Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

2011-10-03 Thread artintampa

I went through my music collection and decided that my whole collection
(100s of cd's) would be impractical since many of the cd's I have
outgrown over the years. Many of them are phases my wife and I went
through. All that would happen is alot of skipping over music and it
would make the Transporter cumbersome to use not to mention the amount
of time it would require to rip. Although I appreciate the music for
what it is, it would not be my first choice to sit, relax and enjoy.
I was able to burn 50 for now and have two additional drawers (about
50+ more) that might be burned in the near future but are not top
priority.

The cd that I use to demonstrate the stereo to company is Eric Clapton
Unplugged. I find that the guitar is very crisp and clear and his
voice is recorded in a way that gives a sense of a well defined space.
It comes across as very three dimensional with a super stable sound
stage. The music also appeals to a wide variety of people. I tried it
through the Transporter and found with the volume on the Transporter at
the max and with an increased volume in my stereo it sounded quite
impressive. I played the CD in my Cd Transport with my DA converter
and switched back and forth between it and the Transporter. The
differences were very slight. My CD Transport/DA combination is
slightly richer and requires alot less volume from my pre-amp. The
average person not familiar or as picky as I am would never be able to
tell the difference or would not be able to tell which of the two is
preferred.

Overall, I am very satisfied. Regardless of many reviews that I have
read, I did not anticipate it would even come close to the equipment
that I am using. It still will not be used for my demos but will
certainly satisfy me for daily use or when wife wants to listen to a
particular cd. I consider this to be a very positive addition to my
system and a piece of equipment that brought my system up to date.

I sent my older son the info you gave me yesterday since he was off work
and he's a computer programmer. He set it up for me. The computer now
only records the cd's in FLAC and it he set up LAN. I am not sure he's
set up the subdirectories to separate the FLAC from the mp3s but baby
steps. I burned several CD's last night. My company owes me some time
and will take half a day tomorrow to burn more. I will have limited
amount of time this weekend to do it since it looks like great beach

What can I say but thanks yet again Gary!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

2011-09-28 Thread garym

All your music files need to be in one directory. See pic of my office
setup (note my files are all in E:\All Music Files (p.s. at work I'm
using the beta of 7.7.0 which is called Logitech Media Server instead
of SbS, but your SbS > Settings should look almost the same, without
the check boxes for video, etc.)

Of course, underneath this high level directory I have other
subdirectories. In my case, I have:

E:\All Music Files\FLAC\
and
E:\All Music Files\mp3_aac_ONLY\

And under each of these subdirectories, I have
\Artist\Album\tracks

So you could rip your FLAC files to the FLAC directory and your mp3
files to the mp3 directory. They will all show up in the SbS music
library (that is, once they are in the right directory, you'll still
need to do a "scan for new and changed" or a "clear and rescan" for SbS
to "find" the files).

There is a multilibrary plugin, but you probably should get all the
basics working first before you try that. There are a couple of
options for playing ONLY your flac files. Under "my music" you can use
browse music folder option, and you can browse to the FLAC subdirectory
and play songs/albums from there. Or, you could edit the "genres" of
the tracks and add something like "Art's Rock" "Art's Jazz" etc. as the
genres. But again, for now, you probably need to get comfortable with a
good ripping routine, figure out tagging, etc. and how to make sure the
files are organized so that SbS sees your library.

What directory should I be ripping into for the Transporter to find it.
I honestly just put it in the E drive. I did this Sunday after a
birthday party late/tired and a few glasses of wine so my heart wasnt
totally into it and I had my two sons also giving input. It was my
first time I had this last weekend to attempt this.

My son has his file in Zune and the Transporter finds it effortlessly.
Is there any ways for me to distinguish the ones I am going to rip from
his on Zune? The music on the Zune file is all mp3 and I will be
ripping FLAC and it would be nice to be able to pick the higher quality
music when i want to listen to it.

P.S. I think it's Zune

I agree. 99% of my discs rip fine with no issues. But I personally like
a systematic approach (I simply do them all the same way, noticeable
scratches or not). And mostly I very much like the accuraterip info
when available as it confirms that at least someone else, on a
different computer, with a different copy of the disc, got exactly the
same data on their rip as I got on mine

EAC, cdparanoia etc are useful if you have scratched discs. At least you
know when you're not getting a perfect rip.

However, in my own tests unscratched discs have always been read bit
perfectly. So for unscratched discs I consider it unnecessary (and I

I hope my point is clear; of course, there is nothing wrong with using

You want to rip once and do it right. As far as I know, most people
serious about getting accurate rips use either EAC or dbpoweramp. I
find dbpoweramp easier to use. And both these rippers use
"accuraterip" which is a nice way of comparing your rips to 100s of
other people automatically to insure that you have a bit perfect rip
(and this also speeds up the ripping process). Winamp is fine as a
player, but I never see it recommended as a ripper.

