Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to mono L & R balanced outputs

2010-05-26 Thread gsawdy

Thank you both,

The Audiogon thread does indeed apply. And it is exactly what I
suspected. I want to use a discontinued Dynaudio sub with the
Transporter whose balanced outputs go to the powered dynaudio BM5a's.

The Transporter's RCA's go to a whole house audio system. I'm not sure
if the RCA's were dedicated to the sub, bridged and run to the sub the
volume adjustment would track together with the XLR outs anyway.

The sub has a lowpass filter-so I don't need or want a crossover. The
only option that I can think of is to use the sub for only the very
lowest frequencies and assume they are equally recorded on both
channels. If that is a good asumption then I could run just one channel
to the sub using a balanced "Y" connector. I suspect this is why the
amp is discontinued. Modern Dyna subs accept both L & R and combine
them internally after some sort of buffer stage so the whole system
doesn't become mono.

What do you think of the one channel only to sub idea?

George

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to mono L & R balanced outputs

2010-05-26 Thread gsawdy

Hi All,

I want to add a used sub to my Dyna BM5a's. The sub has a 3-pin XLR
input and the source has two 3-pin XLR (L & R) outputs. I doubt it is
as simple as purchasing three xlr "Y" connection cables. It seems to
me that would cause the whole system to see mono--not what I want.

Economy is the big issue here, so what would be the cheapest way to do
this?

TIA, George

Yes, If someone brings a CD over for a listen or the kids want to play
a CD downstairs, then this would be the simplest and quickest solution.
Strictly spur of the moment.

I found that BlueJeans Cables has a toslink cable that is $38 for 35'
It is plastic, not glass, but they claim it tests perfect for runs over

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 35 to 40 foot optical cable

2009-12-16 Thread gsawdy

I need to run a 35-40' digital optical cable from the digital out of a
cd player to the input of the Transporter in another room. The rooms
are adjacent so the cd player provides an input for the Transporter.

I assume I need glass fiber cable, not plastic. Can anyone suggest a
reasonable source that won't break the bank. I'd like there to be good,
sturdy connectors included.

Okay, I thought I needed to keep it above 80-90% to avoid noticable
effects on the sound quality. Actually the -10 setting on the speakers
would cut the vol by more than the Aphex at lowest output. I don't need
balanced for rf problems or long runs, just the speakers are designed
for that.

Ok, I think I understand but I thought digital noise was very obvious.
By using digital volume control, when one "overdoes" it what does the
sound, sound like? (My appologies for the crappy sentence but you get
the idea, hopefully. VBG) I have in mind something like the break up
of a digital TV signal---maybe it's much more subtle???

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone with experience using APHEX 124a?

2008-12-26 Thread gsawdy

o recall someone whose signature listed one of these. But who???

I want to use this to do two tasks. The first is to take the
unbalanced RCA output of the SB3 and convert it to balanced to feed
powered monitors. The second is to use it to set the upper limit of
the output going to the monitors and then use the SB3's remote to
control the volume downward from there.

My questions are about the volume controls. They are labelled Channel
1 and Channel 2. Does each knob control both the right and left
channels going one direction (i.e., bal to unbal and then unbal to
bal)?

And is the range (from the spec sheet:"Balanced Output Level +4dBm
Front panel adjustable ± 6dB, peak +25dBm") sufficient to do what I
want? The speakers can be set for 4, 0, or -10.

Obviously from the questions, I'm not a pro at this so any insights
will be appreciated.

I have two pair of the BM5a's and no hiss at all. Maybe you should
check further up the line toward the source or return the speakers.

On another note I have listened for a week to the BM6a MkII and I'd
suggest if you are going to spend the extra $ over the BM5a that you
check out the BM12a. I have not heard them but I was underwhelmed by
the BM6a MkII for the extra money--very subtly better than the BM5a but
not nearly enough to justify the extra expense.

As always, YMMV

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SliMP3 audio quality

2008-10-15 Thread gsawdy

Hi All,

I'm posting this question here because I thought this group might be
best able to answer.
I want to mount a squeeze flush to the wall and the SliMP3 seems like
the best choice. It is small and it appears that the face plate
extends beyond the box that would be recessed into the wall--thus a
nice bazel to cover the raw plaster edges of the hole. It really needs
to be flush with the wall as the wall is beside a narrow aisle beside
the bed--I don't want anything to catch on it in the dark if one gets
up.

Now the $64,000 questionhaving never even seen one of
thesewould the sound quality be lower than the SB3? The
disadvantage of the SB3 is creating a neat, simple recessed mounting.
I have searched the forums for recessed/wall mounts but have not found
any comments as to the audio and display quality/differences. Reading
the comparisons in the Wiki doesn't tell me anything (that I understand
VBG).

