Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Is this better than CD quality?
I'd also like to pile it on when it comes to the quality of recordings. I find myself disagreeing with a lot of the stuff that is positioned as a super high recording standard out there. A lot of those are very sterile sounding, and rarely feature top artists and ensembles in a really inspired performance. It sounds sharp, but is "meh" artisitically, imho. Then there's the stuff everybody thinks every audiophile must cream his pants all over to be credible. Cliche stuff like Daft Punk's Random Access Memories. To me it's like "There's barely a single acoustic instrument reference point here, and they mixed this with musicians laying down their particular track all over the world and artificially mixing it together." If I hear anyone babbling about Nile Rodgers' "amazing dynamics" I'll crush their skull with an oversized wrench. Really. Is it odd some of my favorite recordings are 1960s tracks like Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debbie" or the Coltrane/Hartman album? There's also stuff like Kevin Mahogany's Enja albums, you can tell they were all *Present* in the performance, not listening to stuff on headphones by themselves while laying down their paid for track. And that is when the recording is good. I agree the majority of music is at best very indifferently recorded. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation) running Ubuntu 18.04 + LMS 7.9.1 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- KEF Reference 1 Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado RS1/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111693 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I have a rather high powered amp. If I turn the Benchmark DAC2 to 100% volume the SB Touch can't play at more than 55. I got tired of the standard PS getting so dirty that it prevented operation of the SBT remote. Finally decided to go for a cleaner TeraDak supply, despite the questionable price ratio (~$130 on Ebay) compared to the Touch price point. The temperamental remote behavior is *gone*. Build quality is excellent (haven't looked inside), but nice alu audiophile casing and all :-) Sound quality? Sounds great. :-) Better than the standard PS? I *think* I can hear a bit more transparency etc, but sue me, it's not as if I was ever unhappy with sound quality before. :-) The remote operation bothered me, despite the fact I mostly use a tablet for navigation. All in all I regard it a worthwhile update if you're willing to part with $130 for a dedicated power supply, and it's not that much money. :-) 24838 +---+ |Filename: 20180401_111429 copy.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=24838| +---+ ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 14 Pro) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108895 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I remember the days when they would print -in the back of quite a few CDs- whether it was DDD, ADD or AAD. ...I had no idea that digital recording pollution had started as early! I present the following little experiment I have gone for over the years with one of my favorite recordings ever. 24411 One version is a 320k CBR rip from the original CD, the second the HDtracks download, supposedly from the "previously undiscovered, cryogentically-frozen and kept-in-a-vacuum master tape". F__k me if I can ever hear a difference. And I've listened to it on $4k headphones (not mine), spending an utterly unenjoyable hour trying to convince myself I *had* to hear a difference. I've done the same experiment, only comparing a 16/44 and a 24/192 of very well recorded, 2000-ish albums, much to the same result. Maybe *there* I'd be able to detect a difference between the 320 and 16/44 version, but it's not one I'd particularly care for other than for archiving purposes. And I supposedly can still hear up to 17kHz, so it's not like I have deafened myself over the years. And now that it's easy to score $2 CDs in the used market, I've rediscovered the joy of roaming around in a music store on a weekend. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Quick question about DAC "filters"
I haven't read it. But in a perfect world, I'd like this simple feature in a DAC+Preamp, or in an integrated DAC+Amp unit into active speakers: * High quality and configurable (30-40-50-60-etc) frequency divider in the digital domain with both analog and digital *dual* outputs, one for low and one for high domain. Some audiophiles may prefer more, but beyond 3 I never would see the point. * Option for room optimization in both domains. My current main setup [see sig] provides me with the output options, but not with the built-in configurability. I drive my speakers full range, and optimize the sub on the side of it. The system I set up at my SO's place (NAD D7050 integrated amp) allows for total optimization. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Is 24bit/44.1kHz high resolution or marketing BS?
