I asked the question before in the recent biamp thread and am interested in more views/ responses. Thx DCtoDaylight for your response, feel free to elaborate here :-) A while ago I read a few of Richard Hardesty's Audio Perfectionist Journals, which I found quite interesting. In journal # 2 ('*which can be downloaded here*' (http://audioperfectionist.com/pages/freejournals.html)) he discusses the use of sub-woofers in a high-end stereo configuration and suggests that use of powered subwoofers in conjunction with a passive high-pass filter inserted between the pre-amp and power-amp (ie sub-woofer takes its feed from the same interconnects as the power amp) will "reduce intermodulation distortion in the midrange by a factor of two or more, dramatically improve the resolution of midrange and high-frequency detail, double or triple the dynamic range capability of your system without changing your amplifier or speakers and improve imaging more than you can imagine". That's a hell of a lot of improvement from something that initially seems counterintuitive. He then goes on to describe the characteristics of a sub-woofer suitable for music listening and gives the Vandersteen 2Wq a big nod of approval. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help troubleshooting SC/ Transporter
Two nights back I retired to my listening room and found that I couldn't get any sound ou of my transporter. SC looks like it's playing ie a song plays and counts down on SC's web interface but nothing is happening on the Transporter end - whilst it says now playing and indicates the track selected via the IR or web ui, te VU meters don't show any activity and there's no music. To enasure there's no problem with my preamp and speakers I connected ad DVD player via RCA, selected said channel on the preamp and the playback was fine. I've just tried a xilinx reset and that made no difference either. Running Version: 7.3.2 - 24695, firmware 73. I'm a little stumped as to what to look at next, other than to try a SB3 located elsewhere in the house to see whether that works. John Mellencamp’s 'Life, Death, Love and Freedom' has just been released with a CD and DVD. It's apparently the first ever release in the ΧΟΔΕ (CODE) format developed by T Bone Burnett and a team of engineers and purportedly "creates high-definition audio files that are virtually indistinguishable from the original master tapes. The resonance, warmth and presence that has been realized with CODE is unprecedented in the digital era." "The CODE version of Life, Death, Love and Freedom is a DVD that will come packaged with a standard CD version of the album, available at all retail outlets, at no additional cost to the consumer. The CODE disc is playable on virtually all DVD machines including stand-alone players and drives integrated into computer systems. The DVD’s content can be copied into most computer music software including iTunes and can, then, be downloaded onto personal music players such as the iPod. The standard CD is included to answer all possible compatibility questions." I bought the album and had a look at the DVD. The DVD contains 24/96 WAV files, AAC and MP3, as well as what looks like a regular DVD (presumably without video signal) layout for DVD players. Having purchased John Mellecamp's new album today I'm curious re the maximum resolution the SB3 is able to playback without hiccup. The reaon I ask is because the DVD XOΔE copy includes the tracks in 24/96 WAV. How well Homeplugs works does seem to vary depending on the house wiring. We recently moved and whereas I could drive multiple SB3s at the old place, I now struggle to drive two and get intermittent dropouts (very old house). I also find that they seem to work better in some rooms compared with others in the house. Upgrading to the 200MBPS versions at least got things to the point that i can reliably listen again. I second opaqueice's & Pat's recommendations. I own a Transporter and had XLR cables made using Belden 1800F cable with Neutrik connectors incl. gold-plated pins. Couldn't be happier and it didn't cost anywhere near that typically charged in the audiofool category. In fact after being offered $700+ Chord interconnects I offered to buy them if the store owner could detect which interconnects I was using on his equipment, but countered that he would have to give them to me if he couldn't. Like you I have a large collection and I find having all my music stored digitally has made it difficult to remember albums. Somehow it seems a visual trigger is often my preferred way of selecting something to play and I also find browsing screen after screen of albumart cumbersome when I don't feel like getting up or grappling with a wireles PDA. To get around this I right clicked and selected "open link in new tab" whilst hovering the mouse over the slimserver Albums link. A browser window opens and lists a series of album covers and album names. I printed this to PDF and then printed the PDFs on a colour printer. I switched inputs on the Transporter to a digital source using the Digital Inputs/Optical S/PDIF (TOSLINK) option so that I could have my DVD's audio going through the Transporter. Sell the kid? ;-) Just kidding. I've got the same problem - my son is going on three and I have a pair of ATC SCM100SLAT's in the lounge which also happens to be his playground. When not in use I keep mine covered with the drivers facing the wall so I can be sure he will keep his fingers, food etc. out of the drivers. It's a pain, but the reality is that for the moment I only get to listen when he and the boss are out. In your case, could you get very heavy stands and attach a retaining bracket to its surface, into which the speakers are then placed? It would mean he would have to give them a very big thump before they fell over and they definitely couldn't slide off.
