No problem. Actually, as one who for a long time subscribed to the idea
that the best preamp is no preamp, I was surprised that either the
DSPeaker alone or the DSPeaker plus Benchmark DAC sounded inferior to
the (inexpensive) Little Dot Mk III, later replaced with the Mk9. In
spite of which, when placed *after* DAC and preamp, the DSPeaker appears
to be quite transparent to my ears, as you note, even though it has to
perform both an AD as well as a DA conversion. Anyway, the DSPeaker
still performs one preamp function, that of controlling channel balance,
as the Little Dot has no balance knob.

Hello Rick:

Here is how my connections are set up: DAC RCA out to preamp RCA in;
preamp RCA out to DSPeaker RCA in; DSPeaker XLR out to amp XLR in;
DSPeaker RCA out to sub RCA in. For quite a while I was using the
Benchmark as both a DAC and preamp, with the DAC XLR out to DSpeaker XLR
in. It was excellent too, but I found by chance (while testing some
Sennheiser D800 headphones with the Little Dot Mk III amp) that the
Little Dot in the chain resulted in a tad more lifelike sound. Either
way, with the DSPeaker just ahead of the amp, it controls both my
speakers and sub.

The cable that came with the mike is 16 feet long.

Hope this is the information you wanted.

Best,

Guido F.

Hi Rick:

My experience with the DSPeaker AntiMode Dual Core had been very
positive in my former (largish) Maryland listening room. But I found it
absolutely essential in my current (small) California room. It took
about two years of measurements plus trial and error to fine tune
equipment and room, but it could not have been done without the
DSPeaker. Previously, I had the 8033 model, for sub only, and though it
was useful, it did not even approach the versatility of the Dual Core.

Best regards,

Guido F.

I'm not sure the issue is related to attenuator transparency. Recently,
I changed from 10dB to 20dB attenuator jumpers on my DAC2 and the result
has been an increase in clarity and lifelike quality of the sound. I
suspect the sound transformation you experienced (as well as the
improvement I noticed) are simply due to better synergy between the new
attenuator values and the amp specs.

But be that as it may, it seems clear that experimenting with different
attenuator values can yield an even better sound quality than the
factory setting.

+1!

If there is one thing I've learned in more than 50 years of audiophilia,
it's that although specs, reviews, and recommendations are useful
starting points, one's system, room, musical tastes, and sound
preferences ultimately are what determines the value of a choice or an
upgrade.

Personally, I subscribe to the idea that the best preamp is no preamp.
Yet, in my main system I prefer the sound presentation with my preamp in
the chain (see sig) albeit in passive mode and with the gain set to max
over feeding my amp straight from my DSPeaker DAC/EQ. (The volume
control in the latter seems more transparent than that in my preamp.)

Best luck!

Excessively close miking has been a problem in some classical and jazz
recordings, but if I understand this correctly, it's a different issue
from that of the loudness wars. Just downloaded Mozart's clarinet and
horn quintets with the old city quartet +, which is a bad example of
wonderfully clear but horribly closed miking, in the most glaring 24/96
fashion. This is not new in chamber music, as shown by most recordings
emanating from the old Philips studio of La Chaux de Fonds, the greatest
performances marred by the poorest of microphone choices. The old
Quartetto Italiano recordings come to mind.

In general, though, jazz and classical recordings are mostly immune from
the excesses of compression that are so prevalent in pop music.

This is good advice. But digital room correction in the bass region can
also make a significant difference in mitigating room modes that room
treatments may tame only at substantial cost and with considerable
spousal disapproval.

Yes. But it does not have to be an either or proposition. It may be a
bit of both.

For me, enjoyment of recorded music starts with a good performance that
is well recorded. If either is poor, enjoyment is compromised. Excellent
equipment, as opposed to an average car radio, will only bring out the
deficiencies in performance, recording, or both. Unfortunately, as the
late J. Gordon Holt used to say, often "the better the performance, the
worse the recording, and vice versa." That maybe too acerbic a
judgement, but we're all familiar with examples where it holds true.

I have myself taken a few bad recordings to a high-end shop (where I
bought my speakers) and listened through mega-buck systems, only to
realize that they sounded no better than they did at home. That said,
the same recording sound at least passable through my AKG 701 system in
my bedroom (see below), which tends to roll off both frequency extremes
and is thus less 'revealing.'

As for realism, the element that has made a significant difference has
been the fine-tuning of my sub, achieved in part with the addition of a
DSPeaker AntiMode Dual core DAC/EQ device to control for room modes. I
tuned the sub's crossover and level not by listening to the bass per se,
but by finding the setting at which the soundstage starts to be
noticeably more three-dimensional. At that point the bass foundation is
also automatically adequate -- at least in my system.

It's been a lot of fun getting there. I wish you a satisfying journey as
well!