I suspect the reason SbS is not finding some of your rips is that they
are not in the right directory (the music directory where SbS is
looking). And of course you have to do a new and changed music scan for
SbS to pick these up.

Fantastic. All's well that ends well. Happy to hear it "just works" as
it should. I have the older Transporter as well. The new one is exactly
the same guts without the control knob, so you're not missing anything
with the older version.

Yes, get your CDs converted to FLAC and you'll very much enjoy the
resulting sounds. I use dbpoweramp, and although not free, was money
well spent. And dbpa has a good user forum and its developer Spoon is
very helpful.

The first thing I noticed is that I received the older model of the
Transporter (not the SE). This one does have the center haptic
feedback button. I personally do prefer the older model since the new
one has a black plate where the button used to be. Looks like
something was there but hacked/altered.

I did plug it in, linked it to my conputer which it found effortlessly.
The vu meters turned and they actually moved. I hadnt plugged to my
stereo since I seriously thought it would be going back to the back in
the box, call and return it. I plugged it to the stereo and it
actually worked!! I played with the music my son had previously loaded

then set up Pandora (email address, pass word.. which by the way the
center button made it easier) and was also successful at streaming
music. The music in my htpc sounded much richer with more depth. I am
looking to download flac encoded cd's this weekend and see how it truely
is able to perform but at least I got my foot in the door.

SPECIAL THANKS TO GARY!!! Although we couldnt solve it since the
original unit came defective, you certainly put my mind at ease that I
had done everything possible to make it work.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

2011-09-22 Thread artintampa

There are several reasons for the Transporter. One of which is that I
own a system that most would consider a bit above average (magnepans,
two aragon 4004 amps, Theta CD Transport etc etc). Although it is more
conveneint to entertain during the holidays and parties with Pandora
(set it and forget it). I also have an HTPC my son built that is
hooked up to the TV and to my stereo system. I have an extensive
collection of CD's that I do not use nearly as much simply because it
is easier to turn Pandora on and forget it. Ripping the CD's into my
HTPC would allow me to easily access the music (which now I have to dig
for). The transporter would make changing from CD to CD or Artist to
Artist much easier. For convenience reasons it will be running Pandora
quite a bit of the time (as I do now) but when I want to sit/relax 'one
on one' with my stereo I will be using the HTPC and Transporter. Makes
sense?

Sorry, but I do have to ask WHY you would spend the money for a
Transporter when all you want to do is stream 128kbps audio from

lot of money for internet streams... still, glad it's on the road to

the weekend. . .

I had my Boom playing on the deck, and went inside and turned on the
TP, which is normally synced to the Boom. Nothing. No sound, nothing.
Turned on, turned off, etc etc.

Got panicked, until I realized that the audio on the TP had been turned
down, as had the volume on the stereo. The little bit that was coming
through was drowned out by the sound from the Boom leaking through the
door to the deck.

All is now well.

R.

If anyone thinks they can sort this out over the phone, I am MORE than
willing to give my number out or call. I would much rather keep this
device than dealing with returning it/waiting for shipping label. I
also believe that is has to be a simple solution. After talking to the
Help Center at Logitech and doing all the resets, I have no alternative
but to return upon their request since it could not be solved with a
tecnician over the phone.

Then again, this is almost certainly not a hardware issue, i.e. not
something a replacement will sort out. If other ports are working and
not port 9000, then in all likeliness it's a configuration issue
somewhere.

Art, I had a working Transporter and I was messing around with some of
the connections. I got into the same situation you are in, tried to
play from any source and the VU meters would jump and freeze with no
sound. I tried firmware reloads, xilinx resets to no avail. I finally
did a factory reset and went through setup again. That fixed the
problem.

Thanks for letting us know. And yes, if port 9000 is not working, then
it won't work! First I've heard of that issue, but things happen.
Logitech will be good about turning it around fast. Let us know when

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

2011-09-06 Thread garym

I hear you and understand. I'd say if you can't get some sound tonight
or in the morning that given your tight schedule you return it. It is
under warranty with logitech, but the amazon 30 days is pure and
simple. The warranty is good, but may be more hassle for you.

Don't know what you are really trying to achieve in terms of total
system, but I can tell you that as much as I love my Transporter, I
wouldn't have bought it IF the TOUCH had already been released. You
could buy the SB Touch, and if you wanted even couple it with a good
DAC and have a VERY, VERY nice system. I use a Touch, coupled with a
Benchmark DAC I at my weekend place.

