Yes, for many, the stock Transporter is 'good enough'. For others, it
represents a good value because modifiers exist who can make the sound
more to their liking. I would not have considered a purchase otherwise
at the stock unit price point.

Neither group of owners should feel compelled to deride or attempt to
marginilize the other group.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter owner...

2008-03-09 Thread Rodney_Gold

I tried the other way of decoding , must say , I didn't notice that much
difference tho my server is far away from my unit so switching between
settings involved running downstairs etc.
It didn't take me any time at all to realise the TP wasnt up to snuff
compared to my Jolida , it is distinctly bass shy and doesnt have the
air , it's not bad for what it is tho and the convenience of it and the
ability to run headphones , ATC's and meridians off one box outweighs
the downside.
I then compared the TP to a Myriad CDP and a cheapy Technics , the
myriad and technics were closer but there is still something "missing".
Levels are irrelevant here as what is missing is not really level
dependant.
One cannot phoo-phoo the concerns expressed , I have read a few reviews
and not all are totally complimentary to the sonics. apart from that ,in
terms of construction, my tactile knob is broken and that doesnt make
me a happy camper.
I tried the DAC alone and using it with another CDP was better than
streaming??
It might be worthwhile investigating what is going on , the unit may
measure perfectly but it doesnt sound perfect to many.
It's a pity I'm in South Africa , I would like to hear a modded unit
compared to stock.
I actually think a wireless streamer is sort of a band aid , the
problem with discless music has been storage capacity and bandwidth. A
128 gb+ Solid state storage device plugged into a player with no moving
parts might be the next "big" thing for audiophiles , currently SS
storge is very expensive and limited but that will change. It would be
easy to "flash" the device from any source , computers , kiosks in
music places etc and the vagaries of setting up a wireless system and
running a puter would be negated. It could be used in cars , homes etc
and will have many other uses apart from music only. (data/photography
etc)
Building a cheap player will be easy and it will be compact.
Sean what you gonna do to top the Sb/duet/TP?

I only had a 2 day demo, which imo is more than enough to determine if I
like it or not. The unit was well run in, as its a demo product so I
didnt need much time

I liked its detail, and loved its functions and ease of use. But the
more I listened to it, the more I disliked it. It's bright, forward and
very uninvolving - musically.

I'm looking at some of Linns offerings or perhaps will use a DAC
straight into my source

I have an SB3 at the moment and I find that its internal DAC bumps up
vocals along with some of the midrange as well.

It can become fatiguing as my speakers are a bit forward to begin with.
When I play poorly recorded material such as most rock, it starts
hurting the ears within a song or two. For that kinda music I prefer to
use the DAC within my HT receiver.

For jazz, blues and live recordings the SB DAC makes a huge difference,
not tiring at all to listen to and definitely heaps better than the
receiver's DAC.

I got a TP on order so we'll see how it compares

It is interesting to note that from March 7th- March 9th you have
reversed your opinion so dramatically.

I assume you have a 30 day trial period. Wouldn't it make more sense to
give yourself more time to make a decision?

When I audition gear If my opinion changes so radically so quickly I
take a break from listening and try to come back with a fresh
perspective. Then I spend a few weeks listening to make sure I have
given the new gear enough serious listening to make a decision I think
I will not 2nd guess.

Read Wes Phillip's review in Stereophile where he raves about
Transporter and compares it favorably to the 6,000.00 Ayre.

Do you only have the TP for a few days from a dealer? If so, I
understand your feeling the need to make a quick decision but, IMO, you
might change your mind if you can take more time.

Thanks David, I didn't even know that option was available. I've
actually sent the Transporter back to the dealer.

I have read a few reviews now that have all experienced what I
experienced - analytical, bright and uninvolving sound. I LOVE the

I am going to consider the offerings from Linn (Akurate DS) if I can

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter owner...

2008-03-09 Thread bigfool1956

I would say the difference is one of order vs energy, in that the native
decoding orders the music better, whilst the alternative has a little
more energy.

As an example, I listened extensively to the track "Secretly" by Skunk
Anansie. When played with native decoding it becomes obvious how Skin
phrases her vocal delivery to drop the words exactly to the timing of
the band, little pauses here and there to ensure this happens. With the
same track transcoded on the server, this becomes somewhat obscured.

As I said, the transcoded file has a little more energy, but to my view
this is at a cost. Somewhat like comparing a CD player to the TP. I
suppose 'slightly brash' would be a reasonable description.

I do know that some people prefer the transcoded wave stream, and the
trade of may be personal and system dependent. My system is not short
on energy, and so doesn't need any help in this respect.