Yes 16/44 is plenty, and we deserve more recordings that... uh... deserve it. Based on my reading, even the best human platinum ears can not hear beyond 20/44. Again, in some extreme border cases arguably the quantification error is the issue, and not the sampling frequency (Nyquist nailed that one). But I have not EVER heard of ONE scientifically conducted test that ever remotely indicates any human on the planet would benefit from anything beyond 20/44... and most stuff we get in 16/44 doesn't remotely deserve it, thanks music industry... ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106935 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I knew there'd be great replies here. I can't agree more about keeping relying on Amazon, iTunes or Spotify as guardians of my music collection. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Our Music Listening... in 10 years.
Got into a good discussion and fellow music lover over a bottle of Pinot Noir last night, and we talked about how our music listening experiences had changed... and what might happen down the road... Personally - the biggest change to my music listening *ever* was due to the SB product line a bit over 11 or 12 years ago. I went from CD jockey to exclusively listening to digitized music within the time it took me to rip my extensive CD library (it took 2 years, with some mistakes along the way due to wrong assumptions). Initially, I thought I'd use the SB for convenience, but that for my more in-depth listening CDs were irreplaceable because I imagined they'd "sound better"... don't ask me why, old habits are initially hard to break. Looking forward... I imagine a few things may change the way I listen to music... (1) Room correction. I have experimented with it. Not yet sold on existing solutions. Call me old fashioned. Maybe I lucked out with my current room. But I am sure it'll get there and make a huge difference. (2) Music library... main location on one's mobile device. It's kinda striking to see that storage capacity on mobile device has kinda plateau'd around the "magic" 32, 64 and 128 GB options for a few years... probably with the prevalence of 4k video the need for more will finally force mobile device designers to up the ante, and *that* is when people like some of us *could* possibly consider migrating our entire music collection (mine is around 480GB). I know, I know... "But Pablo, your entire collection will reside in the cloud! Companies are migrating to cloud strategies, so it should be good enough for you!". Well, companies have long term storage strategies that make sure a cloud accident can't obliterate their data, and I haven't seen those make it to consumer level media storage yet. Is it a business niche someone should exploit? Probably a disappearing niche. Those of us with music libraries are probably a species in the process of extinction. 99.999% of people will never discover a music universe outside of Spotify. (3) Audio quality breakthrough with UltraHD, 16x times CD quality bla bla: In 10 years I'll still have 2 ears that will still have been shaped by a few million years of human evolution, and I doubt they'll get any better. Naw. But I betcha the usual suspects will try to sell us the stuff. :-D (4) Improvements in electronics and loudspeaker design: Marginal and diminishing returns, as it has been for many years. Same for more exotic material (Shazanium-coated ultra-audial tweeters etc). (5) A better UI for music apps. Please. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106933 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

And while I don't subscribe to the theory that resources stand in the way of wider 24/192 acceptance... I agree with those that say that hearing a difference between 16/44 and 24/192 with the exact identical original master source is a futile exercise. And yet, I do own some 24/192 and other hirez recordings. Why? Oh well - why not, if I like the music? :-) It's only a few additional bucks, and it kinda guarantees I shall never have to buy the same music again, in the highly unlikely case some fundamental breakthrough allows me to suddenly discern a clear difference between 16/44 and 24/192. But then again at that point in time the studio will probably magically find a 96/768 master that sounds even better... :-D ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106593 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] So they recommend Cat8 ethernet cables now!?