Something to consider anyhow. But, again, I'd keep trying on your
Transporter for as much time as you have left to think about it. I'm
sure it's something simple I'm overlooking. There is a small chance
that the transporter is defectivebut I'm not really feeling that is
the problem.

cover me? Do I mail it to them or repair/exchange? Just concerned
because system is not running, time is somewhat limited after this

turn my back on and it's taking ALOT longer than I anticipated to get
it running LOL. Again, you are tops and very appreciated.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

2011-09-06 Thread garym

happy to help. Again, I'm almost sure there is something simple going on
here. Just not sure what it is. I have had the "no sound, but playing"
issue once or twice with my transporter over the last 3 or 4 years, but
in all cases it was solved by the xlinx reset (remove power to
transporter, point at it with the remote pressing "1" key, then restore
power to TP, while pointing at it with remote). I know you tried this,
but if the xlinx reset worked, you would have seen something flash on
the Transporter screen telling you that it was doing the rest

Anyhow, let us know how it goes
p.s. I think the warranty on these things is at least one year, so I
assume you have some time to play with it.

yep, i'd be prepared for a long wait when you call. In those kind of
situations (fortunately not with logitech as I haven't had to call
them), I put the telephone on speakerphone and then go about my
business working on the computer, watching TV, or something

volume is handled digitally in 24 bits so does it very well (lots of
posts on this forum about the issue if interested). General rule of
thumb, keep the digital volume of the transporter (or other SB players)
at 70% or higher, then use the volume of your amp/preamp to adjust from
there. Then you can use the CONTROLLER to raise volume or lower volume
without getting out of your chair.

stick with it. I'm not aware of any other products that can do all the
stuff that this SB ecosystem does (good database backend software,
customizable, good 3rd party support, excellent help on this forum,
synched playback from different units in different rooms, not trivial
and even if you don't want that now, you'll want it later. ;-)

and for now, focus on internet radio or pandora. the messages you're
getting from podcasts could be other issues (wrong address for podcast,
etc.)

keep it simple until you can get some sound from the transporter.
Sorry to hear of your problems setting this up. I had my transporter up
and running, playing music within about 5 minutes. I'm sure there is
something simple on your end...just a matter of finding it, which does
require some systematic diagnosis, so we don't want to be changing too
many variables.

not the SbS running on your local computer). This is fine (for pandora,
internet radio, etc.). So for now, I'd leave connected to mysb.com and
try to get some sound out of the transporter before moving on to other
things. I'm not sure you fully understand the difference between
running your local SbS on your own computer and running via mysb.com
(SbS "in the cloud"). But before we get to that, let's focus on getting
sound out of the transporter.

When you get home, you should first make sure you have the VOLUME on
the transporter turned up high enough!

I just went on www.mysqueezbox.com.. pressed 'player' icon and it does
show the 'controller, Duet and transport. So they are all three
communicating effectively with the website. I placed the duet above
the transporter, used the same plugs the transporter is using (rca
cables) and it worked fine. I also tried the transporter with optical
(with and without direct ethernet connection) used with the duet
without issues. Non of these combinations seem to work with the
transporter yet the Duet works fine in any of the scenarios. I am at
this poitn willing to call or give my number out to see if anyone could
help when I get home. I tried so many combinations throughout the
weekend hoping to get time to work with it and costumize it better to
my system (particulary the htpc).

If you're going to "my music" you'd be offered up your local SbS music
library instead of mysqueezebox.com. If you go to the web,
mysqueezebox.com, do you see the transporter as connected or
disconnected. You can check this from work. Also, I'm assuming you've
checked the really, really, basic stuff, like the audio output from the
transporter into your amplifier is plugged in, working, etc. how is it
connected? RCA outputs to inputs on your preamp/receiver. Are you sure
THAT is working (i.e, used the same inputs/cable as you were using from
the Duet receiver). And you have the transporter digital volume turned
up high enough (not set to zero!).

and the diagnostics (ports) from the SbS control panel on your win7
machine? what does it report?

also, try this, on the transporter menu, hit back arrow until you get
the menu that allows you to connect to mysqueezebox.com instead of your
local server. once there, can you play music from mysb.com?

I have used the duet strictly as a source for Pandora (since the duet
is never going to play 'audiophile' quality of music). I bought the
transporter for my home system so it will improve the sound and make
downloading music to my htpc running windows 7 more logical.

