Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Volume control question-Does it threw out bits?

2008-06-03 Thread zanash

not wanting tread on toes .my sb3 starts to sound flat [less
dynamic] once you get below 80% on the volume ...[maintaining the same
overall volume with the preamp]

I've read all the blurb and peoples post .but my unit seems to
defie the consensus So I always maintain the sb3 output at 100% and
I would suggest that if your unit is like mine you do the same.

my thoughts too.

take a trip to your local electronics emporium and by a supressor unit
for the fridge compressor...

you can build a small silencer plug that plugs into an unused socket in
a block or wall socket ..this will further reduce noise on the mains
...

or look up a rather odd tweak on asylum regarding bentonite or my post

though the affects are small a darker/quieter back ground can't be a
bad thing.

I built one as a joke six months ago to go against my all silver

I thought/hear a reduction in quality from 100% downward so if you run

I'd suggest that you set the nait's vol with the sb3 at 100% to your

Re: Virtual Dynamics Power 3 2000% Profit Margin

2008-03-27 Thread zanash

I can't comment on the vd cable having not heard it ..

What I can say is that in a system composed of reasonable components
[mine] you can hear the effect power cables make .as a standard I
use lapp classic three core cable this works out about £6/m without
termination in a resent listening test four power cables were
swapped a kettle lead , my lapp, a missing link cable and a silver
cable. Cost ranged from 50p to £150
The cable was swapped on my valve pre amp
clear bottom came the kettle lead made everything dull and muddy
next came the lapp big step forward over the kettle lead and was just
pipped by the ml which was a disappointment for its owner..and finally
maginally better was the silver [3x 1.5mm solid core in ptfe] just more
natural.

So the moral is you don't need to pay mega bucks just get a good cy
cable and decent termination ...if you can wire a plug why pay hundreds
of dollars?..the down side is you normally need to buy a 50m reel of
cable.

Theres a very good explaination as to why the last few m make a
difference ..quote .

Good answers to power cable issues

How can an aftermarket power cord, which represents the last 6 feet or
so of many miles of cheap in-wall and underground wiring, make any
difference at all to sound or video?
There are many misconceptions about the basics of power transmission
and power quality that make it difficult for people to understand why
any aftermarket power cord can impact the performance of a home A/V or
professional recording and film system. The fact of the matter is that
Shunyata Research power cords have made dramatic differences in all
manner of consumer and professional recording, sound and film systems.
Many skeptics question even the possibility of an aftermarket power
cord making a difference in electronics performance. Shunyata Research
is pleased to provide answers.

The first and most obvious question is -- can power cords make any
difference at all? There is no sense in talking about theories of
operation if we can’t agree that there can be an obvious visual and
audible effect when applying a competently designed aftermarket power
cord to electronics. Most of the thousands of professionals and
consumers that use Shunyata Research power cords started out as
skeptics and have answered that question for themselves through their
own experience.

The only cases where a high quality power cord may not have a
significant effect is when it is coupled with a poor quality power
conditioner that creates a high impedance to instantaneous current flow
problem.

The most common misconceptrions about power transmission and their
simple technical truths follow:

Misconception #1: AC power is like water coming from a large power
tank, flowing through several 10s of feet of power hose into a
component. This implies that the component is at the end of this
system.
Answer: Actually, the component sits between two power conductors: the
hot and the neutral. AC power oscillates(alternates) back and forth at
a 50-60hz rate. So power does not pour into the component at all. The
component’s power supply is within a complex network of wires and
connectors. Due to their obvious proximity, ALL of the wire and
connectors can and do affect the performance of the component’s power
supply.

Misconception #2: AC power can be contaminated just like water in a
hose. This implies that once the water iscontaminated at some point up
stream, that is must be cleansed before it arrives at the audio
component.
Answer: As stated in #1, the component is not a the end of the power
hose. It is between two power hoses and the current is oscillating back
and forth. Further, current is not like water at all. Electrons cannot
be contaminated. There are two aspects to power transmission: the EM
wave and the current flow. The current itself cannot be contaminated
but the EM wave can be modulated with other frequencies. We usually
call these other frequencies noise or EMI. Within thevarious parts of a
power circuit there may be EMI in certain parts that are not present in
others. EM energy can be transformed or redirected to lessen their
effects.

