I think the salesman was referring to the ability of the SB3's DAC to
bring out the detail of the music rather than the SB3's ability to
perfectly use and process every bit making up a lossless audio file. 
Regarding the latter its bit perfect, regarding the former it's damned
good value for money, albeit there are certainly CD players and
standalone DACs out there that will outperform the SB3 hands down.

the receiver has a fairly decent dac.  1) what is your current setup
comprised of, 2) have the speakers been properly placed and 3) have you
applied any acoustic treatments to your listening room?  if the answer
to 2 and 3 is no then I wouldn't bother with a dac, same if you have a
nasty amp/preamp.

Absolutely the USB cable makes a difference. It was recently
demonstrated that a significant increase in performance can be had by
using a double-ended USB with an 0-pass filter directing the 0's to the
standard larger connector whilst the 1's are routed to the smaller USB
connector. It dramatically improved clarity of the highs and the bass
was deep and involving. This of course is because the 0's were able to
flow more freely whilst the 1's were packed tightly in single file,
reducing congestion and jitter.

I asked the question before in the recent biamp thread and am interested
in more views/ responses.  Thx DCtoDaylight for your response, feel free
to elaborate here :-)

A while ago I read a few of Richard Hardesty's Audio Perfectionist
Journals, which I found quite interesting.  In journal # 2 ('*which can
be downloaded here*'
(http://audioperfectionist.com/pages/freejournals.html)) he discusses
the use of sub-woofers in a high-end stereo configuration and suggests
that use of powered subwoofers in conjunction with a passive high-pass
filter inserted between the pre-amp and power-amp (ie sub-woofer takes
its feed from the same interconnects as the power amp) will "reduce
intermodulation distortion in the midrange by a factor of two or more,
dramatically improve the resolution of midrange and high-frequency
detail, double or triple the dynamic range capability of your system
without changing your amplifier or speakers and improve imaging more
than you can imagine".  That's a hell of a lot of improvement from
something that initially seems counterintuitive.  He then goes on to
describe the characteristics of a sub-woofer suitable for music
listening and gives the Vandersteen 2Wq a big nod of approval.

Thoughts anyone?

I wonder how many out there worrying about things such as apodising and
other "upgrades" have even gone to the trouble of ensuring their
listening area is optimally configured.  Feature mania, factor x, y, z,

Problem solved - copied mysql db to another drive, removed and
reinstalled SC (was due for 7.3.3 anyhow), copied back DB and all's

Ok, seems it's an SC problem - same result with SB3 in Lounge - on
connecting it upgraded firmware but doesn't play anything.  I suspect my
NAS' file system has popped its clogs, otherwise I'm at a complete loss.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help troubleshooting SC/ Transporter

Two nights back I retired to my listening room and found that I couldn't
get any sound ou of my transporter.  SC  looks like it's playing ie a
song plays and counts down on SC's web interface but nothing is
happening on the Transporter end - whilst it says now playing and
indicates the track selected via the IR or web ui, te VU meters don't
show any activity and there's no music.  To enasure there's no problem
with my preamp and speakers I connected ad DVD player via RCA, selected
said channel on the preamp and the playback was fine.

I've just tried a xilinx reset and that made no difference either. 
Running Version: 7.3.2 - 24695, firmware 73.

I'm a little stumped as to what to look at next, other than to try a
SB3 located elsewhere in the house to see whether that works.

Ideas/ help appreciated.

Ok, I've done quite a bit of listening today substituting my SCA2 with
Endler 12-step balanced attenuators.  Bottom line is they sound equally
good to me, so my recommendation to anyone looking at a single-input
music setup is not to bother with a preamp, get/ make yourself some
decent attenuators and you're done (at a tiny fraction of the cost).

@cliveb: how far are you able to turn down the volume via SC before
experiencing noticeable degradation?

Haven't used my Endlers for a long time.   I'll bypass the SCA2 this
weekend and do some listening.  Last time I did it there was nothing in
it so I settled for the convenience of a preamp.  Doubt I'd notice any
real differences this time around, albeit I'm in a much better room now.

On the face of it I'd agree with you, but I'm guessing what he meant was
that if you make a high quality mp3 encoding from a well-produced,
uncompressed 24/96 master then the mp3 is probably going to sound
better than the average compressed crap CD out there today that has no
dynamics, and under those circumstances I'd be inclined to agree with
him.

John Mellencamp’s 'Life, Death, Love and Freedom' has just been
released with a CD and DVD.  It's apparently the first ever release in
the ΧΟΔΕ (CODE) format developed by T Bone Burnett
and a team of engineers and purportedly "creates high-definition audio
files that are virtually indistinguishable from the original master
tapes. The resonance, warmth and presence that has been realized with
CODE is unprecedented in the digital era."

