Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is the best top end player now ?
Hi, I happen to owned both the Transporter and a Naim DAC. Since then I have "upgraded" to dCS Debussy driven by Mac Mini and Pure Music. I never made a comparison between these DACs, but I still miss the Transporter for its excellent display and interface. And my memory of it, not having made comparison side by side, is not too shady either. Question for below, have you tried mating the Transporter with one of those DACs, especially the Debussy? Will I reap the full benefit of the improvement? Or is USB/Pure Music or Amarra the connection of choice. I am about to order a Transporter SE before they disappear from the face of the earth, which it seems is the direction it is heading. thanks in advance. jh901 wrote: > The top digital players are manufactured by dCS and their "ring DAC" is > pretty much the king. Yes this must be frustrating. By all means you should demand an exchange from the seller. Since SqueezeCenter is updated very frequently, there is an off chance that you could have hit some bugs under a certain configuration. But apparently your problem seems to be physical. If you still have the patience you can always try switching cables etc, just to make sure it is not something smaller. If you haven't already. Oh and RCA should not sound terrible. Actually you mentioned you did the xilinx reset. I personally never did that before. Disconnect the power 2. Press and hold "Add" on the remote 3. Reconnect the power 4. I have one Powerline and one 3 in 1 Grahams Hydra. Originally, the Powerline is connected to the HiCap and the Hydra connected to the 200+NAPSC+Transporter. First I tried swapping the Powerline from the HiCap to the 200, the system sounded somewhat muddier and less dynamic. Switching it back brought back the dynamics right away. I then switched the Powerline to the Transporter. Now all three Naim devices that need power (200/Hicap/NAPSC) are connected to the Hydra. Right away I know I am getting more resolution. The system is sounding crystalline, may be a little less dynamic than when the HiCap was fed by the Powerline. But overall the system just sounds more transparent. So my initial verdict is the source first (even non-naim source), HiCap comes second and 200 benefits least from the Powerline. Now I will need another Powerline. Or maybe upgrade to a 282? OK I am now convinced that the sudden degradation of sound in my system was caused by loose banana plugs, I had the plugs refitted now everything is sounding right again. Comparing digital sources is a funny thing. I tried A/B'ing digital sources and they all sounded the same with AB tests. But it only takes a couple of days to realize the sound differences. If your experience is like mine, the Transporter stopped my endless upgrade itch. In the past 2 years I have bought 3 different DACs to mate with my SB2, including Benchmark, Lavry and beresford. All left me want for more. To me the Transporter sounds more open and more detailed than all of the above. I am no good with describing sound but for me a piano sounds like more like the real thing, and violin sounds less edgy. Overall I am a satisfied customer. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Beresford DAC ... Who uses one and how good is it really ?
I have used Benchmark DAC1, which I sold in anticipation of the Naim HDX and bought a Beresford DAC for temporary replacement. I gave up on the HDX idea but finally got myself a Transporter. The Beresford is very reasonably priced but I think it would stuggle to even get close to what your Naim CDI sounded. To me the Beresford sounds different than the SB2 but not necessarily better. The Benchmark and Lavry are in a completely different class, I favor the DA10 more with its warmer sound. But ultimately, the Transporter sounds better than all the DACs by a large margin in my Naim system. Sounding both detailed and unfatiging. Seeing that you have the CDI and an LP12, I think you would be left unsatisfied using the Beresford and would end up upgrading. -- agentsmith System 1: Transporter, Naim 202/200/Hicap/NAPSC/Ariva System 2: SB2 connected via TOSLINK to a Meridian F80 agentsmith's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1838 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57619 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Downgraded from SB2/Benchmark to SB2/Beresford, the Beresford was no better than SB2 alone to my ears, 2. Upgraded to SB2/Lavry, sounds warmer and slightly more listenable than SB2/Benchmark. much better than SB2/Beresford 3. Sidegraded to Transporter analogue out to amp I also did not expect the Transporter to be much of an improvement since many in this forum mentioned that they are very close. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Thank you for Transporter