Other than unnecessary personal vitriol, I wonder about the discussion in performance improvements, and how it impacts music reproduction technology. Here are a few personal opinions: * When even Intel declares Moore's Law as in hiatus, you know semiconductor advances have slowed a fair amount when it comes to some design parameters - but not all of them. I think the major trend there has been the focus on mobility and low power requirements. Hence the race to make personal computers twice as fast by throwing in extra GHz has slowed down a lot. That said - the *huge* benefit of that has been that now we have highly mobile personal devices that allow us to enjoy a degree of music quality anytime-anywhere that was only attainable with very esoteric and highly static gear not that long ago. I recall listening to music on a very good Sony Walkman back in the 80s, and damn, compared to what we have today it was probably garbage. Let's not over-romanticize the audio past. * My own home desktop computer-server is based on 2010 technology. Top of the line Intel stuff back then. I think from 1992 to 2010 I probably upgraded my home PC every 2-3 years or so. I liked to build my own machines. Still do, but truly the reasons to do so these days are not as clear. My 2010 desptop still performs very well. I have changed most peripheral devices (bigger SSD, bigger HD, more RAM, faster graphics) but the core system is the same, and performs very well even with current benchmarks. I *will* build a new machine in the next year or so, but it will not be for performance reasons - multimedia works perfectly well with that I have. And I am not a gamer. 24/192 audio is something that can be served by very, very old CPU and memory tech. You could build a well -performing LMS with pretty much any computer you find in an old box. Performance hasn't been a gatekeeper to audio performance in many, many years. Fact is it is pretty low CPU cycle stuff. * As to networking and bandwidth... I haven't been in an environment where music challenges stuff in a long time. My tablet gets 200M download and 12M upload speeds over wireless in my home. In a few years, your smartphone will support 1G download speeds, call it LTE or 5G. Not that it matters for music, even if Tidal decides to stream everything at 24/192 at that point in time. :-) As to right now, the fact our beloved SB boxen and LMS servers can deal with 24/192 in our homes, with technology that is pretty dated at this point in time, indicates music is not a resource intensive app in this day and age. * And, when it comes to audio nerd gear (I am talking about us here with an old fashioned audio shrine), I think there have been some very significant advances over the years. Fundamentally, a speaker is still put together the same way. I especially think today is an amazing time to put together budget systems, or systems up to $10k or so. The quality you get from those was unattainable 20 years ago unless you threw far more $ at things. Then again, I could probably live with my 1999 vintage Accuphase E306v amplifier for life, Ncore modules be damned. :-) If it wasn't so damn bulky. :-) *Arguably the biggest advance, and one that still hasn't sunk into the old fashioned brains of most audio enthusiasts, is software controlled and DSP based room optimization. Raise your hand if you have one! (Looking around and sees one or two hands). See... we're an old fashioned-bunch. In summary, I think the audio world has changed by leaps and bounds. Some of the early changes were indeed driven by CPU power and storage capacity (my current 475GB music library would have been very daunting in the mid 90s :-)). But I think these days it's been all driven by the capabilities of mobile devices more than anything else. Our audio shrines are pretty old tech, both in what's inside and what's required from the periphery... ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106593 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

The DAC is about the D in the first iteration... and any signal is the same in D, and the initial conversion to A follows the universally accepted Nyquist rule... so we have a perfect reproduction of the original signal thanks to Nyquist. Q1: Does anyone dispute that? OK. then we move on and send down the A(nalog) of the equation down the chain. OK, here things get chancier. Digital is predictable, analog is harder. Here we get into noise and signal separation and what not. Ugh. Q2: Does anyone dispute the really relevant letter in DAC is the A? And that there, it's not just about the DAC chip, but the entire A subsystem? ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106593 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

We should all be aware there are far more critical applications out there, bit would be unacceptable (which is why one also has correction and error detection codes thrown in). The stuff works, period. And there's absolutely no way the same identical digital frame will sound better in analog because of any characteristic of the digital signal. It just doesn't happen. That said, I still like better-than-basic Toslink cables in my system. I think it was about $100 and simply looks prettier. And no, I never spent a minute comparing it with the old basic Toslink cable. As to Ethernet, yes, I also pick better quality cables, but would never waste money on anything that makes esoteric audio claims. To me it's just about a quality connector so it doesn't break or introduce some weird effect (I have had bad Ethernet cables). I have also at times been told I wasted my money on my DAC (not that it's anything esoteric) because I wouldn't been able to tell the difference compared to a decent $300 DAC. The fact of the matter was that I didn't pick the Benchmark for sound quality - I picked it for future proof input-output choices, lots of them. :-) I replaced a big, hefty $7k CD player I was only using as a DAC with the Benchmark, and never worried for a second about a decrease in sound quality, either. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106593 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I think the audio hobby is irrational by definition, and we all have our pockets of craziness to define ourselves as "audiophiles" and read this forum. 99% people out there are perfectly happy with their smartphone and the free earbuds that shipped with them. I for one fully enjoy merely visual improvements to my system, and freely admit I enjoy it more if it pleases not only my ears, but also my visual and tactile senses. I don't claim I can hear a difference, but I simply enjoy it more, and psychoacoustics are relevant to the overall experience. I am pretty sure my favorite jazzband sounds better to me in a suave Manhattan cafe than in a Bronx trash disposal site. There's nothing wrong with psychoacoustics. They matter. But scientifically speaking - we should be careful about making claims that an experiment is reproducible. There are tons of audio tests out there that show it all comes down to 50% chance (basically, accident). This is true with smartphones, computers... and the LMS ecosystem, no matter what OS it runs on. I ran with Ubuntu 12.04 LMS until earlier this year, running it as a VM, which means I can always migrate the environment anywhere, anytime, as long as VMware decides to keep supporting Ubuntu 12 on their VM Workstation/Player apps. Spotify however eventually became irritatingly temperamental, though, which prompted me to experiment with the latest Ubuntu LMS and a latter version of LMS. It has worked great. But note that even though the LMS Web User IF reminds me constantly there is a later version of 7.9.0 available, I have not bothered to update it, nor do I apply any updates to Ubuntu 16.04. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Managing Loudness in a Music Library
I was curious if any of you manipulate gain parameters to keep loudness levels even across your music library, or not, and just live with stuff the way it is. Personally, I leave classical music alone. Most of it I have ripped with dbPoweramp[1], and leave it alone. With jazz, I could live with leaving it alone, but I have played around with MP3Gain and some other tools to manage levels across playlists. With popular music like R&B and salsa - it wouldn't be much of a problem if you acquired the CDs in the same decade they were produced, I think. But start mixing things up, and playlists become very uneven[2]. Hence I have used MP3Gain on an album by album basis, although my library (wihich is very large) is quite inconsistent. So I wonder if anyone uses a tool that evens out levels library-wide? How do you handle it? Just curious. ...paul [1] It seems to me that dbPoweramp has upped its output levels with new versions. I have re-ripped some albums, and upon comparing my first rip with the most recent one, there seems to be a loudness increase. I have not dabbled with the advanced DSP parameters in dbPoweramp ever, which I think allow for some output level settings. [2] The particular culprit is: you have a few CDs from a certain artist you bought back in the 80s. Now you discover that Amazon has re-issued some albums from that artist that you missed. You buy them as an MP3 album. The loudness difference between these new ones and the original CD rips will be brutal. That said, Amazon has done a great job of digitizing some hard to find 80s/90s albums. In some cases, they sound (IMHO) markedly better than the original release ADD/DDD CDs, because some of them sounded ugh (and prolly gave digital a bad name), but yeah, the current heavy handed approach to loudness prevails. Hence... how to best manage? ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106423 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

My supercar analogy was based on the fact that while performance differences can be measured indeed, in day to day driving and with speed limits and horrible drivers out there - it doesn't make a difference, and in many ways is an inferior choice. The same could be argued about cables - differences can indeed be measured, but the human ear can't resolve things the way measuring resistance/capacitance/inductance would. That's just a personal philosophy thing. It *feels* better knowing the connections are solid and shielded effectively. The conductivity of the cable is unlikely to make a difference unless someone tries to "fine tune" cable design to introduce (IMHO undesirable) amounts of inductance or capacitance to tune the sound. I am not claiming at all there's any science to my preference for slightly upgraded cables. It just makes me feel better, hence it's money well spent (and it's not like I ruined myself buying it). ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105775 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I was curious about the paper's definition, and came across this... ".. This can be transformed into an XY test by assuming that correct discrimination is made when 24 bit / 192 kHz was rated higher than 16 bit / 44.1 kHz, and incorrect discrimination if 24 bit / 192 kHz was rated lower than 16 bit / 44.1 kHz. *Results where they are rated equal are ignored*, since there is no way of knowing if participants perceived a difference but simply considered it too small compared to differences between other formats, and hence cannot be categorized. .." The key here is if they define "CD Quality" as hi-bitrate MP3 (256k+) or an uncompressed CD. The article doesn't say (perhaps the study does). I can differentiate between the two (although most of the time for relaxed music listening I may not care much about the difference). As to the same recording in 16/44 vs 24/192... nah. Maybe it's because my testing was limited to 3 albums (none of which were originally mastered at 24/192, but rather in analog), but I doubt it, and honestly they sound amazing the way it is. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 16bit versus 24bit versus dynamic range
the rational consensus i have read is that while a very few people have hearing range that goes beyond 16/44, no human being can possibly resolve beyond 20/44. 44 gives you the best possible range of human hearing as established in innumerable tests, and provided to you by Nyquist. 20bits covers the extreme best possibly case of dynamic hearing capabilities. there are some good tests online for those who want to be honest to themselves. my hearing goes from 35-16.5k, and i can just hear a dynamic range of <16, the 20 is wasted on me. it's the quiet passages that get you with age. and I listen to the simple test (no wide staging no depth stuff) with stellar headphones and a great headphone amplifier. and fail when it comes to the theoretical 20/44 optimal human hearing limit. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105717 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

On Open Source - many companies make nice profits with it. If you have the credibility, services and consulting are eminently monetize-able. Arguably, if Meridian made MQA open source there'd be less of a debate about it, and more people would take it up wherever it happens to me sense (a narrow focus if you ask me, but I posted that earlier). Because there's cost involved, potential beneficiaries will still run a strict cost-benefit analysis. And some of the benefits ma have nothing to do with the sheer obsession with sound quality - it might be yet another way to control distribution and the overall ecosystem. On HD Audio having no audible benefits... quite a rational and defensible argument. But peace of mind for archiving purposes as storage cost drops down dramatically is also to be considered. I did make a point to acquire HD all time favorites when special offers where available. I don't like to struggle and concentrate on silly stuff when I listen to music, hence I hate blind tests - let other people bother, I'll take their word for it. I have some pretty resolving equipment, but damn me if I *care* to hear a difference. Sometimes, on very familiar and very well recorded favorites, I have thought I could hear "something", hence where I have it I simply listen to the HD version and know anything else is in my head. Done. That said, I think 24/192 is total overkill in any end user's listening environment, and yet why not for albums we totally treasure. Yeah on physical media. I used to have several drawers full of CDs (over 3000) and now they're are stored out of sight. I'll never ever spin CDs or vinyl again when it comes to my main system. Whatever media I get I digitize on the spot, and scan the cover. To me convenience is a key part of listening to music. Getting up to change media... I no longer miss it, nor do I for a second think it sounds any better than the digitized version ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105070 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

For entirely subjective reasons most of the time, provided said gear is competently engineered. For other audiophiles, the music is the journey, and the gear the means to reaching it, hence when diminishing returns hit, interest in new gear decreases. I think my mix is 20/80 on those. i must say that about the only time i heard a night and day difference after an upgrade was the first time i bought good speakers (very musical 2-ways from long dead German company). they were all of $750 at the time or so. ever since, i think i have made more or less rational decisions - but the increase in sonic quality went by the law of diminishing returns. i also once could have sworn those green pens improved sound quite dramatically, and my fav CDs (in storage) all have that carefully applied green outer and inner edge :-) since my first decent system (Denon 1290 CD player, use Luxman integrated, the inevitable Technics SL1210 turntable (still in storage) and a TEAC 8030 cassette deck i worshiped), i have only upgraded major components 2 times. not bad for a 25 year interest in audiophilia. once when i moved into a big house, and blew a lot of money into a system that made me smile for countless hours for over 14 years, so not a bad return on investment), and then after divorce, when i moved into a *small* place and i had to downsize... and i love the little system i have now for less than a third of the cost of my former system. my only area where i admit total suckerdom and guilt are headphones - be it over the head, or in ear, i have a ton of them. luckily i never blow more than $700 on them, but it does add up, and honestly the first good set i bought still sounds absolutely fantastic. not sure why i do that, but after confession here in audiophiles anonymous i may be on the road to recovery. oh and i also once spend a lot on a stupid cartridge for my turntable that didn't even fit right and sounded indistinguishable (and quite possibly worse) than the standard, $200 Ortofon i had had forever. :-) i have my former high end system in storage, and my attempts at selling the pieces on Audiogon or Ebay show that any dollar we spend in audiophilia is gone, there is nothing like a decent return on investment :-) other than that, i enjoy moderate amounts of irrationality here and there, but when i am happy with something it tends to last forever and i don't muck around with it, even though i stay current on what's new and such. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 + LMS 7.7.3 on VMware Player System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> MusicalFidelity M1PWR -> Totem DreamCatcher Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103238 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] CD's vs. vinyl
i still have my turntable in storage, because i have about 10 LPs i didn't digitize yet. i wonder if that procrastination was an excuse to simply keep it. ah the old days. mixing friends a tape would take over the hours, from pristinely played LP to compact cassette. it meant something. but listening to LPs was so unwieldly i had tons of mixed tapes. a lot of my listening sessions were cassette recording sessions. but i am in no way missing the ritual. even playing CDs was intrusive. my CDs and my remaining LPs live the exact same fate - they are in storage. for my favorite albums i scanned and PDFd the artwork and booklet, and will sometimes check it out and read as i listen. i have started to buy CDs again, because you can buy many dead cheap used and flac them. then they're put away into a big box i drop off at Rasputin with regularity. my favorite CDs remain in relatively inaccessible storage. maybe i'll digitize the rest of them. but i have become lazy :-) some of them stgarted to appear as torrents, and i see nothing illegal about downloading them because i own the media, after all. :-) the analog ritual - no way, i don't miss any of it. there is absolutely no doubt in my mind CDs always sounded better, even in their worst early days. my turntable was (is) a Technics 1210 with a better arm and needle. i fondly remember my premium Denon 1290 CD player, because it was really good, connected to a used Luxman amp and modded German speakers. that was my main rig for 10 very satisfying years that saw my CD collection grow into the 1000s. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 + LMS 7.7.3 on VMware Player System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> MusicalFidelity M1PWR -> Totem DreamCatcher Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103078 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

and the other question is... has listening to a good 16/44 recording ever imposed a limit of my full enjoyment of a great performance? there are several recordings i own in two versions: the first ripped from the original CD i owned (16/44 flac), the second the HDtracks version at 24/192, and in one case i also have a car friendly 320k MP3. (1) Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby. one of the greatest live recordings ever. adore it. but given the limitations imposed by the original recording, i will be damned if i can hear a difference between the 192/24 and the 320k MP3 (let alone the 16/44 flac). i have tried - someone plays the different versions to me. i love them all, but it seems a random act to try to tell them apart. (2) Grover Washington - Winelight. i actually seem to defualt to the 192/24, seems an ounce better, perhaps a better master tape or a little volume boost. (3) John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman - one of my favorite recordings of all time. i prefer the 16/44 rip, the 192/24 seems artificially sharp at worst and pointlessly volume boosted at best, sounding a bit like a DDD CD from 1990AD (shiver). ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 + LMS 7.7.3 on VMware Player System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> MusicalFidelity M1PWR -> Totem DreamCatcher Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103034 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

some more listening tests i suggest: * different SATA cables for your hard drive * different versions of CPUs on your media server * Different RAM on your media server * different vendors chipsets * onboard versus USB hubs * SSD versus Spinning Disk so many things can make a difference way before you even hit that high end USB cable! to me SSDs sound too digital, the rotating nature of a classic hard drive naturally is able to deliver on a more analogue sound, since it resembles a turntable! wish i could upgrade the reading heads on the hard drive some! i have put a dried avocado pit on a drive and it decisively improved sound. versus the SSD and pitless HD i got an extra analogue dimension. maybe the ants helped, too. i have an upcoming review on different eSATA cables, suffice to say i have come up with my own audiophile line of cables to address this flawed element where digital audiophiles still fall prey to the pitfalls of cheap standard cables! ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 + LMS 7.7.3 on VMware Player System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> MusicalFidelity M1PWR -> Totem DreamCatcher Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102918 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Oh-oh, the ethernet/USB cable dispute all over again ...