"The CODE version of Life, Death, Love and Freedom is a DVD that will
come packaged with a standard CD version of the album, available at all
retail outlets, at no additional cost to the consumer. The CODE disc is
playable on virtually all DVD machines including stand-alone players
and drives integrated into computer systems. The DVD’s content
can be copied into most computer music software including iTunes and
can, then, be downloaded onto personal music players such as the iPod.
The standard CD is included to answer all possible compatibility
questions."

I bought the album and had a look at the DVD.  The DVD contains 24/96
WAV files, AAC and MP3, as well as what looks like a regular DVD
(presumably without video signal) layout for DVD players.  As I'm in
ther process of planning a move my Transporter and ATC's have been
crated and I've had to downsample to listen on the SB3, so I was
wondering whether anyone here has bought the album and had a chance to
listen to the 24/96 tracks, and if so, would love to read their
impressions, especially if you've ripped and/or listened to the CD
version also.

Having purchased John Mellecamp's new album today I'm curious re the
maximum resolution the SB3 is able to playback without hiccup.  The
reaon I ask is because the DVD XOΔE copy includes the tracks in
24/96 WAV.  As I don't want to restrict listening to it only on my
Transporter I'm going to downsample using Wavelab and have the option
of dropping it to 24/88.2, 24/64, 24/48 etc.  Will the SB3 play back
either of 88.2 or 64?

For a long time I lusted for the ATC SCM150SL AT but settled for the
SCM100SL AT as my listening space is nowhere near big enough to
accommodate the 150s.  Both are superb and their WAF is pretty high
too.

Personally I think they're worth the peace of mind knowing you have a
good offsite backup that is not subject to the whims of operating
systems or USB drive malfunctions.  Over the years I've seen at least
two hard drives suddenly lose all data because of partition/
fat32/fat/mft/ext3 corruption when plugging them in via USB/firewire or
pc crashes.  I would never be comfortable knowing m only backup is a 2nd
copy on another hard drive(s) connected via usb or other means.  By the
time you consider the cost of 750 or TB drives fr backup, an LTO
solution is only marginally more expensive, and gives you the ability
to properly backup all your other data too.

software, make a full backup and separate incremental backups and keep

How well Homeplugs works does seem to vary depending on the house
wiring.  We recently moved and whereas I could drive multiple SB3s at
the old place, I now struggle to drive two and get intermittent
dropouts (very old house).  I also find that they seem to work better
in some rooms compared with others in the house.  Upgrading to the
200MBPS versions at least got things to the point that i can reliably
listen again.  I've not tried to mix the 85/200s, though I'm surprised
to hear they won't talk to one another.

This thread has been a great way to see what audio equipment people have
in their homes.   What has come as a bit of a surprise to me is that so
many of us (myself included) seem to be happy to spend a fortune on our
hi-fi equipment, only to house it in less than desirable surrounds. 
Little wonder our significant others often have little time, tolerance
or interest in our pursuit...I wonder how many of us have heard
something along the lines of "gee honey, it sounds great, but it looks
like sh1t..."?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Quad 909 Stereo Amp & 99 Pre Amp

In the process of moving home and was reminded I have two 909s and a 99
preamp sitting in their original boxes for over two years now, brand
new and unopened - long story, but what might they be worth today?  I
doubt I'll ever get around to using them unless they end up in a
holiday house or something so I was thinking of selling them and
purchasing a decent surround sound amp for a home theater and chipping
the change in toward speakers for same.

I second opaqueice's & Pat's recommendations.  I own a Transporter and
had XLR cables made using Belden 1800F cable with Neutrik connectors
incl. gold-plated pins.  Couldn't be happier and it didn't cost
anywhere near that typically charged in the audiofool category.  In
fact after being offered $700+ Chord interconnects I offered to buy
them if the store owner could detect which interconnects I was using on
his equipment, but countered that he would have to give them to me if he
couldn't.  No prizes for guessing he didn't put his money where his
mouth was.

interesting observation seeing as the flac is decoded to the bit
perfect original pcm wav and then passed through the same dac as any
wav file would.  it's like arguing that a document stored in a zip
archive and then unzipped is not a bit perfect copy of the original.

Truth be told I don't think it is that hard at all.  Long before I'd
heard of the Squeezebox I was ripping my CDs to WAV using Wavelab and
creating my own CD based compilations.  I later started keeping the
ripped audio on my PC and then discovered FLAC (mp3 was never an option
for anything but my iPod).  It was through this process that I started
searching for a digital library with means of playing the audio without
having to go through the PC sound card.  A little Googling, some reading
of these forums and my mind was made up.  I've never looked back.