I mentioned this elsewhere before, but I recently upgraded from SB2/Lavry to transporter, and the improvement is stunning in my system. The Transporter has gobs more detail and yet sounding silky smooth. The SB2/DAC combination does not even come close IMO. I hesitated for a long time, changing from Benchmark DAC to Lavry, because many in this forum opines that SB3/Benchmark sounds just as good as a Transporter. Well in my Naim system it does not. I never believed in night and day differences especially in similar grade digital front ends. Now I witness it first hand. I have also described my experience in the Naim forum, who has been raving about the Lavry like it is manna from heaven, comparing it to a $5K+ CDX2 or evan a CD555, with nary a mention of Transporter. http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=67019385&f=8772903417&m=7042993617&r=6092926717#6092926717 Thanks SlimD, you deserve a much better review than the recent BS from certain negative review from down under. -- agentsmith System 1: Transporter and a mostly Naim system System 2: SB2 connected digitally to a Meridian F80 agentsmith's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1838 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57325 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter versus SB3 with Beresford DAC
OK I owned a Benchmark DCA1, bought a Beresford as temporary replacement and now using the Lavry DA10. Rest of system is All Naim NAC202 pre/NAP200 power/HiCap power supply/NAPSC power supply/Ariva speakers. I have not heard the Transporter, but it would have to pretty poor if it does not sound a whole lot better than the Beresford DAC. The Beresford is a good value considering its price, it sounds different than the SB2, warmer, but not necessarily better. The Benchmark and the Lavry both have a whole lot more details. Thanks all. These advices sound quite sensible. I think I will just let the amp settle in by itself in its intended environment. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Burning amp in with dummy load
Trying to burn in my Naim 202/200, but wife would kill me if I blast it 24/7. Some Naim head who seems to be in the know told me to buy a pair 20W/8 Ohm resister and connect the two ends to the +ve and -ve of both the left and right channel and play music on it 24/7 1. Is this an effective way? 2. Will it hurt my equipment? 3. What volume should I feed it, if I crank it to max volume will it burn out the amp? Or will it cause a fire hazard? 4. How long can I do it continuously without hurting the amp? This seems like an attrative way to do it as it means stressing the amp without waking up the neighbour and the wife. -- agentsmith System 1: SB2 and a mostly Naim system System 2: SB2 connected digitally to a Meridian F80 agentsmith's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1838 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46295 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

In my case, I went from not being able to tell between an SB2 nude to a SB2-Benchmark DAC1-Naim Nait5i. Now that I have upgraded my amps to Naim 202/200 , the difference between an SB2 and a mere half decent Pioneer Universal player is quite big to the CD player's favour. Apparently the 202/200 are differentiating the sources much more than the Nait 5i. Then again the amps may not be properly burned in yet. Not sure if they will get more or less revealing. I agree with the previous poster. It very much depend on what the rest of your system is. The Flying Inkpot http://www.inkpot.com/ This is a little different. It is a Singapore based site with reviews by volunteers. It is meant to be educational in nature and has features focusing on specific compositions. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Repost: High definition downloads
I am excited about recent development higher definition downloads. This could potentially mean that my computer gear would catch up or rise above my SACD/DVD player. Although my SB2 is problematic when it comes to decoding anything beyond 16/44.1, (I downloaded from HDTT and still have not been able to play without studdering), I can still see the poetential there. However, I just noticed that SB3 only support up to 24bit 48Khz. So my questions for the technical gurus are: 1. Are there any sonic benefits when playing 24/96 or 24/88 through the Sb3? 2. I am connected via coxial from the SB3 to a Benchmark DAC-1, If I play 24/96 or 24/88 thru the SB3, what resolution is passed thru the coaxial? 3. is it problematic for layman to transcode these high def downloads to other formats, e.g. WMA to WAV, 24/88 to 24/48 or 24/96 to 24/48? 4. Not really a question: I think high quality downloads and the Slim are match made in heaven, it would be excellent if Slim and the content provider can work together and provide SB2 or Transporter certified downloads. i.e. Tested with the gears and certified to be the highest quality possible for the gear. I just purchase and downloaded the Erick Friedman Violin Show pieces album and is experiencing drop outs on all the songs. I tried network test and it passed all the tests 100% up to the max of 5Mbps. Also tried different connectivity methods, including connecting direct Fast Ethernet 100Bbps connection same reaults. Also tried different Slimserver levels, 6.5.0, 6.5.1 and a much older version (forgot version) The songs are all dropping out at the exact same spots with all connection methods. Question to HDTT: Have these recordings been tried out on Slim's devices? Also, I read about a sampler with extracts, but cannot find it on your web site. Can you point us to the right direction? It is quite acoustic and used to be commonly used as a demo disc. Agreed with classical piano. MP3 usually makes solo piano sounds grossly distorted with sibilance. Glenn Gould's 1982 Goldberg Variations would be a nice comparison tool. Also, with his humming in the background, on a good headphone system, it sounded like someone is humming to your ears and once it made me jump while listening in the middle of the night. Also, Jazz piano like Bill Evan's Trio or Keith Jarrett would probably shows the downside of MP3.
