[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] AIR Studios?

2009-11-03 Thread jmourik

Just wondering if y'all have heard about this place? I was looking at
the Pioneer sc-27/25 and they have "AIR Studios Monitor Sound Tuning
Certification". Is that something I should be interested in when looking
at AVRs?

Got to this when reading about the Transporter going for $1350 now at
some places. Very interesting, but then I figured I still need to
upgrade my oldy Denon AVR-4800, which is probably a higher priority. And
it would cost about the same as a Transporter... But I do want good
audio performance out of my new AVR. That's when I bumped into that
Pioneer.

Any suggestions for good sounding AVRs are welcomed!

This then would also be applicable to different cables? For example, at
MusicDirect they are selling this digital cable with their ipod dock
packages: http://www.musicdirect.com/product/83222 (Black Knight, $99).
I'm using the Blue Jeans digital cable (
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/digital-audio/index.htm ). That one
is around $14. I don't see why one would be better than the other,
unless there's something going on with jitter and such...

After I started using my Sb2 I haven't used my cd transport anymore.
It's just way too convenient, and the sound quality is the same. And by
now my ears are bad enough that I can't hear the difference between the
SB2 into a decent DAC and a Wadia transport anyway. Good for me I guess
:-)
Of course I still buy CDs, but all I do with them is rip and store in
the closet. So they are sort of my backup. If stores like Linn Music
had more music I like I'd be buying there a lot more...
Having said that, I do think there's still a problem for this to become
mainstream. I recently got a Duet for my bedroom, but my wife still
prefers just turning on the radio to listen to PBS, even though it's in
the Favorites on the Duet. But it's still too techie I guess. And then
sometimes it doesn't quite work, or it takes a while to "connect to
Squeezenetwork", or things like that. It's still not as easy as turning
on that radio. I can deal with that, because I just think it's cool. But
most people can't... Yet...

Any idea when there will be a Duet2 that can at least pass through up

It's quite hard for me to hear the difference between 256k WMA and 128K
AC3 when listening to music on the plane, through my noise canceling
headphones. And that's an understatement. :-)

It's quite easy for me to batch convert my flac files to 128K AC3.

But I'd still like to see a real comparison between those formats, WITH
blind listening tests. Just because I'm curious.

Unless you always look at the component whilst playing music :-)

I'd say it doesn't matter one bit how you do the comparison, blind,
double blind, deaf, mute... As long as you feel you pick whatever you
like best, who cares how you decided? Not like you're going to spend a
ton of money depending on the outcome. Also, if you've ripped some DTS
music, it might be easier to by default use the receiver's dac, to
avoid being startled if you try to play that DTS album through the SB2
dac! (Or when the wife tries to play it.)
If you were deciding between, say, a $1000 dac and the internal SB2
dac, I'd recommend a lot of possibly blind testing...

2007-12-29 Thread jmourik

Depends a bit too on how "golden" your ears are. If you have really good
ears, and your focus is on stereo, a 2-channel setup might please you
most. But some of the Denon, Maantz, NAD and Onkyo AV receivers offer a
lot for the money, and pretty decent sound quality to boot. Go to some
HiFi/Home Cinema store and hang out for a while, listen to whatever you
can. Hopefully you have some nice stores where you can do some
listening, that way you can make up your mind.
Just take your time, this stuff only gets cheaper...

Recently I've been thinking that something like an Onkyo 805 (
http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR805&p=i&class=Receiver ) with
it's Burr Brown dacs would be as good as getting an external dac. For a
bit over $700 currently on amazon.com it's quite a steal. And it would
give me the option of using HD audio in the future if they ever start
selling that. It has hdmi v1.3 and all the fancy stuff. Plus all the
bass management of the receiver will be usable too. I can't use that on
my current receiver when I use the external (analog) input.

If you want to keep on running Windows on the slimserver box, you can
use realvnc remote control software, see http://www.realvnc.com/ . They
have a free edition you can use for private use. It's quite simple,
install the realvnc server software on your slimserver pc, it will
install as a service. Install realvnc viewer on your "normal" pc. Now
you can connect with viewer to your slimerver pc, it will show you the
slimserver pc desktop. Pretty nice and easy.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power conditioning -- Shunyata vs PsPower

2007-05-23 Thread jmourik

So I'm browsing through the MusicDirect Spring 2007 catalog, the nice
small version, and looking at the power conditioning products, again.
I've been mulling over getting something for quite a while, but can't
make up my mind. So they have the PsPower Quintet for $495, and the
Shunyata Guardian 2 for $449. The Quintet would be enough for all my
gear, including TV. The Shunyata would service my two amps.
Does anybody have experience with these products? Comments, hints,
tips?

