I think Logitech could sell a boat load of these. Many many folks have
digital preamps and the onboard dac is a total waste.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?

2008-06-28 Thread vincentyan

OK. Good to know. And thanks for the advice on how much I should rely
on Stereophile reviews. I fully understand that it's my ear and my
brain to judge and there are many factors (other gears, how the CD was
mastered, the room, my mood...) to be considered.

Sean, could you clarify whether there is significant design difference,
when using as a transport, between the SB3 and the Transporter? I was
wondering why it would still cost more than $1500 if you take out the
analog part from the Transporter. Functionally, it is an SB3 transport
(less than $300) + 96k processing + interfaces such as clock input. I
always thought that the big value added by the Transporter is its
audiophile grade DAC.

Well I am not in the US so I am careful in purchasing. That's why I am
seeking help here: if I spend the dollar for a Transporter, and IF (a
big IF) I still think it is not good enough, what are my options? I
went through the Modwright Transporter and the SB+ and the info is very
helpful. Any suggestions on the DAC with clock output?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?

2008-06-28 Thread Rodney_Gold

I have compared both, sent directly to a set of meridian DSP5500
speakers and via a Z-sys RDP-1 digital pre/parametric and cannot tell
the 2 apart in the digital domain, I would get a SB3 + offboard DAC for
maximum flexibility. I was very dissapointed in the the TP's analog
output. I was not able to audition the TP prior to purchase , but had I
had done so , would have just stuck to a SB3. $phile ratings , indeed
just about any magazines "ratings" are not a yardstick I would use for
anything other than weeding out the units you want to audition , your
ears , your system , your room , your taste are the final determinants
of what floats your boat.

On the tranport issue , a Sb3 with more digital input/output options
and a "add on" PS upgrade kit might be a very good seller at a much
cheaper price than a TP. That wouldnt be more then $500-$600 would it?
On the TP , I don't really see any value to dual displays , front panel
buttons or the "knob" barring the fact it bulks the unit up. My logitech
dealer actually said to me he opened the sealed carton the TP came in
cos when he lifted the box , it felt "empty".
I don't feel the radical jump from the Sb3/duet to the TP of $1500+ is
worth it in terms of any sonic improvements and would imagine there
must be some market for an "inbetween" product.

Thanks a lot. Yes my 2nd question is a bit complicated, but my first
question is straightforward: is the digital outputs of the SB3 the same
as that of the Transporter?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?

2008-06-27 Thread sc53

I would also add that the Stereophile ratings are not a reliable index
of how good any piece of gear will sound in your system with your other
gear and, most importantly, YOUR ears and music preferences. Don't ever
base a decision on whether Stereophile rated something A or A+ or B or
whatever. As time goes on, Stereophile's reviewers have changed,
preferences have changed, ratings have tended to inflate, certain types
of gear are more popular than others, and a host of other factors
unconnected to how "good" any given piece will actually sound to you
and in comparison to some other piece you are considering. From all
I've read, if you are not going to use the Transporter's DAC, just buy
the SB3 or Duet. The Transporter's DAC is very good and many have found
it of comparable or better quality than the DAC they were using with
some other transport. The only way you are going to answer this
question is to buy a Transporter (hopefully a used one so you can save
some $$) and try it for yourself, A/B'ing with all your other gear. If
you don't think it superior, you will certainly be able to resell it
(eg on Audiogon) for what you paid. They are always snapped up when
they come up used on Audigon, usually for around $1600.

Complicated, and something you're only going to resolve with plenty of
listening!

Firstly, the Transporter might work for you. Try it. You might also
like to consider the modded products such as the Modwright Transporter
and the SB+. If you go the DAC route, I would suggest one with a clock
output and slave the TP, but this does depend on the DAC. If it -is
-doing its job properly, it should be independent of transport, but I
fear many/most/all do not.

Let us know how you get on!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?

