Layla is being sold by HDTracks as the definitive audiophile version but the master that was used to create the high resolution has the same overly compressed dynamic range as the crappy 2011 CD remaster. I've had this same conversation over on the Stereophile forum and since HDTracks is a Stereophile advertiser all the writers and editors simply gave HDTracks a pass and said something along the lines of "Oh they're aware of the problems and it's now their fault and yada, yada, yada." Not quite crap just pretend high resolution, as in standard CD resolution up-sampled to a higher resolution. Just how many frequency spectrum graphs is it going to take for people to get the message. A message along the lines of for every true resolution recording being sold by HDTracks there are at least two pretend high resolution recordings being sold by HDTracks. Here's a frequency spectrum graph taken from one of the songs on a very recent HDTracks offering: The Rolling Stones - 60's UK EP Collection The BS write up about just the high resolution tracks are generated (taken from the HDTracks site): "For the analog to digital transfers, vintage reel-to-reel tape machines were utilized - a modified Ampex 351 with original tube electronics (full track mono and two track stereo) and an Ampex ATR-102 modified with Aria Discrete Class-A Electronics (full track mono and two track stereo). A Sonoma DSD digital audio workstation was the chosen high resolution format and Meitner Design ADC8 and DAC8 MKlV converters were used for the conversion process. Cables used were the cryogenically frozen type supplied to us by Gus Skinas of Super Audio Center. Gus also provided much guidance to Jody Klein, Steve Rosenthal and myself for our first time use of DSD technology. For this HD Tracks release, the Bob Ludwig mastered DSD files were converted to both 176.4kHz and 88.2kHz high resolution PCM with Weiss Saracon conversion software" Pray tell, why does the graph below show almost nothing in the frequencies above 22kHz, which just so happens is exactly what the graph would like if it was made from standard resolution CD? I use puddletag to automagically append [24/96], [24/48] etc. to album names for albums other than 16/44.1. I don't bother browsing for them though, I choose my music based on what I want to listen to rather than resolution. It's literally that 'albums'-based browse view that I posted here yesterday ("HD Albums") that is exhibiting the slowness. Not using any other features of custom browse right now so nothing to compare it to. It may not even be a 'query' issue, as the browse view comes up instantly when I access SBS via my browser interface. It was in the native iPad/iPhone app (iPengHD) that I noticed some lag. I do this with the MP3TAG program. I then have created a SQL-Playlist with Erlands plugin, that only plays these tracks. Works fine. Do not use IDVx with flac! You need to use flac tags with flac... Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to browse my "HD" audio tracks?
Except you should not really use id3 with flac it "works" but is not standard. http://flac.sourceforge.net/faq.html#general__tagging But most good tagging apps like mp3tag or similar knows how to write the rigth kind of tag and also how to strip of any one that should not be there, so it's really not that hard, I don't really know how it works, I just don't mix tag formats as SBS (and other apps ) get knackered when i do. Custom Browse with Custom Scan is probably very powerful if one wants to make that kind of effort . Another idea i will do is to create a dts genre ,as those tracks only give noise except in my main ht , the transcoding actually has got a bit leaner the last year and sync better so lately I've forgot to exclude hirez and it works good anyway but the dts tracks is a no go -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to browse my "HD" audio tracks?
Wow, thanks for all the replies! Nice to see others interested in the same thing. My wife and I still have high hopes of going through our 2,000+ flac album collection and actually settling on a consistent set of genres for ourselves (we have pretty similar taste, so its feasible). Count me in as someone who also would like to be able to use genres independent of 24 bit, etc. One question comes to mind after reading everyone's suggestions: aside from the GENRE field, is there any other field in the ID3 tag spec where one could store what we might all literally thing of as a keyword tag list? Or is GENRE the nearest field for this type of thing? I checked out Erlands Custom Browse plugin and it looks reasonably close (noticed they have a Lossy/Lossless/Bitrate browse method). Maybe the author of that plugin would consider extending it to also index by sample rate/bit depth? -- emeraldcityeg emeraldcityeg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4782 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89863 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to browse my "HD" audio tracks?
Ihave them in separate folders DVDA and HD tracks . I have also configured sbs to use ";" as a tag separator for multiple values for tags. so I have an extra genre "24 bit" . The genre tag of such track is then set to for example "Jazz;24 bit" . Then is simple to find them by browse genre. it is abit of a kludge but it works. ( the kludgy parts is that "24 bit" is not genre per se, if it is like in a typical audiphile demo track it's seldom worth hearing it for obvius reasons, it is not really music either. ) -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to browse my "HD" audio tracks?
Hi all, I am a proud owner of a Transporter and I'm starting to amass a decent collection of "HD" flac albums (i.e. sample rates > 44.1k). I'd like to be able to browse my collection by a "tag" called "HD" and wondered if anyone had any suggestions on the best way to do this? Many approaches come to mind, but not sure what is best: - tagging the source flac files with a custom "HD" tag? (manually in media monkey, or automatically via a platform-dependent shell script, etc.) - maintain them in a completely separate root directory and browsing by folder/files? (not preferable) - dynamic playlist plug-in? Would love to hear any approaches people have for this sort of thing...