Some power cords for example, use capacitors, inductors, or ferrites in
an attempt to control the EM fields around the audio component. The
success of such an approach is completely dependent upon the specific
power supply design and its reaction to the added reactive capacitance
of the power cord.

I've used the original stop light and various incarnations of poster

phonosophie this produces an effect that very obvious the down side is
the cost but a bottle has treated 1000 cd's an still has some left. The
other item that produces the archetypal night and day difference[on my
cdp] is a Glasse Audio system lathe I have a number of duplicate discs
and its clear from the first few notes the effect that this treatment
has once you swap between disc.

On this note a number of people have asked does the effect extend to
flacs made from treated disc ...unfortunately not ime treated and
untreated sound identical ...therefore the gains are only in the cdp
replay mode.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audiophile Deathmatch: Monster Cables vs. A Coat Hanger!

2008-03-05 Thread zanash

definitely the pot calling the kettle black !

hope you can see the lack of validity of your comments.

maybe you could enlighten us to which cable you refer to, we may then
be able to see where your coming from.

I have no objection to people with a contrary view ...life would be
very dull if we all had the same opinions ...and yes these are just
opinions.

I've meet a great number of people who have initially said cables make
no difference unfortunately very few have continued to hold that
belief following a simple 30 second test that most people [with the
inclination] can set up.

this assumes you have an amp with two identical inputs

make / borrow / buy etc a signal splitter and attach so that your
source [cdp sb3 etc] has two outputs. Obtain two dissimilar cables
oddly similar cables sound the same !
attach to the splitter and two different inputs on the amp.
play your fav bit of music and switch between the inputs, this is an
instant comparison of the two cables. Any short comings in the quality
of the splitter will be equal and therefore can be ignored in this
instance.
Outcome.
you will hear a difference no matter how small .if not theres
something wrong with ohms law ! if you hear no differences then either
the cables have identical electrical properties and you've failed to
find two different cables or your system has not the resolution to
discriminate. Failing that present your self for a hearing test !

I've carried this test out many time upwards of 50 people who claimed
cables made no difference only one still maintained that I and two
others[ex skeptics] must be imagining what we could plainly hear.

This is an easy test its simple to do and doesn't require fancy
equipment. Oddly several cables skeptics have refused to do this test
..maybe some of you can speculate why that would be !

I thought 2db doubled the loudness ? thats not barely perceptable
my quad amp had 1db steps on the volume these were clearly audible.
I've also read that on average the human ear can detect 0.5db depending

2008-03-03 Thread zanash

firstly don't believe all you read on the interweb

secondly do you trust your own ears ?

if you don't then your in the wrong hobby !

conversely if you do go out and try different cables for your self
...most respectable dealers will loan you a set and if they don't go
some place else !

some things that might be useful to know ..

what sort of coathanger was used was it steel or copper .?
how did they make an interconnect out of a coathanger ?
what plugs did they use ?
what did they insulate the coat hanger with ?
how long were each set of cables ?

there are hundreds of factors that can influence the sound not least
the equipment and how it reacts to the electrical parameters of the
various conductors .

now that said any self respecting audiophile is not going to use
monster cable as its performance is limited at best

I also feel that this article sound anecdotal rather than actual but
we have no way of knowing

As previously stated you need to use your own ears to make up your mind
rather than read dubious tests of with little or no validity...imo

Re: A Cut-Rate Audiophiles Experience With a Linear Power Supply

2008-03-03 Thread zanash

the trouble all 5vdc psu's will work with the sb3

the difference between the standard wall wart and my [now sixth one
I've built] is in the fine resolution ...not so much bass weight or
slam

I also agree with the idea its the hash the smp puts out thats an issue

note that the same power supply fitted with a bigger va transformer
sounds better the maximum I've built is 150va feeding the 2a rectifier
module

Added to this adding a 0.1 ohm 3w resistor to each secondary of the
transformer also improves the percived sound as does an 0.47pf cap also
across the secondaries ..I'm not certain why as I'm no expert ...I
just googled the question about improving the performance of psu's.

These differences should be audible ..as they show up on a scope well
mine anyway!