All you need to have digital music is some basic knowledge/
understanding and some freeware tools: eac/ grip, FLAC, mp3tag &
slimserver.  Now if only mp3tag had a native Linux version I could shut
down my win pc forever.

Your statement "I-Tunes is the format" coupled with your intention to
write a review concerns me because I get the sense you may be going
into this without a full understanding of digital audio formats. 
iTunes default audio format is LOSSY meaning if you are using iTunes
ripped audio you are not dealing with the original source as you would
be playing a CD via your regular transport.

Pay attention to the tips others have provided in this thread to ensure
you really are comparing apples to apples otherwise your review will
amount to nothing more than misinformation.  I don't mean for this to
be a personal attack, I just want to be sure that when you pen your
review it is written having carried out a like comparison, however
subjective it may ultimately be.  If you have questions don't hesitate
to ask, there are many people here (as you've already seen) who are
more than willing to assist.

I was in Singapore last week and had one in my hand, ready to pay until
the Nokia store informed me they don't accept Amex.  It was round about
then I started wondering whether the N800 is subject to the same
quality issues as the last three Nokia phones I've had.  I handed it
back to the assistant and left empty handed.

Whilst I like the device, I think I'm going to wait for others to make
the same and then reconsider my options.  I hate the thought of
dropping $400 only to have the device die inside of 18 months, out of
warranty.  Not saying it would happen, but my experience with their
recent phones does not bode well.

You will need to configure slimserver to identify yopur album art.  In
my case all albums have their own folder and each folder contrains a
200x200 cover art file called folder.jpg.  Slimserver is configured to
treat this file as the cover art.  If you've previously built your
library without cover art you will need to rescan it in slimserver to
detect and incorporate the cover art.

Following that, once you've done the right click thing, you should be
able to choose (through a control near the top right of your screen)
whether you want to browse including cover art or a text only listing.

Another way of getting to the same place is to click through on Albums,
set the browse to cover art and then right click/ open in new window on
the first entry in slimserver's navigation aid i.e. the "1 2 3 4 A B C
D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z" on the top left of the
screen.


I had to browse through the alphabet and generate around 20 PDF files,
but it was simple and has definitely been worthwhile.  Now I can just
point to the file if they want to listen to something.

As azinck3 points out a barcode scanner plugin is already in existence
- so you're in luck.

Like you I have a large collection and I find having all my music
stored digitally has made it difficult to remember albums.  Somehow it
seems a visual trigger is often my preferred way of selecting something
to play and I also find browsing screen after screen of albumart
cumbersome when I don't feel like getting up or grappling with a
wireles PDA.

To get around this I right clicked and selected "open link in new tab"
whilst hovering the mouse over the slimserver Albums link.  A browser
window opens and lists a series of album covers and album names.  I
printed this to PDF and then printed the PDFs on a colour printer.  I
now have a file with all my album covers printed so I can page through
it and select albums the way I used to when I still had the CDs readily
available.

This should be a pretty easy to deal with using either a network
enabled DVD player or a purpose built PVR type PC.  If you Google the
topic I'm sure you will find many howto's on this topic.  Storing DVDs
on a NAS would be child's play, albeit strictly speaking illegal in
most jurisdictions.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Switchin between Transporter inputs

I switched inputs on the Transporter to a digital source using the
Digital Inputs/Optical S/PDIF (TOSLINK) option so that I could have  my
DVD's audio going through the Transporter.  Any idea how to get the
Transporter output back to balanced analogue?

assuming you value your original CDs you could always make a copy onto
CD-R and then scratch the CD-R.

Even easier, install EAC and it will tell you during the configuration
routine whether or not your drive supports C2

What planet are these guys on?  These statements amount to nothing more
than a load of uninformed rubbish!  If their so called experts had
understood or bothered to research the topic properly they would have
1) realized there is no "compromise" in lossless audio compression, and
2) there is no difference in "quality" of lossless compression
regardless of the encoding/compression algorithm.

Funny also that FLAC isn't even mentioned - are these guys living under
a rock, endorsed by Apple?

Clearly, this is a magazine not intended for anyone capable of thinking
for themselves, I'd even go so far as to label those articles
irresponsible journalism.

Just kidding.  I've got the same problem - my son is going on three and
I have a pair of ATC SCM100SLAT's in the lounge which also happens to be
his playground.  When not in use I keep mine covered with the drivers

out of the drivers.  It's a pain, but  the reality is that for the
moment I only get to listen when he and the boss are out.

In your case, could you get very heavy stands and attach a retaining
bracket to its surface, into which the speakers are then placed?  It
would mean he would have to give them a very big thump before they fell
over and they definitely couldn't slide off.

Alternatively, consider putting them on a shelf or something similar
and settle in for crappy sound for the next 18 months or so.