Thanks for any suggestions re advantages/disadvantages of the SliMP3,

George

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best digital output... Coax or Tos?

2008-08-02 Thread gsawdy

Here's two questions which are somewhat related to this issue.
Are shorter toslink cables "better" than longer? I'm talking in the
range of 1' to 1 meter, but a general answer for longer length would be
of interest.
And in my case whether it's toslink or coax it could be as short as 9"
assuming there are no restrictions on the bending radius. Does anyone
know if there is some minimum radius to bends for optic cable?
I bought the tools to terminate coax cables just so I didn't have extra
length hanging around picking up rf. I haven't investigated if
terminating toslink is DIY or not.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] digital is digital OR NOT

2008-07-22 Thread gsawdy

Can folks on this board explain how this review's claim about the
digital out of a modded and non-modded Duet be true. Here is a link to
the review:
http://www.computeraudiophile.com/bolder_cable_company_squeezebox_duet_review

The parts that I find puzzeling are:
" I connected the stock SB Duet and the Bolder Cable modified SB Duet
to my system via coax digital out from the SB Duets into a Benchmark
DAC1 PRE. Using my MacBook Pro music server I served nothing but
uncompressed AIFFs to the two boxes. I did connect the modified Duet to
a Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC briefly to insure bit perfect digital
output. It was nice to get visual confirmation, that the stream was bit
perfect, by illuminating the HDCD indicator on the Alpha DAC whenever I
played an HDCD track."
This part I think I understand. The duet can't take advantage of HDCD
coding but will pass that info along in its digital outs. Thus bit
perfect! Right?

and then:
"What really set the Bolder Duet apart from the stock Duet was its
analog performance. I must clarify this statement by noting the digital
output through a good DAC is far better than the analog output. But the
difference between the stock and modded Duet is less pronounced when
listening via the digital outputs."

"...less pronounced ...via the digital..." Is this possible? If the
digital outputs are bit perfect from both the stock and modded then
they should sound the same via the Benchmark external DAC. Or is my
understanding flawed? The only explanation that I can think MIGHT be
relevant is if the stock had much higher jitter--so much higher that
the Benchmark couldn't correct it. Seems unlikely to me but maybe some
one can explain.

Of course one has to doubt any of this would stand the test of a DBT,
but I am curious to know if there could be some basis in theory.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Question for Sean

2008-07-02 Thread gsawdy

I want to direct the output from the Transporter to two different
systems. I know you have said one can Y the RCA outputs with no
problems. I have a choice of using either balanced or unbalanced to
either system so I'm wondering if Y-ing the balanced would be
preferrable over the Y-ed RCA or if sending bal to one and unbal to the
other would be the best. My totally uninformed guess would be that the
bal and unbal combo would be better, but that is just a guess. Is
there any rational reason to prefer one of the three?

One system is the primar listening space/living room and the other
system is for the kitchen and outdoor areas. Whatever is playing in
one area can be heard in the other, hence a single source. I don't
believe that balanced would be required for either system to avoid
interference.

Thanks

What are you comparing?

Or

2. Are you saying that playing softsqueeze via the Hammerfall alone is

how the softsqueeze through a very good sound card compared to the

Hope I'm making myself understandable.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] CD Player as DAC recommendation?

2008-02-25 Thread gsawdy

I have been looking into pro DACs. My concerns are with a whole house
system, but if you are thinking of Lynx cards you might want to
consider the EMU 1616m (external) or the 1212m (internal).
http://www.emu.com/products/category.asp?category=505

I'm not disputing that the Lynx are top notch but these are equivalent
or very close and a lot cheaper. You might want to check on ebay also
for both the EMU and Lynx. Pros seem to buy and sell a lot.

Here is a review of the 1616m with comparisons to the Lynx Two.

Good Luck with your search.
George

Ths SBC may not tell the device what to do, but doesn't it require the
device to receive the RF signal and transmit it to SqueezeCenter? This
is a question as I'm confused as to how it works. Given this
discription of the SBC, can someone please explain and compare how the
SBC is different from using the PSP or Nokia 800? Are all the same
speed? I have neither but I think the Nokia/PSP interfaces have an
alphabet screen.

Thanks, George

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] B&W 802D Speakers. Tempted.

2008-01-30 Thread gsawdy

You may have already considered unbox speakersBut if you haven't,
you should definitely try to listen to the Martin-Logan Summits. I
would also suggest you try to find a local owner of the Orions.
http://www.linkwitzlab.com/orion_us.htm
You can sign up and post a request to audition on the Orion User Group
Board: http://orion.quicksytes.com/viewforum.php?f=1
I am currently building a pair of the Orion/Thors and expecting this
will be my last speaker.

Happy searching. George