As always if your not hearing things there are a million other reasons
why you can start with the equipment and finish with the recipients
ears ...but it does not mean there is no difference it just means that
this person can't hear it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Lavry DA10 DAC: Subjective Impressions and Listening Tests (Long)

2008-01-27 Thread zanash

blind listening tests are as you have discovered very hard work to
the point that the music becomes secondary imo.

All the DBT's I've been involved with failed because of this even
the most obvious test a portable cdp against a high end unit was not
conclusive in the statistical results. Though the high end unit was
picked 100% on normal listening as the better unit.

For me it seems that when you put pressure on people or yourself to
score or quantify blind options it seems to then dominate the
proceedings over the actual listening.

Would you block two or more of your senses if you went for a wine
tasteing so why do the same with music ?

Thats said ...nice write up all the same

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] B&W 802D Speakers. Tempted.

2008-01-27 Thread zanash

an off the wall solution [and not one that your asking ] would be to
swap dac's In a recent one on one the benchmark dac1 [mk1?] faired
very poorly against a unit 1/10th its cost. It may well be worth your
while auditioning better dac's first as it just would be a waste of
money to partner this dac with speakers over $2000.

the dac tested against the dac1 was a behringer scr2496 [slightly
modded] the dac1 owner has now sold it in preference for the above
mentioned unit with a significant improvement in perceived sound.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Speaker Trouble--Spica TC-50s

these are very fine speakers and worth the effort to replace the
tweeter.

try contacting wilmslow audio [uk] they are normally very helpful
and can normally off a suitable replacment. I would advise that you
need to change the matching tweeter in the other speaker too ...as it
will have had a long life and will not match the new unit fitted.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 mediocre sound quality

2008-01-20 Thread zanash

just a few words on this meandering thread and off topic too

if you can't personally hear breakin or burn in count your self lucky
its something that you don't need to worry about. similarly cables if
your happy with the crappy freebies then why do you need to worry about
the more exotic types ?

secondly just because you can hear something does not mean it doesn't
exist ..it just means you can hear it. Therefore any statements along
the lines of just because I can't hear it means it must be snake oil is
frankly not very well thought through and I suggest you need to think
about it in rather more detail before you make such pronouncments.

IME I agree with patrick dixon and feel most of the changes are
capacitance based ...but life's too short to worry about it.

As to cables I can demonstrate two dissimilar cables sound
different...anyone with two outputs on a source can do the same, feed
both into an amp and switch between them. I've demonstrated this to
many sceptics and not one now claims that all cable sound the same!

I can also demonstrate that two outwardly disimilar cables will sound
the same. ie any two copper coaxial cables from different makers will
give reasonably similar results. This is in my opinion where the idea
that all cables sound the same originates... as most cables on the
market are, guess what ! stranded copper coaxial types.

I'm either blessed or cursed that I can hear what differences different
plug can make on the same cable ...

If anyones local to me I quite happy to demonstrate these
effects.but as I've already said you can all do it yourselves.

An aside a local chap who lives less than 40miles away and a veherment
cable sceptic has refused to come over and listen to my system and the
cable experiment ...saying its a waste of time and he already knows the
result .now why would he say that ? for me its because hes scared of
the outcome and affraid that his little cosy closed world is under
threat ...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 or Transporter into quality external DAC

2008-01-19 Thread zanash

you can't beat a better source .I'm making the assumption that the
transporter dig out is better [more accurate?] than the sb3...

but a better dac should sound better than mediocre dac with the same
source ...not forgetting the cables connecting will influence the
sound.

A transporter and good dac will sound better than sbv and cheap dac
...but transporter and cheap dac may be no better than an sb3 with a
good dac !

then if your not experienceing the illusion I'd suggest that there is
something a miss this can be any number of things ranging from
hearing problems to equipment issue through room interactions, only you

I bought the disc when it was first released and have used it to set

have never not heard the effect

even the cheapest systems have been able to make a stab at reproducing
the illusion. I'm sorry your unable to hear this effect but that

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] The Beresford 7510 MK 6 - some impressions

2007-12-31 Thread zanash

do you mean when you say "playing in " burn in ?

if so then both cable and the electronics will change to a greater or
lesser degree over time.

The toslink connections in my experience tend to be inferior to a good
digital coax ...I add good as there is some really nasty ones out
there.

