With VAT and import duty total is a bit over £550 I think.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Unused Transporter SE's on eBay.com

2020-07-13 Thread jezbo

Just to resurrect this thread, there are some new transporters now being
shipped from the US for £355 + £95 shipping.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313.TR3.TRC2.A0.H0.Xlogitech+transporter.TRS0&_nkw=logitech+transporter&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=slimdevices+transporter

Do you think these are legit? Would there be extra import costs? Is it a
good deal?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Room acoustics

Does your amp have balance & tone controls? That's the usual way to
tweak the sound according to room acoustics - something modern amp
designers often forget in the quest for a trendy "minimalist" design.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Toslink cable, how fitted?

2012-10-26 Thread jezbo

The standard digital optical out from SB3 and duet is a standard sized
toslink correct? Not a mini? How tightly is it supposed to fit? On both
my SB3 and duet it just kind of sits there and falls out easily, this is
with the house shape upside down, it doesn't seem to fit in any other
way.

How about the duet receiver? Will that have a cleaner signal path to the
digital out than an SB3, comparable with the Touch? At least that won't
have any possible interference from display circuitry.

Thanks guys, it's all about the sound for me. Personally I do like the
retro mono-colour look of the SB3 display. I don't need touch-screen
features, not if I can't take it to the sofa!

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] If external DAC used, does SB3 or Touch make much difference?

2012-10-25 Thread jezbo

I've taken the plunge and ordered a Beresford Bushmaster DAC
(TC-7530DC). I currently have an SB3, but have read opinions that the
best combination possible is a Touch feeding an external DAC. But why?
Given that the DAC circuitry in the Squeezebox device doesn't come into
it, how much of an improvement would a Touch feeding the DAC give me
over the SB3 feeding the same DAC?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] So when my SB3 eventually dies and its not possible to buy another ...

Interesting discussion on this going on here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?96660-The-Future-of-Squeezebox-Product-Line-Up&p=719644#post719644

Hopefully my SB3 will have a good few years left in it yet, I may pick
up a Squeezebox Touch second-hand as a alternative/backup device. The
future, if the ecosystem has a future (and I hope it has) looks like it
will be VortexBox-like devices for the server end, with devices like a
Raspberry Pi or eeeBox running SqueezePlay for the player end, feeding a
good quality DAC via digital out/optical cable.

Personally, I'm not too bothered about the online services, it's all
about my local music, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Of course some other system may come along which nicely fills the gap
opened up by the end of the Squeezebox line.

I have considered that too, but the iPod touch's DAC probably isn't top
quality, and there doesn't seem to be an option for digital out to pipe
it through a good one - I will try it though since I have one already. I
can still use my muso software to control it remotely.

Right now the cost of second hand units are pretty high, and these will
have an ever diminishing lifespan looking forwards, if they are being
used in the mean-time.

To give me an option, does anyone know of an alternative network music
system with a programmable interface (API or CLI)? I can adapt my muso
software to work with any system that can take simple "queue song",
"clear playlist" (etc) commands.

I'd rather not ditch LMS (assuming the software will continue to be
available), having developed muso to interface with it (to run from a
laptop), and an iOS app to run from an ipod touch (or ultimately an
ipad) - either of which currently act as my browser/controller which I
do NOT want to lose. If I could live without these I'd consider a
Cambridge Audio Stream Magic.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Can anyone recommend a Cambridge Audio DacMagic...

2012-05-22 Thread jezbo

... for enhancing the sound of my SB3? I've had my eyes on one for a
couple of years now, but perhaps there's better out now for a similar
price.

Currently my SB3 is fed directly through a decent Marantz amp +
Mordaunt-Short speakers or Heed CanAmp + Beyerdynamic headphones. Music
source is usually lossless flac files.

Also, for anyone who has actually got a DacMagic, what are the
additional connectors I'll need to purchase?

I did hear that even quite basic power cables can improve it. I'd be
prepared to pay more for a DAC that gets the most from my headphone set
up - the canamp and the cans are hi-grade components.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply & DAC for my SB3 - recommendations?

2009-05-14 Thread jezbo

My current system is detailed below. What reasonable cost (sub-£200)
enhancements would you recommend to get the best improvements for
listening to lossless (and possibly lossy) files through the SB3? I
think I need to improve the setup with a new power supply (the one I'm
using is the one that came with the SB3) and external DAC.

Are there any other weak links in my set-up?

SB3 -> Marantz PM4001 amp -> Heed Canamp -> Denon AH-D5000 headphones
SB3 -> Marantz PM4001 amp -> Mordaunt-Short Avant 904i Speakers
