[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] AIR Studios?
Just wondering if y'all have heard about this place? I was looking at the Pioneer sc-27/25 and they have "AIR Studios Monitor Sound Tuning Certification". Is that something I should be interested in when looking at AVRs? Got to this when reading about the Transporter going for $1350 now at some places. Very interesting, but then I figured I still need to upgrade my oldy Denon AVR-4800, which is probably a higher priority. And it would cost about the same as a Transporter... But I do want good audio performance out of my new AVR. That's when I bumped into that Pioneer. Any suggestions for good sounding AVRs are welcomed! jan PS. http://airstudios.com/information.aspx -- jmourik jmourik's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7123 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70911 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Good for me I guess :-) Of course I still buy CDs, but all I do with them is rip and store in the closet. So they are sort of my backup. If stores like Linn Music had more music I like I'd be buying there a lot more... Having said that, I do think there's still a problem for this to become mainstream. I recently got a Duet for my bedroom, but my wife still prefers just turning on the radio to listen to PBS, even though it's in the Favorites on the Duet. But it's still too techie I guess. And then sometimes it doesn't quite work, or it takes a while to "connect to Squeezenetwork", or things like that. It's still not as easy as turning on that radio. Depends a bit too on how "golden" your ears are. If you have really good ears, and your focus is on stereo, a 2-channel setup might please you most. But some of the Denon, Maantz, NAD and Onkyo AV receivers offer a lot for the money, and pretty decent sound quality to boot. Recently I've been thinking that something like an Onkyo 805 ( http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR805&p=i&class=Receiver ) with it's Burr Brown dacs would be as good as getting an external dac. For a bit over $700 currently on amazon.com it's quite a steal. And it would give me the option of using HD audio in the future if they ever start selling that. It has hdmi v1.3 and all the fancy stuff. Plus all the bass management of the receiver will be usable too. Funny, last night I decided to try the rw cd drive instead of the 52X cd read only drive. After feeding it an Accuraterip key disc, I tried ripping one other cd, and it just flew through, and AccurateRip gave it the thumbs up! I was wondering why, until I read your post. And yes, the second drive is set up in "Burst Mode"! So I just re-ripped a badly scratched cd, and in burst mode it took 1 minute 25 seconds, but accuraterip reported the first track as inaccurate. And indeed, the rest of the tracks have the same size, for the flac, as the ones I ripped two days ago in secure mode, with the other drive. So from this test, I'd say: - Use AccurateRip - Rip in burst mode first - If AccurateRip reports problems, rerip in secure mode jan -- jmourik jmourik's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7123 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32725 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Yesterday I had the chance to compare the Lite Dac-60, slightly modded by the owner, to a modded Transporter (no idea what the mods are). To my surprise I couldn't hear a difference between them! We were switching back and forth, the dac fed by the digital out of the Transporter, and it sounded the same to me! We already compared the TP to a stock SB3 and a Bolder modded SB2, and of course the TP beat both of them handsomely. So I was quite surprised to find the dac60 to be equal to the TP! I was very surprised, and partly glad, partly disappointed. Skunk, you're most probably right, and for the music part of my system I would prefer to go straight from balanced dac to amp. But this is part of my surround system, so I also need the amp hooked up to the receiver, a Denon avr4800. And in my defense, I started my system upgrade with getting new speakers, B&W 803. Then I got a new amp, Rotel RB1090. So I'm working my way back to the source. :-) I still need to do the test though, hooking up the SB3 analog out straight to the amp, to see what difference skipping the, admittedly mediocre, Denon receiver makes... Note btw that the RB1090 has balanced input, but I don't think they are "real" balanced input like, say, a Krell. At least, that's what I understand. So I'm not really sure if it would be so much better to drive the Rotel through the balanced inputs... jan -- jmourik jmourik's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7123 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31949 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