If your running the standard psu for the sb3 then I would expect the
dvd as a transport only to have the edgeif you have a good psu the
sb3 should be ahead of the dvd both into the dac.

The beresford dac are good at there price point but not the last word I
have a behringer src that in standard guise was able to see off the
beresford [early mk] without difficulty ...I've since modded the unit
and it showed a clean pair of heals to dac1.

The flat sound your getting, sound like what I had before I upgraded
the psu for the sb3 ...for me it was lifeless and uninvolving. Also
the beresford can use a better psu too and the early mk version sounded
a lot better with a few simple mods ...better caps, schottky diodes and
better opamps. I have no experience of the more recent models but if
the maker has taken any account of the mods usually carried out on this
dac then it should sound a whole lot better than the one I heard.

A different dac will give a different sound not necessarily better...but
lets hope that a more expensive dac has a better performance. A better
dac psu will give you more of what the dac does with out too much change
in charactor ..for me better cables are the icing on the cake again
these should allow more of the dac sound through rather than change its
charactor. If a cables changing the sound then its not doing its job in

the three benchmark dac1 I've heard have been rather poor compared with
the behringer deq 2496 [used as dac only] the src 2496. I agree the
dac1 sounded thin and bright to the point of unlistenable in the system
it was being used in ...this does illistrate that it was showing up the
dvd player that was being used as a transport ...when we slotted in my
quad 99cdp the dac1 did respond with a more listenable performance but
was not a patch on the 99cdp as player and dac. I've said before my
friend sold the dac1 and bought an src ...saving £600 and got better
sounding music to boot.

there are any number of small cheap dac available ..though there is a
reliability question about some ie the lite dac ah of which I've had
two both died after about 6 months use [but they were only £30 each ]
so I've not lost a great deal.

sorry if my responce was a little prickely .just reread it an it
comes over too sharp ...sorry it was not intended.

I have to say that I'd look at the other components in the system as I
find the sb3 and transporter in there own way fairly even handed

you could look at the first reflection from your speakers...from the
side wall or floor ...these have a habit of harding up the sound...[by
destructive cancelation of the dirrect sound]..

to test. this get a mirror and place it on the floor then sit in
your listening position, adjust the mirrors position when you can see
the tweeters this is the point of first reflection. place a cushion at
the point of first reflection on both speakers and then re listen to
your system .do the same for the walls and then listen again with
both set of absorbtion in place ...this may sweeten up the sound
getting back what you may have lost.

the deq will respond to some mods too if you have the courage to tackle

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Stabilizing the SB3

lets assume you didn't like the direction the thread was going from your
replies.

I used the simple expedient of clamping the sb3 by its rear foot to a
"vibration sink " made from a sheet of 18mm mdf 6mm rubber sheet and a
6mm granite placemat with felt feet. Yes it makes the unit sound
better by a small but obvious ammount more a question of resolution
than out right more bass or treble.

As to why this should work my guess is that its stopping vibration
getting in rather than getting rid of vibs produced by the sb3.

Oh you don't have to take my word you could always try it !

Hum..

lets just say in an ideal world maybe !

unfortunately I live in the real world and find that there are
significant differences

if I keep my dac amp and speakers the same and just change the various
digital sources ie denon cdp marantz cd67 arcam a5 quad 99cdp dab tuner
sb3 dvdhd they all sound different. If I use the same cd in each of
the cdp's which I can hook three up at a time if so desired to the dac
and switch between its clear that there are significant sonic
differences between these devices. I have no explaination for this
other than the more expensive of the items sounds better than the
cheaper ones. This may imply that there have been design short cuts
?

yes the beresford is a good dac on a budget but when I had one
compared to the modded behringer src2496 it came of second best by
quite a wide margin thats before you add in all the extras that the
src gives you.

try the behringer src 2496.its cheap £80ish has loads of facilities
and at the price very difficult to get a better sounding dacit can
be modded with a small amount of effort to live with dacs in the £600

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 Bolder Mods

to think that all digital sources sound the same is at least odd if not
flying in the face of reason and in my case, experience.

try this get one of those cheap multi dvd players in the uk I've seen
them for as little as £29.99 [thats not going to break the bank] then
feed a decent dac [not necessarily expensive] the digital output of the
cheap dvd and a top notch cdp

in my experience and others the differences are absolutely clear
leaving no margin for indecision.

