[Scratch head] If the Amiga power supply sounds like that, I'd say
someone has been playing games with it. ;-)

2007-07-16 Thread sbn

In reply to all the people in this thread who suggests me to "just try
it":

There's a reason why I asked. I wanted to know if anybody was familiar
with this particular Amiga 500 power supply, and i wanted to hear about
their experiences, before cutting off the original A500 power connector
and going to some store to buy a DC connector and mounting it.

And, if anybody could tell about their bad experiences with this
particular PSU, it'd also be helpful to keep me from eventually wasting
time...

My point was that asking for other people's opinions about it when you
have it sitting in front of you is sort of silly. It's like seeing
that it is raining outside and asking other people's opinions if you'll
get wet when you go out there.

Some things are easier to just try out than to boot up your computer,
start the browser, navigate to a forum, type the question, then wait
for answers.

And your invaluable contribution is...?

He did have a point though - try it! As long as it really is giving
out about 5V and you get the polarity right, there's really not a lot
that can go wrong except it just might not work (insufficient current,
maybe). You won't blow anything up. So see if it gets rid of your
annoying sound, and see if it sounds any better!

Most of all, do let us know the results :)

Simply because the connectors do not match and I have to get adapters
first before being able to try anything. ;)

Yes - listen to it! If you can't hear any noise, then there isn't
any...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amiga 500 power supply for SB3 - good idea?

2007-07-13 Thread Veggen

I just did some quick measurements on my old C64 power supply.
This is marked with 5V 1.7A DC, and 9V 1A AC.
It has a 7 pin DIN plug with pin 3 as + and pin 4 and the shield as -.
On pin 3 I measured 5.2V DC and 10.1V AC with no load.
I would be very careful using this on the squeezebox. Although the DC
voltage is OK, the AC voltage most probably is not.

Now I don't know if the Amiga power supply is the same as the C64 one,
but I would check carefully before connecting it to the SB3.

Yes, but don't forget to distinguish between AC and DC output. 5VDC is
quite different from 5VAC!

What difference does it make if the power supply makes noise and you
have an instrument to measure it? You're switching the supply from the
stock unit because you think it might sound better. So just plug it in
and try it. If you like the sound, who cares if it makes noise?

Hey, I have one of these too! (along 2 or 3 other ones that deliver 5V
and 12V, one (old Microset) with an analogue voltage selector and
display in a metal case and a PSU of an external DVD writer that broke
that can deliver both voltages).
Now my question. If the connector is done right with the right polarity
shouldn't every power supply that "at least" delivers the same
[EMAIL PROTECTED] as the stock one do as a replacement? I might have to
replace the PSU of my Beresford DAC, which produces some high frequency
noise.

Thanks, signor_rossi.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amiga 500 power supply for SB3 - good idea?

2007-07-06 Thread sbn

Hi

I just sorted some of my old junk in my mom's basement today, and found
an Amiga 500 power supply, and i can see that it delivers 5v @ 2.5A

That should be necessary for the SB, and given it's huge size and heavy
weight, I guess it's a linear PSU...?

Would this PSU get me an improvement in sound quality, compared to the
stock PSU? it'd be nice to hear people's opinion before mounting a
proper connector on it :)
