Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What The Future Of Audio Might Look Like In A Digital World
You are right in the mass market software context. This software is for niche market, small volume sales and is supported by their creators. In the HiFi world 450 $ are peanuts ;) For me software which does crossovers and DRC for 10 channels at this price is still ok. I'm convinced that this is the most valuable expense in an audio system way ahead of any other piece of equipment. I suggest that anyone interested tries the free and paid software. The most important is to use DRC at first. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What The Future Of Audio Might Look Like In A Digital World
Archimago first I want to thank you for your work comparing different equipment and samplings and I followed it since I'm an early SB user (from SB2) but not anymore now. There is so much to say on that subject. I will try to summarize. I switched for Acourate for a lot different reasons. First I had the stereo only DRC version of Audiolense. When I wanted to go to Digital XO and I had to made choice between the both A... software. I read everything I could (there are some comparisons, maybe not complete but google Acourate vs Audiolense). I went to Acourate based on some good reports from very knowledgeable people like Mitchco and Bob Katz, both sound engineers. I can't compare directly the XO versions. I think that Audiolense is a very good package, user friendly but a bit too automated. Acourate is more open but with a long learning curve. There is no manual per se but Mitchco wrote some articles and the designer, Uli B., helps a lot via email or via the Yahoo group. Acourate is very powerful, not so friendly and not for a beginner or for somebody who looks for simplicity. But for a guy like you ;), no problem. The results are very good. This is the best sound I ever had and it is for 4 way with two additional subs and three horns from 250 Hz up.in a to small room. My friend made the same choice and it uses it just to DRC his commercial Focal speakers with very nice results too. Acourate produces filters in stereo (by channel) wav format perfect for any convolution engine. I use JRiver with 10 channels convolution. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What The Future Of Audio Might Look Like In A Digital World
Hi guys, I tried DRC and used Audiolense and now Acourate. I never had success with DRC with my horn system. It is very complicated to get it right even with DRCdesigner. There is so many variables Do you really think that Acourate is expensive at about 450 CDN? I don't . This is much less than any half decent DAC or any other hifi equipment (cables!!!) but the effects on sound are bigger by several magnitude . orders. If someone can get good results with free DRC then fine, but those commercial packages are very powerful and friendly and a must in case of FIR XO which I do. Quad are you using a mike correction ? different corrections for horizontal and vertical positions ? According to the previously referenced tread http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/119164-ecm8000-orientation-speaker-measurements.html , the FR response varies a lot. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Hey folks, please help me with getting Inguz/DRC/ setup on my SBT!!
In my previuous messages when I was saying phase I should have said polarity, normal or inverted. I found some interesting comments in the Audiolense help: (images not included). All corrections in Audiolense are made such that all speakers and drivers have a positive polarity after correction. Therefore, polarity check and peak identification are important input from the measurement to the correction procedures. There are a few speakers out there where the polarities of the speakers are ambiguous. By default, Audiolense detects the first significant peak. The first impulse response below is regarded as having inverted polarity, since the first significant spike is negative. The second a woofer - has a first significant peak that is positive, and is thus regarded as having positive polarity. The timing of the two speakers is associated with the identified peak. The polarity check and peak identification will be effective in most circumstances. But under certain conditions and with certain correction procedures the peak identification may fail and the correction will be less than optimal. It is possible to disable the automatic polarity correction from the main form under the Measurement menu. When the automatic polarity correction is disabled, Audiolense will work on the premises that all speakers and drivers are connected with positive polarity and will use the first positive spike for timing reference. -- krzys krzys's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2256 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93393 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

