Re: Virtual Dynamics Power 3 2000% Profit Margin
I can't comment on the vd cable having not heard it .. What I can say is that in a system composed of reasonable components [mine] you can hear the effect power cables make .as a standard I use lapp classic three core cable this works out about £6/m without termination in a resent listening test four power cables were swapped a kettle lead , my lapp, a missing link cable and a silver cable. Cost ranged from 50p to £150 The cable was swapped on my valve pre amp clear bottom came the kettle lead made everything dull and muddy next came the lapp big step forward over the kettle lead and was just pipped by the ml which was a disappointment for its owner..and finally maginally better was the silver [3x 1.5mm solid core in ptfe] just more natural. So the moral is you don't need to pay mega bucks just get a good cy cable and decent termination ...if you can wire a plug why pay hundreds of dollars?..the down side is you normally need to buy a 50m reel of cable. Theres a very good explaination as to why the last few m make a difference ..quote . Good answers to power cable issues How can an aftermarket power cord, which represents the last 6 feet or so of many miles of cheap in-wall and underground wiring, make any difference at all to sound or video? There are many misconceptions about the basics of power transmission and power quality that make it difficult for people to understand why any aftermarket power cord can impact the performance of a home A/V or professional recording and film system. The fact of the matter is that Shunyata Research power cords have made dramatic differences in all manner of consumer and professional recording, sound and film systems. Many skeptics question even the possibility of an aftermarket power cord making a difference in electronics performance. Shunyata Research is pleased to provide answers. The first and most obvious question is -- can power cords make any difference at all? There is no sense in talking about theories of operation if we canÂt agree that there can be an obvious visual and audible effect when applying a competently designed aftermarket power cord to electronics. Most of the thousands of professionals and consumers that use Shunyata Research power cords started out as skeptics and have answered that question for themselves through their own experience. The only cases where a high quality power cord may not have a significant effect is when it is coupled with a poor quality power conditioner that creates a high impedance to instantaneous current flow problem. The most common misconceptrions about power transmission and their simple technical truths follow: Misconception #1: AC power is like water coming from a large power tank, flowing through several 10s of feet of power hose into a component. This implies that the component is at the end of this system. Answer: Actually, the component sits between two power conductors: the hot and the neutral. AC power oscillates(alternates) back and forth at a 50-60hz rate. So power does not pour into the component at all. The componentÂs power supply is within a complex network of wires and connectors. Due to their obvious proximity, ALL of the wire and connectors can and do affect the performance of the componentÂs power supply. Misconception #2: AC power can be contaminated just like water in a hose. This implies that once the water iscontaminated at some point up stream, that is must be cleansed before it arrives at the audio component. Answer: As stated in #1, the component is not a the end of the power hose. It is between two power hoses and the current is oscillating back and forth. Further, current is not like water at all. Electrons cannot be contaminated. There are two aspects to power transmission: the EM wave and the current flow. The current itself cannot be contaminated but the EM wave can be modulated with other frequencies. We usually call these other frequencies noise or EMI. Within thevarious parts of a power circuit there may be EMI in certain parts that are not present in others. EM energy can be transformed or redirected to lessen their effects. Some power cords for example, use capacitors, inductors, or ferrites in an attempt to control the EM fields around the audio component. The success of such an approach is completely dependent upon the specific power supply design and its reaction to the added reactive capacitance of the power cord. cont..... -- zanash Acoustician and builder of interesting cables zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45323 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

definitely the pot calling the kettle black ! hope you can see the lack of validity of your comments. maybe you could enlighten us to which cable you refer to, we may then be able to see where your coming from. I have no objection to people with a contrary view ...life would be very dull if we all had the same opinions ...and yes these are just opinions. I've meet a great number of people who have initially said cables make no difference unfortunately very few have continued to hold that belief following a simple 30 second test that most people [with the inclination] can set up. this assumes you have an amp with two identical inputs make / borrow / buy etc a signal splitter and attach so that your source [cdp sb3 etc] has two outputs. Obtain two dissimilar cables oddly similar cables sound the same ! attach to the splitter and two different inputs on the amp. play your fav bit of music and switch between the inputs, this is an instant comparison of the two cables. Any short comings in the quality of the splitter will be equal and therefore can be ignored in this instance. Outcome. you will hear a difference no matter how small .if not theres something wrong with ohms law ! if you hear no differences then either the cables have identical electrical properties and you've failed to find two different cables or your system has not the resolution to discriminate. Failing that present your self for a hearing test ! I've carried this test out many time upwards of 50 people who claimed cables made no difference only one still maintained that I and two others[ex skeptics] must be imagining what we could plainly hear. This is an easy test its simple to do and doesn't require fancy equipment. Oddly several cables skeptics have refused to do this test ..maybe some of you can speculate why that would be ! -- zanash Acoustician and builder of interesting cables zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