Oh, and the Guardian needs a 20 amp power cord. Does that still fit my
15amp wall ac receptacle?

Yes, shouldn't be a problem. You'll have to install the WMA and the

SACD I don't know, DVD-A sometimes, but it's difficult. Some you can
successfully rip with smartripper, or a combination of smartripper,
vstrip and lpcm24 (see:

But it doesn't always work...

Funny, last night I decided to try the rw cd drive instead of the 52X
cd read only drive. After feeding it an Accuraterip key disc, I tried
ripping one other cd, and it just flew through, and AccurateRip gave it
the thumbs up! I was wondering why, until I read your post. And yes, the
second drive is set up in "Burst Mode"! So I just re-ripped a badly
scratched cd, and in burst mode it took 1 minute 25 seconds, but
accuraterip reported the first track as inaccurate. And indeed, the
rest of the tracks have the same size, for the flac, as the ones I
ripped two days ago in secure mode, with the other drive.
So from this test, I'd say:
- Use AccurateRip
- Rip in burst mode first
- If AccurateRip reports problems, rerip in secure mode

Because for -b it says "Valid values are 8 or 16" I assume it doesn't

Hey, we had a thread on this, religion and audiophilia. Though it's
probably easier to convince someone that a modded SB3 sounds better

I just tried this on a 24bit 44.1khz file from Linn Records (Barb Jungr
- Waterloo Sunset, studio master). The wav file doesn't play, but the
flac file encoded from that wav does (on my SB2)! They both show as
24bit in Foobar, flac=1474kbps, wav=2116kbps. They both play in foobar.
Weird!
btw, Foobar shows the wma as 44.1khz/16bit!!/1462kbps. I can transcode
to flac from foobar but then my flac is 16bit, and half the size as the
wma.

Got another chance to listen today, and the Bolder did sound much

I wish we had compared this, I wanted to try it by hooking both up and
synchronizing them, but we didn't have enough time to do that. So now I
still have two questions:
- how much difference does the TP make vs SB3 as a transport only
- how much difference is there between the stock TP and the modded TP.

I did hear a difference between an Arcam CD23 FMJ and the Transporter,
if that counts :-) But only in direct A/B comparisons, I'm pretty sure
I couldn't pick the correct one if I walked out of the room.
And the Bolder sounded kind of weird to my ears, like the treble was

We did listen to the sb3 + dac60, but no direct comparison. I thought
through the sb3 it sounded a bit more edgy, but then again, when we
first started listening to the dac60 through the TP, I thought the
dac60 sounded more edgy. Until we started a/b comparisons...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Lite Audio DAC-60 thinking about getting one..

Yesterday I had the chance to compare the Lite Dac-60, slightly modded
by the owner, to a modded Transporter (no idea what the mods are). To
my surprise I couldn't hear a difference between them! We were
switching back and forth, the dac fed by the digital out of the
Transporter, and it sounded the same to me! We already compared the TP
to a stock SB3 and a Bolder modded SB2, and of course the TP beat both
of them handsomely. So I was quite surprised to find the dac60 to be
equal to the TP! I was very surprised, and partly glad, partly
disappointed. Glad, because it will save me a lot of money,
disappointed, because the TP looks so good...

Exactly. It only outputs HiRes through hdmi. And I want to feed my dac

Maybe you guys can add an hdmi input to the Transporter? :-)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Convert hdmi to spdif? Possible?

2007-02-07 Thread jmourik

The new Oppo dv-981hd has this feature:

"High-resolution multi-channel digital audio output through HDMI
supporting CD, DVD-Audio, SACD, Dolby Digital and DTS sound tracks." (
http://pages.citebite.com/q1i0x2m4t2ehl )

This is nice but I can't feed it into an outboard dac, since they don't
have hdmi input. So... Is it possible to convert hdmi to spdif?