excellent points made in this thread. getting the bit stream perfectly from A -> B is not the issue. it is always the finicky analog part that is problematic. and there is more analog in electronics that people realize, and it is treacherous. people should know that, with analog designs, sometimes -and despite super-expensive, datacenter-churning design modeling tools, even top chip designers can't be sure the chips will work until the first samples come back from the fab. it has killed many a startup company. analog is treacherous, and the poison is any sort of signal contamination, which ought to make any audio aficionado listen up :-) the signal path is seldom just A->B, that's why feedback is introduced on purpose, to control and clean stuff up. i do have an MSEE but i haven't designed anything in over 15 years, my communication skills with customers lured me over to the sales and marketing side of things. :-) now none of this means i believe in mumbo jumbo. the cable connection from audio component to audio component has nothing to do with the complexity if circuit design i talk about above. basically i just look for decent shielding and a solid connection, and that's it. if i hear a difference between cables my first step in identifying the cause is to slap myself, once or twice, real hard. :-) and USB cables... phhht. unless you have a cable that turns itself into some RFI antenna and violates any standard published by IEEE, i don't think so. it's a very solid interface (albeit not designed for audio, but anything running at several hundred Megabit per sec doesn't have to be, if it's used to transport audio and video in systems that set corporate customers back several hundred k$ it is safe to assume it works quite solidly). we probably all have heard hum, we have heard static hiss, and we have seen things get better as we change something about cabling and/or power (often synonymous). but that typically means there is a *flaw* somewhere in the system. could be a *broken* cable. could be something not connected in the cleanest, smartest way. could be your cat likes to secretly chew up your $5k Nordost cable. i think it is great to be "cable aware" and strive for good quality connections, but before i buy a $5k cable to upgrade my system you better belive i'd spend the month for an upgrade to a real *active* component. the more *passive* and thereby transparent a cable is, the better. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 + LMS 7.7.3 on VMware Player System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> MusicalFidelity M1PWR -> Totem DreamCatcher Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102632 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Oh-oh, the ethernet/USB cable dispute all over again ...
i agree with you. totally. i am not sure why in this day and age we still think writers ought to be subject experts. pretty much every opinion article in the wall street journal betrays the fact every publication had an agenda these days... hey stopped making money with subscriptions a while ago, now advertisers and donors call the shots. audio publications have no more credibility than our very own exchange in here... and i personally know who i'd rather listen to. personally - i will stay subscribed to stereophile, even though (or because?) i sometime vehemently disagree with what they write, but i think they honestly try, and disagreement is natural when people are passionate about anything. in fact they tend to hate each others' guts more when they marginally disagree about something important to both them and their positions are just inches apart, than when they diametrically oppose each other in such a radical dimension that their paths never even cross in life... ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 + LMS 7.7.3 on VMware Player System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> MusicalFidelity M1PWR -> Totem DreamCatcher Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102632 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
