Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power Supply Upgrade for SB3?
I've used a couple of switch mode psu unitsin my system in the past and I've never really felt comfortable with the results ...they seem to leave an edge to the music ..difficult to describe. I've gone back to linear types and found these more forgiving [?] or more musical the latest unit is a simple voltage regulator and bridge with 15000uf of pana fc smoothing caps and a toroidal transformer rated at 75va 9-0-9, I've also used a schafner iec mains filter and fused switch . This is a small step up from the square frame tranny version with 10,000uf. Once the psu board was placed in it case there were more small improvements, as I isolated the board from the case on a layer of sorbthane like material. The case is built round a granite sheet using 45mm x 15mm wooden sheet and an 18mm mdf lid..the whole weighs in at 5kg and acts as a vibration sink. this will be my last psu for a bit as I've exhausted my current ideas -- zanash Acoustician and builder of interesting cables zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38271 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Sorry, my degree is in Physics so, unlike a technician who's played with a scope, I tend to get sucked in by any hocus pokus masquerading as science (not). Line conditioners aren't a cure all and no one has claimed they were. If YOU knew anything about digital you'd know it can generate high levels of noise that propogates back through the AC lines. If you can filter some of this and isolate the components you get an improvement not a cure all. Making idiotic exaggerated statements to ridicule a position you don't agree with doesn't make your point. -- gdg gdg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1122 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38271 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The highly touted Musical Fidelity A324 Dac utilized a massive fully regulated choke power supply and it sounded like crap. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power Supply Upgrade for SB3?
Tyler obviously DOES understand the technology. Do you? Extremely few people, even few engineers, understand the charging cycle of a capacitor input power supply (a large current spike full of harmonics) and the problems it causes. He clearly is aware of this. Choke input power supplies largely cure this but are physically impractical. Audiophile designs partially cure the problem through improved characteristics of high speed rectifiers, but the current spike is still there, and radiates badly, just like the author said. Vague statements about line conditioners as a cure-all for mysterious noise are always suspicious. Discussions about the merits of expensive AC power cords are complete nonsense. And yes, I am an audiophile with real gear; including good tube electronics and a real vinyl repro system. I don't doubt that attention to detail creates good sound; I doubt bad physics when I hear it. - from an oldie, moldy Electrical Engineer. -- NatureDude NatureDude's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12104 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38271 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

What kind of an idiot spends $500 for a line conditioner to isolate one component?...You get it to isolate and filter 5 or 6 components (many of which are generating digital hash back onto to the AC mains). YMMV. Everyone who does this assumes that the switching supply radiates more RFI than the linear supply that they are replacing it with. This is not necessarily the case. Without numbers you are just guessing. You may as well reverse the resistors in the SB and hope that the thing will sound better when you're through. But which ones? All of them? A few critical ones? One guess is as good as another. Maybe you need a linear supply AND reversed resistors...
