Well, I guess if you put your heart and soul into it, you could probably rustle up a homebrew FET, or even a basic integrated logic circuit. Its only straightforward chemistry with a bit of photographic masking thrown in. Might be a bit fiddly though. I just can't see why anyone would. Looking at some of the frames where he is making the heater / grid assembly, it looks like he is making these in small batch quantities, either that or he has to make 20 to get 1 that works. While he may just be doing it for the joy of the dance, it did sort of look like he was making enough of these to sell. If that is the case, I wondered what his USP was. Still amazing though. Quite remarkable. You have to admire all the tooling that he has built. The con-rods on that vacuum pump look like modern art. Given how eccentric the whole thing is, if it wasn't clearly French, I would have sworn that it must be English. Perhaps he had English parents. One thing I missed in the film. Why was he doing it? Are the valves better (whatever that means) because he makes them himself, can't he get replacements for a particular type - what is it that has made him do this? I'm not sure if his gear is DIY or just old.
