rerlier responses to the sampler. Judging from the
responses, it does seem people from this board are ready with their
credit cards. A full res sample, even a small one, would really help.

A product like yours is made for SB people who are 100% digital
converts, and most are die hard audiophiles AND music lovers. A
marriage made in heaven if you ask me.

Dear HDTT,

May I ask the reason for taking down the sampler? I would imagine the
sampler will help with sales.

Low res would help to illustrate the performance, but it would be
really helpful if you could put up a sampler with full resolutiom, even
30 seconds is good enough. That would (a) give us an idea of the
quality. (b) Prove if it works with our equipment.

I dont think you will be sorry, I forsee that Slim Devices users are
right up the top of the list of your target market.

I cant wait to stream it to my DAC1

This is great news! I just read about HDTT on Tone Audio. They did not
mention downloadability so this is a perfect chance to try it out.

Question to HDTT: Have these recordings been tried out on Slim's
devices? Also, I read about a sampler with extracts, but cannot find
it on your web site. Can you point us to the right direction?
Extracts would really help to evaluate the styles and quality of the
music, and I am sure for audience of this forum would entice purchases.

Agreed in gerneral, but Love Over Gold is sort of an exception. It is
quite acoustic and used to be commonly used as a demo disc. Agreed
with classical piano. MP3 usually makes solo piano sounds grossly
distorted with sibilance. Glenn Gould's 1982 Goldberg Variations would
be a nice comparison tool. Also, with his humming in the background, on
a good headphone system, it sounded like someone is humming to your ears
and once it made me jump while listening in the middle of the night.

Also, Jazz piano like Bill Evan's Trio or Keith Jarrett would probably
shows the downside of MP3. I bought a lot of Bill Evans from eMusic
and they sound horrid.

This is an excellent idea!

But it'd be nice if you do not tell us whether it starts with MP3 or
FLAC

Also, a "clean" track like Dire Straits "Love Over Gold" would be very
nice
