The D+PRO is not my daily driver, and I'm more interested in the digi+,
digi+pro, and i2s-- where I find bypassing power is a fundamental
improvement. So really can't say if stock USB power vs. 5V/3.3V LPS
improves on the D+PRO...Buuut I've set this up just in the last few
days, for another project involving making a good a/b testing platform
for the Kali FIFO buffer (long story). So maybe I'll listen, then go to
USB & see if it's diff.

However, I noticed in your testing, you always go through USB (not
GPIO)-- On the digi+ using linear power vs the stock USB power wart
*thru the USB* didn't audibly change anything... also Hans mentioned
this in his vid re: (usb/GPIO) whereas thru USB made no change.

You can see my setup somewhere in the linux section, Kali... there's a
pic.. I'm borrowing my 4x LPS's (LT3042 based, and cheap) supplies to
play with this--

I'm cool if it measures the same, but would really like to see you
re-run the tests taking it all the way thru GPIO, see my setup -- Then
maybe play with the digi+/digi+ pro also :D

are running hot?

Or maybe the wifi module, reseat / remove that as a test.

Let me play devils advocate :D

These guys are jerks for selling a cable over 3 figures and faking a
demo.

However, know your equipment... if there are internal patch cables, or
computer cdrom audio patch cables (remember those) connecting the rca
input... then who gives a f***, you're wasting money.

But nicely designed equipment have short pathways etc... so a well
constructed rca cable will do *less* harm then the "comes with it china
pack in" same even with the pack in power cords--

TT is fine per say, but my eyes glazed over when this site was flooded
with OS tweaks, process priorities etc. :roll eyes:

I never liked 3 and never used it, thought it messed up the sound... I
always stuck with 2.0, and have a nice zip & text instructions to
reinstall it. Also noticed it can co-exist with EDO.

If soundcheck gives permission I'll post it.

I'd be curious if you even hear a diff, I always stacked it with linear
power, other hw tweaks etc. -- but do all that I got it to lock in and
actually sound better (this is all the spdiff out)

as for tidal, don't know

Back when I was experimenting with this, found some of the same
characteristics in the analog also were in the spdif out (I call it
hash), the couple mods improved the spdif out... just sounds more pure,
especially when trying to listen at night at very low volume.

Now I can A/B it with the rasppi/digi+ (or rasppi/dac+ for analog) (has
to have linear power thru the 5V header on the hifiberry boards) and
it's easy to hear to me.

Also I don't think linear power does much on the touch, however it does
on the hifiberry boards... (luckily didn't sell the power supply)

If anyone has a CIA power supply laying around, def try the
raspi/hifiberry combo.

I suggest you abandon TT3, this was built and tweaked before EDO, and
the latest touch firmware (7.8.something)

Update your LMS to the 7.9 nightly, this ensures you have the
latest/last touch firmware.

Factory reset the touch, install the EDO applet.

On the new "Digital Output" menu, set it to digital only. Try the large
buffer, kernel idle option (avoid low power)

Install the DisplayOff applet. (yes it has a bug where the backlight
stays on after playlist completes, but it kills the screen process, lcd,
and light) I forget how but I was able to work around it.

Turn off all sound effects, animations, screensavers, etc.

Use a UTP ethernet cable if possible, don't use WLAN.

This easy stuff, all accessible in the menus.

Ok, I'll check it out--

So are you asking me to prove to myself I'm not hearing anything?

Yeah, was beginning to think, this guy knows this is impossible--

I wouldn't bring this up if it didn't significanly sound better, have
you ever played with this stuff, the spdif only?

To prove if noise is effecting the digital, you'd need to compare 2
signals & look for bit errors, or differences (and depending on where
the bit error happens in the "16-bit" binary word... can translate to
big audio blip, or nothing at all)

..then on top of that jitter can mess up when the doc should read each
of these 16-bit word... lots to go wrong

Think you'd need pretty expensive gear.

I wonder if the linear 5V is a very pure source for the 3.3/1.8-- as
reading some more on Daniels thread, he could not measure any noise on
the 3.3V on the pi, so it's very well done... not worth trying to
separate it, add a header for 3.3V etc...

Any thoughts?