The Duet has always worked flawlessly. I downloaded SBS to my htpc
(which had several songs my son downloaded previously... i believe
using Zune) and the transporter was able to locate all the music and
allowed me to scroll through the files effortlessly. The transporter
will not play (only display) any of the music being from the internet
(internet radio/pandora) or from the htpc (it also clearly displays all
the artist/music on my htpc). It will also not display any podcast only
shows '404 error'. So getting the information to the transporter doesnt
seem to be the problem. Getting the transporter to allow streaming
seems to be the glitch.

Should I go through Logitech or Amazon from whom I bought it? If I go
through Amazon I would have to wait for a refund in order to repurchase
the item (this time through Logietch). This is turning into the most
frustrating purchases ever. Hoping not to sound like a whiner at this

OK, slow down a bit and let's take this step by step. Now it sounds
like your transporter is not getting a good connection to your LAN.

1. You have the duet receiver working, correct? So you can play music,

either i'm confused by what you're saying or you're confused. ;-)
with the computer off, what are you streaming music FROM to the
transporter. The transporter doesn't stream, it receives the stream
from somewhere else (either SbS on your own computer or
mysqueezebox.com.

What are you running SbS on? computer type, OS, etc. If windows, click
on the control panel for SbS in the tray, and see what the diagnostics
tab says about your ports, etc.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

2011-09-06 Thread garym

not related to your problem, but I think you're not using sync the way
most would think of it here. Sync means you have two or more SB
players "synched" to play exactly the same thing (perfectly timed).
What you are reporting is the Controller shows what the transporter is
playing. That's correct behavior (and not what one would call
synching). The Controller can control any SB
player (the duet receiver, the transporter, SB3, boom, touch, radio,
etc.). So within the Controller menu, if you've chosen "transporter" as
the player (under choose player), whatever is playing on the transporter
will show up on the controller screen, and you can control the
transporter (choose songs, change volume, etc.)

Another test on your problem. Can you move the transporter temporarily
so that it is connected via ethernet cable to your router, then do a
factory reset on the transporter. Just trying to reduce the number of
variables (wifi, etc.).

And yes, the transporter is a very nice addition to a music system. It
is the central point of my system.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

I originally didnt have it synced with any other device. When I
realized that it was sharing information with the duet controller, I
took the battery out of the controller (to absolutely assure there was
no sharing of information with any other source). Afterwards, I synced
it to the controller to see what happens. The controller always
displayed what the transporter was playing (of course until I took
battery out). I made sure it was not synced to the Duet (and it wasnt)
and I retried.. nothing... I honestly couldnt be more frustrated. This
is a piece of equipment that would have tied alot of loose ends of my
audio system together into one place.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

2011-09-06 Thread artintampa

I did the xilinx reset shortly after developing all my problems. This
morning linked/synched the Transporter to the Duet Controller. The
Controller played music fine, the Transporter.. nothing... VU Meter
stuck, time does not advance etc etc. Defective Transporter?
Return/Refund?

I tried that.. nothing... This morning I linked the Duet Controller to
the Transporter. The Duet Controller worked fine/streamed music. The
Transporter, same.. VU meters stuck at one spot, time not advancing, no
sound. defective Transporter/return?

Try a xilinx reset. Remove power to transporter. Point remote at
transporter pressing the "1" key while restoring power. Display should
tell you it is doing reset.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

I just got off the phone with Brighthouse again. They claim that a port
needs to be opened. They have no idea what port to open unless they are
specifically told the port that needs to be opened. Anybody have any
idea which port I should tell them? Honestly stumped/frustrated
because the potential of the transporter is great but I am under a
'timeline' to return it.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter wont stream

2011-09-05 Thread artintampa

I received my transporter this last Friday hoping to set it up
throughtout the Labor Day Weekend. The entire set up went flawlessly
(this thing just about sets itself up, found squeezebox.com, internet
etc). When I try to play anything it will display the artists name,
time left on song, the VA Meter will change position but no music. If
play is pressed again, it will advance in the time counter, the vu
meter will change position but no music. Pressing the pause button
does nothing. This occurs with Pandora, Internet Radio, even when it
hooks up to my computer (I downloaded/set up the required slimdevice
program), when I try to stream podcasts it gives me 404 error (not
streaming). I hooked up my Squeezebox Duet above the transporter, with
the same wires etc and it runs flawlessly. I connected directly the the
ethernet cable, I contacted the cable company to make sure there
isn't any blocks of any kind, we have no firewall. My router is from
Brighthouse and we have Lightningn (the fastest they offer). When my
son logs into the router it shows 'error' each time the transporter
tries to connect. I do not want to return exchange it just to find out
I will have the same problem. I have done a factory reset, hit the
'brigtness button' in order to update firmware, unplugged it for the
day, replugged each with the exact same result. Very frustrated and
giving up here.
