Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ref: What Should I Buy ?
Hi OP I use a rotel ra-02 amp and rcd-02 cd through b&w bookshelfs. Good basic kit. I bought a duet and have to say it sounds better than the cd player when playing flac files and that is with no external dac. In terms of usability the duet remote is brilliant and running it from a nas drive, while quite difficult in the early setup, is fantastic once up and running. Silent and super cheap in terms of electricity usage. I prefer to listen than to tinker and the duet is ideal for my needs, I heartily recommend it. Personally I would buy the duet and see how it goes. You can always get the transporter later if your ears are good enough. Personally I think there is a lot of kidology going on with higher end gear and while the transporter may sound marginally better (or maybe just different) occasionally on short passages of some tracks, mostly I think you would struggle to tell the difference. I imagine many may disagree, but really only your ears matter. cheers, Ant -- Ant Ant's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16762 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66594 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ref: What Should I Buy ?
Since you have Rotel equipment, you might be interested to know that Rotel has just announced a digital tuner, the RDG-1520, that should be available in a couple of months. It doesn't appear to be supporting FLAC, though. Here is the announcement (I haven't seen any pictures yet): RDG-1520A tuner for the 21st Century RDG stands for Rotel Digital Gateway. The RDG-1520 certainly opens the gate wide for all that streaming media can offer. The receivers tuner section includes both terrestrial FM and Internet radio so listening options are virtually limitless! There are presently over 15,000 Internet radio stations listed. In order to help keep your clients favorite stations handy, the RDG-1520 includes 30 possible presets for instantaneous access to both FM and Internet broadcasts. It also includes a USB input for direct digital connection of an iPod (or other USB class 2 devices), bypassing the inexpensive analog output stage in favor of a Wolfson DAC and high-end analog stage. The RDG-1520 supports UPnP technology. UPnP devices are plug-and-play in that when connected to a network they automatically announce their network address and supported device and services types, enabling clients that recognize those types to immediately begin using the device. The RDG-1520 streams music files from a networked PC using Windows Media Player 11 over a wireless or wired Ethernet connection. A USB to Wi-Fi Ethernet dongle is included. Supported codecs include RealAudio®, WMA, MP3, AAC & AAC+ (non DRM), AU, WAV and AIFF. A planned software update will provide support for the Rhapsody and Pandora music services. The RDG-1520 can be controlled via bi-directional RS-232, as well as discrete IR. Custom integrators will appreciate that the chassis is a standard 2U size that works with Rotels RFK rack kits for an easy, clean installation. You might think the RDG-1520 would be a multi-thousand dollar component, given all that it does and the high-performance design. The few similar units on the market are indeed very expensive. But the RDG-1520 offers the value proposition Rotel is known for, retailing at only $999! --- -- Annakova Annakova's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17156 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66594 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Its true Phil that we should "trust our own ears", but we often do not have the luxury to listen to all or even a small sample of the equipment that is out there. We have to take in other opinions and weigh them against what we have heard and experienced. That is the reason why we spend time in forums like this one, along with listening for ourselves. I do agree that we should not "fully" trust anyone's opinion. The extent that we trust a review has to do with how that reviewers experiences have been supported by other opinions as well as our own. Some "trust" is usually warranted, to the extent that a reviewer has explained why he/she has reached the conclusions about a particular piece of gear. Many different factors have to be taken into account. The highly subjective nature of what sounds "good" is part of what makes the audiophile hobby so rich and interesting IMO. -- earwaxer Waxer Transporter Winsome labs mouse (modified) Maggie MMG's (modified) JPS Labs power cords Audioquest Granite speaker wire Silver Bullet interconnect HSU research sub earwaxer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32040 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66594 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ref: What Should I Buy ?