Hard to tell from the information provided.

However, my gut feeling is that your equipment is just fine. Start
listening to well-recorded FLACs of at least 16/44.1 resolution. I
suspect that would make you happier than throwing money at "better"
equipment. But I may be wrong . . .

provides automatic control of room modes in the bass region and a

Thanks for the information.

I recently got a DSPeaker Anti Mode Dual Core, which does room

Thank you for this explanation. When I get a chance I'll try the same

Restarted squeezeplay with above command, which returned the following:

I have done extensive comparisons of EDO 0.6 and 0.7 and for the most
part agree with your impressions.

For me and with my system, EDO 0.6 + TT3.0 + SBGK's settings with buffer
at 9 and period count 16 gives the best sound. By "best" I mean
sound that is well balanced across the frequency range, detailed but
rich, without too hot a treble, engaging and easy to listen to for hours
a time. Quite the high-end performance from a <$300 device!

I appreciate Triode's skepticism about the improbability of the slight
changes in the jive_alsa file having any sound consequences. His are
powerful reasons. Still, I find it interesting that some of us seem
(underline "seem") to experience different sound presentations. Placebo?
Expectation bias? Maybe. Maybe not.

I listen with Toslink out into my DAC, not USB.

Not in my case either.

I'm using EDO+TT3.0+SBGK's settings, with excellent results.

Thanks very much for your thorough explanation. I'm not able to follow
it in its entirety, but I think it's fascinating. Especially since your
intended goal was clearly not to tweak the sound but to effect streaming
of higher def files.

And also many thanks for all your work. Those of us who are
non-technical end users are indebted to folks like you, who do the heavy
lifting for the rest of us.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Triode's USB 24/192 plug in - sound quality impressions

2012-04-21 Thread guidof

For the last few days, I've been listening to my main system (see sig
below) with EDO+TT3.0+buffer=2+SBGK's priorities of 03-25-12.

My impression is that there is an improvement in sound over the
SBT+TT3.0 alone, very much along the lines of the improvements from
plain SBT to TT2.0 and 3.0. More realistic tonal balance, better S/N
ratio (blacker blacks), more detail more easily perceived, more
three-dimensional and airy sound stage.

The improvements are fairly subtle, but easily perceived upon listening
to familiar recordings of a wide variety of music -- at least to my ears
and on my main system.

Of course, I have no way to attribute these impressions to any one of
the above mods. But I'm grateful for the combined results and happy to
post them in reply to the OP's request.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0

2012-03-26 Thread guidof

@SBGK:

Thanks for sharing your settings (posts #1817 & 1833).

My first impression, after trying both, is one of more defined details
and more sharply outlined individual instruments and singers, resulting
in better imaging and somewhat deeper soundstage.

The overall result is that of a more believable and involving musical
presentation.

However, in my main system, 1833 seems to be excessively tilted up in
the treble. Not so in my headphone rig. For now, and to do some more
extended listening, I'll run 1817 and will report back on any further
impressions.

+1!

As a player into an external DAC the Touch is an excellent platform,
capable of delivering superb sound.

Even when used with its own internal DAC, it ain't chopped liver, by
any means.

And for the money, it's a bargain to boot.

Apparently, the NAD supports audio sample rates only up to 48/16,
according to the NAD site. And it has no display. The SBT supports
rates up to 96/24 and has a display.

Personally, I found integrating a sub with main speakers is a rather
frustrating journey.

In the end, and in my room/system, the best result has come from NOT
trying for "massage." Instead, I systematically tried a variety of gain
settings at the minimum crossover (30Hz), then again at a slightly
higher crossover. I focused not so much on listening for bass, but
rather for correct timbres and credible soundstage. I found the
DSpeaker (see sig) processor to be helpful in correcting for room
modes. When I finally got piano music to sound close to that coming
from a real piano, I stopped.

In my room, the best sub location is on the centerline, about two feet
farther away than the main speakers.

Keep trying! Patience has it's rewards!

To the extent that any priority settings provide any benefits, these
are probably dependent on your system, your expectations re: sound
quality, and the kind of music you listen to. So, there really is no
short cut. Try a few, and stick with one you like best.

Happy listening!

Works fine on my iPad. No steep learning curve whatsoever.

Yes, it saves going up and down the stairs every time one needs to make

If all of your music will ever be enjoyed via Spotify, you will
probably be happy with the Touch's own internal DAC and an amplifier
with volume controls (no preamp).

However, if you plan to listen to CD rips, downloaded CDs, or HD files,
then you might consider a good external DAC and a preamp.

My own experience with preamps include a simple stepped-resistor
attenuator and a buffered preamp, both of my own construction, as well
as the Adcom and C-J in my signature. Note that the Adcom can be
operated both as a full-function preamp or as a simple volume
attenuator.

