An old post: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33201&highlight=isolation+feet At the moment my digi cable from my SB is not long enough to allow for any SB feet. Because after all, it is what sounds "Good" to the listener that matters. The point was that spikes are for coupling, not decoupling, no matter how ones listening pleasure ends up using them in the end. The spikes are for keeping the speaker from moving on carpet or any other flooring because of Newton's Law. I agree coupling is good if you have a concrete floor. In Europe, especially in the UK, a lot of floors are wooden boards especially on upper levels. These boards tend to vibrate a lot so I use spikes and coins under my speakers which decouples them very effectively. The cabinets do weigh 25-30kg though. What you say is fine in the right circumstances, but I believe it depends on the context. I had concrete floors previously and then I tried to couple the speakers with the floor. Not only was that the best thing for the concrete floor, the concrete floor was just better all round. Wooden floors are not ideal IMO (but I'm stuck with them). The real purpose of speaker spikes is to couple the body of the speaker to the floor. Speaker Spikes/Cones are not intended to isolate as those used under equipment (which Ill get to later). Spikes/Cones on stands/speakers are intended to pierce the carpet to couple the speaker to the floor. Newton's Law is the reason for spikes on speakers. The idea is to prevent the speaker from moving forward and backward on the carpet or flooring because of the forces created by drive movement. Which is the reason most people hear more clarity and a less muddy bass when using spikes/cones. The drivers cabinet is being securely held and coupled to the floor minimizing speaker movement, which in turn reduces unwanted out of phase byproducts caused by unwanted movement. Remember your speaker is an active driver system which is moving air and there are many mechanical forces at work. If speakers were not meant to be hard coupled to the floor, the manufactures would have designed a suspension system similar to turntables to hold the speakers so that they might move freely in space (which would be a disaster as far as sound reproduction is concerned). It takes vibration to even make sound and the idea behind speaker spikes/cones is to create a solid and stable foundation from which to project those vibrations without adding additional products from the cabinets movement. What good is the latest stiffest non-resonant driver mounting baffle if the cabinet itself is moving back and forth? If one wises to get the most out of ones spikes/cones, dont use any product between stand/cone/spike and speaker. The idea is to have the best mechanical connection possible. Of course there are small exceptions to this, but they mainly have to do with personal taste of what sounds good to a specific individual. On equipment, rubber or similar material has been proven with an accelerometer time and time again to reduce the most vibration and provide some of the best feet as well as most economical. An accelerometer shows a large increase in vibration when cones are placed under equipment. One theory is that most equipment doesnt have enough mass to make the spikes dig in and that the proper shelf material is not under most spike equipped components. Now this in no way discounts what can be under non-spiked feet. A 30 pound slab of granite with an amp with rubber feet is a very stable arrangement for an amp. -- iPhone *iPhone* 'Last.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/mephone) Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: SB3, GFR-700HD, Thiel 2.3, Second Boom Home Office: SB3, NAD C370, two VSM-1 Home Gym: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, Thiel PowerPoint 1.2 Mobile: SB3, Audioengine A5 iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59052 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

As there are no measures on this, there's plenty of abuse. As you say, some correct placement and some simple diy is usually as efficient. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What custom feet are you using for your Squeezebox?
I forgot: on the subject of vibration control the greatest improvement you can make, hands down IMO, is moving your equipment away from the speakers. Mine is behind my listening seat. Try putting your head where your equipment is and seeing how loud and resonant the sound is there - you may be surprised. This might not work as well, or even be counter-productive, for dipole speakers since the sideways radiation is attenuated. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What custom feet are you using for your Squeezebox?
I know I'm a skeptic in general but I'm not against this type of tweaking. What I'm against is the profiteering from companies selling these kind of supports at incredibly inflated prices. I believe you can tweak away and achieve the same physical effect (whether there's an audible effect is another matter as discussed) for very little money. Blu-tack has already been mentioned, but I've played with squash balls, inexpensive spikes, bubble wrap, inner tubes, slate tiles and a combination thereof for my equipment. Simple spikes on coins seem (caveat: not blind tested) to be pretty effective and cheap. For the SB3 it sits perched on an inner tube. My voodoo may be voodoo but it's cheap and harmless voodoo - a bit of fun. I would never buy an expensive support without looking into it with some blind testing. That would be very tricky for this type of thing so will probably never happen. :) Darren -- darrenyeats SB3 / Inguz -> Krell KAV-300i (pre bypass) -> PMC AB-1 Dell laptop -> JVC UX-C30 mini system darrenyeats's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10799 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59052 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Nothing really "incredible". Mechanical vibrations are tricky. Denon (like other companies) have been working for a long time on that on their high-end amplifiers (for instance the POA-A1HDCI amplifier http://www.usa.denon.comHD/POA-A1HDCILit_1219.pdf). Of course, you can believe that the guys at Denon are nuts, or you can do the blind tests yourself, if you like. ;) -- Themis SB3 - North Star dac 192 - Denon 3808 - Sonus Faber Grand Piano Domus Themis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14700 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59052 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
