I have been using one with excellent results for a couple months now. I
used a 50VA transfomer with the outputs paralled for double the current.
It sounds alot better than the off the shelf supplies I have tried. Hope
this helps.

Back to the original question, the 'LT1085 '
(http://tinyurl.com/pnvv8)is a 3A regulator. Ron seems to have spec'd
the PS at 1A due the the transformer he supplies. Buy a bigger
transformer, and the PS will supply more current, plenty for the SB.

Thanks guys, for setting me straight. I had always been curious if
power conditioning helped even after the upgrade to a linear. I have
quite the opposite AC situation of Heuer- mostly knob and tube wiring
(read: antennae), and lots of towers in the area that emit
who-knows-what. I'm sure I could benefit from power conditioning, and
it seems a more logical next step than upgrading IEC cords.

I have more power conditioning than you can shake a ferrite core at
(dedicated fusebox, Pure Power transformer, double screened heavy duty
cable to dedicated unswitched sockets and Isotek mini-sub) and I
noticed a big difference in moving to a linear supply. Rest of the
system is very high resolution though (Audio Research, Krell, Audio
Synthesis, Wilson Benesch, Velodyne etc).

If your AC is bad, power conditioning will help the SMPS or
linear.

I'm sure the stock supply has more than enough current to run the SB.

I like to speculate it's the noise suppression of the linear that makes
the difference in my system. My house wiring is poor, and I have no
power conditioning.

Do those with power conditioning units notice less of a difference with
the linear compared to switching?

If the current supply were so close to being maxed out when using the
switch mode supply, wouldn't a difference be audible when the display
is off versus full brightness? I don't notice a sonic change when
scrolling through brightness settings...

?
the SB3 is not a power amp!
surely it's not going to be swinging >2v across it's analogue
outs...into a typical pre-amp input impedance (10k?) just how much
instantaneous current is ever going to be delivered?

Observed with what? You need a MHz (ms) fast scope to clearly see
current during low frequency transients. Compare directly to the stock
wallwart on the same scope. A handheld digital multimeter will not
reveal the differences.

Well, at full brightness the SB3 current draw is 0.93 Amp. It settles
down to 0.80 Amp with the display off. This was observed on a Lab grade
PSU at 5.0 V constant voltage setting.