Bummer, now I'm really gonna bug them about making a digi+ "Pro"

That is an old post about the original Digi-- but I just traced my stock
Digi+ and the 3V is used.

anyway, so its coming down to not using the initial usb switching supply

Interesting on the Digi+ -- they specifically added a place for external
5V for this purpose, as I soldered on the header-- suspect that is not
right on the 3V, I'll trace it & ask them.

BTW, this is not a knock-off chinese stamped out cookie-cutter board

In addition HifiBerry facilitated the linux i2s drivers, for this spdif

In this case since it's audible... my theory there's less distortion in
the spdif square wave signal (hence less errors on the other side)

Though this guy did some nice simplified graphics on spdif and where it
can go wrong:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grzoqEb2KMk

Here the 5V supply might more effective than when used on the touch... I
honestly thought it was a little subtle to even care (on the touch), but
couldn't hurt right? (this was 3-4 years ago)

...So I still have that linear supply, so figured try it out
on/repurpose it for the pi/digi+

Now on the pi, if you power it from it's usb port, there's protection
circuitry, a fuse, and a tiny switching supply (in addition to the
typically cheap 5V usb supply)

This setup the pi's switching supply, fuse, protection is all bypassed
(you can power the pi from it's GPIO pins) -- in addition to the digi+
not pulling power from the pi--

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Logitech Transporter replacement

2015-10-28 Thread sckramer

I recommend skipping the touch and going straight to the
RaspberryPi/Hifiberry Digi+/piCorePlayer

But, you have to use a 5V linear supply-- I stumbled onto this, my plan
was to at least have a replacement for when the touch dies, but this
ended up sounding better than the tweaked sb touch (see my sig for
description -- I could do a tear down video also on that)

Really was not a subtle improvement, more listenable at night & more
there at low volume, very smooth/liquidy.

Almost want to try & set up a good stereo mic to try & catch the
difference, even thru video-- I keep the touch around as reference / a
controller & at my computer desk now

Did a video on the raspi/digi+, plan to do some more on my conclusions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5C5oSs5ELk

Also piCorePlayer is bone simple, no extra services/screen-- streaming
24/96 to RAM, then playing & the CPU is 98.5% idle -- I ssh in and run
"top"
Took TT & all that junk to get the touch cpu anywhere near that

FLAC --> WAV SHA1 HASH
= 752A5A9A72964084E946E8F84983436939C7A1FF

you have the same file, you could convert this millions of times back &
forth & it'll be the same, it will hash to:
= 752A5A9A72964084E946E8F84983436939C7A1FF

the subtle differences (if there are any) come from where you process
the conversion, either the server or client... and those subtle
differences come from how delicate jitter & spdif is to noise coming
from the circutry around it

I prefer feeding the client PCM (WAV) only, for all file types, even for
mp3, then the CPU is practically idle, it just has to read it out to the
PCM->i2s chip

LMS makes this very easy, you can can configure that in "file types" in
the LMS advanced web page

and for mp3, you can use the latest lame.exe on the server, sometimes
that is different also

I recommend using 2.0 or wait for Klaus to release 4.0 -- & also leave

You can do it without unplugging the ribbon cable, but you do need to
take out the main circuit board, there are five screws, also by rip
out, I mean unsolder the toslink, it could actually be put back, its
not destroyed... You should hunt around, there are instructions on the
best way to dismantle the touch

Also while I was in there, I touched up the existing solder joints to
the coax spdif w/cardas solder, mine didn't look that great.

we are in the middle of that my friend :) -- read this thread & Klaus's
Blog to get caught up

one misconception I see is people think this is an "equalizer" & going
to use the prio settings as knobs um, no -- what it really is a
jitter/spdif interference adjuster & how it reacts to your DAC-- people
unwittingly might be adding jitter to add sizzle/highs, when maybe their
sys is just dull sounding :) --

the best digital I've ever heard was a dCS Paganini (the music just
f'ing *SOARS*, divorced from speakers & room) -- I sort of use that as
what I strive for (it is redicuously expensive..and they don't use an
off the shelf DAC chip (Burr Brown, etc.) they do it descretely
somehow--

they have a nice (simplified) explanation of some stuff here:

http://www.dcsltd.co.uk/page/myths

the PLL section is interesting, in how is tries to error-correct spdif,
& how different DAC will handle this differently

haha, lighten up, looks like it's whittling down nicely-- there are
some linux people here-- the priorities are ratios to each other, & it
looks like its coming down to the irq procs that handle the network
stream & the audio processing