blind listening tests are as you have discovered very hard work to the point that the music becomes secondary imo. All the DBT's I've been involved with failed because of this even the most obvious test a portable cdp against a high end unit was not conclusive in the statistical results. Though the high end unit was picked 100% on normal listening as the better unit. For me it seems that when you put pressure on people or yourself to score or quantify blind options it seems to then dominate the proceedings over the actual listening. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 mediocre sound quality
just a few words on this meandering thread and off topic too if you can't personally hear breakin or burn in count your self lucky its something that you don't need to worry about. similarly cables if your happy with the crappy freebies then why do you need to worry about the more exotic types ? secondly just because you can hear something does not mean it doesn't exist ..it just means you can hear it. Therefore any statements along the lines of just because I can't hear it means it must be snake oil is frankly not very well thought through and I suggest you need to think about it in rather more detail before you make such pronouncments. IME I agree with patrick dixon and feel most of the changes are capacitance based ...but life's too short to worry about it. As to cables I can demonstrate two dissimilar cables sound different...anyone with two outputs on a source can do the same, feed both into an amp and switch between them. I've demonstrated this to many sceptics and not one now claims that all cable sound the same! I can also demonstrate that two outwardly disimilar cables will sound the same. ie any two copper coaxial cables from different makers will give reasonably similar results. This is in my opinion where the idea that all cables sound the same originates... as most cables on the market are, guess what ! stranded copper coaxial types. I'm either blessed or cursed that I can hear what differences different plug can make on the same cable ... If anyones local to me I quite happy to demonstrate these effects.but as I've already said you can all do it yourselves. An aside a local chap who lives less than 40miles away and a veherment cable sceptic has refused to come over and listen to my system and the cable experiment ...saying its a waste of time and he already knows the result .now why would he say that ? for me its because hes scared of the outcome and affraid that his little cosy closed world is under threat ... -- zanash Acoustician and builder of interesting cables zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42388 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

the three benchmark dac1 I've heard have been rather poor compared with the behringer deq 2496 [used as dac only] the src 2496. I've said before my friend sold the dac1 and bought an src ...saving £600 and got better sounding music to boot. there are any number of small cheap dac available ..though there is a reliability question about some ie the lite dac ah of which I've had two both died after about 6 months use [but they were only £30 each ] so I've not lost a great deal. -- zanash Acoustician and builder of interesting cables zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39892 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I have to say that I'd look at the other components in the system as I find the sb3 and transporter in there own way fairly even handed you could look at the first reflection from your speakers...from the side wall or floor ...these have a habit of harding up the sound...[by destructive cancelation of the dirrect sound].. to test. this get a mirror and place it on the floor then sit in your listening position, adjust the mirrors position when you can see the tweeters this is the point of first reflection. place a cushion at the point of first reflection on both speakers and then re listen to your system .do the same for the walls and then listen again with both set of absorbtion in place ...this may sweeten up the sound getting back what you may have lost. -- zanash Acoustician and builder of interesting cables zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39764 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I used the simple expedient of clamping the sb3 by its rear foot to a "vibration sink " made from a sheet of 18mm mdf 6mm rubber sheet and a 6mm granite placemat with felt feet. Yes it makes the unit sound better by a small but obvious ammount more a question of resolution than out right more bass or treble. Add a granite or marble shelf on top of the normal shelf and repeat . It should be clear the effect the increased mass has on the transmitted vibration. Then consider that resistors and capacitors not to mention the chips are to a greater or less degree microphonic. If you can reduce the amount of vibration within the unit you will lower the noise floor ie it should sound better. When I heard the transport against the sb3 it was clear the transport was superior but not imo $1600 superior. -- zanash Acoustician and builder of interesting cables zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39093 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Million dollars to prove cables areworth money