You speaker is two ways. The impulse response and the delay are established following the highest peak. This peak is dominated by the tweeter. If one of the tweeters doesnt work well, the calculated delay is false and applies only to the tweeter. The woofer which plays more than half of the sound is not well corrected/aligned to the tweeter. As I said, sound image should be much more focused after the DRC correction because speakers get time aligned and phase corrected. Try this: change the frequency range of the measurements and measure woofers and tweeters separately, observe the calculated delay. Are they the same? 1.6 ms is a lot of misalignment, not normal for equidistant speakers. Something is wrong. DRC is very precise in spot correction but the measurements have to be good enough. I'm listening in the exact same position; my head is around 30 cm (a foot) from the wall. I installed an acoustic panel (25 mm thick) just behind. I'm using an Apex mike, omnidirectional (nearly all those mikes are made from the same W61 Panasonic capsule), pointed between the loudspeakers. In my system the sound is more focused (centered) with the DRC correction than without! What I'm saying is that the near wall position is not the cause for the focus problem, nor is the omnidirectional mike. I never heard that somebody has used a cardioid mike for speaker measurements, but I'm not an expert. Look at those results, same behaviour for all of them, Behringer is good enough. http://www.realtraps.com/art_microphones.htm , read carefully, the mikes curves ARE flat, the measured source is not. A word about my system, it is a 5 way system, tapped subwoofer horn, two direct bass drivers and horns for medium and highs, digitally crossed and time aligned BEFORE the DRC application. This system is TOTALLY flexible, even too much since I'm able to obtain the best or the worst depending of my errors. A typical error would be a phase inversion on one channel, DRC cannot correct that, the obtained filter is wrong and the sound becomes unfocused, not in phase. DRC has its limits. Evdplancke, what speakers are you using? Try different mike orientations. Check the impulse response, are both channels similar? Ask Brent from Audiolense, send him your measurements. With Audiolense it is rather easy to get good filters compared to the DRC itself. It takes me 5 minutes ;-) Chris -- krzys krzys's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2256 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93393 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

As I know DRC is very intolerant to distance differences of the speakers to the mike. Have you checked that? Audiolense, my experience: what you describe is for me a typical phase misalignment result. Can you check that all your channels in the speakers are in phase? Have you checked your speakers with a phase alignment record (I use Stereophile test CD track 17). I have 5 channels speakers; even one driver with inverted phase gives the described result. Another possibility would be a major time misalignment of the drivers, it gives the same result. Audiolense cannot correct for such major misalignments. Normally the center image should be even more on focus than not corrected. 1. Yes Behringer mike should be corrected since it is hot above 8 kHz, there isn't a "Typical" correction but you can use the attached file 2. At the end of the measurement Audiolense gives you the channels time difference, it is right to the upper frequency range in the upper part of the measurement window. The difference will be 0 if perfectly centered but as Phil said it is not a strict necessity. Thanks Phil, you are right on both issues. Yes I also thought about the XO version for the extra features but I find the price high for an uncertain gain. My DCX allows time correction for each channel so I don't really need it from Audiolense filter. I also don't like too much his (Brent from Audiolense) policy of annual upgrade fees. Is it not > possible with Audiolense? You are right it is not possible to use Touch to play the Audiolense signals! There is a touch plug-in called Waveout which permits that but it doesnt work if Inguz is installed, they are incompatible! Im using a Maudio external Firewire card. I send spdif signal to the dac and record it with the Maudio card. Yes Touch is not in the measured chain but it still gives very good results with Audiolense. What is important is that the speakers are equidistant from the mike (Audiolense gives you the delay between channels and this delay has to be very small, something like 0.02ms) Ideally to get the best results from DRC the room has to be acoustically treated and speaker at least roughly time aligned (if actively crossed). The results are spectacular! DRC corrects amplitude, phase and time alignment although only for the measured position. Chris PS duplex card is not a must but the signal must be generated by the analysing software (Audiolense) in order to build the impulse response. Theoretically Audiolense can accept imported files but I didn't succeed to make it work, i.e. to record trough Touch with Audacity for example. -- krzys krzys's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2256 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93393 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] RC (Inguz etc.)
Hi Phil, when you are publishing custom-convert file shouldnt you tell people that they cannot use it directly since it contains the MAC address reference of your device i.e. 00:04:20:22:01:8e in the posted file? and maybe also the Inguz version i.e. 0.9.30? For some unknown reason when I install Inguz (0.9.32 last version) with SBS7.5.2, it does not register my Touch and thus don't create the new custom-convert file. I had to hack the previous custom-convert file by manually replace the MAC address of my previous SB2. Firedog thanks for the question, it made me do some search and discover the Waveinput plugin for SBS. http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/WaveInput_plugin In theory it let you send the soundcard output to the SBS. If it works the test signal from Audiolense could then be sent to SBS and recorded with the SB box in the chain. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Inguz dsp plugin - what are the results?