2008-06-27 Thread vincentyan

I have a DAC working with my SB3: a California Audio Lab CL-15 CD
player, with PSDIF digital input into its 20 bit DAC. I have another
DAC in my home theater room: a Linn Unidisk SC, and I think that the
sound quality is about the same (well, sometimes I feel the CAL is
better, sometimes not). I have been enjoying the good sound and the
convenience brought by the SB3 until I got a Sony XA9000ES SACD/CD
player - originally for playing SACD discs, then I found it is also an
excellent CD player. Soon I feel that the sound of the Sony is better
than my SB3+CAL DAC, not a big difference, but distinct enough that I
found I tend to listen to the Sony more and more, with old fashioned
take_out_disc_from_the_shelf_and_put_it_into_the_CD tray, when I got
serious in listening. There is no digital input on the Sony, by the
way.

My system consists of Conrad Johnson CT5 and LP70S amplifiers, Dynaudio
C4 speakers. I ripped CDs with iTunes on my iMac and stream the music
to my SB3 via an 11g wireless router. I don't hear much difference
between the SB3+CAL DAC and the CAL CD player playing the original CD
disc.

My question is: will the Transporter deliver better sound with its
digital output into my CAL DAC? Before I purchased the SB3, I got
confirmation from the Slim Device tech support that the digital output
of the SB3 and Transport are the same. Want to double check here.

2nd question: assuming TP analog output is not good enough compared
with my Sony (well, I make this assumption because Stereophile put the
TP at A class and the Sony at A+ class, I maybe wrong, bear with me),
how do I improve by combining the TP/SB3 with a high quality DAC?
There are extensive discussions in this forum about using an external
word clock or a DAC with a clock output, and I agree with seanadams
that an external clock may generate more jitters. So, the solution
seems to be 1) get a high quality DAC with clock output, and connect it
with the TP and put TP on slave (any suggestions on the brands?); 2) get
a high quality DAC with "re-clock" capability (I read somewhere that
Benchmark DAC-1 can do this. Any suggestions?), and connect it with my
existing SB3 (or TP, if there is a difference in their digital output).

Dear Experts in this forum and Sean, any answers/comments to my
questions are much appreciated.

Vincent

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?

Personally I would like a transporter transport in a shoe box 1/2 width
box. I would buy one of those in a shot. For some odd reason I prefer
the smaller boxes, and no, i don't really know why.

Ideally I would like to see an agreement with Cyrus to put a squeezebox
in one of their cases. I'd pay a good £900 for that and both companies
would be in profit.

Do it now or I will send the boys round.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?

2008-06-26 Thread The Moog

Fair enough,
if there would be no significant reduction in cost, then there is
little point. I was looking at partnering with the new John Westlake
DaCapo DAC, which is actually looking to be about half the price of the
Transporter and would replace my pre-amp as well, and it just seems a
shame to have all of the conversion and analogue electronics put into
the Transporter and never use them.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?

2008-06-26 Thread adamslim

Not the first time this has been asked. I think the problem is that it
wouldn't remove much from the BOM, so you'd probably be looking
somewhere north of $1,500.

Considering the inherent advantage (jitter-wise) of a one-box solution,
the 'full' TP is likely to sound better than one with an external DAC
unless the DAC is *very* good - so you would be looking at a target
audience of people who have spent more than the price of the TP on
their DAC - and they can easily afford the extra $500.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?

2008-06-26 Thread The Moog

Hi there guys,
don't know if this is the right place to post such a question, but I
was just wondering about the possibility of a digital transport in the
true sense? I shall explain:

I currently use an SB3 as a digital source for my stereo system (as my
CD player gets used less and less these days!) and have been for a
while now, but I really like some of the extra features available on
the Transporter (ability to play 96kHz FLAC’s, better connectivity,
facia controls, and the use of twin screens). The thing is, and I’m
sure I am not the only one here, but I have a DAC that I use with the
SB3 that I would like to continue using, and so wouldn’t use the
onboard DAC or any of the analogue side of the Transporter. Because of
this, I was wondering if Slim Devices would ever consider offering a
cut-down Transporter that was identical in every other way, but did not
have any of the digital inputs, analogue outputs, or DAC circuitry; but
just had a selection of digital outputs?

I don’t know how much this would remove from the BOM, but most if not
all of the components should be carry-over, it should be substantially
cheaper, and would mean that for those of us that already have DAC’s
that for whatever reasons we like the sound of, we would not be paying
again for hardware that we would not get any use out of.