With all of these, the Adcom operated as a full-function preamp has the
most convincing presentation of dynamics that I have heard in my system,
thus resulting in the most realistic sound quality. By comparison, the
simple volume attenuators produce sound that is just a bit too "polite"
to my ears, failing to convey all the nuances and engagement of the
music.

Of course, as always, others' experiences may be different.

Happy listening to your new Touch!

Passionato's prices were very good, but their downloads were (are?)
often of quality inferior to CD rips. I did let them know my
dissatisfaction, but in the end, seeing no improvement, I stopped
buying from them for this reason.

If you get access denied, it would appear that either the IP address is
incorrect, the transfer protocol is incorrect, or the remote login in
the Touch is not enabled. Everything OK with your network, router,

Hmm . . .

Forgot to ask: is music playing through your Touch? If so, the problem
should not have anything to do with HD or computer. But it's worth a
try with a different PC.

Good luck!

There is no problem with either TT3.0 version, as far as I know.

Try using WinSCP instead of PuTTY, and remember to check the SCP box
for transfer protocol.

If this does not work, please report all the steps you have taken prior

IME Phil's advice is very good. I tried both digital and Toslink and in
my system Toslink is clearly superior.

The Toslink I use is a glass cable made by Lifatec ($60.00), which
gives me excellent results. Among the moderately priced digital cables
I tried, one made by Emotiva came at least close to the Toslink, but
did not match it in terms of soundstage clarity and openness as well as
noise suppression.

Enjoy your Touch -- and the music!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How low is low?

2012-02-14 Thread guidof

IME it all depends on the low frequency extension of your main speakers
AND the careful matching of that to the sub's crossover.

It also helps to have a way of taming LF room modes, either by bass
traps or DSP.

If your sub's crossover is set sufficiently low (30-40Hz, depending on
slope), one sub should work just fine.

What I have is the CA 840C, which is a CD player/DAC. It's an excellent
unit, IMO. I have no experience with CA amps. If you find your sound is
a bit on the lean side, you may want to consider adding a good
subwoofer.

In my system, I did not detect any thinning as a result of installing
TT3.0. On the contrary, I had to reduce my sub's volume to maintain
tonal balance.

Trying SBT and TT3.0 in your HT seems like a good idea.

Good listening!

Exactly.

Sometimes the same person has different priorities in different parts
of the same house. See my sig. One system with, one system without
external DAC. Both with TT3.0.

Each system delivers very satisfying, though different, sound.

I can confirm that CA 840C is a great DAC with apparently excellent
jitter rejection.

Nevertheless, TT3.0 has improved even the SQ delivered by this DAC in
my main system.

As has been suggested, it's easy enough to try it in your system and
decide on that basis.

Interesting point, but I'm afraid I don't have an answer.

Thanks very much for your detailed post.

On the ART Website there is no information about bitrate output.

One of the reviews on Amazon states: "A/D & D/A: 16 bit, 44.1kHz or
48kHz, USB selectable."

Although I tend to agree that >16 bits is overkill for listening to
files converted from LPs, I would like to have the option to record at
24 bits in case any postprocessing is needed.

Do you know if 16 bits is max. with the ART unit?

I would probably prefer using some sort of USB phono preamp with
internal ADC rather than a system similar to the one Phil used.

Consequently, I'm looking for users' experiences with USB interfaces
such as the *ART* USBPhonoPlus v2, *NAD* PP3i, or *Pro-Ject* Phono Box
II USB Phono Preamp.

Also, VinylStudio has been suggested as one of the best software
solutions for this purpose. Your experience with this or others?

Ease of operation and SQ of the ultimate result are my main concerns.

Any information will be much appreciated.

Phil: Thanks very much for the information.

this topic. (I'm looking for users' experiences with USB interfaces
such as the ART USBPhonoPlus v2, NAD PP3i, or Pro-Ject Phono Box II USB

Folks, calm down. ;-)

I was simply suggesting to the OP the possibility that, contrary to
conventional wisdom (including my own), Ethernet cable choice may --
underline may -- play a role in sound quality.

I was not up to testing, proving, predicting anything. Merely reporting
my own subjective experience in the hope that it may be useful to
someone else. Ok?

Yes, it makes me happy. ;-)

I'm not a technical person, but I thought Phil had provided some
technical facts that seemed plausible to me.

I was just as skeptical as you, as my OP makes clear. That skepticism
does not, however, render me incapable of noticing audio differences.

Having lived for half a century with audio-related choices made without
the benefits of double blind tests, I don't think I'm going to start
now. ;-)

True. At that point it WAS immaterial.

Later, however, as I changed my subwoofer's settings, it became clear
that the cat6 Monster was indeed the better choice. More (and tighter)
bass, more open sound, better timbres, etc.