Ok I will try to explain, sorry for my basic English. Ideally when measuring your system/room response, you want to include all the components of your audio chain. With Audiolense (and many many measuring software), the measuring signal is generated by the software and you cannot play it trough SBS and SB box. You have to connect your soundcard directly to your system bypassing the SB box. The measured signal, which is used to generate correction filters, does not include the irregularities of the SB box, thus this one have to be perfect ;-) Audiolense is very easy to use but is not very competent in exporting or importing recorded responses thus response recorded outside of the Audiolense is very hard to use. . There are other ways to record signals and generate correction filters but they are very annoying in use and very prone to faulty settings and processing. I dont know Accourate but it is a bit costly 290 Euros (including crossovers which I dont want) compared to Audiolense at 170 Euros, maybe it is better but it also wont play the signal through the SB box. Completely free version is the DRC software, but you have to know DOS and have to mess a lot to get it work. This software also does not play trough SB box. The use is very well explained here http://www.alanjordan.org/RoomCorrection/Directions.html just forgot the Convolver VST part, Inguz is a convolver. The only way to include SB box Im aware, is to generate a sweep signal and its reverse in Cool Edit (or similar software) , then play it from SBS, record it with for ex Audacity and then create the impulse response needed for the DRC filters computing, long, nasty and difficult process. I tried it and the results were very strange sometimes. I prefer Audiolense even if there are some limitations. The correction is still very good and makes a significant improvement in my system (active 4 ways with cones and horns) Chris -- krzys krzys's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2256 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60057 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I do exactly what you are planning. I'm using Audiolense to create filters and use Inguz to convolve them in the SBS. The only drawback is that you cannot measure the whole system since Audiolense is generating his own signal and you cannot pass it trough the SB device. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] RC (Inguz etc.)
Inguz is a plug-in of the SBS server a software; it is not relied to the hardware part. So it will work with the Duet if you use the right software version. Inguz stopped the development of the plug in. It worked like a charm until SBS 7.3, after that you need some modification in the settings. They are documented on SB forums. Make a search on this forum, a Touch forum and Third party forum. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] RC (Inguz etc.)
You are doing it right. I was also surprised by this behaviour. For ex the balance: first you can change the increments in one of the Inguz settings file (don't remember which one now). At the beginning you have access to +- 2dB range. Once you set -2dB and go back one step in the menu and then return you will see that the range has increased to -4dB in the direction you have chosen at the beginning (negative or positive) It is nice once you have cached it. It is maybe not intuitive at the beginning but it works within the limits of the display. I'm wondering who made this display for the Touch, Hugh i.e. Inguz himself? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB versus PC player and SB jitter
Phil without going into details. We all know there are many roads to the « beloved » sound. I wanted to share this alternative with the community. I strongly believe that a real comparative opinion has to be sought from another source than a device dedicated forum. So I did. I got only few (deception) valuable opinions, one of them is this post from Alan Jordan, who actually owns a Duet: “I have a Squeezebox Duet. I have directly compared its digital output with a PC output going to a MHDT Labs Havana DAC. When using the PC to the DAC, I tried coax via an M-Audio Delta 410 PCI, coax via a Lynx 2B, and USB directly to the Havana. The Squeezebox Duet driving the Havana did not have any digital glare, but comparatively was soft in the bass with a lack of dynamics. I thought the PC driving the Havana sounded much better. Note that the Havana is a filterless NOS DAC, so it does not have any jitter reduction technology and hence shows differences in transports quite clearly. I tried many different software players in this comparison, and three different PCs. The software players included CPlay, Squeezeslave (which allows a PC to act as a Squeezebox device), Foobar, J River Media Center, and Wavelab. In all cases, I thought the PCs sounded better than the Duet. I thought an optimized PC using CPlay, Squeezeslave sounded best. I never tested using a full CMP build when using CPlay, but did test using a similarly optimized Linux system when using Squeezeslave. >From my testing, I imagine a fully optimized CMP / Cplay solution would sound far better than any Squeezebox. Wavelab actually sounds very good too, but it is not a usable playback solution. I also did the same comparison of the Squeezebox Duet and PC into a Benchmark DAC1. The differences between the two, while detectable, were not as noticeable when feeding the Benchmark - probably due to its asynchronous upsampling. However, the Benchmark does not sound very good in my main system so I didn't spend very much time comparing the two. The Duet and Benchmark are still in use in my bedroom system, where I am not as obsessed with getting the best sound I can, and they suit their purpose well there. “ If I compare the SB or Transporter to the their solution , I see that they produce the same SPDIF output and obtain a very low jitter. The use of TCP/IP is not relevent. They use the PC bus for the same task , I mean the link from software player to the SPDIF chip. The main difference is the DAC in the Transporter. If someone likes his DAC then he is done for less money than the PC solution with external DAC, but as we know not everyboby likes this DAC. The SB + Dac is cheaper. That was the object of the thread. The PC solution is also atractive to the DIY inclined ;-) I’m very reluctant to eliminate any solution just on some theoretical considerations ex noisy PC and so one. As usual the only way would be to compare both solutions in the same system YMMV -- krzys krzys's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2256 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65422 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB versus PC player and SB jitter
The comparison was between a specialized DIY PC called Cmp using a special software Cplay (not exclusive to the Cmp) costing around 1200-1500$ and having a touch screen and a remote, a kind of digital only Transporter or SB. I thought that it could be a possible alternative to even a Transporter. Each device has his enthusiastic followers on the respective device forum, this forum included, but few have compared the solutions. I think that their solution can work and is very very flexible. -- krzys krzys's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2256 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65422 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Inguz dsp plugin - what are the results?
