Get a slower, non-7200 RPM drive. A 5900/5400/5200 RPM drive runs cooler
and will be plenty fast enough for a music server. More cache is better
(faster), but in reality you're unlikely to notice any difference.

Be a little careful with 1 TB 2.5" drives to be installed in a laptop.
Most laptops can only accept 2.5" drives that are 9.5mm thick. The first
1 TB 2.5" drives were built with an extra platter and all of them were
12.5mm thick. With greater platter densities this has changed, but there
are still some 12.5mm drives on the market.

With only 350 GB of data, a 750 GB drive might be more cost effective,
anyway.

I have a Fit-PC2, and have been using it exclusively as a music server
for almost three years. It's on 24/7 except when I go on holiday or the
power goes off.

It's an excellent piece of kit, extremely well made, very durable. I
don't think you'd need one of the newer models, the Fit2 (like mine) is
still available and is just fine for LMS. It can do a lot more, LMS
barely impacts on it's cycles.

I bought mine diskless and installed a 500gb 2.5" drive -- completely
foolproof, just slides into place. You then need to install an OS,
though -- you can get a unit with Linux pre-installed, but the drive
size is limited.

Highly recommended.

How much storage space do you need?

I ask because if you get a tiny nettop type system then you may be
forced to use an external hard drive (or drives). That's not a terrible
thing, but the extra cabling and wall wart can be messy and it somewhat
defeats the purpose of using such a small box for the computer itself.
If you need a lot of storage space then it means you'll have to use 3.5"
drives, since 2.5" drives (which are quieter, cooler, a little more
expensive) are currently limited to 1 TB in size (about 2800-3000 CDs
encoded in FLAC). If you do need one or more 3.5" drives then IMO it's
best to get a case that can hold them internally.

Yes, no problem to install the hardware -- I think it was 4 screws to
take the cover off. The RAM chips can only pop into their slots one way
and it was a couple of more screws to mount the drive plus plugging in
the cables.

I used an external USB CD/DVD drive for the OS install and I believe you
can also install the OS from a USB thumb drive. I rip my music on
another PC so didn't need a permanently installed drive on the
Vortexbox. Currently installed RAM is 2GB and the unit seems to run
fine, though you can go to 4GB on the Foxcon barebones unit.

Usually barebones units come with the drive cables you need, and it
appears that this one does, too. Did you take a look at the manual on
the website you linked to:
http://www.produktinfo.conrad.com/datenblaetter/85-874999/873301-an-01-en-FOXCONN_BAREBONE_R10_D4_ATOM_D525.pdf

I recommend 2GB RAM. You won't need all that if you're only running LMS,
but at current prices there really isn't any reason to be stingy and go
for 1GB. Installation of the OS can be done from a USB stick for most
Linux distros.

and the SATA hard drive is easy to plug in. (I did not install a CD/DVD

No, I don't. I keep my server well away from the listening room, so a
fanless unit was overkill for me. I bought a "barebones" Atom-based
system (see link in sig below), and after adding RAM and hard disk it
cost a lot less than the Fit-PC.

At least one person frequenting these forums has a Fit-PC2 (maybe RonM?)
and loves it.

Thanks but that's overkill for my needs, I just need a quieter version
of what I have now. Thanks anyway.

That's way too much pc & cost if all you want is a quiet box on which to
host LMS.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best server for Transporter

2012-06-11 Thread SuperQ

I built a nice custom linux server/desktop machine. It does a number of
duties besides just LMS. It hosts files for my mac mini (still trying
to decide if I like XBMC or Plex as a UI for that). I also use it as a
primary desktop for browsing and photo editing. It also runs a number
of VMs for testing some routing configurations.

My shopping list looked like this:

Lian-Li PC-Q08
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1682265

Intel mini-itx mainboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121513
I would probably get this one now:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121597

The only bad part of this board is that it only supports 4x SATA and I
had to use the PCIe slot for a SATA board. If I didn't use it as a
desktop, I would have probably gone with a supermicro Atom D525 server
board because they support IPMI.

Whatever CPU and ram floats your boat, I went with 8G of ram and
i5-2400S

I have 6x WD RE4-GP 2T server drives setup with Linux software raid. I
have a small mirror setup for the root fs, 140G of space for the rest of
the OS and 100G for /home. Then the rest of the space (7T) is a raid6
volume for backups (crashplan of my family's laptops) and other media.

I also have an external USB-3 drive or two that I offline backup the
important stuff to, like my FLAC files.

Of course, none of this is audiophile related, except that I have my
audio system (Transporter, Revel speakers, Musical Fidelity amp)
networked to it.

"reasonably priced" is a pretty vague term, but as we're in the
Audiophiles forum I'll assume you mean "expensive" :-)

If you want quiet, capable, and convenient you probably can't do better
than the Fit-PC line (www.fit-pc.com/web/). The Fit-PC computers are
also ridiculously small. They take 2.5" hard drives, which are also a
lot quieter than their 3.5" counterparts. Or if you have the budget, get
an SSD. And in the grand scheme of things, the Fit-PC is not absurdly
expensive. It's more than many other alternatives, but it is quite
reasonable for what it is.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best server for Transporter

2012-06-11 Thread pkfox

Hi all, having just moved home I don't have a remote place to site my
old ReadyNas NV box which runs Squeezecenter and feeds my TP ( or
whatever it's called now ) which is necessary because of noise ( don't
know if it's the fan or the drives ) I've just tried siting it under the
stairs but I can still here it in the lounge. So I'm thinking it might
be time to say goodbye to the old girl and buy something else. Anyone
know of a reasonable priced quiet device that runs SC well ? preferably
running Linux.

many thanks