Again, my main point is that Ethernet cables MAY yield some audible
differences. Which is best, if any, depends, I think, on a variety of
factors related to one's system.

Spending lots of money on ANY "audiophile" cable IS foolish. That was
NOT my suggestion.

While data transmission is not affected by choice of Ethernet cables,
that may not necessarily mean there is no difference in the audio one
hears. (See my previous post and Phil Leigh's response on post #316) at

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322&page=32

Would I rewire the house in search of improvements in the sound? No.

But if I could test the difference with a short run of cat6, as I did,
why not? It was only $15 and worth every dime to me.

Of course, no guarantee it would work for someone else. But it might.

+1.

After much experimentation, that has been what has worked for me.
Eventually, I settled on buffer at 4,000, but the difference with
20,000 is not significant in my setup.

FWIW, in my system switching from a generic cat5 to a Monster cat6 made
a significant difference. I was very skeptical, to put it mildly, that
it would. I was wrong.

But rather than believing or not, why not try it for yourself? If you

both the perception that there is a change as well as the perception
that there is no change.

Some (most?) of the tweaks discussed in this forum may produce only the
illusion of improvement, but some may not.

I tend to agree with Ron's take on this.

However, matching (integrating) a sub is not without its challenges.
Room mode taming, an important consideration for decent low-frequency
sound, will require room treatment for sound absorption (Tube Traps, or
similar) and/or digital signal processing correction. I had excellent
results with the DSpeaker unit in my sig.

The validity of Ron's point also hinges on the type of music you mostly
listen to and how fussy a listener you are.

Don't overlook cables. In my system, even a better (Monster, $15) cat6
Ethernet cable did cause a significant SQ improvement. I know, tough to
believe, but that has been my experience.

Best luck!

I'm very happy with an Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N Smart

Nobody is 'properly evaluating' anything anyone is doing. All we are
doing is an attempt to maximize our own listening pleasure and
graciously (I hope) share our own experiences.

No one is holding any Gospel!

Given that we all have different equipment-room-ears-brain-musical
tastes, it's not entirely surprising that we achieve the best results
with different settings.

I guess I'm just a bit lazy. My preamp's volume control is remotely
operated, but it does not allow very precise setting unless one is
willing to get up and turn the knob manually. Then one sits down, only
to find that it'd be nice if the music were just a tiny bit louder (or
softer). Then one gets up again . . .

To avoid this, I'm willing to forgo the potential advantage of vollock,
if any. ;-)

*rgro*: Amazing (or maybe not) how different our responses to these

I just listened to the first CD of the Gardiner's traversal of Bach's

absolutely mesmerizing.

True.

But what if one already has a matching sub?

Why not then tweak one's front end?

(And let's not pretend that matching a subwoofer to the main speakers
does not involve a lot of tweaking) ;-)

While I mostly set the volume via my preamp, I find it very useful to

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0

2012-01-05 Thread guidof

As promised, I listened some more, especially to compare the latest
SBGK's values (with buffer set at 20,000) to the so-called Guido F
values (with buffer at 4,000 as preferred by rgro).

In my system, although the latter sounds very good, the former -easily-
bests it.

I tried a variety of music, some (supposedly) well recorded, some
poorly so.

SBGK's values consistently return the more gripping musical experience.
As I believe he himself mentioned, one gets more easily carried away and
forgets about paying attention to the audiophile minutiae we may
otherwise feel inclined to focus on.

However, if I may take just one example, Geza Anda's masterful
rendition of the andante from Mozart's piano concerto no. 21 with the
Vienna Symphony (RCA), here are some of my notes:

- The bass is tuneful and well controlled, the midrange is better
defined (than in the case of the Guido F's values), the treble is
extended without glare.
- The intricacies of the interplay between piano and orchestra are
illuminated but the overall coherence of the piece is not lost.
- There is greater transparency of soundstage, a greater sense of being
at the performance itself.
- Above all, the dreamy quality of the piece, and of Anda's performance
of it, is conveyed effortlessly. Not a hint of listener's fatigue here.

Of course, I'm always open to try new and improved version of these or
other SW mods, but for now these settings have given me the best
results and they have become my new standard. TT3.0 was a significant
improvement over the out-of-box SBT. This is another step up. Not bad
for a < $300 device!

Many thanks to soundcheck, SBGK, and all the others who have
contributed their impressions and experiences.

Of course it does. But enough of a difference? For whom? At what cost?

Not surprisingly perhaps, on this forum you will find people who
profess an external DAC makes all the difference or none, some who
claim that if it does it only makes a tiny one, some who swear by all
sort of mods, others that think believers in mods are fooling
themselves, and so on.

You are free to take anyone's advice (including mine) or not. But it's

And above all, enjoy the music!
