The Quads are are too reaviling. If you listen to radio/mp3`s in office. Some songs are good though, but you have to listen to some bad ones, unfortunately. And fan. If a noicy computer is in the listening room it has an audible effect when playing at low volum... I have an air turbulence noice with the fan that are driving air out of the box.Not very high though, but i want to kill it. Without this fan the computer whould be almost dead silent. Is this fan imprtant. I want to cut the wire. I have read that the CPU plug/psu on the motherboard(not he on at the rear of the box) makes more noice feeding millions of transistors. Millions of transistors tapping up and down. More expensive motherboard > usally more quality mother board components(silent). I dont think it is a problem with todays computers/SB/DAC/soundcards. If your point is right you are not missing something. I do not have the gift to remember everything i read. Thats why i am discussing it(digital vs analog volum) here in this fourm whre there are peaple with more education, training. Using "my" calculator. Multiply 16bit decimal value 65535 with 0,35(%error) and converting it back to binary it only affect the last bit. Just likes as you explained. The higher wordlength and sample rate we have the less potential error distortion we get, when reproducing analog audio. If the uppsampling device is very good, or the audio line are correctly implemented - computer - software - dac - dac - amp - speakers. If you add wordlength and sample rate it can couse to much peak and distortion to treble and bass. Potentially. Every time we are using digital volumecontrol, i quote from the guide(dont know if it is allowed?): To apply gain or attenuation to a digital audio signal, a multiplication is performed on each digital sample that collectively create the digital audio signal. If we use 24bit/96khz in todays audio, we stays within the potential of 0,5% error, presumably. And only the last digit will be affected. But, if that is not trough ? I dont know. Peaple cant hear no difference. Transporter use digital volume(it must be good). I will use the analog volume and recommend the other users in this apartment to also use analog volumecontrol later. It is nice to know that software player - SB3 - is at 100% volum. It have being interesting and fun to discuss. -- eiret eiret's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11521 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38233 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If you have time, please read trough this section of this guide : Digital volumecontrols. http://extra.benchmarkmedia.com/wiki/index.php/Digital_volume_control A little quote form the guide :Disasterous distortion can potentially arise when a digital volume control is implemented Binary numbers, just like decimal numbers, do not always multiply and divide evenly. There are often remainders - extra digits that are a result of the multiplication. -- eiret eiret's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11521 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38233 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I am not an audiophile, i post here anyway. Experts recommend analog volum control and digital volum set to 100%. You are all agree about that i think. Since you cant hear any decrease in audio quality when using digital volume compare to analog volum control, i think we are using 24 or 16 bit all the time(16/24bit recording). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Empirical Audio Pace-Car Reclocker
Interesting test/article. This Steven Nudget(Emperica Audio) coming from Intel and silicon valley has knowledge about dac`s, circuits, opamps. No doubt. Same with the engineers at BenchmarkMedia. They are on an collision course, maybe. They both want to engineer good dac`s, but Steven Nudget goes for uppsampling on the computer and Benchmark engineers goes for uppsampling natively in their dac`s. Benchmark DA1 USB does completely seperate the data from the clock. No audible jitter. The digital part of the convert uppsamples to 110khz and the analog part downsamples to an audible range. Dont know the samplerate ? http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.mpl?forum=digital&n=94575 Benchmark recommends to remove all dsp plugins and other plugins from foobar to eliminate loss in word lengt- bith depth - sample rate. If our goal is to hear as exact as we can, what the producer engineers produced on the cd. Bitperfect. They clame that the Benchmark DAC1 USB dont have any jitter at all and the audio will sound the same coming from harddrive, cd player, dvd player connected to Benchmark DAC1 USB. So why use software to uppsample in the computer. Using CPU and RAM resources when the Benchmark do it so well. http://extra.benchmarkmedia.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page Or maybe the Empirical Audios software uppsampling on the computer is the best way ? The best way to decide would be to borrow products from Slim Devides, Benchmark, Empirical and have our own test in oour own audio set up. But that`s not easy to succed. Therefore it is fun and useful to read reviews and forums. -- eiret eiret's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11521 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37557 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Windows VOLUME
