Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] FLAC decode - server or SB?

2008-01-10 Thread boybees

Just to make sure I understand this, If I have the flac box checked in
SlimServer server settings, file types, it means that the flacs are
being converted to wav at the server and then the wav is sent over the
wireless network to the SB3.

Is that correct?

Thanks Patrick. I'm going to stay away from the preamp volume control
for now, until I can find additional information that it's "done right"
in the manner of the regular SB3 volume control.

Seriously, your expertise is a real asset to this forum. If you would
be so kind as to answer the couple of follow-up questions I have posted
on this thread:

I promise never to bug you about volume control again!

Thanks. I have two follow up questions:

1) In another thread, we've identified the regular volume settings of
40-100 as the "safe zone", that is, the region where volume attenuation
results in loss of SNR, but no loss of information in the digital signal
itself. What is the analogous "safe zone" on the preamp volume control,
which has a total range of 0 to -63db?

2) What settings on preamp volume control will give identical
attenuation to the settings of 90, 80, and 70 on the regular volume
control?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Another volume control question

2006-10-20 Thread boybees

Slim Server 6.5.

Under the Squeezebox device settings, audio tab, you've got an option
called "preamp volume control", which attenuates output to the analog
outs only. Apparently this is to set a limit on how far you can turn up
the digital volume on Slimserver/Squeezebox remote; in other words, it
sets how loud a volume setting of '100' will be.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Second question: is the "preamp volume control" using the same method
of digital volume attenuation that is used in the regular digital
volume control? Or is it a different process, perhaps one that occurs
in the analog rather than in the digital realm.

Thanks.

Thanks. Are you aware of at what point on the volume scale it does
begin to degrade the digital signal?

Steve just to clarify one thing in your response. Is the situation
exactly the same in one box CD players as it is in two box
transport/DAC? That is, the master clock that controls spindle speed
and PLL is located in the transport circuitry, and not in the DAC
chip?

Thanks.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 12.28MHz clock in SB - what does it do?

2005-11-22 Thread boybees

At least one of the modders is removing this clock as part of his
package, presumably to eliminate any jitter associated with it.

My question: if you take this clock out, what kind of files, what bit
rate, etc. are you then NOT able listen to on the SB?