What I like is that this is a tweak that is free, reversible, and takes
but a second to try. Why not have a go yourself and see what you think.

If you are running wireless, then the extra bandwidth of the wave
stream may cause problems, where you previously had none.

Agreed, and it is for many of us. Perhaps you may prefer a Squeezebox
with something like a Musical Fidelity tube DAC for a sweeter and more

In server settings, file types, uncheck the box flac -> flac, leaving
the box flac -> wave checked.

It is quite interesting to compare the two settings, as they certainly
sound noticably different. My son, who is not a hifi nut, also could
hear the difference.

I can only guess as to why there is a difference, but it certainly
won't be anything to do with the actual decoded file.

Hi Kris,

My CD players has a certain extra weight to the upper bass, something
that I had unconciously compensated for when I positioned my speakers,
as a result getting a compromise between the CD player and the
turntable.

The TP does not have this characteristic, and so I had to reposition
the speakers to even the response (still working on that actually). So
you could give that a try.

Secondly, for some reason decoding FLAC natively in the TP sounds
different to decoding it in SS/SC and sending the waves to the TP. Now
I personally prefer the native option, but it is the work of a second
to try that out too.

If your speakers are about 1m away from room boundaries, flattening the
listener-position frequency response isn't the "accurate" thing to do
anyway. It might be if your speakers are near the walls though.
Psychoacoustics is a more complex area than at first sight so I
wouldn't draw general conclusions from this anecdote.

I don't fault manufacturers for making transparent sources, any more
than I blame them for making transparent cables or banana plugs.

Otherwise we end up with sources and amplifiers and speaker cables and
banana plugs which are suitable only for a minority of applications.

The same can't be said for speakers because there is not a clear
definition of "accuracy" for them - they interact with rooms and rooms
are all unique anyway so speakers and rooms are the optimum points to
introduce taste.

Hi Everyone, Sounds like im not alone

I would have thought that the Bel Canto DAC would take away that thin,
anayltic, cold sound but it doesnt really change it at all. Infact its
almost identical.

I remember using a older Rotel CD player and the sound was far more
involving - its proving very difficult to get a good front end to play
a networked source file!

I think my unit is already 'burned in' as its a demo unit I'm
trialling. Not really interested in spending more money to add a tube
output stage. For the money they are asking it should be fantastic
straight out of the box! Otherwise I may as well look at other options
but Ill be blowed if I can think of any!!

This is disappointing. I'm going to hook up a cheap CD player as a
digital in, and see how it sounds. It could be a the flac media, or it
could be the DAC.

Thanks
Kris

Accurate is not always the best, my TACT room correction sounds
absolutley lousy when it does its thing and "flateens" the room/speaker
interface If you do not apply a preference curve it's
unlistenablethats why TACT allow 10 curves as presets
Colouration is personal preference and that is inviolate.
No mmatter how I aclimatise my ears , they arent going to be happy with
the sounds as I have heard what sounds better to me.
If your do it all front end can be modded for 1600 and it makes one
happy, its a relatively small price in terms of high end audio , a
transport and DAC can cost many times more than a modded transporter.
High end audio is all relative and if one has a serious system, then
the cost of the mod is pretty minimal.
I have only one misgiving with mods and that is if they are not
reversible and thats why I would probably personally go for a valve pre
if I wanted the valve sound.
I must say , I committed the cardinal sin re Hifi with the transporter
, I bought it unauditioned in my system , so essentially I took a $2000
risk...I cant return it if I dont like it. I think thats what folk who
have their unit modded do , take a $1600 risk.

Much more likely is that you retrained your ears/brain to like what you

I have zero belief in claims that electronic components 'burn in' for

I do know that stories about 'burn-in' requirements are very effective

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter owner...

I am also of the opinion the transporter is pretty accurate and somewhat
cold and a little forward
I bought it cos I thought it could replace my front end in a headphone
system which was a Jolida CDP (valve) and a musical Fidelity X-can v3
running Siemens CCs's and either a Senheisser HD 600 or 650 cans. I
find it more detialed compared to the jolids , less "airy" however and
distinctly bass shy. Overall the tenasporter might be more accurate or
better but its far less involving than my old system.