The seams arrived last Friday. They are definately not as nice looking

mount too, just use the provided pushpins. I do think it made a

Yes they ridiculed it, but why would we let it shut the thread down?
Some of them were funny. So laugh about it, then wait if somebody else
posts another opinion. The nice thing about the internet, if not
censured, is that we can all get in on the conversation. Just don't
take it too personal! You don't like what somebody wrote, post your
opinion. Easy.
I think both sides of the issue are good to hear, just to broaden my
horizon. In the end, obviously I do whatever I want, whether or not
anybody else likes it. If I want to put expensive ebony feet under my
SB2, do you think I won't because opaqueice says it's stupid? No way.
Neither would I buy them because GaryG says they're the bee's knees.
I'd buy them because I get a kick out of it!

So I'll probably buy that Furutech fp15 recepticle. It's $40, so I can
handle that. But I think opaqueice will probably call me silly. (Or
should I get the Shunyata, hmmm.) Also, I'm looking into getting either
a DAC or a Transporter. So I might order a TP and a PS Audio dac, hook
both of them up, and try to do a DBT. If I can't tell them apart, I
saved myself $1000. Or maybe I'll still get the TP for the cool factor.
And maybe a bunch of people will tell me I'm a fool to DBT them. So
what?

Anyways, I love a good flamewar, like adamslim :-)

Like opaqueice, when I'm looking into some component to buy, like right
now a DAC, I want to see reviews that tell me something. If I look for
reviews on the Benchmark DAC1, they all say it's a very good DAC. Until
Lavry shows up, then I read Lavry is better. Can't the magazines do a
nice DAC shootout? I know, a lot is personal, I might prefer the DAC1
over the DA10, and somebody else might prefer the DA10. But maybe I
could learn something from a comparo like that. The reviewers could all

Skunk, you're most probably right, and for the music part of my system
I would prefer to go straight from balanced dac to amp. But this is
part of my surround system, so I also need the amp hooked up to the
receiver, a Denon avr4800. And in my defense, I started my system
upgrade with getting new speakers, B&W 803. Then I got a new amp, Rotel
RB1090. So I'm working my way back to the source. :-)
I still need to do the test though, hooking up the SB3 analog out
straight to the amp, to see what difference skipping the, admittedly
mediocre, Denon receiver makes...
Note btw that the RB1090 has balanced input, but I don't think they are
"real" balanced input like, say, a Krell. At least, that's what I
understand. So I'm not really sure if it would be so much better to
drive the Rotel through the balanced inputs...

On forums it helps to be a tad more expressive. Radish's post was kinda
blunt. A short explanation would have gone far...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 10awg or 12awg dedicated line?

2006-12-28 Thread jmourik

Should a dedicated line use 10awg or 12awg? I think electricians kinda
want to use 12awg by default, is there a benefit in using 10awg? When
reading some boards on the internet, people jump up and down raving
about blacker backgrounds, wider soundstages, bla bla bla I'm an
audiophile bla bla bla. Then others tell you it doesn't really
matter... What's a simple Dutch guy like me supposed to think? Let
alone do!
If I get a recepticle (shunyata, oyaide, furutech, pspower?) that can
handle two dedicated lines in one, should I go for that. two lines?
Should that use two separate wires, or the 2-in-1 wire I think you can
use for that?

Anyways... Any suggestions?

Happy Holidays!!!

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Carver M-400t -- 220v plug into 120v?

2006-12-22 Thread jmourik

I'm the proud owner of a Carver M400t amp, have had it for probably 15
years or more! Cute little thing, though I must admit back then I
really liked the Yamaha version too, the little pyramid...

I bought the m400t in the Netherlands, and as such the sticker on the
back says "220~250 Volt 50 Cycle ABC 8 fuse only". But it has the
American style ac connector. So I'm wondering, can I plug this thing
straight into 110V here? What would happen?

Thanks guys!

jan

Oh, the tie-in to SB? I want to use it in my bedroom with the SB2
driving B&W in-wall speakers...

Exactly what I did after I got through all my CDs, even though that's
only 300some. Burned them to dvd, and the dvds are now in a fire proof
fault :-) First things first!

I guess you're talking about classy DACs then? I played with a Dac-Ah
recently and the sound was very different from the SB2 or Denon. Very
warm. Didn't care for it too much...

Sounds like the unit is running on ms windows :-)