I bet that's when the FILE buffer is filling, (then the AUDIO buffer
pulls from that) -- not sure the size of the FILE buffer, but it would
be cool if we could experiment & increase that buffer, so it doesn't go
out to the network as much-- there's around 72MB unused RAM in the touch
normally

looks like you hit on a process that is handling that & injecting
noise-- maybe you increased it's priority, or decreased it so much it
takes longer for it to complete it's process

ok, but you also bypassed the toslink at the same time (or did you have
that out beforehand) -- any suggestions on a good bnc connector that
would work (easy to install/wire)?

I need to say again, removing the toslink is a big deal.

Hi Klaus,

Do you think there is a way to increase the file buffer (not the audio
buffer you are already setting) -- when the touch is playing, top shows
around 71MB free ram...? Wouldn't it be interesting to cache the entire
song file, essentially idling the network and taking it out of the
equation.

really gotta side with Phil on this one, maybe there is a sonic change,
but only because the touch is bleeding some sort of noise from that
network section of the hardware over into the analog & spdif section,
causing audio jitter or whatever-- crapshoot & beyond what I am not
willing to tweak (all this router/server/network stuff) that far aaargh

I don't agree with this, my experience as the system gets better &
better, all the point sources expand & flesh out, most basic systems
pinpoint, & I usually use as a red flag that they are probably pretty
"hifi"/digital sounding

... or there are timing issus, the highs are disconnected from the
mids, or the highs are over emphasized, giving you that pinched,
pinpoint sound

TT3.0 does not do this on my sys, everything is bigger... but yes, I
think same tweaking might have to happen, as it's a little "hot" in the
highs now, but have not spent enough time, might just need some room
changes--

in TT2.0 i used ttbuffer at 2 cause it used less CPU & I thought it
sounded better-- I still need to try that in TT3.0

also I tried the priority change script, before the TT3.0 way-- &
thought it sounded brittle & dumped it-- So I'm also gonna try
disabling that in TT3.0

I was using a transparent 1.5m cable & was hearing a strange distortion
in the highs, I thought it was something else in the system, or just my
system -- but along the way i switched to that black cat cable (not
expecting it to fix the highs), and those weird distortions went away
(kind if like an underpowered tube amp fuzzy, nervous distortions), my
theory was the transparent cable is to long. In the future I'll always
mess around with spidif coax cables to check for differences.

ok i'll experiment with it... fyi some info on my modified DAC-- the
coax is isolated with a pulse transformer, it also converts it to a
balanced signal

...so my DAC might be immune to noise (like toslink)

also it has very low internal jitter (the mod includes a replaced
clock, bypassed PLL etc--), but it does not correct incoming jitter (at
least like the ESS sabre)--

should I still try this test? I don't want to confuse things--

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Squeezebox Touch Mod

2011-08-24 Thread sckramer

Hey guys, great work on the SB_priority script, before I tried the
hardwired values, but it probably was not complete because of diff
process numbers-- I played around a little bit & it def manipulates the
sound!

Any theories on what is happening, are we just adjusting the noise /
jitter going down the spdif line?

I wonder if Caad, or someone with good equipment can measure the ps
jitter numbers when maniputating the priorities.

it's not a big deal, never heard the difference -- I dont have a way to

agreed on both, but I'm using an external DAC (stage3 modded psaudio
dl3), thats the whole point

& yep I bet it's negligable, I was asking if it was as simple as
letting it pass thru spdif, but the HW can't do it, so "say lah vee"

cool that SOX down converts, I didnt realize that, I thought the sb3
decimated it (is that the right word??)

bummer,

Time for a SB4... (or SB3 v2) Same exact form factor (because it's
perfect)

support 24/96+ spdif passthru, maybe wireless-N...

save the exotic DAC & output stage for the transporter

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 Digital Out 24bit/48khz Physical Limitation?

2009-04-29 Thread sckramer

Hi,

Could the SB3's software be changed to allow it to pass through 24/96
digital only? Maybe by adding an option to disable, or bypass the
internal DAC?

Or is it completely impossible with the hardware?

I was thinking maybe it was limited to 24/48 because of the DAC chip