SPDIF output is however as good if not better than my theta Jade. I
dont want to go back to the jolida due to not listening where my cd
collection is and the obvious utility of having your music on tap. I
will fiddle with some tube rolling andtry some different interconnects
etc to try tune it to my taste.
'
I dont think the mods re valves etc are a waste if they make the unit
more enjoyable to those that have the taste for valve type sound.
Happens plenty in the car world , ppl buy perfectly acceptable and
useful vehicles and modify em straight away in various ways. Mods don't
mean the unit was no good in the first place and no criticism to the
designer. It's pretty much a compliment that the tuner or modifier
thinks the unit is worth while tweaking. After all one doesnt want to
start with anything second rate.

after a couple of weeks. Burn-in effects on the cables/op-amps maybe?

Great to hear that.

Now why don't you buy us a round of drinks with all that money you are
saving
by not buying the Bel Canto :-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter owner...

2008-03-07 Thread rydenfan

I would certainly remove the Bel Canto and run the Analog outs of the
Transporter directly into your Musical Fidelity. The Transporter has a
very good DAC and analog stage all of which you are wasting by running
spidf out. You could use a Squeezebox for that scenario. Let us know
what you think. My idea is that you will no longer need the Bel Canto,
but only your ears can make that decision.

Thanks, ive managed to drop the gain on the Bel Canto a bit and match it
to the TP set at MAX with the MF Amp - works fine...

I may fiddle with jumpers later - now to listen, see if the Bel Canto
DAC makes a difference or not...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter owner...

2008-03-07 Thread darrenyeats

You may need to attenuate the analogue out of the TP to match it to your
amp.

There are internal jumpers to do this for the RCA outs. For the
balanced outs you'll need to purchase balanced attenuators.

Read the wikis for more info first though.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter owner...

2008-03-07 Thread Kris

Thanks for the fast reply. So no issues running the TP at max volume and
controlling it via the amp?

I am running wireless, ill look into running it wired also.

I am actually running the TP into the amp via the analogue outputs
right now, but the bel canto is connected. Ill do some A/B comparisions
but right now, im enjoying the TP via its analogue outputs straight into
the amp

Ill check the software version! Thanks

edit: this is what im running

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 17793 - Windows Vista - EN - cp1252

Yeah, its not bad, is it?

Just as a matter of interest - have you tried comparing the sound using
the analog outs from the TP straight into your amp with your current
setup? The DAC in the TP ought to be at least as good as that DAC,
though of course this will be highly subjective.

For the volume control: as a general principle control volume as late
as possible, assuming that nothing is being overdriven in the chain. If
its convenient to use the amp volume control, then use it and leave the
TP and DAC at MAX. Having said that, for normal 16 bit sources you do
have quite a bit of headroom before you will start losing any SQ.

The freezing is disappointing, it shouldn't do that. Are you connected
wireless or wired? (wireless networks cause a lot of problems around
here.).

For the software version, go to "settings" on the web interface and
follow your nose. You should be running 7.0 these days.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter owner...

Why don't you try the analog out from the TP and not use the BelCanto
dac.
You might find you like the TP more. One of the advantages of using the
TP dac is that you don't need to use the spdif connection.

Give that a try and let us know what you think.

Just imagine, if you like the TP as much you could sell the BelCanto
and buy a lot of good single malt to go with your listening :-)

It is probably best to use the analog volume of your MF amp.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter owner...

2008-03-07 Thread Kris

Hi Guys

Firstly, WOW what a device. It's fantastic - I'm amazed at its detail.
I'm running it streaming FLAC audio from a 2TB Nas, its mind blowing.
I've connected its digital output to a Bel Canto DAC3 which connects
into a Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated, powering JM LAB Electra 1007 BE
speakers - the sound is stunning!

Few issues I'm hoping someone can help me with:

Volume Control - Which is the best device to control my audio keeping
MAX quality? The Bel Canto DAC? The MF Amp or the Transporter?

Currently, I have set the Transporter too MAX volume and adjust it
further with the MF Amp.

The other option is to adjust it via the Bel Canto - what do you
suggest??

Secondly, I've had the unit Freeze alot so far, which is disappointing
along with the remote search/browse functions not working (it kinda
gets into some strange loop)
How can I determine the software version, and what version should I
upgrade to?

Thanks for listening

Not from the command line that I know of, but easily accessible on the
web interface at the bottom of Server Settings.

The ReadyNAS NV may be using an older version of SlimServer.
Unfortunately newer versions must be modified by Infrant/Netgear.

Sometimes jiggling the knob helps.

I hope that next Transporter won't have anything on it's front mask.
Who uses that anyway, it's just for show off.

Normal. This is the knob in a degauss cycle (the knob is magnetic).

Later firmware versions didn't do this quite as much, so be sure to
keep SlimServer current in order to get the latest firmware version.