http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/digital/messages/13/132468.html please read this explains it far better than I can. As in all walks of life there are people who will try to make a fast buck. Look at all the so called hi end cables available for a few dollars on ebay. This is the opposite end of the market where extremely cheap cables are being passed off as good ones. If your uncertain about cables and are able to make four solder connections look up the recipies I've placed in the DIY section. These are cheap [for the most part] and easy to build. Once you have built your own cheap cable [that has a performance of a $100 cable] you can then decide if cables have any effectif not this only tells you that the cable your using has no effect in that system you can't hear the effect the cables having the systems resolution is to low to and therefore the system is masking any changes. this of course goes for any cable if you can't hear the effects the only thing it means is that you can't hear the effects. You can't extrapolate the results to all cables or make any other generalisations. Its easy to make two cables that are exactly the same and then make one sound different...all you do is add a capacitor and a resistor in series across the signal and ground of the cable...transparent do this if you have ever wondered whats inside the little box. Just because I'm writing this does not mean I'm trying to convince you either way nor am I bothered if you can or can't hear any differences...its no skin off my nose. I was also a none believer for the first ten years in the hobby, it was only after hearing the inclusion of a top audioquest cable against the freebies I was using that made me realise quite how much music they were emasculating. My problem was I could never afford the inflated prices ..even $100 was more than I could affordthat was when I decided to see if I could make a cable that was better than the freebie types the rest is history [25 years]. Its rare that I find a system that does not respond to a "good" cable [note not "expensive"]. There are components that are immune to the effect thought this is due more often to the connection regime [plug type]causesing rather more strangulation of the signal than any positive effect the cable can make. A recent example of this I was asked to fit a set of rca sockets to a naim cdx to allow the owner to run a set of rca-rca cables to his pre rather than using an adaptor to convert the din5 to rca. Once fitted the cable was swapped back to the din5 and then to rca socketsit was abundantly clear that the din5 and adaptor was taking away a huge chunk of the music information. As an experiment we used a very good ic cable and his stock cable, first both were listened to on the din5/adaptor...there was little to no difference. Then we did the same on the new rca sockets, it was obvious the two cables were very different, one being markedly superior. So much so he purchased my silver gold cable. his business is as an illusionist ..that says it all I don't consider myself to have golden ears...there the same fleshy colour as everyone elses. More to the point why don't you think cables can make a difference ? if you were to get a cable of a slightly higher resistance will that change the sound ? the answer is it has to to maintain ohms law, lowering the signal level and therefore its changed the sound. Cables have two other factors capacitance and inductance if you change one or other of these you change the efect the cable has on the sound. You can then talk about metallurgy of the conductors, there are so many factors at play it amazes me that some people think that this would have no effect on the signal passing through. The next question I always ask is what cables do you use ? its often a surprise to read the answers as almost nobody uses the freebies...but these should sound as good as $1000 set if all cables sound the same ? -- zanash Acoustician and builder of interesting cables zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38902 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Million dollars to prove cables areworth money
Now why would you want to believe some one who's business is to dupe you, ie an illusionist ? The last time I bothered to check ...the small print and exceptions would make it more than impossible to show sound changes between cable. Let alone things like amps or cdp. I can easily test two dissimilar cables [ic] in my own system an show to anyone who cares to pop in for a listen that they will sound different. My test method if you want to try something yourself. the cdp is quad99cdp2 with a fixed and variable output...the difference in sound between these two outputs is non existant using two identical cables. Fit cable A to the variable fit cable B to the fixed output [set the varriable to full output] these are then both taken to a quad 77pre using inputs 1 and 2 which are both electrically identical. Using the hand set to switch between the two, its possible to discriminate between dissimilar cable. Obviously the more different they are the bigger the perceived sound differences. Interestingly using this method with identical cables but different plugs you can hear the effect that various makes of rca connectors have on the signal passing through the cables. Its very clear that some of the more costly plugs don't sound as good as some of those with less base metal ie eichmann silver bullets are the best I've heard at any price but neutrik sy series at about 10% of the cost run them very close. The worse ones are those with two part earth returns that are crimped ie the cheap sort you'd get from maplin in the uk. Only slightly better are the big heavy wbt clones canare and audio note are particularly good but at a price. Remember Randi is an illusionist and therefore he's going to have any so called test weighted heavily in his favourhe's certainly not going to want to payout the illusionary million dollars. I'm happy to let people make there own minds up ...where as some people [randi ?] would like you to conform to there way of thinking. of course this is only my opinion and everyone is allowed to have ! do you mean davidf iso feet from zg ? yes I will be sitting the whole on the iso feet when I'm familiar with the sound. the main idea is to add mass to the sb3 as its rather light weight...ime adding mass to all audio gear has more gains than losses. Just the ability to isolate the dac from ground bourne vibrations helps. I use a stethoscope to listen to the bass ...using a screw driver to tap the floor ...using the steh. listen to the sound it make in the floor next to the bass then move the steth. to the base and listen again... theres a good 25%attenuation [guess] of overal impulse and the top end may be attenuated by another 10% ..the low freq seem to be able to pass through regardless. -- zanash Acoustician and builder of interesting cables zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37811 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
