Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter in 2009?

2009-03-28 Thread sleepysurf

I second the motion for a 24/192 capable Transporter "Mini," to use with
the Controller and your own choice of DAC. I currently have a Benchmark
DAC-1, but would love to audition a Berkeley Audio Alpha DAC. I think
the high-res download market will really take off in the next year or
so, and Slim/Logitech needs to offer a slimmed down device to be
well-positioned for that market. Otherwise, I'll be looking for
another audiophile-grade product that fills that niche.

My niche product would be a transporter style half width box with no
wireless, no dac just spdif outlets. probably an AES outlet too. (I
don't use AES but it might help if the Transporter Mini had some
diversity!)

On board linear power supply of course. There could be an off board
power supply connector too for the lunatics (That includes me) that
want to connect a external 24V power supply to it.

Build this now, you know it makes sense.

As you might be aware of, not all of us live in the USA. For me (as a
Dutch citizen) it's perfectly legal to rip a DVD-A, SACD or BD. I'm
legally allowed to create a backup copy for my own use.
It's not always technically possible but that's a different story...

Linn and Gimell offer Studio Master 5.1 dowloads, DRM free.

The Gimell ones are 24bit/96khz; the Linn ones vary with the recording
method they used at the time.

Do you not know of the analog hole? Put the disk in your favorite
player. Connect six or more outputs to a six or more input ADC. Turn on
record, press play.

One can argue that the resulting 24/96 is not bit perfect, and that is
true. But if 24/96 output is good, any decent 24/96 ADC will record it.

DRM is pointless.

Any "pro audio" store will have what you need. Or your local Guitar Center.

I agree but there is no legal way that I know of to put lossless 24/96
multi-channel music on your server. The only source material is DVD-A,
SACD, BD. And even if there was a way they would have to find a secure
way to output it (I suppose HDMI could work) but that could get messy
with no video. Meridian has had issues around getting their encryption
approved so they could support multi-channel lossless off BD to their
digital speakers. Finally I think they are approved and a solution
should be annouced this Thursday at CES. It gets very complicated with
multi-channel.

By the way high bitrate DTS sounds fantastic off the transporter.

It's more the multiple channels that your liking than the boost to
24/96.

Yesss I would like that to, I thought about mention it in this tread
but I always plead for that all the time... Can we please have 24/96
digital output.

In fact can we please have 3 or 4 digital outputs for multichannel
24/96 (dream on).

As you can see i have a suitable digital processor/preamp and the very
nice DAC/analog parts is redundant in my case.

as 99% of my files are 16/44.1 my SB3 will suffice as a digital
transport for now.

I can't see that there will be one. There will be a lot of companies
joining the streaming devices bandwagon, and I suspect that Logitech
would make a lot more money by licensing the streaming tech to
audiophile companies than by making the hardware themselves - could
they really improve on the Transporter?

Oh and 24/192 is clearly a necessity, but for marketing purposes only,
and the dual display is better than the Duet (although not as good as
the dual display -plus -the Controller!)

I have no strong feelings either way, I was just interested in whether
people think the Transporter will evolve, and if so to what, or whether
development is over. Perhaps things will go another way - there are now
applications available that let you drive a Linn DS from Squeezecenter,
so perhaps other high-quality networked DACs will appear along the same
lines.

I see. So which would you really prefer, a more expensive TP that
pushes the power supply section and the DAC to the limits or a stripped
down TP that is much less expensive but with a DAC slightly better then
the Linn?

On the stripped down side, are you not really describing using a DUET
with whatever high dollar DAC has the sampling rates of your choice? I
mean, if itÂ’s going to be used for the digital output and you want the
Controller with a processor without a display, isn't that the DUET in a
nutshell. Suggestion: Pair a DUET with a Dodson 263 Digital Processor.
Or push the limits with the Dodson 218 Digital Processor. I have a
Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor that is about as close to Audio
Nirvana as I have been with my Transporter as its source. An SB3 or
Duet/SBR driving the Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor sounds
excellent also. The killer combination that my ears have had the
pleasure to listen to was a Transporter driving the Dodson 218 Digital
Processor. Everything was present from the fullest bass through the
most accurate revealing midrange on to the clearest highs with the only
issue being the combined $10,000 price tag.

Open Source development doesn't fit with the Logitech mould either, but
we have that. I don't know if Logitech ever has beta development
programs, but we've had two here, the Controller which was discussed in
public and the Boom which was a private development until the official

So you could say the whole of the SlimDevices, or indeed the Streaming

I suppose anyone with an DVD-A player have heard it that way.

So I would put an multichannel capable SB high on the wish list.
This is probably never going to happen as the amount of suitable music

In today's current online available music files, why in the world would
you think you needed 24/192? Just because its the next big number? Who
needs files that large on their PCs for something most of us will never
see or hear the difference in? 24/48 is almost at the point of no issues
and 24/96 is beyond the point of musical issues for most people.

I doubt it will happen this year, it's already one of the best in the

Transporter was released it would have even ever been built.

It's a beautiful unit as it is and I'm just glad to see Logitech

market.

Even 96Khz is arguably needed. 192Khz is just nuts.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter in 2009?

2009-01-04 Thread JezA

Once upon a time there was a Squeezebox made by Slim Devices. It had a
fancy display and a simple remote control. Then the mighty Logitech
bought it up, and brought out the current Squeezebox Duet - a much
simpler box, no fancy display but a much fancier remote control.

How long will it be before the Transporter goes through the same
evolution, and we get a Transporter 2, where the Transporter is in an
adequate box, but has no fancy display and comes with the Duet remote.
Perhaps, not least to keep up with the Linn Sneaky DS which offers
24/192 sample rates, , not to mention a modest built in power-amp and
costs less, the new Transporter might also offer 24/192 sampling rate?
And even, for there would be no fancy display or even fancy case to
drive up the price, cost less as well as perform better?