I didn't have the money for a Transporter. I have what I think of as a good system (Mission 775's, which at that time were the biggest speaker Mission made, a Marantz 6000SE or something amp with no tone controls and a Marantz 6010? KI cd player), and I was worried that the SB3 would be a step down from my old cd player. Having listened for a while, there is a difference between the two, and maybe the cd player sounds slightly better, but it is so close that I will stick with the SB3 as my main source. One advantage of the SB3 is that unlike the cd player, it makes absolutely no mechanical noise, which makes a difference at low volume. I haven't compared the SB3 to a duet, but judging by the specs, the SB3 should sound noticeably better through a reasonably good system. -- ianl ianl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32545 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66594 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

If you go with a Duet or SB Classic, you might be perfectly satisfied. They sound pretty good. If it isn't good enough, a DAC Magic will elevate the quality considerably. I could not be happier with my Duet and Dac Magic. The transporter may be better, but my investment of $350 for a Duet plus $400 for the Dac Magic is a far cry from $1250 for a used Transporter or $2K for a new one. That's all money I can spend on other improvements in my system. I have other things that need improvement in addition to the digital feed. -- OldCoder OldCoder's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7315 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66594 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ref: What Should I Buy ?
I've a similar question. I've just got a Duet package, which I got mainly to check out the whole squeezebox experience (a Windows Home Server storing FLAC is my server) for the bedroom, with a view to perhaps getting a Transporter for my main setup later. My question is, is the transporter worth the money, say over another receiver and a DAC (e.g. MagicDAC)? It seems awfully expensive. What would some of the benefits of a transporter be over that from a sound standpoint be? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ref: What Should I Buy ?
Go with the SB3. That's what I have for my hifi system. I do use an external DAC but this is not necessary at first. The SB3 DAC is decent but I get somewhat better sound with the external DAC (a Behringer DEQ2496, you can also use a SRC2496 which has the same DAC for about $100 less). Or if you are happy with the SB3 but want a better DAC you could sell the SB3 and move up to the transporter. But the SB3 should be just fine as a proof of concept, you may end up just keeping it, it is certainly good enough. I'm very pleased with the sound qulaity and it totally eliminated the ground loop hum problems I was having when I tried to run a cable across the room to my computer before I got the Squeezebox. -- kh6idf kh6idf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66594 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ref: What Should I Buy ?
I dont think you can go wrong with the transporter if you have the cash! There are tons of ways to MAXIMIZE the transporter sound that you may want to explore. You need to add some color. Probably the easy way would to put some tubes in the signal path in the way of a cheap tube pre. Run you rotel as a power amp. You could also run the transporter as a pre but not as good an option in my opinion. Also you can experiment with t-amps, depending on how sensitive your speakers are. I run my 86db maggies with a 45wpc t-amp running dual 2050's. Its fine. I would go with morris minor. Get a SB3 and you can test everything. When you feel comfortable with it buy a transporter and use the SB3 with some nice little 2.1 Boombox somewhere else in the house. I think nearly everybody here started with one SB3 or Duet and got more and more Squeezeboxes when time goes buy. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ref: What Should I Buy ?
I agree with iPhone. Most problems I've encountered with my wireless ( Netgear g ) setup were solved by moving the router to another location in the house. As far as your other questions I've gone the SB2/Duet route. ( I have one of each ) One advantage of the Transporter is that it allows for playing 24/96 files. However you would probably be using the built-in DAC which I understand is of excellent quality but may be surpassed by some stand alone DAC's. I prefer to wait for the next generation SB which will likely be less expensive than the Transporter but will allow 24/96 processing. This allows for upgrading the DAC over time and less likelihood of buying something that becomes out of date . -- avta avta's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1860 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66594 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

If you have the money, I would say go for the Transporter. It is top shelf equipment. As for WiFi issues, 90 percent of the time reception issues are caused by poor choice of access point location. The access point location needs to be what is best for providing the best overall coverage and not what is easiest or closest to the PC/Cable Modem/Router for setting up the WAP. And yes part of the idea behind WiFi is to remove the issues of running CAT5 to hard to reach places. But if the WAP isn't setup correctly or optimized, then one ends up back where one started in needing to run CAT5! I feel it makes more sense spending the time (and some times money) to make one CAT5 or Internet Cable run to the optimum place for ones WAP so that no other work needs done and no other cables need to be pulled because the WiFi was done correctly the first time. Last but not least, if you enjoy music as much as I do, it could be well worth the trouble it would take to run CAT5 from the server to a Transporter. Another solution could be to build and place a server right where the Transporter will be located. I tried the Apple Airport Express and the resulting quality even after investing in top quality cabling was very inferior could SqueezeBox Duet or Transporter be the answer that I'm looking for. Please feel free to message me back with all your comments and suggestions.