Darren I second Robin on this but suggest to go further. Yes DRC optimizes the sound for a particular spot but this does not mean that the sound is getting worse elsewhere. I believe that the room counts for at least 50% of the global SQ. Room treatments are costly and invasive especially for the bass. DRC is the best way to equalize the sound and to time align the drivers in the digital domain. No other method deal with all the aspects of the sound. You already use the computer for your transporter so adding a convolved filter just for trial is trivial. Try and rapport. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Inguz dsp plugin - what are the results?
Ok then Phil, since I got the permission ;-) I mentioned the DEQ just because regalma1 compared it to Inguz DRC. Speaking about DEQ it is a nice piece of gear for the price. I used it more than a year. I started with the DCX which have some EQ capacity and thought the DEQ will do a better job for EQ. It did but it is still only the EQ. The EQ can be done easily and indefinitely (problem of the DEQ ;-)). It is quite easy to cut peaks, it can do any good for the nulls (but anything can) but it is another piece in the signal path with its own clock and the equalized sound is dead. I mean it seems to kill the music, the sound was flat, non dynamic, not engaging, not like a live performance (my aim and therefore I use pro drivers and horns). Then I started to try DRC, first with the original Dennis S. DRC 2 version, the results were not good, bright washed sound. Then I tried Hi Fi Juice Audiolense, better in the 2 version and very good in the current 3 version. BTW the newest DRC 3.01 version is also very good and with a bit different result from Audiolense. To resume: DRC through Inguz plug-in sounds very well on my system and is much much better than the DEQ equalization. In my system the digital signal from the Squeezebox goes to the Behringer SRC (digital source switcher and reclocker if desired) and then to two DCX (crossovers and DACS), all the Behringers run from the same clock. I strongly recommend DRC for room /system correction of most aspects of the system sound. Please excuse my limited English. As a matter of fact you indeed cannot use the squeezebox. The measurement has to be done in the Audiolense using an audio soundcard from the PC for exemple. This of course makes that the Squeezebox is not in the chain. Maybe this could be possible if the audiolense could be piped through the slimserver but I don't know how to do it. I'm using the digital out from my soundcard (optical) so the only piece out of the chain is the SB. The external DAC is in the chain since it receives the signal. For tweeking the target curve and make notch filters in the curve you don't need the XO version, even the basic version has it. I think that the editing of the target curve and the limitation of the filter frequency range can be easily done using the Audiolense software from www.juicehifi.com . This software generates RC filters and has a very nice user interface. The target design is much easier than with DRC since the curve is visible. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB digital out level ?
Before the tread turns to another philosophical discussion about formats, I want to report my findings. Of course Sean and other knowledgeable members were right; there should not be any difference in sound level depending on the source. Guided by the answers I made some measurements yesterday. At the beginning the difference was clear 3 to 5 dB louder on the SPL meter and RTA when the same file was played from the soundcard or player than from the SB. What I haven't told you all is that I'm using the Inguz DRC plug-in. I was assuming that when the filter is set to none the plug-in is not acting in any way. I was wrong. Even if the EQ module is unchecked in slimserver, when InguzFlac is checked in file types the sound produced is lower in level. This explains all but how the plug-in acts. I will address this issue in another tread Thanks you all for the guidance and replays. I'm honored to get the answer directly from you. The digital signal from the SB is much weaker than the signal from a cd player and I mean full volume no repalygain etc. I would love this signal stronger.