As I recall this was the same argument raised about amps in the 70's
it was wrong then and wrong now.

If your unable to distinguish between digital sources the issue lies
elsewhere and not with the digital sources.

I took a look at the units a while ago and thought they seemed a little
small .I've done some experimenting with psu recently and the bigger

Sorry your incorrect in your generalisation, I've used a isolation base
for my SB3 that IN MY SYSTEM has a marked effect on the sound quality.
I've used similar for cdp's and solid state amps the effect is
repeatable and obvious in different systems.

If in doubt try using a stethescope to listen to vibration transmission
through your hifi support.

place listening head on the floor ...tap floor listen
place listening head on shelf and repeat.
Add a granite or marble shelf on top of the normal shelf and repeat .

It should be clear the effect the increased mass has on the transmitted
vibration.

Then consider that resistors and capacitors not to mention the chips
are to a greater or less degree microphonic. If you can reduce the
amount of vibration within the unit you will lower the noise floor ie
it should sound better.

When I heard the transport against the sb3 it was clear the transport
was superior but not imo $1600 superior.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Million dollars to prove cables areworth money

2007-10-08 Thread zanash

http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/digital/messages/13/132468.html

please read this explains it far better than I can.

As in all walks of life there are people who will try to make a fast
buck. Look at all the so called hi end cables available for a few
dollars on ebay. This is the opposite end of the market where extremely
cheap cables are being passed off as good ones.

If your uncertain about cables and are able to make four solder
connections look up the recipies I've placed in the DIY section. These
are cheap [for the most part] and easy to build. Once you have built
your own cheap cable [that has a performance of a $100 cable] you can
then decide if cables have any effectif not this only tells you
that

the cable your using has no effect in that system
you can't hear the effect the cables having
the systems resolution is to low to and therefore the system is masking
any changes.

this of course goes for any cable if you can't hear the effects the
only thing it means is that you can't hear the effects. You can't
extrapolate the results to all cables or make any other
generalisations.

Its easy to make two cables that are exactly the same and then make one
sound different...all you do is add a capacitor and a resistor in series
across the signal and ground of the cable...transparent do this if you
have ever wondered whats inside the little box.

Just because I'm writing this does not mean I'm trying to convince you
either way nor am I bothered if you can or can't hear any
differences...its no skin off my nose. I was also a none believer for
the first ten years in the hobby, it was only after hearing the
inclusion of a top audioquest cable against the freebies I was using
that made me realise quite how much music they were emasculating.

My problem was I could never afford the inflated prices ..even $100 was
more than I could affordthat was when I decided to see if I could
make a cable that was better than the freebie types the rest is history
[25 years]. Its rare that I find a system that does not respond to a
"good" cable [note not "expensive"]. There are components that are
immune to the effect thought this is due more often to the connection
regime [plug type]causesing rather more strangulation of the signal than
any positive effect the cable can make.

A recent example of this

I was asked to fit a set of rca sockets to a naim cdx to allow the
owner to run a set of rca-rca cables to his pre rather than using an
adaptor to convert the din5 to rca. Once fitted the cable was swapped
back to the din5 and then to rca socketsit was abundantly clear
that the din5 and adaptor was taking away a huge chunk of the music
information. As an experiment we used a very good ic cable and his
stock cable, first both were listened to on the din5/adaptor...there
was little to no difference. Then we did the same on the new rca
sockets, it was obvious the two cables were very different, one being
markedly superior. So much so he purchased my silver gold cable.

if your in the uk take a trip to rs or rswww.com they have all the bits
to build a stonkingly good psu ...its simple to make [requires 8

you need an
iec socket fused optional filter
transformer of at least 50va and 9v secondaries
a rectifier and regulator board
a cable and plug for the sb3

I've added an extra 2uf

and of course a case

total should be about £60

his business is as an illusionist ..that says it all

I don't consider myself to have golden ears...there the same fleshy
colour as everyone elses.

