Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Will Linn high resolution recordings play on an SB3?
So I thought I'd experiment with Linn Records 'Mozart Serenades' Studio Master 24bit/88.2Khz FLAC (track 6, 4:56). foobar2000 Properties showed it was 24bit/88.2Khz. The file played OK on both my TP and SB3; each of which reported (CustomBrowse plugin) that the file was 88.2Khz. There was no stuttering or problems with pitch. (NB both SB3 and TP flashed with the firmware in SqueezeCentre 7.0) So as the clocks don't support 88.2Khz, some on the fly manipulation must be happening. Where? I've used foobar2000 with the Secret Rabbit Code Resampler DSP to create a 24bit/48Khz file. The bitrate drops from about 2300kbps to 1425kbps in this file; as expected it also plays on the SB3 and TP. Hiya, Don't really understand bits and Khz I'm afraid, only that 24bit 196KHz should sound better than 16bit 44.1Khz. So simply put, the best quality the SB can play with out any alterations to the original file from the Linn site, is 24bit 44.1Khz (Flac naturally ;) )? -- Deaf Cat Deaf Cat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=515 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40484 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

When I used a SB3 with an external upsampling DAC I thought that the 24/48 sounded better than the 16/44.1, however with the SB+ using its internal DACs I really cannot hear the difference. Of course with 24/48 the 192K upsampler is really operating in 192 kHz 4x oversampling mode. Not sure if this makes a difference or not. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Will Linn high resolution recordings play on an SB3?
I downloaded a track (Something's Comming from Claire Martins Too Darn Hot album) from Linn at studio master quality and CD quality. I then converted the studio master version to a .wav file and loaded it into Cooledit Pro where I did a frequency analysis and found that the spectrum of the studio master file went upto around 40KHz. This being the case then the "just dropping every alternate sample" method of downsampling used by the SB3(*) would introduce aliasing (distortion). When I played the studio master 24/96 flac file on my SB+, it played but was noticably distorted - could have been the aliasing or something else. Using Cooledit pro I then downsampled the studio master wav file to 24/48 using its highest quality settings, saved it and flac encoded it. I then preceeded to compare the CD (16/44) quality flac with the downsampled (24/48) flac files using an SB+ -> Naim 102/Hicap pre amp -> Naim 140 power amp and Linn KanII speakers. Could I tell the difference? Well I'm not sure, there were probably some small differences but certainly nothing black and white, I'm sure I couldn't pick out one from the other in a blind test. In fact both versions sounded fantastic, the music seems to have been extremely well recorded and they certainly aren't mastered to be as loud as possible like lots of the current CD's are. (*) Is it a definate known that the SB3 just drops every alternate sample when presented with a 96KHz stream? Opinion's all with my ears and my system YMMV. -- Stoker --ian Stoker's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8264 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40484 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Mr_Sukebe;244729 Wrote: > Doesn't downsampling them reduce absolute audio quality and kind of > defeat the point of them? One reason for recording at 96 or 88.2KHz is to make the anti-alias filters on the ADCs easier. You can design filters with a slower roll-off without risking aliasing of the sampled information. Subsequently downsampling to 48 or 44.1KHz using a well designed digital filter, won't then loose any information or reduce audio quality. The question is how much relevant audio information is really there - above 20KHz? -- Patrick Dixon www.at-tunes.co.uk Patrick Dixon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=90 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40484 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Mr_Sukebe;244729 Wrote: > Doesn't downsampling them reduce absolute audio quality and kind of > defeat the point of them? Downsampling does not reduce the bit depth, i.e. 24-bits remain 24-bits so you will still benefit form the fact that the Linn files are 24-bit and not 16-bit. Why not try an experiment by downloading a single track from Linn at CD quality and Studio Master quality, and then downsample the master quality version to 24/48 (or 24/44.1 depending on whether the origonal master is 96 or 88.2) using foobar or some other tool.