I was in properties sound/sound devices. Everything related to volume is set to max/best. I must say that i use softsqueeze when using Softsqueeze when using Squeezebox. Havent tried to implement Winamp or other in Slimserver yet. Using Winamp or Windows mediaplayer throug M - audio revolution 7.1 soundcard when whatcing movies and just tried some cd`s. Windows sound properties have found the soundcard. It is just that the sound is mouch higher in Winamp in the other softwareplayers. Looks like hte soundcard and Winamp are getting more gain than souncard and Windows mediaplayer. I dont know much about soundcodecs but here are they i have in controlpanel - properties sounddiveces - hardware - soundcodecs - properties - properties again. If you click on one codec and then properties, you get the choise to make the marked codec priority from 1 - 12. Which of them shoud the 1. priority. +---+ |Filename: coded.jpg| |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3136| +---+ -- eiret eiret's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11521 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37580 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Windows VOLUME
Another strange thing. Not using Squeezebox Slimserver. Windows Meiaplayer lost volumepowwer. Like in decrease of how high i can turn the volume knob ---(in windows mediaplayer). Active monitors volume knob are turned to 50%. To get high volume, like that neighbours dont like, not really that high, but high enough to dance. I have to turn the volume knob in Windows Mediaplayer to 100%. Compare to before, when i hade to just turn the volume knob to about 40%. An decrease in 60%. SAME SETTINGS, when using WINAMP, i have to turn the volumeknob 20% to reach really loud volume. Squeezebox - Softsqueeze Slimserver player are a little to slow getting volume higts too, compare to WINAMP. Whit actve monitors turned to 50% i hav to turn volum knob in softsqueeze to 90%. I dont think this is normal compared to Winamp whre i have to stop at 30 - 40%. Looks like Winamp gets allmosst all the volume gain from windows. Anybody that have any ideas ow how to fix this, so Squeezebox, WinsowsMedia player can get the same volume gain as Winamp ? -- eiret eiret's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11521 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37580 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SqueezeBox + computer + QUAD 12L Active + DAC
I have a few questions, but i am not an audiophile high - end user or expert. So the questions maybe appear stupid. Anyway, i will be wery pleased if you take your time and answer. I am considering a purschase of Quad 12L Active studio monitors http://www.whats-new-at-totallywired.com/march2007news.html. When they comes to dealer in Norway. I know, they are primary ment for use in music - recording not audiophile lissening. I will listen to them connected to my computer first. The setup will be computer - Squeezebox - 12L`s ative - possibly with an external DAC in the future in this line of setup. Computer Squeezebox 12L`s active. Where shoud the external DAC be placed ? I think computer - Squeezebox - (here)DAC - 12L`s active. If i`m wrong, make it rihgt for me please. In this case of set up, will the computer soundcards quatilty and DAC`s have an impact of the sound ? Will the computers soundcard just be a transporter of audio bits. Soundcard is M - audio revolution 7.1 with only mini jack`s, but have digital out SP/DIF (or is it coaxil out ?). http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Revolution71-main.html Will a card like M - audiphile 24/192 give better result in a audophile matter ? http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile192-main.html Is digital out the same as SP/DIF ? If so, when using this SP/DIF connection, do i bypass the soundcards DAC`s ? Maybe thats the point, if my goal is to acheive best possible stereo audio with use of extarnal DAC`s and Squeezebox with this equipment? Try to correct me if i`m wrong. How do i connect this gear ? Then, if SP/DIF bypasses DAC`s, do i have to use analog outs from the external DAC`s connected directelly to the 12L`s active ? Is it DAC`s in amplifiers ? If it is, can i use the DAC`s on the 12L`s active amplifier instead of an external DAC ? Will an external DAC give better audio resolution ? Is it possible to get use of several DAC`s for example 2 - 3 ? Can you help us providing a guide on how to connect computer - Squeezebox - extarnal DAC - 12L active`s ? What kind of cables form soundcard - Squeezebox - external DAC - 12L active`s. What kind of cable from what kind of output/input. Do only need a guide on how to connect this gear. Software and drivers i will install quite well, i think. What kind of mods to Squeezebox 3 do you suggest, with this gear ? After maybe just reading spesifications of this gear do you think it will be better audo resolutions, after modding SB3 and with use of external DAC ? What kind of external DAC do you suggest ? Can I use MHdt Labs Paradisea + when I dont have tube amplifier ? Do I have to go for MHT Labs Constantine ? First I have to purschase the 12L active and the Squeezebox. Then I have to save some money 3 4 mounts before I purschase a DAC. And some money saving again so i can afford a mod on the Squeezebox. I am living alone with my 15 years old son and sometimes some of his friends in the same 25 squaremeter room. So we both need a decent sound since we have to listen to each others music taste either we will or not. But we like the same music pretty often. If the sound is okay we both will have a nice time. Me and my son will be wery pleased for answers to these questions.