More to the point why don't you think cables can make a difference ?

if you were to get a cable of a slightly higher resistance will that
change the sound ? the answer is it has to to maintain ohms law,
lowering the signal level and therefore its changed the sound. Cables
have two other factors capacitance and inductance if you change one or
other of these you change the efect the cable has on the sound. You can
then talk about metallurgy of the conductors, there are so many factors
at play it amazes me that some people think that this would have no
effect on the signal passing through.

The next question I always ask is what cables do you use ?
its often a surprise to read the answers as almost nobody uses the
freebies...but these should sound as good as $1000 set if all cables
sound the same ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Million dollars to prove cables areworth money

2007-10-02 Thread zanash

Now why would you want to believe some one who's business is to dupe
you, ie an illusionist ?

The last time I bothered to check ...the small print and exceptions
would make it more than impossible to show sound changes between cable.
Let alone things like amps or cdp.

I can easily test two dissimilar cables [ic] in my own system an show
to anyone who cares to pop in for a listen that they will sound
different. My test method if you want to try something yourself.

the cdp is quad99cdp2 with a fixed and variable output...the difference
in sound between these two outputs is non existant using two identical
cables. Fit cable A to the variable fit cable B to the fixed output
[set the varriable to full output] these are then both taken to a quad
77pre using inputs 1 and 2 which are both electrically identical. Using
the hand set to switch between the two, its possible to discriminate
between dissimilar cable. Obviously the more different they are the
bigger the perceived sound differences.

Interestingly using this method with identical cables but different
plugs you can hear the effect that various makes of rca connectors have
on the signal passing through the cables.

Its very clear that some of the more costly plugs don't sound as good
as some of those with less base metal ie eichmann silver bullets are
the best I've heard at any price but neutrik sy series at about 10% of
the cost run them very close. The worse ones are those with two part
earth returns that are crimped ie the cheap sort you'd get from maplin
in the uk. Only slightly better are the big heavy wbt clones canare
and audio note are particularly good but at a price.

Remember Randi is an illusionist and therefore he's going to have any
so called test weighted heavily in his favourhe's certainly not
going to want to payout the illusionary million dollars.

I'm happy to let people make there own minds up ...where as some people
[randi ?] would like you to conform to there way of thinking. of course
this is only my opinion and everyone is allowed to have !

Just don't believe things till you've heard it for yourselves

I've used a couple of switch mode psu unitsin my system in the past
and I've never really felt comfortable with the results ...they seem to

I've gone back to linear types and found these more forgiving [?] or
more musical the latest unit is a simple voltage regulator and
bridge with 15000uf of pana fc smoothing caps and a toroidal
transformer rated at 75va 9-0-9, I've also used a schafner iec mains
filter and fused switch . This is a small step up from the square frame
tranny version with 10,000uf. Once the psu board was placed in it case
there were more small improvements, as I isolated the board from the
case on a layer of sorbthane like material. The case is built round a
granite sheet using 45mm x 15mm wooden sheet and an 18mm mdf lid..the
whole weighs in at 5kg and acts as a vibration sink. this will be my
last psu for a bit as I've exhausted my current ideas

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Does the SB3 produce Audiophile sound quality?

2007-09-05 Thread zanash

I've heard better...much but then you can add two or three noughts onto
the price.

Nothing wrong with a soundstage that extends beyond my speakers, is pin
sharp and can extend well beyond the real wallas mine does.

I've had arguments in the past about stereo being unable to portray
height...but mine does that to.

But its an illusion created in your brain ....

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audio Problem

2007-08-29 Thread zanash

try looking at the speaker connection it could be that the 3.5mm mini
jack has a poor contact I've had this on no end of 3.5mm sockets on
walkmans a small ammount of vibration could be just enough to rattle
the socket to create a break. Try cleaning the 3.5mm pin with deoxit
or similar. If you can get the mini socket out check it over with a DMM
for continity...

of course it could be a dry joit or similar any where in the speaker
system.

have managed it

I've put up a simple diy recipe that will outperform all but the most
expensive why not take a look at the diy section.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Is amp OK for the Transporter?

2007-08-24 Thread zanash

sorry...there is every reason to build a quality set of attenuators
unless logitech have suddenly decided to fit half decent resistors like
dale vishays etc [Assuming the jumpers are in the analouge output]. If
there attenuating in the digital domain keep well away
as this may reduce the resoultion.

but if your not too worried about absolute performance the advice is
perfectly sound.

2007-08-23 Thread zanash

do you mean davidf iso feet from zg ?

yes I will be sitting the whole on the iso feet when I'm familiar with
the sound.

the main idea is to add mass to the sb3 as its rather light
weight...ime adding mass to all audio gear has more gains than losses.
Just the ability to isolate the dac from ground bourne vibrations
helps.

I use a stethoscope to listen to the bass ...using a screw driver to
tap the floor ...using the steh. listen to the sound it make in the
floor next to the bass then move the steth. to the base and listen
again... theres a good 25%attenuation [guess] of overal impulse and the
top end may be attenuated by another 10% ..the low freq seem to be able
to pass through regardless.

should be fine ..if you find that your usable volume is all at the
low end consider fitting attenuators to the ic ...I'd be disinclined to
use the digital volume pot as it reduces the number of bits available
[if I've read things correctly].

if running from the analogue section you need the best ic you can make
buy etc.

if running from the digital out again the best cable you can make
or afford.

the Sb3 itself ..try attaching it massy base the rubber foot can be
used to cable tie the unit to an mdf sheet sat on a rubber mat
sandwiched between a tesco's finest granite placemat on felt feet. The
whole being clamped together or glued ...this will give you a
constrained damping support.

the linear psu get one with plenty of spare headroomthis is a
wow!

no body has reliably measured interconnect cables either ...but nobody
who can hear uses the freebies don't get tied down to
specifications ..relax a bit and use your ears if you think it
sounds better it normally is.

Having messed with a number of different psu design its clear that you
can make huge gains this not more bass its extra resolution and
refinement scale depth etc. Rather than the flat and lifeless sound
provided by the stock psu...that unfortunately will measure the same as
the improved sound to your average test gear..

that sounds like the caps charging ?

if you feel its an issue ...turn the dac on prior to starting up the
other items

the berrisford will benefit from a better psu [bigger transformer] just
like the sb3...

the ones supplied are just big enough to get the job done ...with no
extra headroomimo

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Blind Test: SB3 with linear PS vs CDP

2007-08-12 Thread zanash

DBTdon't go over board with this ! I'm pleased yo got reasonable
results ...but your sample size is rather too small to be able draw any
conclusions with a dbt

As I previously said here and else where the only real test should be
with your ears and in many cases adding the complication of dbt often
creates more problems than answers..imo

Still I'm pleased you were able to get something meaning full from the
dbt.

my take on a similar listening exercise [but not dbt] using a sb3 wall
wart ,sb3 linear , against the quad 99cdp2 used as a dac for the sb3
and its own transport ...

this showed that the quad was top followed by the sb3 linear and
bringing up the rear by quite a margin was the wall wart.

Now fitting a behringer src 2496 between sb3 and quad ...brought all
the results much closer and the sb3 sounds better with the src than
without [I have no explaination for this ].

I'm currently building a bigger linear psu 20va, 1uf, with mains
filtering this should out perform the current linear and may get
far closer to the cdp ?

Thats great .

you can lift the beresfords performance with a few simple mods ...

add schottky diodes and fit better and bigger caps in the psu ...also
fit a socket so that you can swap to better opamps.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SqueezeBox3 DAC vs. DEQ2496 DAC ?

2007-08-10 Thread zanash

The actual guts that do the work are often found in more expensive units
...its the ancillaries that they have cut the cost on.

replacing the cheap and nasty caps ..beefing up the case etc just shows
what these bargain basement units can do.

I originally used the src ...as a vehicle to test a few mods on ..and
it didn't matter too much if I fried it !

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SqueezeBox3 DAC vs. DEQ2496 DAC ?

2007-08-09 Thread zanash

I did my own I've done a lot of mods on kit in the past though I
tend to upgrade parts rather than wholesale circuit changes.

The basic mods include

damping the case ic's and crystals
fitting better smoothing decoupling and supply caps through out [elna
stargets and pannasonic fc's ]
fitting schottky diodes

theres other stuff to but thats the main thrustsound of the unit
when from shut in and flat to expansive and dynamic ..and where did
that bass come from !

I've done similar mods to my deq too ...

don't disregard the humble power cable ...swap this for a good one
...most people are quite surprised at the effect.
